I like having a pet store nearby so you can get dog food and treats in a pinch. I wish they carried the food that I need though I haven't tried asking for them to order for me. They do carry the flea meds that I use so I've purchased from this store several times. TLDR: Great place to buy dog food. When it come to buying dog food, Pet Club is my go-to spot! After the South San Francisco location closed, I was pretty bummed bc it was just 5 minutes from the house, but the money I save on dog food is worth the drive out to San Mateo. Mila is a picky eater. I love costco more than anybody, but Mila is not a fan of the kirkland brand dog food, so pet food club was the next best place for me to look since I know the big pet stores tend to be on the pricier side. After doing some soft online research, I decided to go with the Taste of the Wild brand of dry food. It had good ratings and Mila absolutely loves it. They have about 4-6 different flavors and they sell them in smaller bags and up to 28lbs. The best deal is the 28lb bag for $42.99. It used to be $39.99 but i'm guessing supply chain issues is forcing the price up, but still it's a better price than you'll find elsewhere. I think online and at the other pet stores its $51.99 for same 28lb bag. They also have a great selection of toys and chew things for dogs and the prices are slightly more affordable here. The store is fairly organized and easy to navigate through. The place is never really busy, so getting in and out is super easy, plus plenty of parking in the shopping center. read more

This Pet Club is one of kind, from its location to the very items that it carries, in my situation I had been looking for rabbit pellets that my finicky rabbits would eat. I found everything l was looking for at this location, but to understand what I and many other rabbit owners go through would really take a while to explain. Well to put it like the one in ten Veterinarians that tends to my rabbits Butterscotch and Dash; they are considered exotic pets and we Love them. I wish I had a pet club closer to me, as this ones an hour (round trip) away. I am very impressed with Pet club as I usually shop at petsmart, etc. I must say they have great deals (20% off blue buffalo wet food) and a lot of variety depending on what you are buying. Cat mom tip: there is only a small selection of litters here, only half an isles worth and I also only saw up to 25lbs in the litters I buy (Arm and Hammer & Everclean). They have a wide variety of cat foods (dry & wet) and from bargain to higher end. I buy Blue buffalo for my Kits, they only carry one type of blue buffalo kitten food (luckily my girls like it!) so I ended up buying a small flat of it for a very low price! Tons of unique cat toys and an impressive amount of cat trees and scratchers that were so much more affordable than the other stores. Definitely going to be one of my go to pet stores, more like a pet Costco for me since it's a little far out for me and good for bulk buys! read more

Pet Club is one of the best places in the Bay Area to purchase anything for your pets! It's hard to find stores that does discounts for pet related things, and you can find just about anything there! The San Mateo location probably is the best one in my book of the ones in the Bay Area, even if it does mean that I have to cross the bridge and pay tolls. But the discounts themselves are worth it. My dog eats a specific brand of kibble and I've only really been able to find it at the SM location. However, since they are a discount store, I always understand that they can't keep everything in stock, so I just take my chances. However, I do try to call and see if I can find out if they have it in stock before coming. Fair warning, they are a family owned store and have extremely limited employees. Their systems are pretty old school, so a lot of things takes extra time. The cashier can answer the phone, but can't run off to the floor to check, so lots of on hold. But I'm super glad that they're still around even through the pandemic. They have fantastic sales every week for different pets and brands. They carry a lot of name brands and the discounts can be really steep. I love the Instinct brand and it's typically 20% off. I save about 15 dollars for the 20lb bag of dog food! I've also purchase my doggy poop bags, shampoo and frozen food from here. We've visited the VIP pet care and it's pretty stream line, but extremely limited hours. Otherwise, with it hard being able to get inventory and the store is pretty old, I'm still a huge fan of discounts and getting everyday pet things for a good steal! This store has many fish in tanks for sale... but the fish look suck and incredibly unhappy in horrible conditions. I don't think anyone has cleaned these fish tanks in months. Some are so dirty and the water so cloudy that you can barely see the fish inside. This should be illegal keeping fish in such terrible conditions!!!!! read more

