We popped into this restaurant because my husband had been to it before. He said that the service left a lot to be desired, but I said let's give it a shot anyway. I wish I hadn't, honestly. We walk in, and it was busy. A guy named comes over and asks us if we have a reservation or not and then seats us. Then our waiter John comes over, and I ordered sparkling water. Then he heads off to help other tables for a bit. Someone brings the water over to us. Then we wait for a little while to order. Not too long, but long enough to notice. Then he comes over and takes our order. We both just ordered a plate of pasta as we weren't too hungry. Before it gets dropped off, I have to flag someone down from across the room to order a couple of double espressos. I ordered the fettuccine with mushroom in cream sauce and truffle oil. And he ordered the penne meatballs in spicy tomato sauce. Both were delicious. But no one came over to pre-bus our table, so I had too many dishes on the table from the espresso and empty water glasses that I found it difficult to eat my pasta. When someone finally came by, I asked for boxes because I was done eating. (after about four bites because I was getting distraught) and I wanted dessert. So I asked our waiter for the Tartufo affogato, not the normal affogato. Two completely different things. When the girl brought it over, I looked at it, and I was immediately annoyed. Because of all of the frustrations that we were going through, this was just a straightforward thing. It was the normal affogato. First, I waited to see if anyone would notice that I wasn't touching my dessert. Then I got up and went over to John and told him that I wasn't trying to be annoying, but they gave me the wrong dessert. He came over to check it out. Then left the wrong dessert on the table so we could stare at it while we waited for the right one to come out of the kitchen. When it came out about 10 minutes later, they took the first dessert away. I was distraught because there were people just standing around that could have helped if the server needed assistance. The manager should have checked on us since there were so many issues with our table. It was beyond frustrating. I wasn't looking for anything for free. I was just saddened because the food was pretty good. Too bad the service wasn't. I will do take out from here. But I refuse to dine in and go through this type of service again. Inexpensive place to go if you are in the area. There is a small outdoor seating area, and the restaurant was crowded at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night. The spicy penne meatballs had just the right amount of spice, and the meatballs were great. Portion size and price are positives of this establishment, and if you're in the neighborhood, it's a good place for a casual dinner with good service. I recommend!!!! read more

As soon as we walked in we were greeted, seated, drink order taken, and bread on the table. Can't beat that service. I'm not one to care about the atmosphere too much, but the wife loved it. But let's get to the gem of the meal.... the pasta is some of the best we have ever had. Made in-house and absolutely delicious. This place has a very quaint, lovely ambiance. I was here with a friend and we were led to the back area of the long restaurant where there's a covered area with heat and cute decor all around. Despite being so intimately close to the table next to us, the food was very delicious and came out in a very timely manner. However, I did think that the service could have been a little more hands on in terms of checking in on myself and my guest. I got the fettuccine with mushrooms and grilled chicken in a cream (alfredo?) sauce and I would give it it 3.5/5 stars because I thought that the pasta was overcooked and too soft - definitely was not al dente. However, the richness of the sauce and the quality of the chicken and mushrooms made up for the rest of the dish. I'm not sure I would go so far as to say this was my favorite Italian restaurant in Manhattan, but for now for Chelsea, it may be my new favorite place. read more

Food was pretty good (we had one pizza & one pasta dish), but the service was abysmal. My partner and I each ordered a drink with the food order. The food came out rather quickly (10-15 mins) but the drinks still had not come out. We figured maybe the bar was backed up, but by the time we saw the waitress again (outside seating) we were more than halfway done with our food. We told her we never got our drinks and they could just cancel them (one was an aperitif) since it was so late in the meal and instead of apologizing, her response was "what did you have?" and then she walked off. She later brought the check and still didn't apologize for the mistake. Then we had to hunt her down for a pen after she brought the receipt without one. There are so many better Italian restaurants in the city that better prioritize good service. We will not be returning here as a result. read more

It's been awhile since I've been to Pepe Giallo, and my first time at their new location. It's a really great spot to grab a nice, casual dinner with a friend, which is exactly what I did. I end up here, as I was trying to find an Italian restaurant, with a bit of not so traditional feel for my friend's birthday. Yelp really helped seal the deal, and book my reservation. It's very quaint. It's not a huge space, but you definitely don't feel like you're crowded in or on top of other tables. And, my friend was absolutely loving it from the moment we walked in. It's a very relaxed ambiance, without the Chelsea attitude, which was quite refreshing. And, it was reasonably priced, another thing often hard to find in the 'hood. We ordered a couple of appetizers. The fried calamari and zucchini was perfect. Exactly what we were craving. The bruschetta was pretty good. I went with the Ceasar salad with chicken. He had the pasta. The only thing that disappointed me a bit, well a lot, was the service. First, it's extremely annoying when waiters are overly obvious that they are less than thrilled that you're not ordering alcohol. Frankly, I usually tip extremely well when the service isn't affected by being a non-alcoholic drinker. It irritates the heck out of me when you have to continually chase down the waiter for things that he 1) should have asked about when the food got delivered, like parmesan cheese, or more of the non-alcoholic drink. And 2) it's irritating when you see your server check on other tables and how things are, but he hasn't once stopped by yours in 30 minutes and you've had to flag down (well, actually get up and physically go over to the back bar area where they make things) to ask another server or employee for something or to find your waiter. In a place that small, there just is no excuse. read more

UPDATE: Another lunch review, still haven't made it to this place for dinner. They changed things quite a bit, post-pandemic. For instance, they now have a significant outdoor space, part of which is covered. We enjoyed their Greek salad, the veal special, and a couple of Peronis. Finishing the meal with espressos, of course. We went for lunch, so I can't speak to the dinner offerings, but it was most definitely worth it. If it's the right season, try to get a table in the back garden, it's lovely. Their lunch specials are very reasonably priced and a good value, but their main menu is also full of good choices. They make a point of not having sodas or decaf coffee, good for them! read more

First of all, they have extremely reasonable prices for NYC and the Chelsea area. The atmosphere is also super cute and the service is excellent. I came with 6 other girls and between us all we ordered a good majority of the menu. All of us got different pastas and no one had any complaints. Pepe is a quaint, cozy Chelsea restaurant, that ticks all the aforementioned attributes of a Chelsea/West Village restaurant in an old building. I came here over the weekend during a dinner rush and as luck would have it, we didn't have to wait. We got a table in the back behind the kitchen and main dining room that had about a dozen small tables in it. It was kind of like being on an enclosed back porch, but still with all the quaint and cozy bits. I liked the room as it was a bit less noisy than the main room. 3 of us ordered pizzas and 2 got fish dishes. I did not eat the fish, I had a pizza. 3 of us got margherita pizzas. We felt they were very average at best. They were ok, not bad, but not anything special. The service was good. I had the salmon with cream sauce and added mushrooms. The salmon was plentiful, pasta cooked appropriately. However, it's all about the sauce and I thought theirs was on the bland side. Nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't cure. He had the penne and meatballs. He LOVED it. Said that their tomato sauce was authentic Italian and fantastic. His pasta was cooked perfectly. I liked his dish better than mine. They have complimentary bread, which was right on time when I arrived because I was starving and it was perfection. Simple, but freshly baked.
