When I lived in NYC and Chelsea, Pepe Giallo was where I always took my mother whenever she came up to visit me. We absolutely adored this place. It's a cute little place in Chelsea, and whenever we came for lunch it was always empty and we were seated immediately. The margarita pizza is my favorite, as well as the spicy tomato pasta. I almost always used to order the margarita pizza though, it's divine. Service was always good and quick. We stuck to the same dishes every time, so can't vouch for any of their other food. I came with a fairly large group of people around 9. They sat us pretty quickly since we didn't make reservation or anything. The food was great we order a pizza and 1 pasta each. Not going to review what my friends order (all I have to say is they loved it) I order a pappardelle sausage In spicy tomato sauce, the was delicious especially with a hint of spiciness. The portion was enough not to big but not to small. At last we share their nutella tiramisu highly recommend. When you think about nutella the first thing that comes to your mind is how sweet this dessert going to be, but this dessert is totally different. Not to sweet but enough to satisfied your sweet tooth. The service was alright would say great but wouldn't say bad either. Everything was great but when we got the check we realize service charge was added already. Since we 're splitting the check we need to know exactly how much each person is paying. After visiting Quality Italian last time I was in NYC, I was trying to not let my expectations get the better of me. My friend Callie and I haven't been to this place so we thought we'd try this place out. It's not a very small place, but not large either. It was a hot has day out so they kept turning on and off the AC so our experience in the place went from muggy and humid to cold. The place is nicely and minimally decorated with a decent bar in the middle even though I'm not sure if anyone actually say there given its side and location in the middle of the restaurant. We started off with the fried calamari aha zucchini which is definitely one of the best ones I've had! Top 5. Next we shared the chicken Milanese and penne vodka with Pancetta. Both were delicious but the pasta was my favorite! It was creamy and had a great amount of Pancetta. We were stuffed at the end and couldn't finish our appetizer and full carafe of wine (3 very generous glasses each)! Definitely would come back and make it to desert. read more

It's looks like a small restaurant from the outside but actually has a lot of seating and a cute patio. I think the bread and olive oil wasn't anything super special. The pasta I got was a fettuccine with mushrooms and truffle oil. The pasta was fresh but I just didn't think the flavors were very strong. So overall a decent meal but not amazing. The menu is large and I would recommend getting the side of garlic bread as that is a good addition to anything ordered off the menu. I wandered in with two friends on a Tuesday night, and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff! The restaurant was filling up quickly (it was almost 8:30 pm) but we managed to get a table. My friend and I ordered Chicken Parmigiana as well as the Chicken Alfredo. They have different types of chicken dishes so you can choose like a Pesto or Alfredo. When our food arrived, our expectations continued to be exceeded. By the end of the meal we were planning our next visit. Don't let appearances fool you--the decor may be divey, but the wines as well as the vast amount of sides on the menu are fantastic. Waitress and another waiter or manager were downright rude. Food was hit and miss. Greek salad, meatballs and apps were great. One-star because of the horrible service from supervisor Ricarte (I think that's his name. To be fair our waiter was nice). He is highly unprofessional with poor relationship management skill. Lack of transparency on cutting fees and blamed us when they were the ones who didn't clarify things upfront. After we resolved the issue, we gave him 4 credit cards (the max the restaurant allows) because we had a large group. Not only he double charged one of the credit cards, but also he forgot to return one. The food is mediocre. I'd give it a 3-star. I had the rigatoni with salmon and cream sauce (added mushroom for $3). It was pretty bland. The fried calamari and zucchini was ok. I like how they put pepper flakes in the dipping sauce which added a nice kick to it but that's pretty much it. read more

This was our second time eating here. The first time was lovely. We were part of a large group at one of the big long tables in the back. Based on that experience I recommended to my friend that she book her big gathering at Pepe Giallo. My friends got there early, hoping for a drink at the bar. They did not know there is no bar to sit at. Two staff members spoke very rudely to them, telling them to stand outside until our reservation. We were seated 10 minutes late. At the dinner's end, after we had paid, and at only 10pm on a Friday night, our waitress came to our table and brusquely said "We're closed." We were quite surprised, as this was the first we heard this odd information (who closes in NYC on a Friday nite at 10pm?) So we casually finished our deserts and wine and lingered a bit. 10 minutes later she came back and rudely asked all 13 of us to leave. The food is good. The room is great. The staff's behavior is unconscionable. I hope management takes note. We certainly won't be returning. read more

