I came here once and I won't come back. I ordered a fish and shrimp combo. The fish was like a flat, dry cake not dissimilar to a frozen fish cake. How are you an establishment that has been serving food for decades and you serve me cold fries and soggy fish? Your fries come with everything! You didn't even try. All I wanted ( after telling my gf how great you were), was the nostalgic memory of what I have eaten since childhood and you have ruined it. Ok, the Pete's by my office on Central just north of Broadway is great so when I decided to pick up a couple of shrimp and chips orders for my family on the way home today, I was sadly disappointed. The fries were a cold, soggy mess and the shrimp had about three tablespoons of table salt on it! I have been going to Pete's since high school and am addicted! There are only a few locations who don't do the butterfly shrimp but most of them do! I love the shrimp, crabettes, scallops, mushrooms, zucchini, and burgers! The best part of Pete's is by far the sauce and shrimp! The only thing I do not like from Pete's is the fish(weird I know) but it's just squared frozen fish... If you want a good fish stick then I guess it's ok. It's still a cash only building but most have an ATM now. I like how they have kept with their original standards if cash only. I normally do not write reviews about places, but I just had to share my experience because I was so disappointed. I decided to go on a Saturday afternoon for the first time to Pete's Fish and chips. I've been hearing about this place ever since I moved here when I was 16 and I am 27 now. This place is talked about so highly, so naturally my expectations were pretty high. I ordered a four piece fish and chips an order of onion rings and my boyfriend got a hotdog and some french fries with a soda and it all came out to about $17. Not bad, however the flavor of the fish was not what I was expecting I was expecting something a little better than just a lightly fried generic fish patty. I have been craving onion rings for the last week so I decided to also order some onion rings. The onion rings had no flavor and were over battered and very dry. My boyfriend and I did not want to complain to each other about our food, but finally towards the end of our meal, I explained that it wasn't what I had hoped for. I'm disappointed enough to post this. I really hope that if I come again or try a different location that I experience something a little more worth my time! read more

I used to love this place. The employees are still great, the onion rings are the best you will ever find but the fish is now previously frozen rectangles of pressed scraps (seems it has been for sometime now) and they discontinued oysters, my all-time favorite. Stopped by last Friday, spent a LOT of money, drove home and found that no one would touch the fish patties. Everyone wanted Fish and Frings (fries and rings) but settled for no fish, just Frings. Sorry, Pete, I will not be back and will always recommend to my guests that they skip this is old Phoenix institution. I really like the shrimp and fish and chips combos. Their fish and shrimp are not like most places though, the shrimp is like a batter with some shrimp in it, the fish is more like a formed patty, but they are way better than most fast food options and generally cheaper. Only real gripes are the cash only and that they don't have regular ketchup available, the Pete's sauce is like a spicy ketchup. Those are relatively minor though, still strongly recommend. read more

My husband and I have wanted to try this place out for some time now. We finally made it in last night. For those of you who aren't big fried fish fans, they have other stuff too like burgers and chicken strips. I ordered the #1 seafood combo, which is 1 fish, 4 shrimp and fries. I was expecting the shrimp to be smaller, but they were actually filet size. Neither the shrimp or fish impressed me. They come with two 2 oz containers of this special sauce, which wasn't that great. The fries were decent, not great. It took awhile for the food to be ready, but I think that's because they don't put it in the fryer til you order it. If you do go here, be prepared...they only accept cash (they don't take $50 or $100 bills). There is an ATM there. read more

Went here for the first time in years. I knew what to expect. The square fish was how I remembered. I don't think it's bad. Tastes similar to filet o fish. Fries were average at best. The most disappointing part of the meal was the shrimp. The review that said scraps of shrimp surrounded by 1 inch batter is correct. I have never seen shrimp this over battered in my life. By weight, they must be about 90% batter. It really borders on false advertising. And the coleslaw was a sloppy overdressed mess. Pete's is an overpriced fast food restaurant, not a proper fish and chips establishment. Oscar's Pier 83 blows them away. Even Long John Silver's is much better than Pete's. Bottom line, if you must go here. I only recommend ordering the fish. The shrimp is 90% bread. read more

