Scammers! Run while you can. They literally quoted me $2,800 stating my radiator, upper/lower hose, and thermostat was broken. Towed my vehicle out of there, took it to a different shop and they charged me a total of $220 to fix. Apparently only a bypass cap was cracked and needed to be replaced. My thermostat was broken as well but that was fixed too included in the $220. I am convinced a mechanic did not even look under my hood and they solely diagnosed my car based off the issues I stated. For starters, Pep Boys is almost always crowded and even when it's not crowded, you will feel as through the guys behind the counter are completely disinterested in you and your car troubles. I brought my car in a while back because when I turned, cold water was pouring out onto my feet (or the passenger's feet, depending on the direction of the turn). My not-so-car-savvy brain thought, "Cold water, must be something in the AC system." I went to PepBoys and explained what was happening and that I suspected it was the AC system. I was charged $120 to "diagnose" the problem. When I picked up my car they said they couldn't find the problem (but they sure were happy to charge me for the time they supposedly spent looking!). In frustration, I thought of NPR and the Car Talk program. I logged into their message boards and posted about my problem. Within 5 minutes, I had the exact name of the hose that was clogged and causing the water from the AC system to pool up and then spill onto my feet. I went back to PepBoys with this new knowledge and sure enough, NOW they could find the problem and it was fixed in under a half hour. I asked if they could fill my washer fluid while they were working on the car (and mentioned I had the bottle of fluid in my trunk), but they "forgot" to do that. I've left PepBoys for Precision Auto. They are world's better, treat me like a valued customer, and actually listen when I tell them about my car. PepBoys may be a bigger shop, but bigger does NOT mean better. Take your car to Precision instead. read more

Took my car in for a simple battery installation. Was told they wouldn't get to it for an hour, but it would only take 15 minutes once they started. Fair enough. The service ticket was generated at 12:49, with a "promise time" of 3:00. Two hours and 55 minutes later it was finally finished, after we watched it sit there, hood open, for an hour with no one working on it. The service attendant told us that it was because there were other cars ahead of us, which I could accept had we not watched another man arrive, set up an oil change, get serviced, check out and leave - all within 45 minutes. During the last two hours there were only two other customers, the oil change guy and another gentleman that arrived about 20 minutes before we were finally finished. No one else arrived, or CHECKED OUT during that time, so where were all of these other customers that were ahead of us? The service staff was less than helpful. The manager grudgingly gave us $10 off after we pointed out that we had been there 45 minutes past the "promise time" posted on our service ticket. They tried to say the time on the ticket was just an estimate. When we pointed out that it said "promise time", they actually had to read it to verify what we were saying - they don't even know what their own service ticket says!!!! Suffice it to say, I will NEVER give Pep Boys another dollar of my business. Had anyone genuinely apologized for the inconvenience I would feel differently. read more

Wish I could give a zero. Don't ever ever ever come here. I used to come to this pep boys years ago but the service is horrible. I've been here at least 2-3 times in the last 3 yrs and it's always a 5 hour no matter when you come. I visited recently for an oil change, had a 10 am appointment on the weekday. Came back after 3 hours and my car didn't get service yet I talked to the rep and he told me my car would be next then I came back 2 hours later and my car was still there. After 5 hours he tells me we are down a tech. Dude wasted my whole morning. So don't go there they suck! read more

I've had two experiences here. Tried to get tires. Was told it would take 45 minutes, an hour later was told I was next. Later told they were almost finished, then after three hours found out they never even started. Left and bought tires someplace else. Second try, went in to get a bulb. The guy at the counter seemed like he never heard of Volvo. I have pretty low expectations for auto parts places, and this place lowers the bar. read more

