    Pad Thai
    Linda R.

We were in the area for a bridal dress fitting so stopped in for lunch. Pad Thai was large as was the fried rice. Both were a bit dry. The curry chicken had a good level of spice and lots of veggies. I realize spice levels are subjective but beware if heavy spice is not your thing. I asked for minimal spice and my curry was pretty spicy- according to all at our table. On an unrelated note, the rest rooms were spotless! Really nice and clean. Service was good.

Singapore Rice Noodles - very bland.

We were craving some Asian food and decided try this place for lunch. It's Malaysian food and we have had some amazing Malaysian food in the past. The restaurant ambience is ok - very casual. Nothing fancy about it. The servers were very sweet and polite. However, the food is not good at all. We were a group of 8 of us, and no one enjoyed the food. Here are the veggie options we ordered: - Roti Canai (vegetarian) - this was good. Wish the gravy was a bit thicker, so it would be easier to eat with the roti. But the curry had a lot of flavor. - Veggie Spring Rolls - this was ok. Definitely not the best I've had. - Basil Thai Fried Rice - I had high hopes for this one,as it's one of my favorites at Thai restaurants. This was so bland, that it lacked the basic flavors. We also asked them to make it vegetarian and without eggs, but the rice smelled of eggs. We had to return it as the rice was just not tasty at all. - Singapore Noodles - again, so bland! I had to mix it with the Roti Canai curry to add some flavor. We pretty much left this dish halfway. - Mango and Fried Rice as dessert - so bad. The mango was sour and the rice was not cooked well at all. Overall, not a place I would recommend. Majority of the people in the group were non-vegetarians and did not enjoy their dishes either. There are many other restaurants in the area. The Peppino's Dosa is amazing.

I've eaten in the waltham location a couple of times, and same for their chinatown location. I went for the roti canai and Chow Kueh Teow noodles dish. Roti canai - Think of this as Chicken curry, with puffy nan-like bread for dipping all that saucy goodness. There is ONE piece of chicken in each order, consistently. There are a few pieces of small potatos as well. The idea is you rip some of the bread off and dunk it in the sauce and eat it. It's pretty good. It is small, as it is an appetizer. Chow Kueh Teow - These are slightly spicy noodles with shrimp. Portion size is good as the whole container was filled. This is one of my safest bets when I want a noodle dish here. Good flavors and always leaves me satisfied. I've done pick up at the restaurant and can say they offer dine in service. There is some street parking outside. The Waltham location is unfortunately slightly outside of the heart of moody st, where all of the other restaurants are. I hope this place does well as I do enjoy the different mix of food that they bring to the neighborhood.

Pork rib herb soup (bak kut teh) has multiple full fat pieces floating. Disgusting.

Beef satay is the worst I've ever tried. (I usually love satay). It's so overcooked and unable to chew. I asked the server and she simply said it's just the beef. Chicken will be better. What kind of service this is???? Pork rib herb soup (bak kut teh) has multiple full fat pieces floating. Disgusting and very salty. Disappointed and do not go.

BRO I LOVE MOODY ST. PENANG WITH MY WHOLE HEART. I grew up eating Malaysian food with my mom and when my brother and I went to the Chinatown location, they were hella rude to us, so I was skeptical about this one too. However, the service has never not been super attentive and really nice. The manager/owner(?) also always checks in with us every time ive been. The roti is crispy and light. The Hainese chicken is super juicy and flavorful. The chicken satay has a generous portion and the peanut sauce has the perfect ratio. The ABC is a little different from NYC but the ice is so nicely shaved with lots of toppings underneath.

Went for a weekday lunch and was super disappointed. I feel like this is a bad Chinese restaurant trying to offer Malaysian food. - Beef Satay: looked like it was made from top round. The lack of fat made it dry and tasteless. - Roti Cani: Curry was super watery, tasteless and the Roti wasn't even crispy. - Beef Rendang: This one annoyed me the most, not only was sauce watery, the beef was dry and bland, - Hokkien Mien: Again watery sauce and they used thin Lo Mein noodles instead of thick noodles. - Penang bean curd: This was the only dish that was decent and was told the tofu was made in house. Would've been nice to see more tofu though. I will say the service was good, they were attentive and water was always filled. Though It is weird that they give red solo disposable cups for water.

Kang Kong belacan & Indian mee goreng Both not recommended as it's not spicy (probably cater to local tastes)

having an expectation as a Singaporean as I'm craving for comfort food. Came across this and immediately thought nuts. Ordered Kang Kong belacan & Indian mee goreng. Both not recommended as it's not spicy (probably cater to local tastes) also ordered a bowl of chicken rice to go along with the kang Kong and it taste nothing like it would be. Rice had too much water and no fragrant. Super disappointing.