Pet Club is the only pet store that carries a certain kind of ball that Maxie likes to play with. It's a heavier ball, so it's great for tossing and travels quite a distance when you throw it. It's also indestructible and can survive a lot of chewing. The only thing I wished this ball had was more buoyancy. Yes, it sinks like the Titanic as soon as it touches water. To date, I don't recall how many of these balls I have lost while playing with Maxie; and the company that makes them should be thankful for her as I keep buying more for her. The most I've ever bought at one time was three balls. They come decorated into either of these three things: baseball, basketball and soccer. I've bought all three and may particular favorite would be the soccer-themed balls. The baseball have that stitches on the side of the ball so it gets bumpy and unpredictable when you toss it. The basketball one has larger grooves and has a rougher and stickier exterior. The soccer one is smooth so it glides and covers a greater distance when tossed compared to the other two. I have searched for this ball at other pet stores and I don't have any idea why they don't carry them. To me, it's the best brand and best ball out there for any dog. That's why as soon as I see a Pet Club, I immediately go in and buy a few extra balls because I anticipate on losing some (if not all of them eventually) on some point or another as a consequence of playing with Maxie. Anyways, I've rambled on too much about the balls, but I always appreciate the fact that they carry this particular brand. I almost forgot to mention that these balls are vanilla-scented so it gives out a nice aroma. Aside from the balls, they have carry all kinds of things needed for any pet you may have that comes in different shapes, sizes and form. Their prices are also relatively cheaper compared to PetSmart and Petco. It's also conveniently located just off of 101 and 92 in San Mateo just before Foster City. What makes this place 5-star is for the friendly, helpful worker named Boran. I come to this location when i'm in San Mateo and twice she's helped me with getting basking lights for my turtle's heat lamp.Today, she was great in mentioning a coupon which saved me $1.50 (hey, these bulbs aren't cheap!) in addition to a free can of dog food since i had a minimum purchase. This PET CLUB is conveniently located off 101 & 92 East in San Mateo. It has adequate inventory. I mainly come here to buy dog food and dog treats. Their pricing is really good. A 33lbs bag of TASTE OF THE WILD is only $39.99. Elsewhere you would pay up to $60 so it's a good deal even cheaper than the internet. Every Sunday from 4pm till 5:30pm, they have a mobile VET that comes in their store to give yearly booster including rabies shots for your dog or cat. That's very convenient. The biggest plus of this PET CLUB is the neighboring businesses in this plaza. Right next door from it is Round Table, to the left of it is Smart and Final, then there is an Office Max and then the best part -- Fluff and Bath is on the other side. My local Pet Club closed a year ago and I was super sad. Thankfully this store is still here and still at a reasonably drivable distance. Their selection is immaculate and the price difference is definitely significant, rather than shopping from major chain stores or large online pet shops. I appreciate that they have a good selection on various foods, and offers a no frills shopping experience. They also still offer bulk treats, but are now prepacked due to the pandemic. Pet Club has the least expensive canned cat food around, but would you drive 42 miles round trip to save $13? Pet Club in Mountain View closed two months ago -too much competition from next door Costco, leaving me in Sunnyvale with the choice of going 42 miles round trip to San Mateo, or 40 miles round trip to Blossom Hill. A rush hour trip would be a murderous stop and go ordeal. 5.5oz can of Friskies buffet cat food is $0.65 at Safeway, $0.60 at Petco, and $0.49 at Pet Club. Costco has a 48 can pack for $24, but they include pate flavors that my spoiled brat cats will starve rather than eat. About every three weeks, Pet Club has Friskies buffet cat food on sale for $0.43, a can for a maximum of 2 cases, or 48 cans. Prices on their internet site. I have returns today, and tell the cashier immediately on entering. They don't give you a refund for the returns until after you have finished your purchase for today. Store is huge -the Costco of cat food, with dozens of cat food varieties, both canned and dry. Yes, they do have dog food, but I don't intermingle with the dog owners, as we don't have pets in common to talk about, and most of the dogs are the Taco bell kind, with a loud bark and sharp teeth nipping at my sandals! I'm in the line today with my purchases. The lady behind me has a plastic bag full of water and one solitary fish- my cats would like that!. I tell her I'm returning, and she heads over pronto to the other line. Got to have the manager there to operate the register for returns, as the prices are based on the receipt, which are