Edit: I finally got something other than the flat steak & pesto and i didn't like it. I ordered the beef heart skewers with peruvian corn & potatoes and the heart tasted of iron, the potatoes were under seasoned and the Peruvian corn aka hominy was just weird. read more

I've been craving ceviche and finally found a place in houston! Amazing mixed seafood ceviche. It has a strong limey taste which I really really liked and the crunchy pieces of corn were amazing for texture. I wasn't a big fan of the red sauce that they gave on the side, wasn't spicy enough for me. I'd definitely stick with the green sauce. I wish I could give them "0" star rating. I went on Sunday with a friend and we both had one single queso empanada. My friend as well as myself brought our kids with us, my friends kid is 6 y/o and mine is 18 months. Not to make a long story, after we left my daughter began to feel sick, it wasn't until Monday when my child started to throw up, she was vomiting every other feed. Then on Tuesday I began to vomit and feel really bad.... then again, I wasn't sure what caused it. It's Saturday and I'm talking to that friend who also when I and had the empanadas with me; she's telling me she had the same exact story happened to her and her kid. Not to mention all of this, our husbands got stomach viruses as well. I really hope it was a matter of food poisoning ( personals reaction to something the empanadas were cooked with ) but it's much of a confidence that my friend's family and mine got all sick from eating from here. When I want consistent, dependable good food, Peru Cafe Express never fails to deliver. it's located in an awkward location alongside the 59 Freeway, but the trek is always worth it. I think Peruvian cuisine is criminally underrated. It takes some of the best aspects of Mexican and Chinese food and makes it into its own thing. Take the Lomo Saltado: the steak is perfectly marinated and stir-fried with french fries, tomatoes, soy sauce, and red onions. The soy sauce and stir-fry technique give the dish a wonderful fragrance, while the steak is always so wonderfully tender, reminding me of the best carne asada. Order the Lomo Saltado here if you haven't tried it before - it's a good entry into the wonderful world of Peruvian cuisine. I've been here a couple of times, and although I usually get a Saltado dish, I opted for the chicken with huancaina sauce made from Peruvian yellow peppers. The dish is visually overwhelming when it comes out, like curry but a brighter yellow. The dish is a little bland in terms of flavor (I'm not sure if I got the full aroma of the yellow pepper) but it is very hearty and filling. Sometimes, the Saltado dishes can be super salty or not salty enough, but the dish is still good because of the quality beef / chicken. That's where a star gets detracted. But this is definitely a quality place, and I can't wait to come back to try the cerviche. read more

However I never had Peruvian food before so whenever I wanted to go out to eat I never chose the Peru cafe. Big mistake. Finally went there last night and I wish I went sooner. Small restaurant in a strip mall. Very clean inside and service was very friendly. Refills were provided promptly. We ordered the beef empanada, lomo saltado (beef strips with grilled onions, tomatoes, rice and French fries) and the Jalea (seafood platter - fish, calamari, shrimp, mussels). Everything was delicious. The beef empanada was lightly fried and the shell was very light and crisp. The filling was slightly sweet. Fantastic and unexpected. The seafood platter was the absolute star. The seafood was cooked to perfection and the batter was not too heavy. It was served with lime and we were able to get additional lime by request. My only complaint would be that some might find that the food could use a little salt. I just added a little to taste and was very pleased. You can always add salt but you sure cannot unsalt a dish! Beef was tender in the lomo saltdo. We will be back! read more

I came here with much excitement as it was my first time trying Peruvian food. The place had many filled tables and I was ready to experience some nice bold flavors. Looks (pictures) were deceiving. The plates are very photogenic, but presentation does not make up for lack of taste. I'm sad to say I was very disappointed in the flavor profiles. The tastes needed to be developed more because though the idea was there, the flavors were nuanced. So for those of us ready for a blast of flavors in our mouths, we were extremely let down. Furthermore, the limes provide with the empanadas were dry. When we asked for more with our entrees, we finally got them at the end of our meal with the ketchup for our last two fries left. The yucca side was extremely dry and hard to eat. Salt was lacking in all items. The green salsa that came with the empanadas was watered down. The grilled chicken was moist but very thin and did not feel like I was getting much food for my money. The beef was cooked well but needed salt. The staff was very polite and friendly, however, their service lacked speed and accuracy. Overall was an okay experience but not a place I would return too. read more

Finding this place in Houston is exciting for me because I can get a taste of Lima! GROSS!!! This is not authentic Peruvian food. Everything lacked simple salt and pepper and the sauces weren't flavored with the basics of any Latin American cuisine..garlic, cilantro etc. I had the Pollo Saltado, there were more fries than chicken in it and the overall dish was just bland.
