Great bakery with lots of selections. I was able to smell the bread and pastries' fragrances even before stepping inside the store. There was so much variety that it was hard to choose what to try. In the end we went with a bag of warm pan de sal, which was great while fresh. Simple but satisfying when you need a bunch of carbs. Also bought a sapin sapin to try, which was coconut glutinous rice, if I recall. It was a great dessert, not too sweet or heavy, but with a nice texture. Apparently the cafe inside the bakery operates separately, and we weren't much of a fan of them. We ordered a halo halo but that took forever and came out with the base consisting of a lot of melted ice cream. On the plus side, they did add in a variety of toppings, so it was tasty at the beginning, but we didn't try to finish everything in the end. I was in the area and got to thinking about fresh pan de sal so dropped by on a chance hoping for parking (and quickly found parking out front!) As soon as I walked in, I noticed the line of people with masks on (yay!) but some were clearly not appropriately distanced (boo!). I picked up a basket, quickly picked up some stuff, , and lined up as the 5th person on line. I asked for 4 bags of pan de sal (don't judge) and they were quick to process my order. They did have freshly made empanadas and churros but I did not get them this time around. Overall, the store had a decent selection of pre packaged baked goods and they were restocking when we left. PBH is part of my childhood so I'm partial to the store. I have to say that the quality of their products have not declined. It will always beat rival Filipino bakeries around the area! Pandesal and Bicho-Bicho are delicious! Who can beat sugarcoated warm dough on a rainy day? Pandesal is cheap for about a dozen pieces. Dip that into your coffee! Other things to look out for is ensaymada, kutchenta (sp?) and cake rolls! :) Can never go wrong with PBH! read more

When I was younger and lived in Jersey City, my memories of The Philippine Bread house would be a daily routine on Thursdays. My dad and I would wait for my mom at Journal Square, and then we would get our baked goods at TPBH for the weekend. Pandesal, ensaymada, hopia, and whatever else they were baking fresh for the day. It's been about 15 years since we've moved and are now located in the Washington DC area. We make a trip to NJ every 4 months and this place is always on our priority list of places to visit. We cannot leave NJ without some goods in tow. If you come early in the morning, you will see all the fresh pandesal that was baked. Heaven in a bag!! The bitsu bitsu (Filipino donut) tastes delicious as well. They usually have them behind the counter also. Their ensaymadas can't be beat. I recently learned that they make their deliveries to Filipino stores in Maryland and Virginia on Thursdays. I always noticed that these stores carred TPBH goods and wondered how they shipped it....and now I know! I always forget that they have a turo turo (buffet style canteen, you just tell them what you want and the will pack your plate) in the back of the place. I tend to get overwhelmed with all the baked goods and end up never trying the food. There is an adjacent parking lot but it gets crowded very easily, most especially on the weekends. There is also street parking. Prices are very reasonable with the quality of baked items they carry. Definitely a must stop if you are near this area...or if you are like me and live 4 hours away, make it a foodie trip! read more

Anytime I am in New Jersey, there is one thing I always do. I drive to Jersey City and I visit Philippine Bread House. Why? One word. Ensaymada. There is a reason why every year I constantly keep returning to this traffic packed area. Now, I have never tried the hot food they offer because honestly when I see shelves packed with ensaymada, I am too distracted to think of anything else. For those who don't know, ensaymada is a very popular filipino pastry that consists of buttercream, cheese, and sugar. It is 100% unhealthy and 100% satisfyingly delicious. Every bite it melts in your mouth and you are just wishing for more. The ensaymada in PBH is the best in Jersey City and one of the best I've ever tasted. Another classic favorite at PBH is their ube roll cake. What is ube? Glad you asked! Ube is a purple yam. Just like with a typical sweet potato, ube can be adapted into many different types of sweet treats. The most popular ones for Pinoy's are ube ice cream, ube halaya, and ube roll cake. If you haven't had ube, I highly suggest it. PBH should be your first stop. I recently bought a package of their Pan de sal (Filipino roll) and as of 5 minutes ago dug one up. It reminds me of the ones my Lola used to make. That is the highest compliment you can receive. Parking