I would advise not to bring your vehicle to this place for any service work or anything else for that matter. I take care of my own vehicles as far as repairs and routine maintenance so I like to believe that my truck is mechanically sound. I brought my truck in for a simple nys inspection and I strongly believe that my truck was tampered with in order for them to suggest a service job. After about 45min of waiting for the inspection, one of the kids came back stating that I had a leaky brake line.... which according to my spotless driveway was a concerning lie. But after refusal of work i get back home and all of a sudden I'm leaking brake fluid from the front driver side. I assess the situation and find a line that looked to be tampered with. I fixed the line and ended up getting my nys inspection done elsewhere. Now I understand things happen, and parts wear, but in this particular situation, something didn't seem right. Outside looks the same as normal inside is the same to the left but construction to the right. I get the weakest nonchalant no eye contact greeting from the man at the counter and tell him I need brakes and a brake inspection. After giving me prices he sarcastically tells me I should have seen the 2 signs when you walk in that say service only. I'm sitting outside the doors in my car writing this and NO SIGNS SAY THAT. Terrible Experience at Pep Boys on Elmwood. Day 4 of repairs Assistant Manager Zach placed me on hold while checking on the status of my car. I sat on hold for 40 minutes only to get disconnected and have to call back TWICE to get an answer from another staff member who had mentioned they were still waiting on a part to arrive. No communication from staff as I had to reach out multiple times a day to only hear "not sure what's wrong with it yet". Had major repairs done over the course of 4 days only to pick it up, drive a mile down the road and have the car enter low power mode because of an issue with the sensor they had installed already. After an entire day of diagnosis and waiting on another sensor to be ordered I got my car back. Bought 4 new tires that were not even filled and had no Air valves caps. Guy at the front handed me 4 new caps and I installed them myself. These guys will tell you what you want to hear to get you out the door and really doesn't seem like they care when your car is completed. read more

I was cleaning off my van & broke my driver side windshield wiper. So, I hit up Pep Boys. There was no one there, so I was taken care of immediately. The employee was so nice & quick with looking up what size wiper I needed. He told me about the prices of them & the quality of each. I went with the Rain-ex. He even went to get it for me instead of making me search like the last time I needed one. It took me a bit to find it. Then I asked him if someone could pop it on for me & he said he'd do it. It was $25.99 for a 26" Rain-ex wiper. I checked out very quickly & he had my old wiper off & the new one on in about 45 seconds. Very nice , young employee. Manners & does his job. Pep boys Elmwood buffalo: I had a flat tire but no spare so I had my car towed to pep boys a 6pm. My car wasn't touched until after I called them a few times the next day. I went in because I felt nervous because of the telephone customer service. I saw my car lifted high on the lift as I was pulling in to the parking lot. Why would you change a tire from up high to change a flat? When I finally drove off the lot I heard a rubbing scraping sound so I turned around and went back. They lifted my car up again and showed me a flap that had a missing screw. I assumed they were stealing something from my car because I did not have an issue with this flap before I came in. Further, considering the woman ahead of me confronted them about removing her good tires and replacing them with old ones. Fortunately, she was familiar with her tires. They appeared nervous and shifty when the lady confronted them. Im feeling a bit anxious now because I feel as though they've done something unlawful to my car. read more

AVOID! Do not go here. Made an appointment at 12:30 to get a tire patched up. Got my car back 3 hrs later. Checked the PSI on all tires and it was over by 10. Basically just over filled my tires and didn't fix the leaking tiring. A few days later tire was low again. Not much help for a resolution to this either from their location. read more

