Hair in my ceviche... and the waitress didn't remove it from my bill until I complained... disgusting!!!

First of all I have to say I'm Peruvian and I know when the food is good and stays true to the Peruvian flavor and style. Causa de Pollo (Causa chicken) - the potato was not done correctly at all, and there was almost no chicken, this dish is supposed to have a decent amount of chicken inside the potato and it had nothing it was all potato. Ceviche Mixto - the Peruvian ceviche I consider the best ceviche worldwide, once you try it you'll know why. In this particular restaurant it was ok, the seafood is not fresh more like it had been frozen but the flavor overall was good. Chaufa de Carne (Fried Rice with beef) - this was good and it is a LOT of fried rice, I finished it in 3 separate meals the next day. This is a really good amount for only $8. Chicha Morada - this purple corn drink is my favorite, I liked it here because it wasn't too sweet like in other restaurants I've found. the chicha was good! read more

My husband and I moved from SoCal to houston back in 2016. My husband and I had a favorite Peruvian restaurant we frequented often in Huntington Beach. So we were on a hunt once we moved to H-Town. This place is SO good. The empanadas are amazing. I could eat a jar of their tomatillo sauce.

Finding a Peruvian spot near my apartment was a real treat. Peru Cafe Express is mainly take-out, but you can order online. They are quick and reasonably affordable. The Lomo and aji pollo are great. Stopped in for lunch and was glad we did. The spot is small, so only a few tables and they are packed in there, but the vibe of the place was pleasant, so it felt more like community not sardines. The staff was very patient and helpful as I took a first timer to Peruvian food with me. I landed on the grilled steak with fries and plantains. The food was very good. Steak was seasoned and cooked well. The fries were meaty and crispy, nice job. My only ask for next time, and this is a personal preference, is to caramelize the plantains more, I like them crispy on the outside. Though they were very flavorful and I ate them happily. I love this place! The place is small but the service is excellent and the food even better. My favorite is the Lomo Saltado (steak with wine sauce, sautéed red onions, French fries and white rice) but the fried seafood platter is just as delicious. I'd say the food is pretty authentic for a taste of South American food. read more

Left a review on Google, but a friend told me it's better to use Yelp. My wife is from Peru, and she loves this restaurant. She asks me to bring alfajores (something between cookie and candy) when I work close to there. It's doing much better business in the (fairly) new location, with more table space. read more

I started with an Inca Kola which tastes like Hubba Bubba! First out were the empanadas. One chicken and one beef. Very tasty, though I preferred the beef as it had more flavor complexity. For lunch it was Lomo Saltado and mixed ceviche. The ceviche was well prepared but the juice was very sour and overwhelmed the dish toward the end. The Lomo Saltado was my favorite. I would recommend mixing the soy sauce in with the rice as you get soggy salty rice at the end otherwise. The vegetables in the Lomo Saltado were excellent. The restaurant is very small. Not good for groups at all. You could potentially get 4 people together, but you might have to wait. Service was fast and food came out quickly. Waitstaff was attentive without hovering or being obnoxious. read more

This is a new Peruvian place that opened up near Greenway and its not bad. Their lomo saltado is pretty good and so is their chicken and cilantro soup, but their rotisserie chicken needs some work. Their chicha morada (purple corn drink) was pretty good and had good flavor. I've been to multiple Peruvian restaurants here and in Miami so I know good from bad. This place falls in the middle and its pretty quick and good service from nice people. read more

Really friendly service. Delicious beefsteak, especially with ground Parmesan. Very good basil cream pasta. The appetizer potatoes were good, similar to au gratin potatoes, but it was odd that the dish was not served hot. Tried a traditional Peruvian beverage called a Chicha Morada made from purple corn, pineapple and other fruit. Pretty good! Tasted like a mixture of a not-too-sweet fruit punch with either cinnamon or ginger. A bit like a tropical, fruitier version of the non-alcoholic wassail they have at Dickens on the Strand in Galveston. Only about 12 or so stools to sit on, so it's better for take out. (Uses non-recyclable Styrofoam cups/containers. ) Very tasty. Not overpriced. Will definitely go back. read more

Solid 4 stars! It's a tiny place, only 4 two-person tables (hence, the "express" name). My aunt and uncle worked in Peru for a few years and say this is definitely authentic. I personally have no idea, but I like it! Apps: Fried yucca is a weakness and they do it well! Try it with the huancaina sauce!! The beef empanada is different than the more familiar TexMex style. I actually prefer the Peruvian version. The sweet and savory work great together. Mains: Aji de Gallina is unusual, but also delicious. The sauce is rich and creamy. Lomo Saltado reminds me of stir-fry beef. Actually, Peru has a heavy Asian influence so their food is quite different from other Latin American cuisines. They have a number of dishes similar to stir-fry and fried rice. I love that this place serves Inca Cola- it's the coke of Peru. Try it! Kind of like coke mixed with cream soda. My only comment for improvement is the counter worker could use some assistance as she was trying to take to-go orders, help wait on customers that were dinning in, and also be the cashier for those trying to leave. read more

I ordered for a carry out and it was my first time. Now I had original Peruvian food, and is hard to find Ají de Gallina... and i want to say this place hit the spot ! Came in for the beef fried rice, but ended up ordering the lomo saltado after the cashier recommended it. It was pretty disappointing for me, the beef is just too dry. Tried the seafood fried rice and also the seafood rice (they're 2 different things) - the fried rice is just OK, but the rice is good, just like a paella basically. Portion is reasonable for the price. My friend also raved about the alfajores that she got, although I'm not a big fan of those. Very limited seating, so you may have to end up with a to go order. read more

I was really expecting a little more from here. First I was dissapointed that they didn't have any rotisserie chicken. The chicken saltado was ok and lacked a bit in flavor. I will give it another try just to see if there is something else on the menu that more for me. read more

food was horrible the ceviche the fish was massive sizes and there's no way the lemon can cook the fish so you're eating 100% raw fish not like a regular ceviche which the lemon cooks the fish, when I told dad to the cashier the blonde lady she looked at me and she told me that she will not remove it I did not mention to her to remove it from the bill anyways I paid for it they didn't apologize and I will never come back read more

I never thought I would find Authentic Peruvian ceviche in leche de tigere ($13) in Houston, but here it is!!! Lomo saltado ($12) was tender and flavorful. We had the causa, appetizer -its a potato/chicken salad mini stack but very flavorful. The place is a hole-in-the-wall spot with only 7 tables but VERY clean.The price was very good for the quality and quantiry of food. Its tucked in the Mattress Firm shopping center, nice and hidden. Service was friendly and fast. Do not bring a big group, these tables are 2 seaters. Delicious overall. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Peru Cafe Express is an unassuming Peruvian restaurant near Greenway Plaza, which boasts some of the best food in Houston. My go-to is a Peruvian "chicha morada" and a plate of camarones saltados, with a coffee to top it off. The staff are friendly and quick, and they always give me a great excuse to practice my Spanish. My one tip is that this place fills up quickly, especially on the weekends, so come early! read more
