What a gem of a place. I came here and dined in their bar area, it was a quaint ambiance. Phil walked around and asked people how their dining experience was, and asking for feedback. The chairs were on wheels, so it was almost like an airport lounge - felt like I was enjoying a cocktail before boarding a flight! I had the chicken Marsala, it was a heaping portion, so I took the rest of it home to eat later. The bread was fluffy and warm, and it was great to dip in the clam juice! Been coming here for over 30 years, even when it was a different restaurant. As Phil Trani's it's been good, but not great. The service was always as good as it gets, so the food didn't have to be as good. However, in the last few years it has become spectacular. Supposedly nothing has changed in the kitchen and I guess it doesn't matter. But in the last year or so it has taken an incredible turn for the better. The shrimp cocktail was always the best. I know it doesn't sound difficult, but theirs was always perfect. Large, plump shrimp that were perfectly cooked, a common mistake. Lately the swordfish, pastas and especially the pot roast are fabulous. What always impresses me is not just one or the other thing on the plate but ALL of it. And, that has been exceptional lately. The prices have gone up a bit, but have you looked at what YOU'RE paying for food lately? This kind of attention to detail is special and should be rewarded Regardless of the so-so reviews, especially if they were written more than 2 years ago, don't miss this restaurant. I usually follow the Breezin wherever they play, until last time they were there. I called 2wks in advance to make a reservation thinking it's giving me plenty of time. Well, fully booked and called again, the person who answered was very RUDE. Anyway, I went to see the group coz I know them, stood at the door and NO one DARE to say anything ( the waitresses ), except if they know you, even the greeter at the door. As always, the people at Trani's are great. They are attentive and very nice to talk to. Regrettably though, I think the food has gone downhill over the years. The menu really is in need of a serious revamping. With all that is going on locally in the Italian restaurant scene, Trani's seems like it just has not put in the effort to stay up with the times. The bread, for instance, is very plain and lacking in much taste. The entrees, while promising on paper, really don't represent what this place could and should be given its storied past. I used to frequent Phil's regularly a few years ago. I decided to introduce the restaurant to a first-timer. We were immediately greeted and seated in the bar upon entering the restaurant. The dining room is only open on certain days, which I found odd. Especially when you're paying large amounts for a plate of food only to be seated in the colder, impersonal sports bar. The bar was not crowded. About 1/3 of the tables were occupied. Two or three with people who had already finished their meals. Soon bread, butter, menus, and water arrived. We gave our drink orders and put n a half order of calamari. Everything to this point was great. After we finished the calamari, about 25 minutes elapsed as we waited for someone to take our dinner order. No drink refill, no server checking on us, just waiting. Once the dinner order was placed, we waited another 25 or so minutes. This time we did get drink refills. Iced tea and lemonade. We ordered the Veal marsala with white rice and steamed veggies and the Ribeye steak with a baked potato, steamed veggies, and a dinner salad. The Veal was pounded so thin it was ruined. It was dry and flavorless. Overcooked. Everything else on the plate was full of flavor. The bone-in Ribeye steak was done to perfection. A perfect mouthwatering medium rare. The baked potato was also good, although they ran out of chives and substituted them for bacon bits. The dinner salad was as usual. good. All in all, the bill was $141.89 for two dinners. We won't be back, as we expected more quality and service. So much more. Phil's is slipping. read more

Super cool bar area with tons of sports memorabilia. Dining area has booths and tables with candlelit lighting. But the coolest part is that the menus are backlit!! Service was great. There's a classic old school vibe of this place. Checked in and got a free appetizer that was chef phil's choice - fried mozzarella Calamari appetizer was delicious!! Loved it served in strips. Ordered pepper steak as an entree with mashed potatoes and salad. The salad was honestly a little underwhelming it was just literally iceberg lettuce with one slice of tomato on top. Had lunch for the first time at this spot. I had cobb salad and my friend had steak salad. They were both good. Servers were all pleasant and provided prompt service. We took advantage of the outdoor seating. It was a nice setup in a courtyard with a large sun umbrella. If you are in the area, I'd recommend to dine here. read more