It really does take a lot for me to give a 1-star review but Pep Boys found a way. I have been here a handful of times now since I live so close and so far the unpleasant outweigh the pleasant whether it's the amount of time it takes or the price you get charged or the lack of communication. Most recent experience resulted in me coming here for an oil change only to be told that all of the necessary mechanics called off for the day so I would have to reschedule. I would really suggest avoiding at all costs unless it's an emergency. There are so many other places around the area that can provide more adequate service. First time at Pep Boys and I had a good experience! Wasn't sure if I wanted my tire patched or replaced, so the front desk worker talked me through the options and pricing. Ended up being a good deal (buy 3 get 1) so I got all four replaced. It did take about 3hrs, but I didn't have an appointment so I was fit in. This place is the WORST. I scheduled an appointment for 1pm on the previous day. I show up at 12:30 the day of, hand over my keys and proceed to wait 2 HOURS!!! went for a tire alignment and oil change, dropped off the car first thing in the morning and didn't hear anything until i called around 2PM and was told i needed to spend over $1400 for 4 new tires and new rear shocks. knew that was crazy so i said just do the oil change. i go to pick it up and it's over $100 just for the oil change, charged me $10 just to reset the display on my dash. another woman in line in front of me was upset because they had screwed her over and lied over the phone. definitely do not go here unless you want to be taken advantage of read more

went there for overheating issues, Joe was very nice and helpful. the tech ran a scan and said I needed a thermostat, ya can't tell that from a scan, I had it replaced , over $500 and I had to go back 3 times cause it was leaking, they found the lose hose clamp on the third time. because of coolant spraying everywhere my coolant fan was damaged, I had to show them it wasn't working. I called around and prices ran between $99.00 to $135, they went thru their vendor and I paid over $500 for the same part. and still leaking ,had to pay someone else to fix the leak. I called the area manager tyler, he called me he was with his kid told me to text him and he would take care of this problem, sent text and a half dozen phone calls with no reply, paid $529.00 for a thermostat I didn't need, and was over charged for coolant fan, the dealer was even cheaper than pep boys, Tyler needs to get up off his ass and deal with the stuff he said he would take care of, he made promises, it's not Joes job to cover up what you said you would do. I brought Pep Boys my dodge minivan and they did a wonderful job. I highly recommend Pepboys and the service Manager. The service department went above and beyond the call of duty. They even gave me a box of kurig coffee to take home with me back to Florida. All I can say if you ever need any service work done in Buffalo , New York go to Pepboys. Ok. I arrived back to Florida. Little did I know after paying over $2,100 dollars they forgot to put back the brake caliper screw. I drove over 1,300 miles back to Florida. I was told that if I was to brake my vehicle hard if someone cut me off I could have gotten into a major accident all depending on where I was driving. I had my fiancé in my vehicle on this trip. I went to Niagara Falls before the journey back to Florida. This is a very good company but my life and my fiancé's life were put at risk. I was extremely upset this happened. I take my older car here a lot for service. They are always very professional. I never get the sense they are trying to upselling me something I don't need. They never act like they are doing me some huge favor by letting me be their customer. The one thing that really sold me on this location was when I got a nail in my tire and needed it fixed. I had 3 tire places tell me to come back in a week and wanted to charge me $300. I took it to pep boys they were able to plug the hole and didn't even charge me. read more

I went in earlier today to get my tires replaced because I've gotten a flat a few days prior. I made an appointment over the phone two days ago for Saturday's at 12 pm and decided to just wait in the lobby for my car because it wouldn't take too long for them to change my tires. However, I was completely wrong. It took over five hours for the mechanics to finish up my car. Again, just as a reminder, I made an appointment days prior, so they knew I was coming in at 12pm today to get my tires change and they still took an ridiculous amount of time to do a simple task. While waiting in the lobby, many people showed up hours after me and was able to get out way before they finish my car. There seems to be no order in which car they choose to work on at the moment. I just had a flat tire, it should take no longer than an hour (maybe an hour and a half) to work on my car. I should not be waiting for five hours just to get a new tire. Even if they were so backed up and couldn't find time to work on my car, They should of told me! The people working the counter knew I was waiting, I told them three times I'll be waiting in the lobby and ask them multiple times for updates on my car. It also didn't help that I just saw the mechanics talking (and get into a heated argument at one point) to one another for most of the time I was there. read more