can be an issue. On the weekends..forget about it. There is a parking lot that is advertised as "customers only", but not a great deal of people follow that rule and leave their car there. Street parking can be a nightmare as well. Weekends during the midmorning and afternoon typically do not face issues. If you are ever in the area, I encourage. No, I TELL YOU to go to PBH. Read all of the review and beware! I've been here a couple of times, mainly because their Pandesal is the bomb. I will literally drive 30 mins from my house to get the freshly baked bread; if I'm crazy I'll come right when they're open 7-8AM. Yeah I know I'm doing the most, but seriously when you taste it, it is the softest piece of bread that you've ever tasted. The great thing is that they sell it by bag which has 10 pieces in it for $2.50. Yes two dollars and freaking fifty cents!! That is a steal, folks. The pandesal is basically the only thing that saves this store from me bashing them entirely. Onto the bad shit. One time I had come to pick up some ensaymada to bring for picnic. When I got to unwrap it, it was molded at the bottom. I checked the other bakery goodies I got and they were fine I guess since I got them off a different rack. But be on the look out for lots of that. They have a little cafe area there to get filipino food and drinks. I ordered the beef steak with my combo meal. IT WAS SPOILED! That means that they mostly likely take the food from the day before put it in the fridge and reheat it for the next day. Don't trust them when they say it's made fresh daily unless you're asking about the pandesal. I purchased some bread this morning PBH an elderly lady almost double charged with my purchased. I caught the error and I told an elderly lady that she had a mistake but refused to admit. Good thing! I can see through the screen and I corrected them but the young lady refused to admit as well. I told her to recount the Items. I was right. However, the young lady showed disrespect toward me and with an attitude. I asked politely what is Asado. She replied, Asado is Asado with an angry tone. I apologized to Nanay but not to the young lady. They should train their staffs on Business Etiquette. (Compared to Jolibee's employees most of their staffs are very friendly and warm welcome) If they don't retrained their employees on business etiquette they will certainly lose their business in the future. The bread is the perfect amount of fluffiness and will make you have food-gasms. I live really close to this place and trust me once you get the pan de sal, you can never go back to shoprite bread. I will buy a bag of pan de sal and literally kill it in a day....while on a diet...without using my hands if I have to. It is so damnnnn fine I'd have it for my last meal if I got a death sentence. This place is an institution to me. I remember coming here as a kid with my parents to grab hot pandesal (Filipino rolls) by the sack. I've told my husband about it so many times and we finally decided to stop by while passing through Jersey. We went towards the end of the day so it wasn't as busy as I remembered but I do know in the morning and early afternoon this place can get packed and parking can be hard. They have a nice little cafe inside with hot foods and they've added bubble tea which is cool. I do suggest going in the morning because when we arrived, there were just a few things to pick from. The Philippine Bread House.. My family used to come here all the time, and was always in love with this place every since I was a young kid. Why do you ask? Because they make the best "Pan De Sal" I ever had in this area! First of all, this Pan De Sal is made fresh, and if you do not know what Pan De Sal is, it is simple, just a small bread roll. And yes, it is CHEAP! You can get a freshly made bag of 8 pieces of Pan De Sal for... less than $3! YES LESS THAN $3!! As a tip, if you want a lot of this bread for some reason (my mom would always do this), she would call ahead and ask for 8 freshly made bags and by the time we get there, BOOM! it is fresh and ready to go! Unfortunately for everyone else though, they would all usually have to wait another 10-15 minutes for a new batch of fresh bread of they wanted it too.. I have to apologize for my mother for all those times that has happened, but hey, it's that good! For some reason, I cannot experience the same taste when it is already package in a plastic bag like most other Philippine establishments would sell the bread, I suppose the freshness from the oven just makes it so much better! Just note that they do offer the Pan De Sal already packaged, but with the ability to get it fresh... Why... would.. you... do that?!? Okay.. enough of me talking about this bread.. what else is good here?!? Well, I will say that the bitso-bitso! This is a