different from current prices. One can only return items to the same store of purchase, and only with a receipt and within 30 days. My cats stopped eating the solid cat food, so I'm returning some solid food at $0.49 a can, and 3 oz Fancy Feasts, on sale at $0.55 a can. The manager needs to decipher the complex pricing on the original receipt, and credit it to my transaction, at the old prices. I purchase 12 cans of Friskies buffet gravy style fillets at $0.41 each using a coupon from Wednesday's Mercury News. Yes, some of us still subscribe to newspapers! The same coupons are on the internet site. I also get 9 3 oz Fancy Feast Medleys at $0.79 apiece, and 3 3 oz Royal Canin cans -the filet mignon of cat food- at $1.29 apiece Our big bubba cat, 17 pound Stan, loves dry food, so I get him a 14 pound bag of Royal Canin light (for cats on a diet) for $45 -compared to the $9 15 lb Friskies dry food at Safeway. That's $0.20 per ounce for the dry food, or double the cost per ounce of the Friskies canned food! My wife's 13 year old cat Marty was recently diagnosed with possible lung cancer, and has not been eating solid cat food. She gets him 5 pouches of 1.4 oz Fancy Feast Broths at $1.09 apiece. That's $13 a pound, or about the same price as Alaskan King Crab! I've known Marty since he was a kitten, and nothing is too good for our ailing kitty, member of the family. Place is cash only, so remember to bring your ATM debt card -used only here and at Arco gas stations -Costco now takes Visa credit cards -hurrah! Both my current and ex-wife are coupon ladies. We get an additional $5 off "gas credit" coupon for Sunnyvale, Mountain View or Palo Alto drivers, only available in the newspaper, good until August 5, and not on the internet. I wouldn't call myself a crazy cat lady because while I am crazy and a cat lady, I feel that the two are unrelated descriptives. I come here for the great prices and well-stocked selection of cat food, but it does come with a caveat and that caveat is that you will see some real legit crazy cat ladies and it is for real sad. Like, I never could have imagined how sad it looks until I came here and saw what could be a very real future of my shopping alone, filling shopping carts with cans of cat food that I'm too old, and feeble to carry myself, digging through clearance piles of partially opened things, and singing along to the Enrique Iglesius song 'Hero', while smelling the cans of cat food. Yes, that's right. All those things happen here on the regular. I used to buy my little cat dudes the good stuff when it came to food, but found that most of the time things went the way of them just looking at the food like, 'You want me to eat that, b*tch' and then me pleading with them to eat all this food I'd just spent my paycheck on to buy in bulk for their spoiled little butts. Recently I and my wallet decided that we would have no more of that, so now everyone gets Friskies, because it's cheap and they like it and it doesn't go to waste. I like to buy the stuff in bulk because my guys eat A LOT. Like, a lot a lot. Like, I def spend more money on their food in a week than I do on mine in a month, so I come to Pet Club which in the very back has kind of Costco style warehouse shelving with 24 packs of the same flavor cans. I like this better than the variety packs sold at big backs stores because there's usually only one maybe two flavors that my guys will eat, and then one of the flavors is one that they won't touch and then the last flavor will be something that they'll eat then immediately throw up (lookin' at you salmon lovers). The regular price of the full sized Friskies cans here are 47 cents a can, but if keep an eye on their sales you can snag the 4 cans for $1.50 price, and that's when I really go hog wild. This place is cash and debit only, so don't plan on accruing any airline miles while buying here, but their selection is great for lower, mid, and high end doctor recommended conditional diet foods for both dogs and cats. read more

This place has an interesting assortment of stuff I shop for when needing supplies for my dog. What they get though is both seemingly random and strange. However, they carry the dog food I use and a couple of the dog treats I like to get, but not all of them. I don't know why but their prices for everything I get is cheaper than everywhere else. That being said, the service is lousy sometimes. I went a couple weeks ago and has to ask a manager the availability of a particular product. The manager on duty told me that they were out and had no idea when they were going to order it again because the shipment needs to be big enough to order from the parent company. He said he could write my name and number down and call when the new shipment comes in. For some reason I got the impression that he wasn't going to do anything and toss the paper away. Well, that must have been the case since I went back to the store less then a week later for something else and saw the product I inquired about fully stocked. As a new pet