5 stars just because this is not a Starbucks but an actual 3 stars for the coffee itself. It was just okay. It hit the spot but it could have been stronger and smoother. There was a bitter edge that didn't make for a great coffee experience. This coffeehouse is just down the street from my hair salon and as I had an early morning appointment recently, I wanted a cup of coffee to bring with me. At close to 9am it was moderately busy but things moved quickly. My server was very nice and efficient. I am an easy order...a large coffee, no sugar, a little bit of cream, and away I go. While the coffee itself was good, it wasn't great and given the price point, this should be a large step up from say Dunkin' Donuts. (This is no put-down of Dunkin' Dunkin' Donuts which often serves excellent coffee..a coffee snob I am not). You can get some food items here like bagels, breakfast sandwiches and the like. They have all kinds of hot and cold coffee and tea options. It is a small slightly subterranean space which would feel tight had there been more people in there that morning. But I peered in first and felt fine about the human to human spacing. They have tables outside and space to sit and linger inside when there isn't a pandemic going on. There are several other Pavement locations in and around Boston and Cambridge. What I really miss are the local one-off coffee shops of days gone by. Newbury Street used to have a Greek diner-coffee shop that had the best coffee (and food). I looked forward to getting a morning coffee there along with something for breakfast. Reasonable and delicious all around. That place is long gone but the memory lingers. Now, the prices to rent commercial space on Newbury Street are so ridiculously high that it is mostly chains of one sort or another that have the finances to buy their way in. That said, this is a small and still local chain; I am certain they can do better with their coffee. I make great coffee at home; it's not that hard. read more

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Pavement, but the Newbury location is not their best. They have a nice patio space, easy online ordering for pick up, the staff is always super friendly, and for a pandemic pick me up it's a solid spot. Just make sure to double check your order before you leave. I ordered the Turkey Sandwich and there was no turkey! Still delicious but disappointing. Any of their locations make for a great study/work spot (when there isn't a pandemic raging). Definitely worth checking out, especially the other Boston locations. read more

After many, MANY years of patronage of Pavement (decades actually, since before it was called Pavement), I am now boycotting them. I used to go to a Pavement location almost once a week with my significant other. I've always supported them and told all Boston visitors about them. A few weeks ago I sat in one of their stores to enjoy a bagel sandwich on a multigrain everything bagel. Suddenly I bit on a hard small object that was in the sandwich (or in the "everything" toppings) with a loud crunch! It was bad that it broke a piece of one of my back teeth!! When I told the assistant manager, she said they don't put hard objects in the sandwiches. I said I know that, but my sandwich certainly had one! She apologized and offered me a refund for my sandwich and said that's all she could do. I said I'll need to repair my broken tooth. She gave me an email address and said that I should email the company. I emailed the company and explained that I've been a regular costumer for decades and that I just had this incident. They replied a week later saying that it is very unlikely that a foreign object made it into their bagel or its topping and that I must have broken my own tooth by biting on it incorrectly! What an insulting answer! It's a wonder how all my teeth are not broken from all my mistaken biting!! Needless to say, I'm not setting foot in a Pavement again. I have literally spent thousands of dollars as a customer of this company, unfortunately, but no more. read more

I checked out Pavement Coffeehouse on my first morning in Boston. I went to the Newbury Street location because it was located near a few shops that I wanted to check out. Parking is all along the street, so if you don't like parallel parking, you may want to check out their other locations to see if they have other parking options. The location was busy, but if you're patient, you can find a place to sit. The employees were all nice too. I got a Spanish Latte and The Fix on a rosemary salt bagel. Everything was really great. The latte wasn't overly sweet and the sandwich was so good. The rosemary bagel had a great flavor. I'm giving this spot five stars! read more