Filipino-type donut that is elongated in shape here and covered with tons of sugar. This is also something you need to make sure you get FRESHLY made, because that is when it tastes the best! Keep in mind that this is messy to eat due to the sugar falling everywhere, so it is best to eat it over the bag they give you. This alone has made me despise eating those small Chinese donuts they usually have at Chinese buffets, they are somehow "similarly made" but do NOT do any justice to bitso-bitso! Back to my mom again, she used to always get the Pan De Sal and a small bag of a few bitso-bitso for me to have and enjoy! Okay, what ELSE is good here, well try the Ensaymada, which is a sweet bread that has cheese, butter, sugar on top. I also particular enjoy these and it is one thing you can keep for a couple days and it will still taste good. They also have an ube flavor (purple yam/taro) which is also good. I tend to get a few of these as well during my trips to the Bread House. As for more of what you can get here, there are many more different breads that a Filipino would recognize and they also make cakes here that you can order. Furthermore, you can order regular Filipino style food here as well, so you can have a small meal if you are hungry. This place is really excellent. I have gone in periodically since moving to the area a few years ago and have never had anything I didn't like. I went in yesterday to grab a bag of the famed pan de sal. They are soft and buttery like a potato roll, but even better and slightly bigger. They are great on their own (heated or not), good with butter, useful for egg and cheese sandwiches, an alternative for PB&J, etc. (Yes, I've done all these things with it.) I bought that bag of twelve about 24 hours ago and there are only three rolls left. And I didn't share. I also walked out with a mini ensaymada. Although I don't like most pastries, I can't say no to the flaky brioche-like dough, stuffed sometimes with purple yam or coconut. Yesterday, I went with the ube and of course it was gone almost as fast as I bought it. I've had some other brands of ensaymada and they're good, but I still think this one is the best, at least around here. There is also a small hot foods area in the back and, like many of the Filipino restaurants on Newark, you can get a combo with rice or pancit and two meats for around $5-6. I got two scoops of rice with chicken adobo and some kind of stew with cauliflower, bell peppers, and baby shrimp. Everything was great and not overly greasy or oily. I've had the empanadas from here and they're also good, with a nice balance of sweet and savory. Regular bread and even the American-style (as opposed to French) coconut macaroons are tasty. The staff has always been polite and patient when I've gone. This is definitely worth a stop if you're in JC and if you're curious about what Filipino bakeries have to offer. read more

The best times to come here are in the AM! There is nothing quite like fresh pan de sal (literally "salt bread") in the morning and Philippine Bread House does it best. The bicho (Philippine donuts) are delicious and amazing. Don't sleep on their ensaymada (sweet bread with butter, cheese and sugar) because its fresh and delicious here also - the way I enjoy their ensaymada is by placing it in the oven @ 350 degrees for 5 minutes. That way the cheese has melted! Heres a tip: PLEASE don't come here during the weekends. It is jam packed - and also parking sucks in this area of JC. The baked goods are amazing though. Wow. Did I not anticipate that my food be cold, overly salty, and generally unappealing. Tucked in an awful and up and coming section of jersey city (and near the courthouse) is this little Manila. The place comes equipped with halo halo, a fun mamon, and a little lady that wants you to hurry because you're holding up the line. Be prepared to point to a buffet type stand and make some quick decisions. With a ten dollar minimum for credit cards, I went to town. 'And I'll take that as well ' was the theme of my ordering. Who knew that would mean agonizing pauses between bites. All and all, I left wondering what happened, why am I so full, and where is the health department when you need it. I kid. But only a little. Seriously, the best Filipino restaurant I have ever visited (but then again, I was born and raised in Miami FL which does not boast a single Filipino restaurant, so my room for comparison may be off.) For starters, I really admire the service provided by their workers. They definitely make you feel like you are in a Filipino household, and they really try to show that they appreciate all their guests. They definitely call their elders "tito" or "tita", which makes you feel like you are a part of their family. The food... totally delicious. I tried the tocino, and