My coworkers and I met up for some lunch. We were all looking forward to eating here, as most of us had never been (including myself). There's free parking right next to the restaurant. I did not see any valet. I'm not much of a drinker, but my coworkers did bring their own wine. There's a $12 corkage fee. The decor falls somewhere between old school and stuck in the 80's. The vast majority of the clientele is over 60. The good food (2 items) - Free bruschetta with checkin - I was the only active yelper amongst the group, so I scored us the free appetizer. It contained excellent flavor in both the marinara sauce and garnishes. The marinara was rich and savory; the accompaniments were soft and fresh. The bread was crisp and well seasoned. At the time I thought it was a sign of good things to come. - Calamari - not as good as the bruschetta, but still good. Slightly over battered. The calamari was fresh, firm, and slightly chewy - not chewy in a bad way - rather, a good texture. Miscellaneous: The Sprite tasted funny. I asked Ashley (a manager who was assisting us) to switch to Coke, and she said Phil uses RC Cola instead. So I got some weird Sprite substitute, and had to stick with it because I knew I didn't want RC Cola either. The two good items were shared appetizers. My main items (chowder and ribeye) and third shared item (scallops) were all subpar (to put it nicely). The bad food (3 items) - Clam chowder - this was the worst clam chowder I've had in a long time. It was thin, and tasted stale. The consistency was water-like. There was no saltiness or creaminess whatsoever. It's like they dumped it straight out of a can, and made it even worse by adding water to it. This kitchen should be ashamed to have put this out. I hope Phil Trani reads this and makes changes because this clam chowder was absolutely horrible. I don't even remember the last time I didn't finish a cup of clam chowder. I can't adequately describe how hurt I was by this, because I love clam chowder. What a buzzkill. Sadly, it was only the beginning of a downward spiral. - 10oz ribeye - to be fair, I opted for charbroiled, not blackened. But I didn't know "charbroiled" meant "no flavor whatsoever." It's as if they didn't season my piece of meat at all. No salt, no pepper, no butter basting, nothing. I'm positive this was not a prime piece of meat. It was cooked to the correct doneness (medium rare), but many of the pieces were unchewable. This occurs when a cheap piece of meat is cooked medium rare or rare. This was probably select grade or lower. It was more of a 16oz bone-in, but the size didn't compensate for the lack of quality and seasoning. Another disappointment. (The rice pilaf was good. It had a light, hearty savoriness. You know you're in trouble when the rice pilaf is the best part of your steak entree.) - bacon wrapped scallops - Cathy (our server) let us order this as an appetizer instead of the full meal price because we didn't need the sides. (It confused us for a split second on the bill because it appeared as "shrimp cocktail.") I was really looking forward to these based on some good looking pictures on the yelp page. Unfortunately, they were overcooked. There was no desired sear. The inside was not soft as it should be. The texture was rubbery and hard-to-chew throughout. The best thing on this plate was the onion strings (seriously, how sad). To be fair, here's the entrees I didn't try, and my coworkers' feedback: (Gene and Dan were able to order filet, despite it not being on the lunch menu.) - Gene's filet: so-so - Dan's filet: excellent - David's blackened ribeye: average - Ken's walnut crusted rack of lamb: excellent - Selina's linguine with clams: not good Collectively, we consumed a vast array of hits and misses. Unfortunately for yours truly, most of my meal was a miss (soup, entree, and shared entree). The service was slow because they were jam packed by a lot of walk ins. (We had a reservation for six people, but had to wait a long time for our entrees.) Cathy and Ashley were sweethearts. They did their best to accommodate us. They didn't contribute to the two star rating; the food did that all on it's own. If anything, Cathy and Ashley saved Phil Trani's from receiving a lone star. read more