When I when to pick up later in the afternoon the representative was rude, I had to yell so he can hear me, and he decided to help the next person in line. They are liars don't believe that 30 minutes oil change I waited over an hour to get my oil change. I took an appointment with them for 5 pm but got there at 4:30 but didn't leave until 6 pm. Took my car in for new front tires and an oil change. They recommended an alignment so I got that too. When I got the car back I started driving and it did not seem aligned at all. I also looked up at the sticker and it said they put conventional oil in when my car takes synthetic. I took it to another mechanic to check the alignment and they gave me a note saying the alignment was off. I am going back tomorrow to ask about getting my money back on the alignment and ask if they actually did put conventional oil in and will update after that. I also noticed they charged for a road hazard warranty which I asked to opt out of but I expect I won't get that back since I did sign the receipt. :( Update: they took the warranty off no problem and assured me they put synthetic in but refused the alignment. Pretty disappointed overall, but one bright spot was an assistant manager named Mr. Singh. Although he couldn't help me, he was polite and professional the whole time. read more

Approximately 1 year ago we purchased 4 replacement tires from PepBoys in Germantown Md. Unfortunately all 4 tires developed an expected defect. David Connelly the PepBoys manager helped replaced all the tires and preformed the 4 wheel alignment with out hesitation. I would like to say it was Excellent customer service and follow up. I went against my better judgment after reading some of these reviews. I recently had a flat tire and needed to get it replaced. I set an appointment for 6pm and I arrived 5 minutes early. I was told they were a little behind and that it would take 2 hours to put a new tire on. That was fine with me. Around 8:45 I call to check on my car and was told that it was not going to be done that night and that I would need to leave it over night. I could not do that as it is my sole vehicle. I was frustrated as I had made an appointment and that it should not take 3+ hours to put a new tire on a rim. I chose not to leave my car there and take my business elsewhere. I told the service manager, Edwin, that I was not happy and that I would be taking my business elsewhere. I let my frustrations be known to the manager and he proceeded to verbally assault me telling me to "F" off and to leave and that he didn't care. He is a young guy who has no place in customer service and shouldn't even be in a managerial position. As he was verbally assaulting me, I began recording for my protection and then he said he would no longer speak to me if I kept recording. He blamed his behavior on him being frustrated by the lack of staff to do the work. He blamed it on no one being able to pass a drug test. A manager should not take his own business problems out on the customer. It is not the customers fault for their lack of qualified personnel. My advice is to take your vehicle elsewhere if you need anything done to it. Shame on Pep Boys for hiring such abusive managers. I will never come back here again and will never recommend this place. read more

I scheduled an appointment at the Pep Boy Germantown location for noon. I arrived for my scheduled appointment, and they said that they were still waiting for my tires to arrive from another location. I was told that the tires would arrive by 3 pm and they would start on my car at that time. I left my car at the shop, and said I would call for updates. So I called at 4 pm to see if the tires had arrived yet, and I was told that the tires had arrived, but they still have not started working on my car due to short staffing. I finally received a call from them at 8 pm stating that my car was ready for pick up. 8 hours after my scheduled appointment, I finally had new tires. NEVER AGAIN! read more

Worst place ever ! Avoid at all costs possible. Came here to get my tire replaced and they told me they didn't have it. As they took off my tire and pumped air into it, they corroded my nozzle where you put air into. They didn't want to take responsibility and the young Hispanic male who claims to be the manager gave me attitude as I addressed the issue, walked away, & told me he couldn't do anything about it. Afterwards, their GM told me that they do in fact carry the tires for my car at their shop. Never again ! Today I had to wait in line for 45min just to drop my car off, even though I had made an appointment online. They said it'd take 1-3 hours. I call back 4 hours later to hear that they've lost the ticket and have no idea who I am, where my car is, or if it's even been worked on. I asked them to look for it, I have now been on hold for 40min and they haven't updated me on the status. It has been 4.5 hours since my appointment time, and my car still has not been worked on. I am a 70 year old woman who uses a power wheelchair and a handicapped equipped van. I made an appointment at noon to get a tire repaired. I expected it might have to be replaced. However, I was shocked to hear that all of my tires were bad. Was quoted a price of $800+. I could not afford that, so the gal I spoke with worked it down to $560+. Initially, I was told it would take about 1-1/2 hours. Then I was told 2 hours. It still wasn't ready, and a guy named Matthew told me another hour or two. At that point, I needed to get home to elevate my legs, as they were stiffening. I asked Matthew why it was taking 3 hours or more to put 4 tires on the car. He started arguing with me. Then the manager came out and said he put a second person on the van, and it would be done soon. I have been pleased with this place in the past. I still have doubts about whether I really needed 4 tires. I will probably not return. read more