it was crisp and warm. I tried the adobo, a little bit oily, but I definitey enjoyed the taste. Try the fried rice here. Try the halo-halo (although if you don't like the taste of toasted something, make sure to taste that). My halo-halo had a slightly toasty taste. I definitely left Philippines Bread House stuffed, so make sure you come here when you are hungry. There is also a selection of breads before you enter. After a not so great lunch at SanRa we did a Yelp search which lead us to this spot... The outer shell looked as though it just to be a Howard Johnson 60's structure and inside was just as sad cafeteria feel where transients would stop in. At first I was happy if not eager to try out the specialities... Racks and rolls of baked sweets, lechon and a food bar. I quickly called my friend I.T. a true Filipino to guide me though (most of it was in tagalog). She explain that all of it was high in fat, a cross between Chinese, Spanish and their versions... So, don't expect grand :( Boy was she right!! Guess I was expecting a cross between Japanese pastries a possibly a tad of French patisserie --light delicate freshness. NOT. Green Tea Roll -Too much lard, baking powder and food coloring --All Fake tasting. Sesame ball -gross, ooozed of grease probably re-used over and over, filled with black bean paste. My stomach cramped straight away. Apologizes to any one who loves this place. And, I even have empathy towards non-asians trying a "Vietnamese che" (a gelatinous bean dessert) for the first time... The fact that I only come here about twice a year doesn't really say much, but it makes the visits super extra special. They make their Pan de sal FRESH straight out of the oven. The line is long with folks just stocking up on it. I grew up eating this delicious bread. There is nothing like having it warm and fresh, it smells sooo good. It kinda sucks that we buy so much they have to be put in the freezer! My other weakness is ensymada macapuno, which is bread coated with sugar and cheese but also stuffed with coconut shavings. It is sweet and delicious. The other must haves for me are the rolls with cream cheese inside and their yummy doughnuts. I guess maybe it is good that I only come here twice a year max because otherwise, I would probably be really fat, eating pan de sal every day, and I would be poor... I mean, even more so than I already am. I have been going here with my family for years but it always seems like never enough. Stuff found at the Phillipine Bread House seems to be very hit-or-miss. Don't expect a fancy interior, it actually looks rather empty and a bit rundown as well. There is a small buffet/eating area that is apparently separate from the bakery itself. I was rather disturbed by the many flies around the open food so I did not give them a try. My sister bought a coffee from them, but regretted it almost immediately because you have to do everything yourself. You basically just buy a cup and then you're directed to the utensils and coffee area to pour and make on your own. I've tried their regular Ensaymada and their ube-flavored Ensaymada. The ube-flavored one is delicious - not overly sweet nor too cakey. The first regular ensaymada I had was quite good, but it was not a repeat experience the second time around (2 separate trips). I guess their regular ensaymadas don't sell as quickly as the ube ones because the one that we purchased had gone sour (which we did not realize until we unwrapped it in the car). I've also tried their ube cake roll which is pretty good. It is very similar to Chinese cake rolls, but the ube flavor is very mild. read more

They make it all day so there's always a fresh batch. Pan-de-sal goes well with corned beef, eggs, sweet sausage, spam, butter, cheese (or both) even dipped in coffee. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. Every philippine delicacy you can think of they have. The ensaymada here is my 2nd fave treat. I just all the shredded cheese on top of the roll, and they also put a liberal amount of butter on top, dont they? And when you eat it, its so soft and fresh you will think it will melt in your mouth. But my favorite treat is the fresh pan de sal. Its a masterpiece of Filipino baking. bobby flay and emeril can only wish to make bread like this. The best part is when you get to the store and they are just taking them out of the oven. They are piping hot, hot, hot. But oh man are they delicious. A bag of 12 rolls will cost you $1.50, if i remember. I suggest buying 3 bags because once you eat one, you won't be able to stop. Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT go here on weekdays between 10am and 2pm. The "students", and i'm being generous with that term, of Dickinson High School hang out in front of the store. they make don imus look like mother theresa.
