This place is all around trash. It was extremely loud, the food was bland, and the service was mediocre My family of 4 and I showed up after a Hudson River cruise hoping for some good Italian food. We were seated moderately quickly but proceeded to wait no less than 40 minutes for our food to arrive. The waiter expressed a disregard for our time or appetites. I don't really get excited about Italian food but I'm a sucker for handmade pasta. Pepe Giallo is a great spot for simple, authentic, and affordable Italian food in Chelsea! The menu is set up in the classic Italian way, with primi (pastas) and secondi (larger entrees). This accommodates a wide range of appetites and budgets! The fettuccine with mushrooms in cream sauce ($17) is a beautiful dish: paper-thin homemade pasta, savory mushrooms, and a light cream sauce. Definitely check out the specials list as well. The atmosphere here is very pretty and hipster, with lots of exposed brick, plants, and light. A reservation wasn't necessary on a rainy weekday night, but it's a small space so it's worth calling ahead! read more

A very friendly and welcoming environment. Unaware of how reservations need to be made, we were able to secure a table thanks to the kind staff. The front of the restaurant is nicely decorated but the back of the restaurant is even nicer. The food selection is very tasty and unique. Yay! What a pleasant surprise. We have been saying we should try this place for a year now, and on a Tuesday night in August, we finally did. Very accommodating, even though almost every table was filled. Comfortable room. Somewhat brusque but competent service. We ordered: fried calamari/zucchini, margherita pizza, meatballs, greek salad, pasta with sausage and cream, and a side of spinach. Everything hit the spot, for the most part, although the pasta, which was springy in texture and perfectly cooked, did need salt and pepper to make it sing. The fact that the food was so reasonably priced probably made it taste even better. When we are craving Italian food in the neighborhood, we will be back! read more

Came here for dinner with the fiance and had a great meal. They take reservations via Yelp which is handy since it was a bit busy when we arrived. Host was friendly and got us seated promptly. Only negative would be the tables are a bit close together so you literally have to slide the tables toward one table to get out of the bench seating on the wall. Wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a place to have a private conversation, can definitely overhear everything at the neighboring tables. So gooooood. I ate the whole thing because I couldn't take a to good box with me, but mostly because I wanted to. I ordered the fettuccine norcina with sausage, parsley, and cream. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was together, and the meal came with an appetizer of bread and high quality olive oil. Their food was decent. Come for their happy hour and get their half carat of white wine that's probably most worth as it gives you a little bit more than 3 glasses of wine. The calarami and zucchini fries was just what you expected from other places...and same for the pastas (eggplant, spaghetti, chicken parm) they were all just typical. No complaints here but also not like wow. However service was great and we always had attention when needed and the place was cozy. read more

It does what it does very well. Comfortable cozy interior and very good food. The gnocchi gorgonzola was an excellent split to start, as was the pear and Gorgonzola salad. The chicken Milanese was the best I've had in some time. I'll go back, if just for the Milanese. read more

Very impressed with this beautiful, funky Italian joint with a super-friendly international staff, delicious food, and more than reasonable tabs. As soon as we walked in, we headed to the little garden area in the back. It was our little hideaway, at least until 6:30 or so when more Friday night diners started pouring in. You really feel like you might be somewhere outside New York...maybe the Italian countryside crossed with a Catskills farmhouse retreat. We made the mistake of ordering a full carafe of red wine and getting bombed within a few minutes of our arrival (which was surely a magnum carafe--it was HUGE). But not so bombed that we didn't enjoy our pasta--my gf the gnocchi and I the lobster/pasta special (that's right, a whole lobsta served alongside a healthy portion of house-made green linguine). It was messy the way lobster is, but very good. Were it not on the outskirts of Chelsea, I'd be a more frequent visitor. read more