Booked this for our best friend's birthday. We really wanted to love it because of the ambiance it seemed to give off and the food we saw online. I will say that the girls that helped us during the reservation process were super helpful and attentive so this review does not reflect them at all. Where do I start? We were a party of 16- I asked if I could come earlier to set some decorations on the table and they agreed. Upon arrival, not only was I visibly carrying big bags with decorations but we also had a huge cake box. The host was absolutely terrible and rude. I had to approach him to tell him about our reservation to which he said "Let me see if it's ready"-mind you we were there exactly on time. He didn't even offer to have someone take the cake. Then he proceeded to tell our server to take us to the back garden- he absolutely seemed swamped and should have had more help. when we get to the back the table was still missing 3 chairs and two settings. Again, I was offered no help with the cake so I had to ask our guy to please take it. Our party was a bit late due to traffic but once everyone got there it seemed like everything was coming out very slow. Our server obviously needed more support as he had other large parties to handle. As someone thats been in the service industry I was so upset to see that their manager wasn't offering any sort of help. The food was okay, nothing crazy, but the time each thing took to come out was ridiculous. I think our server was trying to be funny or something but it really did come off as rude, mean, and annoyed. we saw him offer to take a photo of the party behind us and he never once offered us. At the end of the night we were trying to get our photos in to which his comment was, "your beautiful but we're closing and you need to leave" WHAT! I totally get the closing part but I feel that comment came off so unprofessional. I don't want to think this was a racial situation but I will say that the all white party behind us seemed to be very well taken care of. overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to larger parties unless they want to feel neglected and mistreated for some decent food. read more

We were searching for a restaurant to have a quick dinner after Sleep No More and found this gem. Cozy ambience with excellent food- we ordered fried calamari and zucchini, fettuccine norcina, Bronzino with lentil, and two desserts (flourless chocolate cake with ice cream and Nutella tiramisu). We loved every dish! Main courses were large portions; we ended up packing up the leftover which we finished later as a late night snack. No surprise it's popular: try finding affordable Italian food anywhere in Manhattan, let alone in artsy Chelsea. And the food didn't disappoint. In keeping with the homey, comfort vibe, I got the penne vodka, which everyone seems to recommend. It's pretty darn good. Maybe it could've used more flavor, but the portion is ample as it should be and quite satisfying. I'm a huge fan of mushrooms, and the couple next to us got the sauteed mushrooms as a starter, which I had the misfortune of getting a heady whiff of just as we were walking out. Lovedddd this place! I was hesitant on whether the food would be good, thinking it was another tourist trap near the high line. I was so wrong for thinking that! Cute ambiance, and attentive service. We started with the buffalo mozzarella - the cheese was so soft and creamy. Wish there were more tomatoes on the plate, nonetheless it was still great. Next, we ordered the penne vodka with pancetta as I saw other reviews reallyy enjoyed it. Wow we're they right. The pasta was cooked perfect al dente and the tomato sauce was the perfect amount of creamy. I LOVED it and would definitely come back for that again. Next, the chicken Parmesan dish which I also really enjoyed. The chicken wasn't overly fried or oily which I find to be the case a lot of times with this dish, but not here! Perfect amount of cheese on top, not too much. The sautéed garlic spinach as the side was so great. Definitely recommend that dish as well, or even just the spinach as a side! Decided I wanted some Italian food and found this place. I wasn't looking for a scene, so the rustic feel of the restaurant enticed me. The prices were very good and the menu had quite a few options that I wanted to try. I had every intention on getting pasta but went with the trout instead. So glad I did because it was delicious. The service was great, which is very important to me, and the wine selection was typical of a restaurant of that style. Just tried Pepe Giallo for the first time last night with a few coworkers + they've definitely found a repeat customer in me. Cozy ambiance that isn't too try-hard, diverse menu options, and a great wine list. Towards the end of our meal, I'd asked the wait staff (who was super attentive to us throughout) to wrap the remainder of my plate to go -- there was a miscommunication resulting in them disposing of my food, but when I asked them about it on my way out, they notified me of the mishap + sent me home with a fresh plate of what I ordered (highly recommend the gnocchi with short rib ragu.) The wait for an inside table was quite long, so we were seated outside immediately on a charming Chelsea avenue where the restaurant is located. The exterior of the building is quite cute and mimics an Italian veranda because of its plants and striped shade sail. Despite being set up on an oddly long table where we felt like we were a mile away from one another, the food was delicious and definitely hit the spot---especially when craving something rich. Coming hungry from work, we ordered Fettucine Norcina (sausage, parsley, and cream) and Rigatoni with salmon and cream. The portions were generous and they even brought us a tub of Parmesan cheese to add at our own pace, which was much needed knowing us! Really mediocre Italian, although prices weren't terrible. I had the seafood special which was pretty much a pile of soggy fettuccine on top of sloppily dumped calamari/mussels/overcooked lobster. It was reminiscent of leftovers in a kitchen garbage disposal. My boyfriend's sausage pappardelle was certainly better but not anything special. A waiter spilled some of the seafood pasta on my boyfriend's jacket when bringing the dish to our table, and didn't even have the graciousness to tell us. He just came back and started scrubbing frantically on the jacket - I noticed since I was sitting across from the scene.
