I just had a BAD experience at Pep Boys in Germsntown. I took my car there before when I had a flat tire and was pleased with the service. I'm getting ready to go out of town and took the car over today at about 130 to get checked out because the tires seem to be shaking. When the customer in front of me finished at about 140, the one free cashier who had been helping him started doing paperwork! I heard her tell somebody that somebody didn't call the night before etc. I stood in line until about 147. I told myself I was going to leave if I stayed until 150. When she finally called me over at 147 and I told her what I wanted, she asked if I could leave the car. I asked how long and she replied she didn't know because so many were ahead of me. This is understandable, but it was the way she said it. After that wait- which may seem like only a few minutes but is a long time when standing in line- and the attitude, I left. read more

Avoid Pep Boys! It is a bad place for your car I have a 2013 Toyota Prius and was looking for an oil change. Then I received an email offer from the Pep Boys office. It was a nice offer and didn't want to miss it. The offer was "GET THE $100 SMART SERVICE PACK" for Synthetic Oil Change, For Fuel System Treatment, Tire Rotation, and Comprehensive Maintenance Check. Then I called them and booked an appointment. When I went to there but the technician said " It cannot be done with the same day appointment and You have to make another appointment". Then I booked an appointment for the next day and then I dropped my Toyota Prius at 20900-A Frederick Rd, Germantown location at 4:00 pm and waited until 7:20 pm. Then they told me that the technicians were unable to reset the service reminder button. I told them if they cannot do it at that time, I can take my car and bring it back soon. I took the car and the airbag sign was flashing on the screen. The buttons stopped working. I was unable to change even a radio station and navigate some other things. It stopped working. I called the service manager, Mr. Sergio, and told him that my car didn't have any problem before but those things were happening. He asked me to take it back to the service center. I took it back and two guys started to reset the service reminder and fix the airbag which was flashing. Unfortunately, they were unable to fix the issues. Finally, they advised me to take my car to a Toyota dealer and get those things fixed. I drove to Jim Coleman Toyota center and they told me I need to pay $1378.63. I called the service manager, Mr. Sergio, and he informed me about the issue and sent him an email with the repair information and the amount of money they asked me for. The service manager emailed me back saying. The issue was ongoing and his company is not liable for the repair cost. Remember! I didn't have any problem before and the Pep Boys technician evaluation checklist confirmed that! The bottom line is the technicians at Pep Boys are not professionals. Needed car wheel alignment so called Pep Boys in Germantown and was told to make an appointment to avoid delays in waiting if just walked in with the car for service. Instead of just walk-in I setup an appointment for Saturday 11am. Got to the center on time and dropped off the car. I was informed that it would take about 1.5 hr and had the option to either wait at the center or drop and come back. Pep Boys offers Lyft up to 10 miles so I dropped off the car and went home. After about 2 hrs at 1:30 I called the center for status update. The rep on the phone asked for the car model, year and what's it in for. I gave the info and was then informed that my car was being worked on and would take another hr. I then came to the shop at 3 to pick up the car. I get here and find out that my car hasn't even been looked at and haven't stated any work on it. The rep at the center tells me that it would take another 30-45 mins to complete. This is insane. I had an appointment and even after 4 hours of it being at the center, it wasn't even looked it. If the rep tells me that is would only take an additional al 30-45 mins. How crazy is it that the actual work is only 30-45 mins but even in 4 hours with appointment it's not done. I had other plans for the day and expected to be somewhere at 3. When you receive an email confirmation that your item is ready for pick up doesn't that typically mean it's ready for pick up? Not here. A quick 5 minute trip turned into a ridiculous 15 minute mess. I was greeted by Daniel and I was informed that my order wasn't even in their system. Then he proceeded to look for the item in the shelves and couldn't locate where it is. He had to ask a manager and she had no problem locating it so maybe checking the system for the aisle number would've saved him a lot of time. When I was about to check out I quickly asked him what the return policy was and replied with an attitude. He had no idea what the policy was and asked me if I wanted him to ask the manager. Absolutely not, I didn't want to waste more time than I needed to. He didn't want to honor the online discounted price for what I had it originally for store pick-up which made no sense. Went in this morning for a wind shield wiper purchase and change, the whole process took no more than 10 minute! Service inside was polite and to the point, outside replacement was amiable and fast. Overall great experience. Over the years I have noticed the place inside has become worn out, paint on the walls is cracking and waiting area is a bit boring.. wish owners would spend on some repairs/enhancements! great place to get things done though. read more

