The ambiance reminded me of a deli in NYC. The Jerseys, pictures and signage on the walls made the place feel alive and fun! The young guy was very friendly and asked if I had a pick up order. Not exactly the greeting I expected but he was pleasant and took my order. Rita and the older gentleman... I think his name is Mark was extremely polite and welcomed me. Mark thanked me for googling and coming to his place for a Philly cheese steak. When I got home it was still hot and there was so much meat. It was very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Originally planned to check out a different sub place but they were closed due to a family emergency so Yelped and found this was the closest sub shop. You can feel the small family owned vibe as soon as you walk in. They're obviously famous for their Philly cheese steaks so ordered the 12 inch at the counter. Once your order is ready they'll call your name. I thought it was pretty tasty but I could not taste their famous red sauce at all. Meat was flavored well but definitely skimpy. The ends, about a third of the sandwich, was lacking meat. They could fill it up and add more onion. There's a 3.5% surcharge for using a credit card which is kind of a pet peeve of mine. Sunday April 6th, around dinnertime. I can't believe how I haven't written a review for this place yet. I have been here numerous times! This is truly a mom and pop, one of a kind hot sandwich shop. When you walk in, you are warmly greeted and hear the clanging of the tongs on the grill. After you place your order at the counter with one of the friendly staff members your name will be called out when it's your time to pick up. Seat yourself in one of their diner-like booths or seats and get ready to sink your teeth into a tasty Philly cheese steak! We ordered the original Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, $12.49 done "hoagie style." The friendly worker advised us to omit the red sauce if we chose "hoagie style" because the spices, oils, lettuce and tomato (for an additional 75 cents) will be just right. He was right! The fresh grilled meat and toppings were just perfect on the toasted Italian soft roll. Fresh grilled onions are just the best, aren't they? No matter where I go, I request my onions to be well grilled. Their premium fries were hot and fresh! $2.99. Personally, a bit more salt would have made them outstanding but the crisp outside and tender inside were pleasing. I walked in just to get a Philly cheesesteak... And left feeling like the honorary 97-year-old regular who's been coming here since the Great Depression. You know that old man/ woman who shows up every Wednesday, sits in the same booth, orders the same thing, and hasn't had to speak his order out loud since Nixon was in office? Yeah. HIM/HER The staff be like, "Hey Norm's here!" "Ray's here!" Whole restaurant claps like he just won a Lifetime Achievement Award. I was born in Philadelphia PA. My parents were from there. But grew up in New Jersey. I have talked about the best pizza, Italian food. Now the best Philly steaks. I have moved to the West Coast about 16 years ago came to Arizona lived in Chandler in the east valley there's probably two Philly steak shops that were mom and pop locations. In Mesa and one in Chandler. I've been to Philly famous on and off in the last few years, they have been good to me. I have had some things happen. I couldn't come back for a while, but they've been great for Philly steak sandwiches and other sub sandwiches. Phoenix New Times Magazine in the past had a critic check out 2 steak sandwiches shops trying out Philly Famous and Forefathers. 2 to 1 Phoenix New Times agree next to me Philly Famous is the best compare to Forefathers for the best Cheesesteak in the East Valley. If you pay even just a bit of attention, you can observe all of the fun chaos. There's one grill cook, one person to prep orders once cooked, and one person to handle registers and answer phones. Also, during my visit, I witnessed the grill cook (Italian lady) speaking Italian with who seemed like a regular. Just brought me back to when I lived in Jersey. My friend and I who are both from Jersey went in on this together. For us, his lady, and his mom, we picked up 4 footlongs ranging from the Italian cheese steak, the belly filler, down the original Philly cheese steak. Overall, we all thought the flavor, quality of ingredients, presentation, authenticity, and value based on price were great. Our only knock, and this is not on this establishment specifically, but in general every single cheese steak place out in AZ we've tried thus far (we are fanatics, enthusiasts, whatever you wanna call it), just cannot replicate the bread. An amazing cheese steak needs to have that real crusty yet soft Italian hoagie. The bread out here is either all soft with no crust/crunch or vice versa. Some sad pitiful places even use just straight up soft mushy hoagie buns similarly found in your local grocery store's bakery. If the bread was right, this place would be top tier. read more
