We came here for an early dinner before our concert. It was a pleasant surprise that when we arrived, they still have happy hour. The restaurant looks casual and cozy, a little different from the posted photos. The service was welcoming. The server approached our table and showed us the happy hour menu. We ordered a few items, pork belly tacos, chips and salsa,, tostada, the filet mignon skewers and the flan dessert. I ordered a glass of red and my boyfriend had a glass of tequilas. Food is good. We don't like the tostadas since it was too spicy. The server kindly took it away and said he'd take it off the bill. Nice gesture. Overall, service is good, and food is great. I had forgotten to write a review about this place until now. A several months ago, my sister and I went to Pez Cantina and sat at the bar. To our left there were two well-clad young Asian women. A few moments later, I saw a woman approached them, shook their hands, and introduced herself by saying, "Welcome, I'm the owner, Lucy. Let me know if you need anything." After she spoke with them, she walked in our direction. I expected the same greeting, but instead she barely looked at us. I made eye contact, smiled, and said hello, thinking she would stop and introduce herself, but she barely said hello back and kept on walking. At the time, I was dressed casually because I was simply checking out the restaurant as a potential place to bring my real estate clients for a meal. Unfortunately, the interaction left me feeling as though my appearance made her assume we weren't important enough to receive the same welcome as the other guests. Whether that was her intention or not, that was the impression I got. There was also an issue with the bill that added to my disappointment. A server brought out a dish that we did not order. I told him we hadn't ordered it, and he responded, "Oh, you are right." I didn't think to check the bill carefully before paying, but when I got home I was wondering why the bill was high. When I checked the receipt, the plate that wasn't for us, had been added to it, along with a patron shot that we also did not order. The restaurant is nice, and the food is okay; however, that experience left me with a bad impression. Everyone deserves the same warm welcome, regardless of their appearance. The only color that should matter is green, because every customer contributes to a business. Because of my experience, I won't be returning, nor will I be bringing my clients there because I wouldn't want them to experience the same dismissive treatment. This is the main reason I am giving Pez Cantina one star. If zero stars were an option, that's what I would have given them. read more

Attended a UCLA event here. The ambiance was great!! Excellent location in DTLA on grand in the financial district! This takes their outdoor space to another level as their customers can spread out around the property. They had a great taco spread from carne asada to vegan options - absolutely great attentive service. I ordered the taco plate which includes 2 tacos, rice and beans. It was 25 dollars which I think is a bit too much for the plate. I don't think it was worth 25$ but the service was great. The owners are a husband and wife team who created the theme and their own original recipes. We ordered a seafood tostada and Blackened Ahi Tuna, a beer and Paloma cocktail. The Paloma is served in a cute clay ceramic cup. Each meal was nicely plated and delicious. I would definitely order the Ahi Tuna again. There was one bartender (Cesar) on duty. He was very busy handling the drink orders for all the customers. It was quite entertaining watching him make each order. The outdoor patio is quite large and a super popular hangout for lunch, dinner and happy hour. As you enter the restaurant, the hostess station is by the door. Straight ahead is the bar. Pez is a hop, skip, & a jump from my office so I stopped in for a quick drink. This modern Baja eatery serves sustainable, coastal Mexican dishes. The restaurant is spacious and airy with a festive outside patio. I had a seat at the bar where I was greeted by a darling bartender named Brianna. She was very personable. Since the summer heat was starting to set in, so I ordered a Cucumber Jalapeño Margarita because it sounded refreshing. Brianna mixed it up perfectly. It was nicely balanced - not too sweet with a little bit of spiciness. I regret that I didn't have time to order food or enjoy more of my conversation with Brianna. She deserves 5 stars! They weren't at all busy but service was poor. The server forgot my order of chips and guacamole. The chile relleno was excellent but very small for $34. After it was delivered to my table the server didn't come by to check on it until I was almost finished. When he finally came by, I reminded him about my chips and guacamole order. I've been a frequent patron of Pez, since it's a classic spot for happy hour given that is walking distance to the office. The drinks and food (esp the chips & guac, with the seasoning on the chips!) are typically great. But I have to honestly review the service I received this time. 1. I placed a order for 2 drinks, I was charged for 3. It wasn't until I pointed it out, that the server realized that she made a mistake. They were able to void and refund me though. 