The service can be friendly, but the execution and timeliness is AS BAD as the reviews state. Here is the one upside to this Pep Boys location- The service counter was well staffed and you could always find someone to talk to, listen to your gripes, and check on your car. I've been down the road at NTB and there is usually only one person at the counter mostly ignoring you and trying to look busy. I stopped in for an alignment. I had an appointment. I was told when I came by there was only one car ahead of me that should finish in 45 minutes and appointments (me) get priority so I would be next. My job was only expected to take 25 minutes after that. I was there 4 hours. In the end (after a screw up and a long delay) the car was aligned as expected. Don't come in here with any expectations of things getting done when they promise. I'm not sure if it's best to leave it or stay, though. If you walk out, you will definitely get bumped by another angry customer who is shouting at the service desk. You will also find, as I did, that if you leave for an hour expecting the car to be completed when you get back...that no progress has been made because you were not there to say, "why is my car still not in the rack?" You can tell a place is used to giving bad service when the folks at the counter just take it in stride...they are so used to angry customers that it doesn't even phase them. It's just part of the job. Dozens of people come up to the counter pissed off every day (is the impression I got). There was another customer yelling at them while I was there. In a mis-step on my part (not staying on top of them) his car got put in front of mine because he was shouting louder. This is comparable with the service I have experienced at any chain auto service counter. You do not get the most experienced or mature technicians who are great at their job or great at prioritizing their time. The techs are sheltered from the customer. The service counter blames any problems you experience on the techs. It is nobody's problem but yours! And if somebody comes in and buys $1000 set of tires, they will get put ahead of your $80 alignment. You may have a good experience here if you set your expectations accordingly. And be careful about the up-sell on other service items when you come in for something else. This would be a single star, but the service counter was accommodating to my situation. I came back to check around 2:30pm and my car was not even touched. It is already 3pm and still no progress. I went to get my breaks changed & PepBoys advised I had only 10% left on my rear breaks & 30% left on my front breaks. I felt like they were charging me a bit much so I went elsewhere 3-4 weeks later & explained to them that PepBoys let me know I didn't have much break pads left and they needed to be replaced. They had TWO mechanics double check my breaks & saw I absolutely did not need them changed & had about 70% usage left. They called me out to my car to actually look at what it looks like and I'm most definitely not due for a change. I absolutely recommend getting more than one opinion before paying these people hundreds or thousands of dollars to do work that does not need to be done!! read more

I got a nail in one of my tires. I was able to get it fixed same day. They seemed really busy at this location but was able to fit me in since I came right when they opened. When my car was finished the guy didn't charge me anything! I don't know if that is standard but they were really nice. I thought everything went smooth as silk; checked out tires online and chose a set of Coopers which were on special, buy 3, get one free plus free installation; scheduled an appointment for later the same day; received an email confirming the appointment and then another one a few minutes later cancelling the appointment. When I phoned, puzzled, I was informed that I should have scheduled an appointment 24 hours in advance (nothing about this on the website!); they were short staffed, I was told. And then I was quoted for tires I had not chosen. No, they were Coopers, not Goodyear. When I told the installer this, he proceeded to quote me a much higher price for the Coopers. Told me to get the price the website quoted, I should bring a screenshot on my phone. This was a quote from the Pep Boys website, and they had sent me an email to confirm the style of tire and price! My last week, dealing with Pep Boys ... - Dropped my Saab off to the Germantown, MD location on Saturday to have a flat tire replaced. - Returned Sunday to find that the drivers side door was bent and wasn't close to being able to latch. - Had the manager absolutely scream at me in front of his garage technicians about how I brought the car to him with a drivers door that didn't close, and now was trying to blame him. Repeatedly called me a liar, to my face. - Had the manager call me Sunday night, after he had reviewed the security footage, and apologize ... he could see clearly that it was not put on the lift properly, and accepted responsibility for the damage. Committed to refund the tire replacement, get the car towed to a body shop & pay for the repair, and reimburse me for a rental car until the work was done. - Monday, I went in and received the refund for the work, and was told I would hear from the corporate office to set up the details for the rental car. - Now it's Saturday ... my car is still sitting in the Pep Boys garage bay - hasn't even been taken to a body shop yet. And, I still haven't talked to anyone about rental car reimbursement - despite calling their maddening customer support system multiple times every day. I try not to rant or badmouth business on social media, but I've left voicemails & emails for days, and still can't make any headway ... Brought my Jetta here to have four tires installed. It's a 2016 and I've never had any issues with it, but wanted to get new tires since I was nearing 60k miles. Told them I'd like to get it done before I have to drive to NC. Made an appt for 8 AM, got there to be told they were waiting on one tire. Went home and waited till the next afternoon. Come back the next day to drop it off, and they call to tell me one of my rims are bent. Never had an issue before. They say I have to buy a new rim. Came back the NEXT day because my steering wheel has a ton of vibration and noticed they put the old tire on another wheel, so was concerned things got mixed up. They didn't tell me they had switched the bent rim to the back driver side now, and got frustrated with me for not knowing. Nobody told me anything until the end of the day after I dropped it off in the morning. Most likely, they bent my rim in the process of taking off the old tires. I NEVER had any issues beforehand and had taken it to the dealer a month earlier for an oil change and a overall checkup. They didn't notice anything. Spent $700. Now another $200 for a rim and $100 for mounting and balancing. Don't waste your money or time coming to this shop. read more