I suspect they do not always perform the service you pay for. I had been taking to cars to them for oil changes. After running into problems with one of them after a service, I took them to an independent mechanic who said that based on the look of the oil and oil filter he guessed neither car had an oil change in at least 10,000 miles. ( I take them in every 3,000 and one of the cars I took to him right after an "oil change"). Also, last time I was there they told me my car would not start and needed a new battery. I told them not to replace it, and they said to let them know before I came so that they could jump start the car and have it running for me since it would not start otherwise. Sure enough when I got there the car was running, and waiting on me. Never had a problem with the car starting before or since even after a few months of driving it. Strongly advise to stay away from this location. read more

Walked in expecting to get a tire plugged, but turns out there were multiple holes. Scotty showed me the holes, and showed me the tires the dealership had put on where the wrong specs. He was patient as I did my own research [I don't trust salespeople], and confirmed that the tires were in fact wrong. They could only install the correct tires, so it was either all 4 or nothing. Walked in expecting to spend $100, walked out spending a few hundred. BUT Scotty and Dave worked with me and knocked down the final price a couple hundred dollars to make it more affordable. I had scheduled an appointment and arrived on time. I was promised to have my car ready in 30 minutes, but I had to wait 2 1/2 hours because they were working on a car that arrived after me. My most recent experience here was great. Particularly because of one employee Edwin. I don't expect this to happen all the time because I feel he went above and beyond what they employ employees do. A notification light went off in my car about a headlight being out so I decided to immediately bring my car in because I couldnt see what was going on. Initially I was notified there were some people ahead of me and they were closing soon so they may not be able to look at my car that night. But Edwin stepped in and just asked what was wrong. After a brief conversation he closed out the customers ahead of me and walked out with me to my car in the parking lot. The other employees were clearly trying to close waiting at the door to lock it behind us. I told Edwin if he couldnt look at my car today I'd just bring it in the next day but he insisted. In the parking lot Edwin diagnosed my car and found that one of the light bulbs just became loose and showed me how to replace it if I ever needed to. At that time Pep Boys was closed and he told me to have a nice night. I wanted to tip him but he just politely declined and went back inside. Need I say more? read more

I have been Pepboys customer since the early 1990s and this location is by far the WORST! I made an appointment online several days in advance for a brake service (third time within about 1 year for the same exact problem). My appointment was for 10:00am and I stated I would wait for my car. It is now 11:33am and my car is still outside in the parking lot. I asked why with an appointment it was taking so long and was told it should be in shortly, which was 20 minutes ago... If the original work was not done by Pepboys, I would NEVER come back to this location in Germantown, MD. The service advisor tried to state that a loud squealing is normal when braking in reverse due to weather. I know it is not. Otherwise it would have happened in the past. This has only been an issue since I had the brake work done at Pepboys. Never again. At this point, I am going to just take the loss and will make sure that I and everyone I know never uses Pepboys. read more