2. I went from a more intimate happy hour where #1 happened to a company event the same day. A server was coming around and passing around pre-paid drinks at the event. Despite asking 3 times in a row - he kept saying to me "wait, there are others ... first", and clearly went around to every single male around me. My guy friend standing next to me witnessed this situation, and reached over to the server, who stopped without hesitation to let him grab a drink (which my friend passed to me). A decent lunch spot for an office building. I came here for a celebratory promotion lunch. Although it would not have been my first choice, it was enjoyable. The Caesar salad was good but quite salty. The short rib was tasty. And the tres leches cake was just way too sweet! We had chips and salads when seated. I made a reservation for a group lunch, which went smoothly at first. We were seated indoors in a very stuffy, hot area--keep in mind it was 90 degrees outside. Fortunately, they did accommodate our request to move to a cooler spot. However, service completely disappeared after the food arrived. It took nearly half an hour just to get a to-go cup. We had to flag someone down for water refills, takeout boxes, and finally the bill--which already included an automatic 20% tip for a large group. After a long meeting, my colleagues and I decided to try out Pez Cantina, and it was fine. The cucumber jalapeño margarita was awesome 5/5. The guacamole and chips were so so. Way over salted and seasoned. The two taco combo (had the carnitas and the chicken tinga) - on the otherhand was bland. The side salad was delicious but the two tacos were overly chopped and frankly I could barely tell you which was chicken and which was pork - both lacked flavor. Service was nice and friendly. Brought my mom here for her birthday during a Friday afternoon. There were no big plates or combination plates available. The only thing closely resembling that was the molcajete. My mom and dad ended up enjoying this so the visit wasn't a complete disappointment. I got some tacos that weren't that great. We also ordered some queso fundido that could have better. We were still seated quickly on the gorgeous outdoor patio. Now, being from San Diego, I'm a weather wimp, and the idea of sitting outside in early December did not thrill me. Pez staff were super friendly, and rolled a nice heater over immediately, which caused my out-of-town snow-based coworkers big belly laughs, as they found the 50-degree weather charming. I came to check this place out for lunch. Its located in a beautiful area, atop the hill where you get a nice view of the us bank building which happens to be the tallest building in DTLA and my favorite. I started off of with the guacamole (6/10) and salsa (salsa was excellent 9/10) which came with freshly made chip some of which had a lime and spice kick to them. Next I ordered the oysters which might have had to much of briny taste to them for me 7/10. I moved onto the Squid Ink Aguachiles they originally came with apples but I had those removed. (7/10) To drink I had their michelada, I didn't love it but it was good enough for a hot day. Lastly the service was my favorite part of the whole experience thanks to Arturo the busier he is so sweet and welcoming he gives me Tio vibes. My waiter Daniel was also super sweet and attentive. This was my second visit to Pez. The first was several years ago. It was a cold, rainy night and I ordered the pozole for comfort and warmth. It was delicious. On this visit the weather was beautiful. I ordered a taco platter with a side salad. It comes with two tacos -- I got one fish and one carnitas with chile verde. The fish taco was bland and the carnitas was juicy and flavorful. My plate had rice and beans instead of salad, so I tried them and was disappointed. Both the rice and the beans were tasteless. The salad arrived up on request and was delicious! Filled with nuts and seeds over field greens and arugula... I loved it. My friend ordered the tostada and enjoyed them, though two were very aggressively spicy. Service was friendly and just attentive enough. If you go, stick with pozole and salad! read more