I have used Pep Boys Germantown on several occasions and have always been very satisfied with their services. Got a flat on Christmas morning so decided it was time for 4 new tires. My first stop was Pep Boys Germantown. Got a reasonable estimate and made an appointment for the next day. The next day, was told that estimate did not include alignment, so add another $100 to the estimate. However printed estimate went from $515 to $702. When I questioned the amount, was told to ignore that estimate. I would be given a 10% discount when I picked up the car so the total would be $569 including the alignment. Although I was told service would take 1 1/2 to 2 hours the day before, I was told it would take 3 hours instead. Was walking through Home Depot next door, when Pep Boys called saying that the four tires I was expecting were not available, only 2 in stock, but they could upgrade to 2 higher priced tires. Cost would go up to $602 without alignment. I walked back over to Pep Boys to discuss options. Was told that 4 tires were showing in the computer but only 2 were available, but they could order the additional 2 but would have to come back 4 days later. By this time, I was getting extremely frustrated with the ever-changing situation. I expressed my total disappointment with the whole experience and felt like it was a potential "bait and switch". Ultimately, I left very angry that I had wasted my time and will never use their services again. I passed by Mr. Tire in Gaithersburg on my way home and was given 4 better tires at a better price, including the alignment and I was on my way home in an hour and a half! read more

I scheduled a service appointment on their website for 9am on a Sunday. Their website estimated that my service appointment would take 120 minutes. I got to their store on time and stood in line for 15 minutes. When I got to the check-in guy, he told me I would need to leave my car with them all day. He said they were still working on appointments from the day before. They knew the day before that they were severely backed up but couldn't be bothered to send an email or to call to let me know that the 2-hour appointment was now an all-day appointment. They made no attempt to reschedule. They later sent an email that said, "Sorry you couldn't make your appointment ...". Please help me to understand PepBoy's scheduling system. I'm currently at the PepBoys in Germantown, MD. I have a confirmed appointment for today at 12:00 noon to get a headlight bulb replaced. When I arrived 10 min. early for the appointment, I was told that it would be several hours before they could get to my car. When I explained that I had an appointment, I was told that the appointment time didn't really mean anything and that all it meant was that they would get to my car sometime today. Why would PepBoys invest in an appointment system if it doesn't honor the appointed times. Seems like a wasted investment if it only serves to upset customers. read more

I booked an appointment A WEEK IN ADVANCE for all four tires and alignment. The tires I chose weren't in stock but should've been there by the time of my appointment according to the site when I set the appointment. I show up 10 minutes early, dropped my keys off and left thinking my car would be ready in a couple of hours. I get a call ONE HOUR later with them telling me the tires I chose weren't in stock and tried to sell me tires they did have but was going to cost about $150 extra of what I was expecting to pay. I work two jobs while being a part time student in college and a husband/father on top, I don't have time to be wasting and it's upsetting I have to wait another week to get this done. I'm not coming back to Pepboy's, very unprofessional. the least they could've done is tell me upfront the tires weren't in stock and not have wasted my time. read more