Disclaimer: this is a long review but believe me, you'll want to read the whole review. I've been to Pep Boys before, at another location in Atlanta and I remember the Pep Boys in Atlanta being pretty decent. I needed Brakes so I came to this location on Elmwood Avenue, due to their close and convenient location. These guys replaced my brakes (both front and rear) about a year ago. Immediately after the brakes were replaced, my car had an intermittent screeching noise. Knowing that I had just gotten the brakes done, I ignored the sound and kept driving my car (for a whole year). Well, as time progressed, the noise got louder and louder so I finally decided to have it looked at, and took it back to Pep Boys. When I walked in, I asked what my warranties were on the brakes. They informed me that I had only purchased the front brakes (which I found out later, this was incorrect). They took my car back to look at it, and then informed me that not only did I need rear brakes, but even more URGENT is I need new rear wheel bearings, and then they quoted me a price of over $1100.00 total for both items. I asked further about the wheel bearings, and then the guys said it's only the bearings that need to be changed, but since he can't find parts for JUST the bearings, he'd have to change the whole hub. After seeing me struggle to make a decision, the guy said if I could only choose one repair today, he suggest that I do the rear wheel bearings ASAP because it's in very bad condition and is making a lot of noise. He continued on to say this is a big safety concern because my wheels could literally fall off my car while driving! Needless to say, this scared me immensely so I told him to go ahead and fix the rear wheel bearings. Luckily for me, they actually didn't have the parts, but said they could pick it up within minutes. While they were picking up the parts, I called the dealership from where I purchased the car, to see if the wheel bearings were under warranty. I couldn't get anyone on the phone from the dealership, so after fighting with this major decision, I decided to postpone repairing the wheel bearings, risk driving the car, and come back after I have some type of warranty verification. The next morning, I decided to drop my car off at the dealership and told them nothing further, other than my brakes were making noise, and asked if they can also check the condition of my rear wheel bearings. The dealership looked at it, and said you have after-market brake parts on here, and you have absolutely NO LUBE on the brakes. They suggested a full brake cleaning service for both the front and rear brakes (which would include cleaning, grinding off rust and lubing it), and then see if the noise persists. I agreed to have it cleaned. After they cleaned my brakes, my car was no longer making the screeching noise. The dealership also informed me both me that both my front and rear brakes were fine and did not need to be replaced (only cleaned an lubed). Furthermore, there's nothing wrong with my rear wheel bearings. These guys tried to swindle me out of $1100.00 for repairs that I DID NOT NEED. I will NEVER go back to the Pep Boys at this location. I would suggest AVOIDING this place at all cost. Either they don't know what they are talking about, or if they do know, they are dirty crooks - and neither one of those qualities are good for business. I'd give the Pep Boys on Elmwood Avenue a 0 out of 5 if possible, but since I can't, I'm giving them a 1 out of 5. The one star is for not breaking my car before giving it back to me. read more

Great service here! Always come to get my oil changed and they are super nice and do not take too long as long as you make an appointment. Had to get new windshield wipers once and they offered to help where in the past other places have not. After AAA came to the rescue, Pep Boys helped my mom and I get back on the road. We were planning to spend the morning at Five Points Bakery until I accidentally slashed my mother's rear passenger tire while trying to park. Who knew that the construction fence I was attempting to park next to was sticking out past the curb and had a sharp metal piece on it! All we heard was a blast of air spewing out of the tire. My mom got out and realized we weren't going anywhere... Flat tire was an understatement! Either way, fortunately we both have AAA and they came quickly to assess our situation. Flat bed and all we were off to find a new tire! The convenience and extended hours brought us to Pep Boys - pretty much our only option for getting a new tire at 2pm on a Sunday. The gentlemen behind the counter were enjoying themselves with a pizza party watching the Bills try to win when we arrived but were quick to help us with what we needed. The waiting area was accommodating and I couldn't have asked for anything more really. In and out in approximately an hour, I was pleased with the service and convenience. Unfortunately, the price tag of $120 for ONE tire erred beyond the side of ridiculousness. Although I wish we could have supported a local business, I'm happy the problem was solved in a matter of two or three hours. read more