4 stars is definitely on the money for this restaurant. It's a great place all around except that the portions are very small and expensive. They take reservations even on the weekends and during dinner time. When we arrived they had our table waiting and led us to the back of the restaurant. If you're going to dine here please ask for the back area it's beautiful. It's like a secret garden and you'll totally forget you're in NYC, great for date night. Otherwise the dining area in the front is plane jane and crowed. Do yourself a favor and get the half carafe of wine vs. a glass of wine (more wine for your buck), you're welcome. They bring out fresh bread, olive oil for dipping, and olives for the table. We got the baked eggplant appetizer. It had 4 slices of eggplant, cheese, and sauce. For my entree I had one of their specials which was a grilled octopus salad...aaamazing! Probably one of the tastiest grilled octopus dishes I've had. My bf had the veal scaloppine which was good (very small portion). One of my friends had the pappardelle and he said it was also good. The overall consensus of the food its that it was good but the portions are small especially for the price. The service was great, we were never rushed or constantly interrupted. In truth, we needed to use the loo after strolling the High Line and wandered into this adorable cafe. Then I saw octopus and a squid ink/lobster pasta on the menu, and I was happy. Deeelicious! We shared the two dishes and both were a hit with our crew. Their motto: no skim milk, no diet decaf, no Diet Coke. It just tells you everything you need to know. Bread is warm and the olive oil is well seasoned and delish. We had the calamari appetizer, this was not my favorite..but I've never been much of a calamari fan anyway. However, the sauce was great and for anyone that likes calamari would probably enjoy this a lot. I had the cod fish livernese, AMAZING! The fish was so flaky and the sauce packed in a ton of flavor..mouth is watering, just thinking about it. Was served with mashed potatoes, which were homemade-y tasting and delightful. Sauteed spinach was good too :) I sampled my friends entrees, one had the chicken milanese..the cutlet was perfectly fried and the salad on top was so good. My other friend had the pappardelle with sausage in tomato sauce, I pretty much finished her plate..the sauce was so good and the pasta cooked perfectly. For dessert..ah...flourless chocolate cake with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream. I pretty much attacked it, SO SO GOOD. We came here on a weekday evening as a party of three and were able to get a seat immediately. The food was a bit pricey for the portions but just about everything else left us quite satisfied. Pretty small restaurant and it was crowded...I didn't like how some of the tables were so close to each other. Got stuck with one of those tables...The couple sitting at the table next to me were literally just a feet away. They give you a basket of sliced bread with olive oil + olives on the side. We ordered 2 pasta dishes- penne vodka with pancetta & pappardelle with sausage in spicy tomato sauce (didn't taste much of the spice). We also ordered the chicken milanese with arugula & tomato. The penne vodka was just mediocre..I thought the bacon taste was pretty overpowering so I ended up adding some arugula from my other dish to my pasta. Thought it added a great flavor. The other 2 dishes were just okay, nothing special. Is it worth coming a 2nd time? Eh...not sure. As a 20 something year old this place is awesome in my book. Affordable, delicious, physically cute, expansive menu and good sized portions. I started with the pear salad which was fanatic and big enough to split between two people as an appetizer. I got the rigatoni with eggplant as a main which was tasty too but nothing super super special. the only miss in my book was the super limited drink menu. They had only one soda, and no decaf anything (coffee or tea). Obviously this isn't the end all be all and wouldn't prevent me from returning but as I went here with older relatives who like to catch up over a cup of decaf coffee after dinner it was a bit of a bummer in that regard. Not only is the pasta fresh and the sauce all homemade it is so affordable you assume everything is coming out in bite-size portions... But they're normal size! Came here on a Saturday night for a birthday celebration dinner with my boyfriend and his family. We were seated in the garden area, and wow does the mood change. It's definitely louder in the front, so if you're coming for a dinner date, try to snatch a table in the back! And there were a good amount of people waiting for tables so a reservation is recommended. I had the pappardelle with spicy tomato sauce. Pasta is fresh, the spicy was a bit too strong for me towards the end but overall deserves a 4/5. I was especially wowed by the rigatoni with salmon and mushroom in cream sauce. I had a bite of that and almost wished I had ordered that instead. Friendly and quick service. Waiter was able to help us decide on a wine selection. Ever since I discovered Pepe Rosso I've been hankering to try out all of their venues... Pepe Verde kept me going for years but then it closed recently (RIP pouring a carafe out for my love of it) and I kept saying "I gotta go try out Pepe Giallo" as it also looked like their most restaurant-y restaurant. Welp, finally got to do that last night and what can I say, it's just as good as all of the other locations and I'm already in tears over the fact that I don't live around the corner so I can go here every night. What a great hometown kind of restaurant, with a decor that provides all of the comforts of that weird italian guy on the corner who you can't tell if he's yelling at you or the voices in his head. The food is fantastic-- just like the other locations, the simplest of things here taste like nirvana and the portions are generous and the prices even more so for the quality. Love love love this damn place. As a native New Yorker I feel like this is one of the few places around that still feels like a real, authentic New York restaurant-- in that all of the food tastes like it's directly from Italy and if that's not enough for you then get out because you're in the wrong city. read more

The wait for 6 people was only around 15 minutes without a reservation. We were seated quickly. Save your appetite for the main entree because the complimentary bread they give you right off is hard and bland! I ordered the Rigatoni w/ Salmon in cream sauce and it was quite delicious! The rigatoni was very al dente and I had a great portion of salmon. Had a glass of red wine that was amazing as well (I don't recall the name of it, but it was highlighted as a favorite on the menu).