owner, I wandered in here like a lost...puppy? We had just pulled my dog Jasper out of PHS and it was nearly closing time. I was (still am) overwhelmed by all the options. I think I stood there in shock, looking at leash options. Luckily FERNANDO came to my rescue. He showed me various options for leashes, harnesses, food, and was knowledgeable and friendly. I didn't feel rushed even though the store officially closed as I perused the organic, grain-free, definitely better than the crap I put in my body...food options for Jasper. Today, I went back for more stuff (yay $$$$) and he not only showed me how to put the crate together, but offered to do it for me. Additionally, he helped me create a tag for Jasper & rolled my overfilled cart around. It was like my own personal concierge. Now, I realize that my experience may be different because 1) I've been there during "slower" hours and 2) I probably looked shell-shocked/exhausted. Regardless, I am so glad I found this place. We came in today to exchange 10 cans of cat food. We had two employees helping us do the exchange, both were great & insuring a smooth transaction...... Until another gentleman that I have never seen before (assuming the on duty manager?) interjected himself into the transaction. He quickly began barking orders & berating the employees who had already begun helping us minutes before. We did our best to "defend" the folks helping us but he just kept carrying on to the point of making us all uncomfortable. I fully understand the need to follow all protocol. HOWEVER, there is a wrong way & a right way to go about teaching someone those steps. This gentleman was way off the mark & I feel absolutely horrible for the employees who had to sit through that in front of customers. In the 15 years we've been shopping here & at the south city locations this is the first time I've ever seen someone behave that way in front of a customer. I truly hope this gentleman is required to undergo some sort of training in proper management following this post & a couple phone calls. First off this store is huge - tons of selection for food, toys, seasonal pet clothing, and supplies. There's much more frozen raw food options here than the South SF branch. I started getting the Northwest Naturals raw chubs here for my dogs and the prices are great. Overall the prices seem to be better than some of the other major retailers, if not, it's very comparable. Check in on yelp and get a free tuff ball / tennis ball for your pup. Management here is poor. I've had a number of issues with things ringing up incorrectly and signage and not being updated - but them not honoring it, which is just ridiculous. I've also been told one policy but have had associates not honor it, again, ridiculous. Some associates here are great, others are seriously the absolute worst. The inconsistency is just terrible. Dirty and unkempt store, old storefront needs a serious remodel. Pricing may be cheaper than big box PetSmart/PetCo stores, however here in the Bay Area which is increasingly expensive to live, where rich get richer and poor get poorer-and have no choice but to eventually move for cheaper housing...the former do not mind paying slightly higher prices if it means going to PetCo/PetSmart where you can always expect aquariums and aisles to be immaculately clean and staff in uniforms easily identifiable as employee team. read more

Too bad we didn't come during the pet adoption time, which is late Sunday afternoon... The brand of canned dog food that I buy is a lot less from Pet Club than any online or other retail store. So much less that it's worth a drive out to Pet Club. Their prices on dog treats is great too. The same brand of dried dog food is also less or the same as from any online or other retail store. In addition, Pet Club has a huge variety of other foods and supplies that make a visit worthwhile. Customers need to understand that Pet Club buys pet food in bulk at wholesale prices and then marks them up less than other stores. S & I adopted 2 kittens from the Peninsula SPCA 8 days ago. The SPCA had diet recommendations that our local Nob Hill does not carry. We checked Petco and petfood express and both were high. - Their food was HALF PRICE here both wet and dry. - Their cat litter was $7 cheaper than Target. - The only negative is they don't take credit cards. I would like to express my concerns towards one manager that is no only rude but lacking in customer service. I have been a customer for years and have always been treated well from the cashiers to Fernando, one of the managers. Fernando has been amazing and should receive the recognition that he deserves. The other manager, Benson, is not only rude with an attitude problem. He has no customer service and I have seen him show attitude to many customers on the floor with no shame. As a manager, I hold him to a higher level for customer service and professionalism. If Pet Club cares about their customers, I suggest they remove him from his position immediately! read more