This particular establishment is a complete disaster. I went there for an oil change, brake inspection, tire rotation/wheel alignment, and to have fluids checked and filled. Apparently they only do "flushes" and don't top off coolant or brake fluid. I told them my hood was difficult to open but it's fine once you push up on it, they refused the oil change due to "too much damage" which is hilarious because not a single shop refused to open the hood the last seven years. Then none of the other services were performed or even checked. 100% do not recommend. Unorganized and laughable. Take your car somewhere else! read more

(I had been trying to get in with Walmart Auto Center for a week and had decided to drive there after dozens of unanswered calls - but there was no way to get in and nobody ever answered the phone.) I got VERY frustrated, saw Pep Boys was across the street, walked right in to the Service Desk and instantly got a quote for what I needed done, plus different tire options and amazing, friendly customer service from Matt. They got me in right away, had me out in under two hours, and the price for the work I needed done was $200-$300 less than any quotes I've gotten from other places. I have been taking my car to this Pep Boys location for the last several oil changes. So far I have not had any issues with the oil change service. I usually make an appointment and it takes about an hour or so. I have taken my car here for diagnostics in the past and they were not able to identify the issue, but still recommended a service. While the service recommended was useful for regular maintenance, it did not alleviate my initial issue. I would recommend Pep Boys for regular services and maintenance. Not major work or for serious diagnostic issues. read more

I've really only bought tires from Pep Boys and this location specifically. They had a great deal going on online and I was able to purchase my tires and reserve an appointment all through their website. Prior to doing so, I did call them but was quoted a higher price than what I was seeing online so I asked and they said that because there are many deals going online, prices vary but either way its still the same service. I saved almost $100 by placing my order online and coming in the store the next day to get my tires installed. The whole appointment took a little over and hour which was expected. My only concern was that the shop didnt look like it was thoroughly cleaned because of the virus. Every other car shop that I have visited since this broke out has been very good about keeping their waiting area clean but everything in their waiting area looked grimy. read more