Come for the buy two get two tire prices, stay for the rip offs. I hate chain shops for the most part, Mavis, Firestone, now Pep Boys. Pep Boys had a Black Friday deal, cool I needed tires. At least they can't screw up tires right? Well, they didn't mess the tire part up, it's everything else they messed up. Called them up for the deal, well they were out of stock locally so I had to go in, pay for the tires and then have them installed at a later date, cool, no problem. Went into the store and probably a after a good 45min, Ben took care of me and got me cashed out. Not after trying to sell me a road hazard warranty and TPMS rebuild before he could even charge me for that (has to be charged when the tires are installed). He stated, "as a master mechanic I'll sell it to you for 7.50$ a tire just so that you don't end up coming back here and yelling at me when you get a nail in your tire". Whatever, paid for the tires and left. Ben noted they would be in between Wednesday that week and Wednesday the following week. So Tuesday the following week comes around and I decide to call and find out what the eta of the new tires is. The person I spoke to said, oh yeah they've been here for 3-4 days, someone should've called you to schedule the appointment. Sorry about that. No biggie, I scheduled and appointment for the following Monday as it's my wife's car and she was working second shifts. So the day rolls around to have them installed, I drop her car off and ask if it'll be ready by 12pm so my wife can get to work. No problem, I'm told. During the repair I get a notification that I need to call the store for the work to proceed. I do so and the rep (Chris perhaps) says must be a glitch in the matrix. They're checking the alignment and he will check back with me in 20 minutes. 50 minutes later he calls and says it needs an alignment, to be fair it probably did. So I authorized it and asked if it would still be ready by 12pm (I dropped the vehicle off at 8am). He said yep, 12ish it'll be ready. I call at 11:55am to see if it'll be ready and he tells me yep it's ready. It needs a strut due to some damage and they couldn't get the camber quite right. So I head in as my wife has to get to work. I walk in to pay for my install. I was quoted 190, so with tax maybe 209. The total was 230. I paid too quick before realizing the difference. But, they said the car was ready and it wasn't so Ben said 5min and it'll be out. Meanwhile I review the receipt and yep, tried to charge me 30$ for road hazard. I expressed I didn't want road hazard and Ben (master mechanic) said Pep Boys requires the road hazard warranty, it's non negotiable. He claimed he took that out of the price of the tires, which I refuted he didn't. So finally he refunded the road hazard fee. Then, while I'm still waiting, calls me to the side to express that he still gave it to me but didn't charge me. Then there's the timeliness issue. They said the car was ready and I had to wait 30min in the store for them to finish up. My wife had to get to work and was late as a result after I asked numerous times if the work would be finished in time and was assured it would. Ben also tried to keep the alignment report from me, until I requested it. Reason being, Ben being the master mechanic he is, didn't realize I'm an engineer and I have performed many car repairs with my father who was a mechanic. While technically Ben was correct that the alignment wasn't quite in spec, it wasn't so far out of spec that it would cause the severe tire wear he says it will. So, if you like sleazy mechanics trying to sneak in extra charges. Go to Pep Boys. If you like mechanics that try to flaunt that they're a master mechanic to then try and rip you off, go to Pep Boys. If you like honest repairs, completed in a timely fashion with no hidden fees, DO NOT go to Pep Boys... I for one will not be back! read more

I made an appointment a week ahead of time for an inspection as I cannot afford the time to leave my vehicle and must wait. I arrived at 8:50, 10 minutes early. The counter guy informed me that there were three people ahead of me and the inspection will be at 10:30! MISMANAGED, RUDE, INADEQUATE... I'll start by saying this was always my go to repair shop and had good experiences up til today October 28, 2020. I had called Monday the 26th at 1 pm to schedule my appointment. The gentleman I spoke with confirmed an appointment for me at 12:30 on Wednesday the 28th. When I showed up for my appointment the sales person did not have record of my appointment and did not have any concern in helping me with an appointment. It was only for a NYS Inspection so it more than likely could have been fit in. I'm very busy and only have limited time so when I book an appointment I expect to have it. After the salesman brushed me off I called the customer service number and they offered no rectification either. I will take my business elsewhere and recommend others do as well. read more