I ate at Paz last night as I had stumbled upon. It was very hungry. The food was outrageously good I had a Bronzino dish with a tomato salsa and the Bronzino was so fresh and hot. It was spectacular. We went to Pez cantina tonight to celebrate my friend's birthday, and let me just say, it was definitely memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. It started off with promise: we were seated quickly. Great! But then... we sat. And sat. And sat some more. It took 15-20 minutes before we had to flag someone down just to ask if we could, you know, participate in the concept of dining by maybe ordering some drinks or food. Once we finally got some attention, it became clear that our server had either never tasted the food or was boldly committed to the art of improv. When we asked basic questions about the menu, she confidently gave us completely wrong answers instead of simply saying, "Let me find out." Gotta admire the commitment to fiction writing. We eventually placed our order, and that's when the real fun began. Our food came out cold, undercooked, and late, a true culinary trifecta of disappointment. But the real kicker? Despite ordering drinks with our appetizers and entrées, the alcohol never touched our table. Not once. Somewhere out there, our cocktails are living their best lives, while we remained painfully sober at a birthday dinner. The whole time, we watched a table of 10 behind us get consistent, flawless drink service back and forth, as if they were filming a commercial for customer satisfaction. Meanwhile, we were left wondering if we were on some kind of hidden camera show called "Just Pay the Bill and Get Out." Oh, and that special birthday note I added to the reservation? Completely ignored. No acknowledgment, no gesture, not even a passive-aggressive candle. It was as if our celebration was an inconvenience. By the end of this hour-and-a-half train wreck, no one apologized, no one seemed remotely concerned, and the overall vibe was: "Please leave so we can continue ignoring the next group of customers." Mission accomplished. The food was bad, the service was worse, and the attitude? Let's just say the bar isn't in hell..it's in the basement below hell. Would not recommend, unless you're craving a lesson in patience and humility. Bottom line: If you're reading this review because you're wondering whether or not to try this place, let me be very clear--do not. Two stars is based on food and service. Ambiance on the patio outdoors seating is a 8.5... beautiful as seen in the pictures, would be a ten if there was a better view of the city from the patio. Drinks are a solid 8... delicious but small sizes and liquor in drinks was weak... barely any in them. Add a little more liquor to drinks easily bumps them up to a 9 and increase the size of the drinks and you got a solid 10 no doubt. Food was nothing to write home about... unless you just want to complain which I try not to do. The calamari was a solid 10! No complaints here.. portion was fair and taste was amazing.. spicy and sweet and full of robust flavors! Definitely get this if you come here. Pozole lacked flavor.. chunks of white chicken meat in the pozole which also had no flavor. They did serve it with cabbage, onion, and radishes ( I think there was a touch of cilantro too.. not enough to add any real noticeable flavor however.. this is an easy way to boost flavors in pazole so I recommend they add more to their garnish bowl) unfortunately I found their pazole to leave so much to be desired I ate less than half and then went somewhere else and got something to eat. My friend ordered fried fish.. huge portion as seen in the photos, however no taste to it, extremely bland and it's texture was mushy. It was served freshly fried and hot. Not sure how they can improve this dish other than just adding seasoning to it ( it didn't taste as if it had any seasoning whatsoever). The rice was undesirable as the flavor was also bland and it was undercooked and the black beans also lacked flavor. Perhaps adding some salt and a pepper or two to the pot they cook them ( or heat them up in) would be a easy fix. Lastly the chips and salsa.. overpriced for very small serving of salsa and it was ordered for a table of four. Flavor however was fresh and delicious. The chips ( good portion of chips) were freshly cooked and had the perfect amount of salt. Only suggestion is to at the bare minimum double the salsa portion and this would jump to a easy 10. As it is currently served I would give it a 6.5-7 At the end of the day I would not recommend this business to anyone who is wanting to get dinner.. great place to stop for appetizers and drinks however and would recommend this business for the purpose of going out for drinks and appetizers. read more

Simply put, order the molcajete, you will not be disappointed. As you can see in the photo it is an array of shrimp, beef, chicken and vegetables.