I've been to Phil Trani, several times and have finally decided to leave a review. We have always sat in the lounge area since we alway go to see the live entertainment while having dinner. Tonight, 3rd Degree was performing and they were outstanding! The service as usual was poor. It started off pretty good, and once we complained about the food the service went down hill. We ordered scallops and salmon plates. The vegetables and baked potatoes were cold on both plates. The salmon was over seasoned and over cook. Our server (Mary) started off ok then became rude once we complained. Mary, was not only rude, but took it a step further by rudely tossing our check on the table. Mary, when a customer complains do not take it personal as you are not the cook. Try to be accommodating for the poor quality of food. If you are looking for a night out with live music, this is an okay place to go. The food is on a scale of 1 to 10.....a 2 and I'm being nice. The service is a 2 also. read more

ATMOSPHERE (5 STARS): Reminds me of a Palm Springs supper club from the 80s, and the golden etched mirrors remind me of the second living room in Grandma's house (the one nobody used), and the sports memorabilia and movie poster front reminds me of Sunset Beach's Harbor House Cafe. That said, the place is so undeniably "Long Beach" that it feels like the Joe Jost's of steakhouses. The place screams "I'm 55!", and with the Hawaiian shirts It seems like a recently retired car show crowd came in for lunch. Come on a Friday and Saturday night and you can hear the cover band from the huge, dark and seedy bar area play just loud enough to make your aunt move her shoulders around, itching to dance, but quiet enough to hear everyone talk about that guy over there with the brown hair and grey eyebrows. COCKTAILS (2-5 STARS): Depends on the bartender. The first time: nice and strong, like a cross-fit feminist's handshake. The second visit (11/1/15), my vodka cranberry was weak. A ten dollar drink should not be weak. If it's weak the third visit, I'll likely change my rating to 4 Stars overall because a cocktail over $10 shouldn't be weak in a five star restaurant. SERVICE (5/3 STARS): The service is outstanding, but they seemed understaffed (busy) so you may have to wait for that second drink or refill. Second visit: friendly Rigo was on point, refilling our water and iced tea. FOOD (4 1/2 STARS): Interesting iPad like backlit menus. Fried zucchini was a good portion of hot, yummy potato chip-sized zucchini with parmesan and ranch. Dinner salad was a total little boy/bachelor's dream: a no-nonsense pile of almost entirely iceberg lettuce swimming in dressing. Baked potato was drenched in sour cream, with enough green onions to choke a grizzly. I'm not joking- I took a picture. They were everywhere, like green Tribbles. My 8 ounce filet mignon was a perfectly cooked medium rare, juicy, and not overly salted or seasoned, with just enough vegetables to pretend you're eating healthy. The free bread came with a big bowl of vanilla ice cream, but it was pretty salty. Second visit: confirmed the zucchini is excellent, and the calamari was one of the best (esp. for beginners). The 7 hour pot roast and pasta was tender without being fatty. The pasta with salty, watery sauce as a stand-alone was average, but mix it with the roast (which is how I imagined it) and it's like a pot roast rigatoni. MISC: Huge parking lot right off the 405, quirky and comfortable waiting area, free appetizer with Yelp check-in, live music Fridays and Saturdays, cool underused patio. This use to be a highend eatery. Not anymore, I do not know what happened. Tonight, went there at 6:00 p.m., and there was a total of 4 tables. After telling 3 people we were ready to order nobody came by to take our order. We got up and left after sitting there for 35 minutes. We told the waitress we left money on the table for the shrimp cocktail and glass of wine we ordered. She responded by saying they are short staffed and we have not been there that long. I think after 35 minutes is long enough. We were really looking forward to eating at this restaurant again because there are so few good ones in Long Beach. Will not be returning. Also, their homemade bread is the worst I have ever eaten. Wonder bread is 100 times better. Don't waste your time. read more