Without my consent they did a tire alignment even in the report they showed there is no change in the alignment. I have no idea why this shop only has 2.5 stars. The customer service and mechanic work is top notch to say the least. Scotty managed to fit me in on a day they were completely booked and was so friendly and attentive. Skip is one of the best mechanics I've met in a long time and gives it to you straight. I've had plenty of bad experiences with shops and I know Pep Boys doesn't have the best reputation but this Pep Boys is the exception! The store/parts side of Pepboys is great and that is the only reason this isn't a "1 star" and is elevated to a "2". The repair side is a disaster. A year ago I went for a repair to wobbly tires. They had no idea what they were doing, but the retail side manager (who is not part of repairs) came in and saved the day, made things right, so I decided now to give the repairs side another shot. Enter my second Pepboys tire nightmare. I ordered two new tires. Not only did they replace the wrong tires (they replaced the good tires, not the worn ones) so I had to come back a second time, but when I came back, they hadn't rotated the tires and the old tires were still up front (which is wrong and contrary to what I explicitly requested three times!). If that ain't enough all my tires were low on air! And I'm not done yet, my quoted price of $450 was now suddenly $750, which took about 30 minutes to get straightened out. It was a comedy of errors that had me tearing the hair from my head. Of course, the retail manager (I think Kumal is his name) saved the day once again. Thank you, Sir, but this time, I will NEVER go back to the repair side. It is my mission to discourage friends/family from going to Pepboys repairs. I gave them a second chance, and it was such as terrible disaster. They are incompetent, and although I was angry with their mistakes and not especially warm, they were snotty and rude back at me. I might go back to the retail side only because of the manager there (great guy), but I won't go back to the repair side, and I will only go to retail/parts when I really need it. In summary, do not go to the repair side! Others in line were equally unimpressed with Pepboys repair. read more

I had ordered tires to put on my 2000 Avalon XlS. Never had any problems with this car. It only had 164,000 miles. All I wanted is a front wheel alignment. Well, I drove to frederick the car started going to the left and started shaking. I called Pep boys, they indicated to bring it back on Sunday. Took the car back they indicated I needed Bith front Sway bar links, Strutes, Lower Ball Joints Arm, Rack and Pinion and Inner Outer Tie Rod Ends. So, the question is how did you do an alignment, if all this needed to be done? THEY looked stunned when I asked this question. How could you do the alignment? I took the car to a Toyota dealer mechanic. They indicated to me that the alignment was never done, also I had oil leak, transmission leak, power steering leak. Pep Boys apparently got pissed with me, because I called them out. And did something to my car. Although, my car was 21 yrs old, but was in excellent condition. I was pissed! This one is so seriously bad, I am skipping the jokes and commentary so that it is just the facts. Likewise, I am going to admit to my error by saying that I accidentally ordered the wrong tires when I set up the appointment. I set my appointment up on-line for an oil change and a new set of tires. After I dropped the car off, the store called to tell me of my error and offer a set of tires that would fit my car. Feeling sheepish, I authorized the work. Five stars right?!?! One star deduction - Tires and oil change took 5 hours! One star deduction - Tires went out of balance very quickly (1.5 weeks) One star deduction - Did not make an effort to fit me into THEIR very busy weekend schedule One star deduction - One tire deflated. After tow and repair, found out that the valve stem was not seated properly The purchase I made to save $100 has already cost me that same $100 and my tires are STILL not balanced! Matt was very attentive and patient, showing me the price and breaking it down with every detail, as well as giving me other prices to compare. There were no hidden fees whatsoever, and he didn't rush me in making my decision. Here I am 3 months later. I was offered a small amount of money to compensate me for my time and problem. At first I refused because I felt I had deserved more after all the crap I had been through with this place but ultimately I had accepted the money and Mandeep said he would contact me when I could come pick it up. He never contacted me and I never heard from anyone else. This pep boys location is the absolute worst and I would never recommend anyone to go here. Pitiful customer service. I have tried time and time again with this location. It seems like they just hire anybody to work on the cars because every time I take a vehicle there, they screw something else up. If I'm being honest I was completely wary about bringing my car here because I read the negative reviews online, however, Pep Boys was the only place open that my roadside service could tow to with the chance of me getting my car back tonight (my front tires blew out on the highway and I was completely screwed because I had to work early in the morning). Called to let them know my car was getting towed to them and the customer service was great, SHOUT OUT to Mo and Edwin, you both are wonderful, and whoever the service guy was that changed my tires at total last minute, thank you !!!!!!!
