Decided to try this place out after a quick "brunch" search in the area. It's close-by to CSUEB in the plaza with Bronco Billies and Rita's. You might miss it but it's tucked all the way at the end. I love this place. If you're ever in the neighborhood (they are located above the college on the right as you're going up the hill), then stop in. In the evenings they bar-b-q outside and make a mean salmon! Daily they serve different coffees and breakfasts. It's a family business with mama Pearl and her kids. VERY good people and a great atmosphere. Pearl's is an interesting place. With sports memorabilia on the walls and a sports game on the TV, it's a perfect combination of a sports restaurant and coffee house. Recommended by my daughter who lives not too far from this small café. We went in for coffee first thing in the morning. They had a great selection of breakfast foods, from croissant breakfast sandwiches and bagels to on-the-go pastries, muffins and donuts. Great service and the coffee and croissant breakfast sandwich were very good. It was made-to-order, which I loved. They offer dinner on Thursdays and Fridays from 6-9pm. We went on a Thursday evening and again, our food was made to order. I ordered a grilled gourmet cheeseburger and a side of bbq pork-on-a-stick.. my dinner was about $13. They were accommodating to even grill my onions when I requested it! It's a bit hidden as Pearl's sits on the side of the small plaza. They do have a street sign promoting their coffee so you can't miss it. Pearl's is one word......AMAZING!!!!!!! From the jalapeño bagel to the salmon, chicken, and lumpia......WOW!! Never disappointed!!!

Very happy that Pearl's is in my neighborhood. It's a great spot to get coffee/breakfast items, the lunch sandwiches are solid, and their dinners are my favorite. They were not open consistently for dinner under their old name (Cafe Caribe), but now the hours seem to have stabilized. If you haven't checked it out in a while, come back. They're always open on Thursday and Friday nights for dinner. I've also seen them open on Saturday/Sunday nights for sports games, but I don't think they're open every weekend. Lots of folks from the neighborhood come by to watch and eat together. On the dinner menu is chicken, tri-tip and salmon. Each meat comes with your choice of rice/potatoes, salad and a King's Hawaiian roll. They also have salads instead of the meal combo. I usually get the Naylan's salad with cranberries, pecans and goat cheese. I've tried all the meats, my favorite is the chicken, but they're all yummy. They use tasty, flavorful marinades on the meat. They give pretty big portions and it's a good value. It's perfect for when we don't want to cook (which is like, always)! This review is solely based on service. Like many of you, I chose this place to order from based off of the great reviews and the amazing pics of the food. Yesterday, I called and placed a large order for a company breakfast this morning. The woman I spoke with was very friendly and confirmed my order. Before I got off of the phone, I offered to put down a deposit or pay for the order being that it was large. She said that it was ok, so I did not pay over the phone. I told her that I would be in the next morning around 7:30am. After our initial call the woman called me twice and left 1 message to confirm my order. I called her back around 6:00pm and told her that it was correct and told her that I can pay for the order right then and there. She told me no again and that she would see me at 7:30. This morning I arrive to this place around 7:40am to pick up my order and they did not make the food. I was told that it was because I did not confirm with her or make a deposit. I reminded her of our conversation over the phone at 6:00pm and how I offered to pay TWICE. She said she was expecting me last night to come in and pay a deposit for the order today. Never once did I tell her that I would go in that night to make a deposit. NOR did she tell me that I needed to go in that night to make a deposit. Clearly, there was a miscommunication. After going back in forth with her, she tells me that she called me at 5:00am this morning to confirm my order and that she can have my order ready in an hour. I then called my coworkers to tell them the food wasn't ready and told her no thank you. What made this experience frustrating for me was that she never told me that I had to come in to make a deposit beforehand and her "as a matter of fact" attitude. She had no apology for the miscommunication or anything! The two conversations I had with her ended with confirming my order and me picking it up today. After I left, I checked my voicemail from this morning at 5:00am and she said that I never came in last night but she was going to start making my order in an hour. So either way, one would assume that my order was going to be made. This was a MAJOR inconvenience. I drove from Alameda to pick this order up and because of the poor communication, I had to scramble last minute to find breakfast for the staff AND I had to push our meeting back an hour. Please communicate more clearly with your customers in the future. read more

They always have organic fruit for sale and a huge selection of other refreshing beverages. The hot tea selection is not vast but sufficient in variety. I lovveeee this cafe! I work right down the street and it's a quick and convenient place for me to grab breakfast in the morning. Pearl (the owner) and her husband are very friendly people. Pearl, who I see most of the mornings, is very good about always remembering my favorite, a croissant sandwich with turkey, egg and cheese ($5). And she always asks me how I'm doing and stirring up a little convo with me while I wait on my food. Sometimes I'm in a rush and I might get a donut which is just a $1 or a muffin ($2). This place is Bomb-diggity. The breakfast bagel is 4 bucks and the croissant sandwich is 5 dollars. Both have egg cheese, and a choice of ham, bacon, or sausage. It definitely hit the spot. There's also a limited time deal where pearl drinks are 2.25. WHAT A DEAL! I think they're currying up boba drinkers before the quickly opens up next door. Let me tell you, as a self proclaimed milk tea expert, their milk tea is AWESOME. I definitely got some love out of the drink today. The perfect amount of sweetness if only achieved by a master of pearl drinks. There were no pearls today but I still wanted to check out the drink and he took off .25 cents. A milk tea for 2 bucks? It's like i'm in the motherland! I CANNOT wait for tri-tip dinners which i hear is not to be missed. It's in the evenings of Wed, Thurs, and Friday. I should have taken advantage of more of the drinks here because they have a LOT to offer from smoothies, peppermint mochas, to vietnamese coffee. Best part? Tax is included in the price. I really wanted this place to be good. I had a turkey sandwich today which was no different than what I could make at home. Square, american bread, a little bit of lettuce, tomatoes, and turkey bought at the local supermarket. For 5 bucks? No thanks. For the same price I can go to subway next door and get something way more filling. Caribe, if you guys are going to sell food, make sure it's yummy and delicious, and worth the price, otherwise don't sell it because it makes you look bad. I never noticed this place before until I had to park on the other side of the lot because the compact spots near Subway were all filled. At first they didn't look open, because the place was so empty. I tried the door though and sure enough open and I am immediately welcomed by the staff. It took me a while to check out the menu on the wall and see what I wanted but I ended up with the Lox Bagel, Vanilla Latte, and a biscotti. Once I got my food, I headed back to school. Then once I found a parking spot dug in. The Latte was a bit on the sweet side and I probably should have skipped the vanilla flavor. The lox bagel though....OMG so good. Toasted sesame bagel with lox, cream cheese, capers, and sweet purple onions. The balance of everything was perfect. I will come around again for sure. read more

The staff here was so friendly, I really hope they do well. When I visited here awhile ago on a break fom school they were fairly new and still were adding their lasting decorative touches. They are located in the same shopping center as books on the run, bronco billy's pizza and books on the run. Kind of hard to see since the store front doesn't face the street but they are right by the Bon Faire. I liked the vibe of the place and there are cute little tables to sit, eat and relax. I also saw a lady on her laptop so I'm going to guess that there is wifi (don't know if it's free). They have a large variety of coffee and smoothie drinks and different sandwiches and pastries as well. I ordered a sandwich combo that was decently priced and the ingredients were fresh. I haven't been to the haystack in awhile but next time I'm in the area I need to go back and try something new. Overall, a cute place with a ton of potential. Go visit them! read more
