The fact that the owner also shares his beliefs of equality and freedom FOR ALL is icing on the cake! I'm so tired of businesses greed and staying out of politics. I love Penzey's Spices and I'm lucky enough to have a store near where I get my hair done.

I owe Penzeys a huge thank you. Their spices are the best I've used, and without them my work wouldn't be nearly as competitive. Do you need to compete in a BBQ, chili cookoff or a bake-off? Forget buying your spices at the store and spend a little extra time to make the trip here. Here's why: 1) Smell before you buy. The stuff they sell is so much more fresh and aromatic than the stuff you pick up at the local Kroger. Nearly every spice has a sampler jar. Pick it up, shake it (with the lid on), and then smell. Awesome! When you're brainstorming a mix, this is an invaluable tool. Just try doing that at a grocery store. 2) Helpful Tips. Penzeys has lots of information on each of its spices. They explain the origins, preparations, differences and even have helpful tips on application. For example, the chopped jalapenos contain a note that they should be added to a dish near the end of cooking because the spicy heat is sensitive to high temperatures and grows milder with extended cooking. Of the four paprikas they sell, they explain which one is hotter, the merits of each and how they recommend mixing them. What's the difference between Mexican vanilla, Madagascar and Double-strength vanilla? Find out here. Penzeys cares about their spices and they know what they're selling you. 3) Spice Blends. They have tons of them! And all the ones I've tried are top notch. My favorites are the chili powders. The Chili 9000 & Chili Con Carne are amazing. In my opinion the Chili 9000 is one of the most imaginative blends I've ever smelled. I think it's more appealing than any Ras al Hanout or top grade Curry that I've smelled. 4) Price. You'd think that premium spices and service like this comes at a premium price, but I think you'll be surprised to find the prices here are reasonable. However these are spices, and they are not cheap. You will however find extraordinary value for what you purchase. Why spend the same amount at a grocery store and walk away with inferior stuff when you can save your money, go to Penzeys and have fun rediscovering all your favorite recipes. When people taste my dishes and their faces light up the next words out of their mouths are almost invariably "Wow, this is so good, what's in this?" I just say "it's too much explain, but if you go to Penzeys you'll understand." As far as I'm concerned, they are the secret ingredient. read more

Top spot for spices in Dallas. Four different cinnamons, vanillas, and great spice blends. Shallot pepper blend works well with just about everything. A half-dozen whole peppercorn options. You can pickup spices in glass jars, then later buy plastic 4oz or 8oz zip locks to refill your jars. Some time-saving dried vegetable options (chopped shallots, celery, etc). One wish? Dried mushrooms (porcini, etc) would complete my shopping list. read more

I am a huge fan of Penzeys Spices. I had mail ordered from them for years and was very excited to live in a city where I can visit in person. Visiting a Penzys is a great experience for the cook who likes to kick it up a notch. I usually make a trip here about every three months to pick up the supplies I need for my kitchen. Buying in the bulk packages will save you some good money and you can refill your jars or containers at home. I am much more of a fan of purchasing the spices and making my own spice blends. If you do not like going to that level of effort, Penzys has a large selection of pre-made spice blends for you to try. In addition they have a selection of sea salts and peppers. One product that I love to use that you might miss is the soup bases. They have chicken, beef, seafood and vegetable soup base. Penzey's is the best thing that ever happened to my spice cabinet! They have top-notch spices and helpful employees. Don't miss out on their seasoning mixes: Pasta Sprinkle, Cajun Seasoning, Garden Salad Seasoning, Smoky 4/S, and Ozark Seasoning are all staples for my family. Most grocery store spice mixes contain the harmful excitotoxin MSG (it's not just in Chinese food, people). Penzey's does not sell anything with MSG. Yes, really, I thought I was dreaming too. So, I have to admit that I love finding a bargain and when I saw that World Market sold herbs and spices at a pretty decent price, I was sure that I'd found the last spice resource I needed. I was wrong. Penzeys is not cheap. It's not ridonkulously expensive, but this is not your bargain bin spices. I spent a good 30 minutes just wandering through the store, opening up the little sample jars they had so I could smell everything. It was intoxication. I think I got an herbs and spices high. Or maybe I reached herbs and spices nirvana... I dunno, it was something awesome. I ended up buying a lot more than I thought I would, and everything that I've used has been great! I even got some fun seasoning salts to give my mom for her birthday, and she's asking me where this store is now! This is a terrific place for foodies! Every kind of spice known to man! They had 5 or six kinds of ginger alone. We received a box of these Penzey spices as a wedding gift and have been hooked ever since. If you sign up for their cataloge, it will usually come to you with a great coupon attached to it. I had a coupon for buy one get one free. At the time, I needed Saffron and Cinnamon. I am not a baker, but came here with my wife about a week ago. I was quite impressed with the spices and seasonings they offer here and the expertise and friendliness of the staff. Talk about uncovering a hidden jewel! My friend told me (actually raved) about Penzey's a few weeks ago and driving home from Addison yesterday I saw it and had to take a detour! First off, upon walking in, I felt as though I was in a spice market in India. It's amazing how smell can transport you to a different time/country. The curry spice took me back to my mom's kitchen.. the Southwestern spice took me to my friend's bbq in the middle of the summer.. I loved the wide variety of different spice mixes and the gift ideas. I started going through my rolodex of foodies that would love this place! I didn't get a chance to talk to the ladies in the store but both seemed well-informed and super friendly. I also loved the home-y feeling of the store with cute children's pictures all over the walls. Penzeys! I am a fan for sure. This quaint little spot won me over quick. My best friend's mom told me about this spot to get some good ole Vietnamese cinnamon for our homemade cinnamon rolls so I had to go. I went in and felt welcomed. I was greeted by two people and asked if I needed any help. I was taken straight to the cinnamon and browsed around. The place was neat, clean and organized. The prices are great too for these amazing quality spices. I was won over instantly. I went to check out and was greeted by a sweet lady. After we were done she asked if I could help her replace the water jug in the break room. Of course I did it and it was simple. She gave me some new spices to thank me. Only my 2nd time here and I will continue to go back to build my spice wheel. Great place for really good seasonings and spices. Go here for the perfect gift for a cook. Only down spot was that they don't have a large collection of salts and didn't carry peppermint extract. But, just knowing that your getting a better product than Spice Island and McCormick def makes up for it. At each display they have canisters so you can smell and um prob taste if you daring enough. Mr. (Mrs.?) Penzey is the god of spices. I first discovered Penzey's out in Torrance, CA, and just assumed we would not have anything so awesome in Dallas. When I told the salesperson that I wished we had something like this in Dallas, she told me that there in fact was a store in my town! I had told my mom about Penzey's and wanted her to experience it too, so we visited the Dallas store together a couple of months ago. It was even bigger and better than the store in Torrance. My mom was also very impressed, and is now, like me, addicted to whatever form of crack it is that they put in Penzey's spices. She lives two hours away and has already been back to visit the shop again. I plan to do my Christmas shopping here. Seriously, the spices here can't be beat! Pleasant, courteous and delightfully blessed with a sense of humor, the staff here attentively walked me to the section of the store with the spice I asked for. They have sample jars for every spice selection. Great variety, aromatic presentations, assorted sizes for whatever your cooking needs. Roomy enough to not feel cramped but well-stocked shelves with seemingly endless possibilities for improving whatever comes out of your oven or off your stove/grill. This place is great! The employees are friendly and knowledgeable. You can smell the spices before you decide to buy them. They have a lot of unique/hard to find herbs/spices. And their proprietary blends are GREAT! I have the Ruth Ann's Chicken and Fish seasoning, it's amazing and goes well on chicken, fish - but veggies as well. If you sign up to receive their catalog they'll occasionally send coupons for a jar of free spice. It definitely keeps me coming back to the store! You will pay a little more for their spices than the cheap dollar spices at wal mart...but it's soooooo worth it! Makes all the difference in your cooking. read more

