Truly a solid 4 star... great ambiance, fantastic vibe, fabulous waitstaff and solid limited menu... pizza's are excellent choices but my pizza needed an extra 3 minutes in the oven, a bit doughy but great taste. We had veal, chicken, and homemade pappardelle with spicy sausage all great just needed better side dishes broccoli a-bit undercooked and mashed potatoes very cold. Limited wines, but had a bottle of valpolicella that was fair but the large carafe of house red was delicious at half the price. Definitely recommend this restaurant and will be going back. Every time I go to NYC--I always always have a food itinerary. This is the one place that I did NOT have on my radar and we really stumbled upon it because we were trying to escape the wind and this was the closest restaurant. I'm not sure if that mood set the precedent of my experience here. My favorite aspect of this restaurant was the ambiance--it was warm and inviting, and cozy inside. That is really my most rewarding memory here--the great time I had. The food was solid, they have your standard Italian options at reasonable price points but nothing to write home about. We ordered the fried calamari and zucchini, spaghetti bolognese, and the penne vodka. They give you a jar of Parmesan to sprinkle to your hearts content. Multiple people of all ages were there: a family with two young kids, older couples having dinner, young friends getting together. We went at 5:30 pm on a Saturday night and the restaurant filled up quite quickly so try to make a reservation before arriving. We ordered the Margherita Pizza, Ravioli del Giotto with Pesto (Special), and Pear Salad. The portions are perfect. Excellent pasta and Italian desserts in an elegant yet laid-back environment. I ordered the Lasagna, which was covered in beef ragu and topped with a layer of melted mozzarella. This was good, but I personally would've preferred more cheese (like between the lasagna layers rather than just on top). Also, the beef ragu was very tomato-forward, which isn't inherently bad, but I would've liked a bit more beef. I also tried the Pappardelle, which was covered in a sausage and tomato sauce. The sauce was a bit spicy but not too much. The pasta was fresh and chewy (in a good way). For dessert, we ordered the Nutella Tiramisu and the Torta Di Pera. The tiramisu was both fluffy and creamy with a nice coffee flavor. The Torta Di Pera was like a pear pie slice, except with a pastry kind of crust. I had personally not seen this dessert before, so it was quite unique and very tasty. Each pasta dish was $19 and each dessert was $9, which I suppose is about what you'd expect from a nice Italian restaurant in Chelsea. The restaurant itself has a peaceful, clean, open kind of atmosphere with elegant decor and a decent amount of seating, both indoors and outdoors. We came on a Sunday night and there were only a couple other parties dining in. The staff were friendly and the service speed was pretty quick. Overall, I would give Pepe Giallo 4.5 stars if I could for the atmosphere and food, and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for Italian food in the Chelsea area. read more

It's a small restaurant with small tables but has both indoor and covered outdoor dining. Enjoyed the calamari as it was very light and came with zucchini, which was a nice touch. Finally returned after 4 years, and so much has changed! The menu is similar, from what I remember, but the space is significantly different - so much roomier and prettier! There are fairy lights strewn throughout the interior, and each table has a very cute decorated paper bag enclosing a lit candle. It's super romantic! Once you're seated, you're offered bread with olive oil, and bottled tap water. The olive oil is so delicious and fragrant, and comes with actual pitted olives. It's fruity and fresh, and I couldn't stop myself from dipping the bread so that it sops up the oil. Both my friend and I decided to order from the special menu that day. She got the ravioli with tomato and basil, whereas I opted for the monkfish with grilled calamari, olive sauce, and sauteed kale / mashed potatoes (I substituted the potatoes with sauteed spinach). She loved her choice, while I cleaned off my plate completely! The monkfish, grilled in olive oil, was perfectly moist and rich. The grilled calamari was a bit more disappointing; it was a little tough and not as tender. The olive sauce was made of chopped, minced olives, and was super fatty - particularly when coupled with the olive oil. Overall, the dish had way too much olive oil - there was a ton used to cook the vegetables and meat - (too much of a good thing, how ironic!), but the addition of some lemon juice helped tremendously. We also chose to share a dessert, and debated between the nutella tiramisu and flourless chocolate cake. I ultimately suggested the flourless cake with ice cream, as I wasn't in the mood for a creamier dessert. The slice of cake that arrived was huge, more than enough for two people. I'm glad we got a scoop of ice cream, as it helped balance the richness of the cake with its temperature and lower sweetness level. The cake was so moist! It was quite dense but delightfully chocolatey and rich. Pepe Giallo is an affordable spot for classic Italian - it's great for smaller groups (i.e., dates and friend get-togethers). The server told me I could not sit there to make space for the other customers (btw there were no other customers). We asked the server if we could receive anything for her birthday, and the server proceeded to just explain the dessert menu. We decided to ask the manager if she would receive a free dessert for her birthday and he said yes. We ordered the tiramisu. When the check came, we were told that we had to pay for the tiramisu.