One of the most delicious cups of matcha latte I've ever had! Tucked away discreetly, this adorable little coffee shop is full of lively people and delightful smells. Parking may be very difficult to find depending on the time of day and the shop itself is pretty small so there's not a lot of seating space. The staff is efficient but not super friendly. The drinks come out quick though. I loved the richness of my matcha latte. I had it made with almond milk and it was still very sweet. Lots of matcha taste but also plenty of frothy milk on top. I love Pavement, it's probably like my 20th time here. This is actually my first time writing a review for them! I always get either an onion or jalapeño bagel with either the diablo tofu spread or veggie tofu spread. Both taste exactly like regular cream cheese spreads (try them sometime!). My first visit to a Pavement! This location on Newbury is on the smaller side so seating may be hard to come by. I ordered their seasonal cinnamon fig latte and the lox sandwich on an everything bagel, and both were excellent. One of the best lox sandwiches I've had! It's because the bagel itself was awesome -- a little crisped on the outside but nice and chewy on the inside (but not too much!). We went on a Sunday morning around 11, and the shop was packed! There was barely any seating. However, the line moved pretty fast and there was relatively quick turnover for the tables. We got bagels and coffee, and though it was pretty expensive ($40 for both of us), it was definitely one of the best (if not THE best bagel) bagels I've ever had in my life. It was chewy but crispy, and perfectly warmed. The sandwich as a whole was OK, the egg reminded me of a fast-food egg, and I wish it had been fried or scrambled instead. The bacon was also just ok. The star of the show really was the rosemary salt bagel, especially with the soft fresh cream cheese. Id go back just for this bagel. The coffees were pretty good, we got the Vanilla Latte and Spanish Latte, both iced. A bit pricey (~$7 per coffee) but seemed fair quality for the price. Id recommend going earlier on the weekends to beat the rush. read more

Pavement has a good amount of locations in the greater Boston/Cambridge area. This location on Newbury St. has a hipster/quirky staff. Everything right now during the pandemic is "to go" only. They do have a couple tables outside. Non-pandemic they have some tables inside but this location is very small and gets super busy on the weekends. They have really good bagels IMO. I recently got a everything bagel toasted dark with cream cheese and lox. They were generous on the cream cheese and lox. The bagel was toasted perfectly. I had asked if they have lox spread/cream cheese with lox but the person taking the order had never heard of lox spread and said they don't carry that. I also got a Cortado. Their espresso has an interesting taste. It's not my "most favorite" espresso but I wouldn't turn it down either. They make a very good Cortado. All in all, I would definitely recommend Pavement. I probably should visit Pavement more often but I tend to forget it exists. read more

On a Sunday afternoon craving caffeine and waiting for my friend to arrive back from NY for a late lunch, I wanted to grab a coffee around the area since I didn't want to walk too far. When you get inside, you have to snake around to the back (the front is for online orders and walk-in orders). The cashier was friendly and able to answer questions quickly about their products. Though they didn't have the Cold Brew needed for the Death Cream, regular coffee did just fine as a substitute. The drink is really sweet (hence the name), but it's definitely worth a try for the last remnants of summer leading into early fall. Came in with coworkers and ordered a hot tea, and asked the woman at the register to have whoever made it wash their hands and make sure it was safe because I have a severe nut allergy. She acted like an immature high school bully, gave an expression like it was the craziest thing she had ever heard, and asked me to repeat myself. I did, and she did her rude expression again, and asked me to repeat myself AGAIN. I did, and she laughed in my face, and told me they don't have any nuts there. I said "you do" and she continued to challenge me until I listed off menu items containing nuts. Tried contacting customer service about this incident and no one got back to me for months, so a review it is. This shouldn't be tolerated and is just a reflection of the desperation they must have had to resort to hiring people like this. First time here and I love the simplicity of the menu. It was difficult because i'm so used to different flavors from coffee shops, but either this didn't have different flavors or it wasn't listed. I had trouble figuring out what i wanted but then I saw they had a special for apple cider + chaider which was chai tea with apple cider. Since the friend hails from North Carolina - he wasn't quite used to the line... but we were out of there in time to get to our session. Be warned, there's not a ton of seating available - probably a hair less than your average Starbucks. The ordering system for food was a little confusing but other than that the place seems like a well-oiled machine that fuels people up and sends them on their way. There are a few tables inside, but it's not the most relaxing atmosphere and a bit crowded so not sure if I'd spend a lot of time working there or taking a meeting or anything. It's a very pretty interior, with logs used as tables. Well lit, and clean. Service is pretty average if you're looking for that in a coffee shop. They take your order and give it to you but basically nothing more (in terms of smile, greeting, etc) Food: I got a chocolate croissant which was hard. There was a lot of chocolate but it was hard too so biting it wasn't a pleasant esperience. I went in the morning so I dread knowing the quality in the afternoon. The hot coco was very good.