Hubby, the chef in the family, was on a quest for peppercorns...and he is a purist, so not just any peppercorns would do (I am the beneficiary of all his good cooking because of this obsession with ingredients, so don't complain). He was looking for places online when I remembered Penzeys and a quick search found the store was very close to where we live. The store itself is huge and smells oh so wonderful. There are so many spices it is almost overwhelming and I can't imagine there is much you would be looking for that you would not find here. The staff was also very helpful. Hubby found the peppercorns he was looking for and some others he wasn't (he has now made his own personal blend) and was very happy...then we go to check out and BOOM-we spend enough to get two free spice blends...then he signs up for emails and gets another free gift. So,while it was pricey, we left with a lot of goodies. "Love people, cook them tasty food" could pretty much be Hubby's personal motto, so I imagine we will return. read more

Ask for Leslie or Sassy. The spices smell (and taste) so good, far better than grocery store mass-produced herbs & spices. Incredible. I have not purchased dried herbs, spices, salt nor pepper at any other place since I found Penzey's 5 years ago. They have the freshest products you will ever find, anywhere in the city. It's just the 2 of us, so for most products I go for the smaller bottles. They have great gifts I love giving at Christmas and birthdays. Their salt selection is better than Whole Foods and Central Market and they have the best salt and pepper grinders you can find. All of this at a really convenient location. Well, it will be if they ever get 635 finished. Some of my favorites are the toasted onion powder, Ozark seasoning and their Mexican vanilla, but really everything I have ever got from here has been wonderful. The friends and family I have given their products too also love them and rave over how fresh they are. If you sign up for their mailing list, the monthly catalog they send has a coupon for a free bottle they are featuring that month. I thought for years, when shopping @ Rethreads, that this place was just a warehouse, due to the crates in the Windows. I finally decided to go in and see what this place was all about. I am now hooked! I am from Cajun country, on Ms. Gulf Coast. I love spice in everything I eat. They have a great gift box deal, with lots of options. I now probably have over 50 different spices from here! I have yet to be disappointed! My favorite saleslady has short, spiky red hair. She is very well versed on their products, but just so sweet to get to know. I've always been told I have a deep radio voice, and today she heard me talking and left her lunch just to come out to wait on me. I'm a gourmet cook and I can't freakin' believe I haven't been to Penzey's before now. Wanted to whip up a batch of Tandoori Chicken without the Tandoori oven so I'm looking for Garam Masala all over town. Yelp a spice shop and "poof", up pops Penzey's Spices. Lots of blends, herbs... a cook's dream. A whole area dedicated to Baker's Spices with cocoa's, apple pie spices, lemon peel, etc. Another area (big) for salts, peppers, and grinders. Numerous chili blends - check. Also have some nice gift baskets of various spices which I would like to announce here that I would be damn happy to receive any one of them - just sayin'.
