Lacking attention to detail. I ordered a coffee and bagel and the bagel portion of the order was wrong in every way except the type of spread I ordered - except that had problems too because I asked very specifically for a particular cream cheese and the order-taker proceeded to tell me about some other spread that wasn't what I asked for?? Here's a suggestion: cut the damn bagel in half, toast it, and actually give the type of bagel that was requested. I wasn't told if the variety I asked for was not available, they just subbed it and assumed that would be fine. The coffee was good; I got a cappuccino with the maple flavoring. As a coffee lover I had to stop by Pavement while on Newbury St. This quaint coffeehouse was situated right in the heart of Newbury, one of my favorite areas in Boston. The coffee was delicious! Rich flavors of mocha and dark chocolate rounded the espresso that made my cappuccino a foamy yummy beverage. I even bought the coffee to take home so I can have a piece of Pavement in my kitchen. In addition to the coffee the bagels were very fresh and the bagel sandwich options were endless. I tried both the Nova Lox and the California sandwich with avocado, beers, and alfalfa sprouts. Like many have said, the Vegan Tequila bagel sandwich is delicious. I love the creative use of tempeh and tofu cream cheese. This is a thoughtful vegan item, something I don't see often but appreciate tremendously. Dairy free milk options include almond and oat - there is no soy milk. I'm not a fan of oat milk and I think almond milk tastes odd heated up, but personal pickiness aside, there are plenty of options for diets of all kinds. read more

After asking if it was mine because mine was to stay, she over-poured what looked like a reasonably ratioed cortado into a glass that overflowed onto the counter and later stuck to my fingers...annoyingly. Given the milk and espresso were remixed together so quickly it didn't carry any crema/froth. It was mediocre at best. My friend ordered an espresso for damn near $4, which he said was too sour. He threw it in the trash. I feel like I need to at least say that the service level and quality of output (from the same product) is better at Pavement on Boylston. read more

Becca and Brendan: Cozy coffee shop tucked away on Newbury street. We came here on a Sunday morning with parents. Hailing from NJ, we are definitely bagel and pizza snobs and found this place after an extensive Yelp search. The shop was busy with people ordering food in and to go, and others getting work done in the bustling environment. There is not much seating, but we fortunately snagged some stools at the front of the shop. They have your standard variety of homemade bagels but what makes this place stand out is the options for toppings and interesting sandwich combinations all at a decent price. With several cream cheese options, spreads, and vegetables such as pickled beets and sprouts--you can make any kind of weird combination you desire. We got an everything bagel with spicy diablo cream cheese and red onion and tomato for $4.75 and the Californian (avocado, pickled beets, hummus, sprouts, cucumbers, onions, and honey mustard on a bagel) for $8. The bagels themselves were fine but definitely the best we have had in Boston (did I mention we are NJ bagel and pizza snobs). The spicy diablo cream cheese was unusual, delicious, and paired well with the veggies. To our surprise, the weird combination in the Californian was SO GOOD. No one flavor took over and each bite was unique and delicious. Overall awesome bagel place for it's respectable prices for Boston and unique options/combinations without being too gimicky. Though it is definitely a walk from Bay Village, we prefer Pavement to a "famous breakfast sandwich" place in our neighborhood and would rather make the walk to come here. Pavement Coffeehouse is always a fun time! I usually go to their Berklee location but figured because it was a Sunday, it was going to be packed there. Well, it was packed in this location as well, even more so because of its narrow, compact space. Berklee's location is definitely much larger. I had their Vegan Tequila bagel sandwich to go. They were running out of their bagel selections so I chose a plain one. The Vegan Tequila consisted of tempeh, diablo tofu spread, pico de gallo, and sprouts. The heat level of the spread was quite prominent but sooo good. I loved the abundance of sprouts the most. It added such a delicious, earthy touch to the bagel. Coffe is meh at best. If you have time to kill this place is the place to wait for your order. They will certainly take their time without any consideration for yours. My advice is don't bother tipping, it won't expedite your service in any way. Love pavement! I come here often for the delicious bagel sandwiches. I am a big matcha lover in general but I don't really recommend pavement's matcha lattes if you like a more pure taste, because it is pretty sweet. This is such an amazing franchise and it pains me to say that the Newbury St. Location is so lacking. The cashier was dry and curt, like a robot that had three programmed responses repeated over and over. It totally throws off the chill coffeehouse vibe. This location very obviously caters to tourists, so there isn't a strong sense of vibe. You go in, you get your coffee or sandwich, you get out. I would highly recommend going to other locations around Boston, especially Boylston Street and Gainsbourough Street locations. read more