my first experience with Pete's was many years ago when I was visiting my father-in-law at my wife's ancestral homestead just north of here on Turney. My wife went to get Pete's for dinner. Everybody dug in. afterwards I said, "Honey, no offense, but Pete's really isn't that good." she replied, "Yeah? so what else is new?" she'd been going there since she was a little girl, I guess she was just used to it. it was like a tradition. that place has been there for over 40 years. my wife proceeded to tell me about the time they tried to feed an oysterette to their basset hound; instead of eating it, she rolled on it, as she would have a dead bird or something really smelly and dead. anecdotes aside, I can't recommend their fish, although many seem to like it. their Monsterburgers are actually pretty good. read more

Pete's was a slightly better than average meal for a slightly better than average price. I went with two of my friends, knowing nothing of the place beforehand. I am from the east coast and the place reminded me of the little restaurants you would see dotting the the lakeside. I ordered a burger and fries, my buddy got the fish and chips, and my other buddy got fried zucchini. My burger was good, larger and better than one at a fast food place but not as high quality as a real restaurant. The fish and chips my friend ordered, i was surprised to see, were frozen patties and fries. This disappointed me, but i was not eating that meal. Really bad food. The "Monster Burger" was flat, tasteless and very small. Everything was DRIPPING with grease. The fries were actually translucent they were so greasy. No one behind the counter handling food wore a hair net. We were asked "for here or to go?" but there is no "here"; It's a patio with filthy picnic tables. There is no public restroom. I really like the fish and chips but the time that it takes to get food is too long. I stop by about 1 - 2 times per month because it's the only place near that I know with a drive thru and fish and chips. However, the last 4 or 5 times it's taken more than 10 minutes to get my food. This can easily be solved if they have food frying throughout the busy times of the day like lunch time. They know that they're going to sell a lot of fish and fries so these 2 items should be cooked before they're ordered instead of cooking by order. There are a ton of people going to lunch in the area and Pete's is probably missing out on their business because they know they'll be waiting in line forever. read more

Cheap prices. Horrible food. This was my first time here living in Arizona all of my life. The fried fish patties are minced, not even filets of fish. It's like I bought them from Gordon's fisherman in the freezer section. Second the shrimp was all batter, barely any shrimp. I'm assuming that was minced too. I suggest going to Knock Kneed Lobster. Fabulous flaky fresh fish that I've been enjoying for years. If you're lazy and just want someone to fry your fish patties go down to Pete's and they will do just that for you. read more

Do not waste your money or time. Went here on a recommendation, do not waste your time unless you think a square piece of frozen fish that they cook for you is good, the shrimp terrible. Staff was rude, asked for ketchup with my fry's was told to go to the store and get some if I wanted it. I went to petes fish a chips for the first and last time a few weeks ago. I ordered the fish and shrimp platter with chips, and a "everything monster burger" I believe it was called. This was by far the WORST seafood meal I have ever eaten, along with the WORST burger I have ever had as well. The fish was something I would expect Joe Arpaio to serve to inmates in his jails, I've bought better quality fish at a discount grocery store boxed by some company I've never heard of for $1.99 for 12 patties. The shrimp, well I don't think there were actually any shrimp, it was just breading. And lastly the burger, the most disgusting part of this meal, I actually vomited after one bite from the disgusting taste of the substandard meat that was used. It didn't even taste like beef. drove 7 miles to pick up an order. they forgot our burgers, had to drive back to pick them up and our "monster" burgers had a piece of cheese and a pickle on a hockey puck. nice long black hair inside my drink, and a thick inch of breading around a morsel of shrimp. I was excited to try since I see the bumper stickers everywhere. We order through a barely discernible drive through window speaker. Which resulted in a screwed up order. Ordered a number one with a crabette on the side. Get up there to pay to find out its cash only and have to use the ATM on the side of the building. Once everything is said and done, they don't even serve lemon wedges with their seafood. The red sauce that comes with is a mixture between ketchup and hot sauce *ew* and their excuse for lemon juice is a packet of "lemon juice".