I was parked in the parking lot when I found that my tire was completely flat to the rim. I saw that the pep boys was conveniently right there so I figured I'd go in and tell someone about my situation and see if there was anyways they could help me out. I waited at service for almost 5 minutes while the guy at the front was on the phone. No gesture that he'd be right with me or anything just continued with his conversation. Two other guys came out from the back and he stopped his conversation to talk to them then finally hung up. Neither him nor the other two guys acknowledged me I just stood there as we all just stared at each other until I told them to go F themselves and walked out. I took my car in for an oil change and to check a slow leak on one tire. I had an appointment. First, this is a new car and I was told it required synthetic oil. I didnt know so I accepted this. Afterwards, I read my owners manual and it turns out it does not require synthetic oil. Second, after 2 hours waiting for an oil change with an appointment, I asked what's up. I had to walk, with an employee, through the shop and the parking lot to find my car. Third, upon paying my bill, they gave me the wrong key. Took them 5 minutes to find MY car key.... so did they actually do any work. Fourth, I asked them to check a slow leak in one tire. I was told that both back tires were dry rotted. A few weeks later I took my car to another shop to only find out that it was plugged tire that couldnt be replugged. So I did end up buying ONE tire from that shop. After waiting an hour and 15 minutes my car was still not even touched. after inquiring with a young lady at the front desk I was informed that it would be another hour before they touch it. It is very unprofessional to have your customers waiting indefinitely for hours for a simple oil change. Please make your appointments mean something and not just an arbitrary time. Also when asked to speak to the manager I was agreed with quite a bit of condescension from the young lady behind the counter. The manager seemed kind enough, but did nothing to correct the issue. I feel really bad about my experience at the Pep Boys today in Maryland. I spent 3X more money then I should have. So last week I bought a second-hand car from New Jersey and had to get it registered and inspected in Maryland. I brought it to the inspection station in Maryland and they worked on it for 2 days and charged me $1500 for all the work to fix everything. The one thing they could not perform was a wheel alignment, so they told me to go to another mechanic to get the wheel alignment and then come back with the paperwork to finish the inspection. They said everything was fine with the car except it needed that final wheel alignment to finish everything. So I first took the car to a Jiffy Lube last Thursday. In my previous vehicle in New Jersey I had a good experience with Jiffy Lube so wanted to give them my business. They ran a diagnostics and said they could finish the wheel alignment in less than an hour for $100. But I wanted to have some other cosmetic work done that was not required by the inspection and they said the parts for that would take a couple days to arrive. So I waited for the parts to arrive. I waited until yesterday but Jiffy Lube still did not have the parts. So I decided to visit the Pep Boys today because it was closer and the corona virus meant that I should not go far from home. So I made an appointment at Pep Boys last night and arrived this morning. After a few minutes of giving them my car, the mechanic asked me to come see the vehicle. He said it needed a new tie rod end on the left side. He shook the tire and said it had a lot of movement and the new outer tie rod would fix it. I told him it did not need that. I told him the inspector said it did not need that (I specifically asked him previously about that because I had another car that recently needed new tie rods) , and I said that Jiffy Lube also said it needed nothing more than an alignment. I told him I did not want to get it. His response was that the inspector would lose his license if he allowed this to go through. i said the license was good and both he and Jiffy Lube thought no need to get a new tie rod. Ultimately, because of timing and my need to get home super fast, I acquiesced to the tie rod. I did not want to call them thieves and liars and complain, so i took it. I was charged a little more than an hour's worth of work too for that tie rod even though it should have taken far less time than that (it was an outer rod) and the entire wheel alignment itself took a little over an hour. I paid nearly $300 for a service that should have cost about $100. Then when I went back to the inspector today he was amazed. he said there was absolutely no reason for the tie rod. Furthermore, the inspector said they should have given me a diagnostics sheet detailing the red line in which they aligned the car's wheels. Pep Boys did not give me anything like that. I will never ever use Pep Boys again. Oh one more thing: in their database they had my name and phone number, but the email address was for someone else with a similar name. How the heck did their internal databases get screwed up? What type of security are they practicing at their POS or in their internal systems to have a data leak like that? read more

I've brought my car to Pep boys a few times over the past year, and I've been pretty happy with their service. I've had the oil changed twice so far, and both times only took about 60-90 minutes in total. This is way more convenient than going to Precision Auto on Middlebrook, which can strangely take most of the day (about 5-6 hours?!). If you fill out the survey after getting your oil changed, you often get a coupon for future services. This past winter, my car was having some issues starting up. I had thought it was an electrical issue, so when they estimated that it was the battery, I assumed they were right. Nothing else was coming up in their diagnostics. Not having any idea what was going on, I agreed to have a somewhat new battery replaced. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem. A few weeks later, I found out from my own lengthy online research that the problem was actually the gear shift. I'm not sure why Pep Boys couldn't figure this out and why they thought the problem stemmed from the battery. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that the battery may have been affected from the times when I couldn't get the car started. Overall, I'm still pretty happy with my experience with this Pep Boys location. The staff is polite, the service is quick, and the location is super convenient (near Target, TJ Maxx, Staples, Aldi, and lots more). Best of all, they offer coupons, which I always search for online before heading there for any services. I highly recommend making an appointment a week or two in advance if you want to get an oil change done as soon as they open at 8 AM. Otherwise, you might have to take the next block at 9 AM. read more

Do Not bring your car here!!! Dropped my car off due to a flat tire. I didn't expect them to repair it immediately so I dropped it off. I called the next day and they didn't even know what car I was talking about! Couldn't find the ticket OR my key!!! After several hours I call back because no one updated me and the guy says you'll need a new tire (I had to ask if they found my key). He said we'll get your car taken care of 1st thing in the morning. Next day I hadn't heard anything by noon so I call and the guy gives me bs that my car will be ready in an hour. Still no call after 2 hours...so I take an Uber over and my car had still not been repaired or even worked on! Just sitting there for 2 whole days! I take my car and drive 2 miles down the road on a flat tire to Nissan. Pep Boys wasted my time and was not truthful about anything and they are extremely unorganized!