I typically do business with the Pep Boys in Lockport. Those workers should come to this Buffalo store and train these guys how to work. This store is absolutely awful. They are slow, can care less about their customers, and most of the time are never around to provide any help. I would only come to this location on Elmwood if you have ALL day (or a few days) to wait around. I made an appointment to have my car checked at a certain time. I dropped my car off and left. I had to call them 3 hours later to check in. They said, "Oh we were just about to call you. You need new brakes. It can't be done until tomorrow. It will be done by 2pm." I come back the next day at 5pm to pick up my car. "Oh he's just finishing up..." 50 minutes later....... finally get my car. Customer service here is terrible. The guys in Lockport Pep Boys would give you a call and a heads up when they are running late. Common customer courtesy. I would steer clear from Pep Boys on Elmwood. After using very poor judgment and taking my car to Pep Boys on Elmwood for several years I was becoming sadly accustomed to poor, over-priced service from young, inexperienced, rude mechanics and indifferent staff (with limited exceptions). They have one REALLY nice desk guy who's name escapes me (tall guy with glasses and light brownish hair) but the rest range between meh and suck-fest. At one point I was met by an ex-student from one of the schools I used to sub at - I recognized the kid immediately because he was cocky, lazy, and corner-cutting as a student. This did NOT instill confidence. The longer I went here, the more I noticed the service decline, the wait times get longer and longer (even for basic, pre-scheduled things like oil changes) and the bills get higher. Their billing system is particularly annoying - they have a magic book they pull out that tells them exactly how long a job should take and what they should charge for it, allowing no wiggle room for cost. Just as an example (not literal pricing) let's say the book says it should take 3 hours to change thing x and they charge $70 an hour in labor and $100 in parts. Thing x now costs $310 to change, no matter what - the mechanic will rush through it in an hour but you still pay $210 in labor. This does not encourage quality service and leaves zero room for bartering if the shop wants to let you bring in your own parts, figure out an alternate solution, etc which most mom and pop shops will do. I was already seriously considering starting to shop around, and after my tire went randomly flat whilst driving to work I had AAA tow it to Midas on a friend's suggestion. As soon as they had the car up on the lift Midas quickly identified the problem and brought me right into the garage to show me - my aluminum rim had small cracks in about 30 places on the inside (the car was in my line of sight the whole time, so clearly Midas didn't do it)!!! I had just had my back brakes replaced not long before at PBs - it stood to reason one of their mechanics had beat my rim, probably slightly rusty and hard to get off on an older car with very big tires, with a non-padded metal hammer, causing hairline fractures that eventually split over time from the weight of the car, letting the tire deflate (a common amateur move). Never again, folks, never again. read more

Superbowl Sunday dawned bright and sunny this year, but soon revealed a big bummer: my tire had gone completely, mysteriously flat. And finding a few good folks who were willing to fix my problems instead of chowing down on chicken wings was no easy task. Most mom-and-pops are closed on Sundays, and especially in Buffalo, where football is religion. Thus, I found myself towing my car to this Pep Boys chain location, which is open every Sunday, even this most auspicious of Sundays. And boy, am I glad I did! The guys here got my car right in, hoisted her up, and found that the tire just needed to be re-sealed and filled. Though they spent about a half hour of their time and put the store's own materials into the repair, when they came out to hand me my keys, they told me there'd be no charge. NO CHARGE. As in, zero dollars. This, to me, was about as exciting as seeing my team win the Superbowl. Moreso, in fact, because (and sports fans, don't pelt me with pizza here), unlike the big game, tires really do matter. When one goes flat, you realize these big rubber things are the foundation on which your whole life rests, and they're accordingly expensive. Trundling off in my old Corolla with four newly-filled tires and a bill for $0.00, I felt like Eli Manning taking home his new Corvette. Pep Boys, I gotta hand it to you. This awesomely generous customer service policy is a genius play, and I wish more people knew about it. DAMN THE AWFUL CONDITIONS OF ROADS IN THE CITY OF BUFFALO! after just replacing two front tires on my beloved Mini back in april, i find a bubble in the sidewall of one of said tires. of course its not under warranty, despite driving on it for only a month and a half, but Josh at this location (where i purchased back in april) heard my frustration, and he tried to ease my pain as much as possible. in less than thirty minutes and for less than half of a brand new tire (which he rightfully could have charged me for), Josh set me up with a new tire, and without a moment to lose, cuz this chica is on her way to Wanderlust Vermont in just two days. thanks for going the extra mile, Pep Boys, really...Namaste to y'all. read more