Long & Mellow: I don't know who Phil Trani is or what he did but I do know that he has a pretty good restaurant. I went here tonight with the folks and we had a nice slow-paced dinner. Here's the thing with Phil Trani's, it's a place you go to sit and have dinner and enjoy the company you're with, without being rushed. The decor is slightly dated but the atmosphere was warm. Our server was nice and friendly and she did a great job at reading us and telling that we were in no hurry, so she didn't push us at all. That was really rather refreshing. We all ordered wine (2 whites and a red) and as an appetizer we had the Sausage with marinara. It is basically sausage cut down the middle length-wise with melted cheese and sauce. It was pretty good and just the right amount to get us started. For a main dish I had the Sea Bass stuffed with Crab, served with mashed potatoes. It was good but the sauce tasted a little too much like tartar sauce for me. Mom had pesto. Dad had steak. All three were pretty tasty. Did any of it knock my socks off? Not really, but it was all really good. For dessert we had the Tira Misu Cheesecake. It was awesome and the coffee was pretty darn good too. Why can't I get my coffee to taste as good as dessert coffee when I go out? We arrived at Phil Trani's fairly early and it wasn't crowded at all but by the time we left the place was hopping. The bar was busy the whole time we were there. Would I go back? Sure, I know my parents liked it and I did too. A nice change from the corporate chains. Should you go? This establishment is absolutely unprofessional. We waited 34 minutes to be served bread, water and a soda. When we asked someone approaching our table if our waitress was coming back anytime soon to take our order, he blatantly ignored us. The waitress disappeared, and the staff is focusing on a bigger event going on cramming patrons into the bar. We made the decision to pay for the soda and leave, and the staff had absolutely no remorse. This was also supposed to be a a special anniversary dinner for my parents that was spoiled. We came to Trani's without reservations, but they were very gracious to seat us in bar area. We were checked on by none other than Mr. Trani. The place is old school. A flashback place where literally, everybody knows you name. The food was good with big portions. It's evident that Phil Trani gives 100% of his heart & soul to this restaurant. Phil Trani's plays to their loyal patrons well. The ambiance was not one I was expecting for fine dining - it reminds me more of dining in a living room with soft sofa chairs to eat from. A different experience for sure, not one I'm used to. The food was delicious, but did take some time for it to come out. Luckily, the wait staff are well to keep you stocked on bread and drinks in the meantime. They have live music playing in the other room and from the sounds and looks of it, it's a fun time! If you can do a bit more driving, you might find more contemporary options elsewhere - but for the location Phil Trani's is solid! read more

Met two friends for lunch at Trani's yesterday. One of my friends lives locally and is well known there for decades. The family owned restaurants in the LA area going back to the 1950s; the Long Beach property has been in business over 30 years. It's like having a meal at your affluent relative's home; comfortable, clean, and welcoming. Yesterday we ate on the patio. Two lunch specials that we enjoyed were the swordfish; grilled, and the pot roast chef salad. For our sides for the two swordfish orders we had mashed potatoes, pasta with marinara, fresh veggies (perfectly seasoned and cooked); a fresh delicious salad, and chowder. All delicious; all perfectly cooked. You can't do better. It's all delicious, comfortable and you feel right at home. And Phil is there to make sure of that! Go! read more

This place is pretty consistent and even though I thoroughly enjoyed the herb crusted sea bass, for $34 you should get the salad with the meal and not have to pay extra. This place has a band for entertainment on a Saturday night. I highly recommended the zucchini as an appetizers as they are breaded to perfection and they are served with a very nice ranch dressing. For dinner I have a vegetarian suggestion Pasta Primavera which was a total hit at our table. (5 stars) Be sure to complement your dinner with a red wine blend of that is out of this world by Conundrum. (5 stars) If you're staying for dessert I highly recommend the truffles which are made with raspberry, dark chocolate, and amaretto. (5 stars) The veal parmigiana is very good. Its a gernerous portion of veal and the vegetable was awesome because they were steamed with no oil and no butter which balances the rich parmigiana. I was not of fan of the Eggplant Parmigiana because the texture and flavor was nothing close to what Nonna used to make. It was too much egg and not enough eggplant.