The homemade roti, hainese chicken, watercress and dry pearl noodles dishes are my staple items at Penang (here and the Boston one) and are the ones I'm always craving. The curry that comes with the roti is a little too watery for me. I like it slightly thicker so you can pick up more sauce with the pancake. The water cress is always on point. The hainese chicken was a little overcooked today, but the flavors made up for that. We came on a Monday night and there was plenty of street parking in front. The restaurant was not packed so we didn't feel rushed eating.

We walked into a warmly decorated dining room where the staff remained accommodating even during a busy Friday night when the pace naturally slowed a bit. The Hainanese chicken is the dish to build the meal around, earning the most consistent praise for good reason. The chicken came out tender and well seasoned, with a depth of flavor from the poaching process done properly. The rice that accompanied it absorbed enough of the cooking liquid to stand on its own rather than just serving as a base. The curry chicken in particular has a sauce worth working through to the last spoonful, and pairing it with white rice or the coconut rice made the whole bowl feel complete. The roti canai is the starter most people reach for first, and it is worth having alongside the mains, flaky and well made with the curry dipping sauce doing its job. The beef rendang and chow kueh teow rounded out a menu that rewards ordering widely across a table. A few dishes landed on the milder side compared to what a more assertive Malaysian kitchen might deliver, so if you want bolder heat it is worth asking when ordering. The lunch combination sets offer strong value if your schedule allows for a midday visit. For a Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown that delivers on the Hainanese chicken and roti canai, Penang is a solid and much needed option in the neighborhood.

Fish cakes were small and perfectly uniform - almost like they were frozen rather than prepared on site. Green curry had some spice but was mostly one note, there just wasn't much depth of flavor. Vegetables were all cut in huge hunks - both dishes had giant pieces of red bell peppers and onions. Fried rice was pretty bland and barely had any Chinese broccoli in it. Ambiance was bare bones - you order at the counter and they bring you your food and plastic side plates. Half the tables were stacked with boxes and bags of takeout orders. To top it off there's no bathroom, we were told to use the bathroom at another local business. If I'm gonna spend $60 somewhere, I expect to be able to wash my hands before eating and use the restroom. Perhaps there are some specialty dishes that we didn't try but this was my 2nd time ordering from here (I got take out once before) and both times the food was pretty bland. A truly underwhelming experience - especially when there are so many better restaurants in the area.

Although the serving staff might be so busy as I only see her alone. Came for the dine out dinner menu so I got an app, entree and dessert. The keing D' ananas (cubed porked in a shrimp and fish broth like curry with pineapple) and beef bourguigon was amazing and hands down one of the best in Boston I have tried so far. The entree for mussels and fried pork spring rolls are great but nothing out of the ordinary. Finally, the desserts we got the chocolate truffle cake and that was rich but very delicious. But I personally like a lighter taste so the poached pear with raspberry sorbet was a nice touch to the end! The reviews looked good and I was excited to try their unique menu... well, let's just say we were very disappointed. First of all the prices are very expensive. I know this is Boston, but $17 for a cocktail is ridiculous! Our server was lovely, he was very kind and had a kind spirit. I was excited to try the "Rouleaux" since they remind me of the eggrolls, my mother learned from her Vietnamese mother-in-law. It was very crispy, which unfortunately is the only good thing I can say about it. The flavor was so off. It's almost as if the ingredients in the Rouleaux were loudly competing for my attention simultaneously! It didn't really melt in your mouth either, it just felt heavy. The other appetizer we ordered was called Dumplings croustillants au poet epics. This was actually worse than first appetizer. I like lemongrass, but MAN the lemongrass was so overpowering. I started to wonder... "is this how it's always made"?! I'm not even exaggerating. Overall, the atmosphere was nice - definitely pricey, and the food isn't worth the hype. Till next eats, SJ

Staff was very knowledgeable about each entree, and provided information about how entrees were cooked and served. They also had a "halvsies" menu of half-size portions (ideal portions for one or two diners). Started with the Mama Chang Pork Dumplings, which were excellent, and the cauliflower appetizer (a little spicy, but very good). Liked the udon noodles with chicken and bok choy, although a little less red chili pepper would have suited my tastes better (good for those who like a bit of zing to their food). The lettuce wrap chicken was well worth the 20-minute wait. Finished with the lemon ginger mousse, which was very light. The fortune cookie on the mousse was fresh and crisp, so good that some thought it might have been baked at Joanne Chang's Flour Cafe and Bakery. The finish was extra nice, with a red lucky envelope with chocolates accompanying the check, an orange at each table (signs for good fortune in the New Year), and red decorations hanging in the restaurant to create a festive setting. Good choice for the start of the New Lunar Year of the Fire Horse!