This place is tiny and probably only has 20ish seats so if you want a place to study/linger, plan to get there early or be prepared to wait for a table. I used to be a regular at Pavement but now my visits are few and far in between. Pavement cut down their sandwich menu and got rid of arguably their best sandwich--The Chia. The actual bagels are quality, especially the whole wheat everything. The drip coffee is consistently good but the espresso drinks vary. You'll get a good latte on one visit and then one that's mediocre. The atmosphere inside is dungeon-like and acceptable for a short stay. They have a rotation of coffee shop artwork on the walls that would make Portlandia proud. read more

I am definitely a loyal pavement customer even though I don't think they're food/coffee is above average. Their breakfast sandwiches are good not great, and I recommend getting them on toast because their bagels are stiff and hard to bite into. That said, their bagels aren't bad and are good with cream cheese, just a lot for a breakfast sandwich in my opinion. The granola here is SO GOOD but paying extra for fruit isn't worth it because they just give you pears (I usually bring my own banana instead). Their lunch menu has a bit more variety and seems to be their specialty. I'm not a big coffee drinker, however I have had their tea and it's not my favorite, and I have heard from friends that their coffee is not the best either. read more

Originally planned to give this place 2 stars until I discovered their vegan tequila and killer tofu which is, you know, killer. The good: -Some seriously inventive and delicious sandwich choices, particularly the killer tofu which is insanely tasty. -A lot of options if you want to substitute something to account for allergies or diets. -Fast service, even when busy. Average wait time was 5 minutes when it was packed. The bad: -Almost always they're out of ingredients. Expect to have to substitute a LOT and hear "we're out of everything but...," which can hold up the queue. -The service has been hit or miss. Some of the servers are lovely, others clearly unhappy to be there and kind of rude. -Very limited seating, you'll be lucky to sit down and eat. Prepare to take your food to go in most cases. All that being said, it can be hit or miss with this place all round, but it's worth a try since it's one of the few places offering relatively inexpensive and quick food on Newbury street. read more

Since I was not satisfied with the coffee I went to another coffee house at The Hall and it was okay too. I am disappointed with Pavement for a few very important reasons. A few months ago I would have definitely told you that this is my favorite place to get coffee, literally ever. I frequent multiple locations multiple times a week. I am a latte coneisseur and would never, ever, drink a latte from sbux or DD. I am not easily impressed by appearances and run a forum on coffee at a popular magazine (posting under an alias for privacy reasons). Usually the Newbury location is very crowded and the staff can be quite rude, but I suck it up because the almondmilk latte is so creamy and non-acidic. I suppose that was just the great work of one barista (I am pretty sure is a male), and the rest of the employees make it EXTREMELY acidic. It tasted like burnt apple cider vinegar and I had to throw it out. I am also very sad that they changed their pastry supplier. Their old pastries were very 'niche' - a cute vegan banana muffin, the best choc chip cookie in Boston hands down, and amazing poppyseed muffin. Now the pastries are stale, dry, and look like something that has been sitting out to long at an embassy suites breakfast. Pavement needs a reality check and as attested to by other reviewers, the staff needs to lose the attitude. I encountered one or 2 new employees at Newbury that were actually kind but the OG rotation is snarky and mean, even when you accept your order with a warm smile and a genuine "thank you so much." Having good energy, a good culture, is everything to me and every as bit as important as the coffee. I am all about second chances but the acidity of the coffee and inconsistency is a repeated issue. I just find myself *hoping* that my favorite barista is working when I walk in. They are all so mean though that if I even complimented him I am sure I would be met with an eye-roll. It is hard to want to be forgiving and keep supporting Pavement when they give me absolutely no incentive to do so. read more

I'm a barista myself and this is the only other place I go to get lattes (besides the free ones I get from my work). The spanish lattes are just SO GOOD. Very consistent nice presentation, taste, and latte art. An awesome thing about this place is that their sandwiches are actually really good, too (not your typical, mediocre coffee-house food). So you can have a full meal here, if you wanted to, but the seating is sparse (especially during peak hours), so I wouldn't go here with more than one or two other people if you want to sit down. Free wifi for the first 2 hours, after that you have to pay. Pretty chill atmosphere, staff is nice, I come here to treat myself. read more

Like.. ok.. so sorry. Didn't know, but no need to make us feel like we did something so terrible when y'all still got 10 min left. We weren't gonna stay long anyway? Lol idk made me a little annoyed but the other barista was nice. Food: I got the Spanish latte and boyfriend got a regular latte. Spanish latte tasted super good!! It's just a latte with some condensed milk but oh man it was yummy. A cozy coffee shop on Newbury that plays awesome tunes and has outdoor seating as well. Looks like about ten or so people can fit out there! I had a cortado and a scone (blackberry/ginger) which were both lovely. It's great to hear baristas talking about albums and tunes! Also love the free WiFi. Looks like I'll have to come back for the bagels (tough sell for this former Brooklyner) and their breakfast sammys! Can't wait! read more
