We finally tried Phil's pizza and I'm not at all disappointed. It was great pizza. We ordered and came picked up. Took it home and it was still hot and we ate a good 20 minutes from this place. We were told the sausage was a homemade recipe. It was great and plenty of cheese and sauce. We like a good thin crust tavern style pizza and Phil's was awesome. My wife and I like a extra thin so definitely next time we order will ask for extra thin. This pizza is definitely worth trying if your a real Chicago thin crust pizza tavern style lover. read more

There are so many pizza places you can pick up a pie in Chicago but I rather drive some distances to get the some pie at Phil's. There is no fancy exterior or interior fine dining restaurant appearance but only thing that matter is how the pizza tastes. I usually order the special (cheese, mushroom, pepper and sausage) pizza and takes around 30 minutes. Cash is the only currency they accept. Parking is free along the street. read more

I saw this place passing through Bridgeport and as a big fan of Chicago tavern-style thin crust pizza, thought I would give it a try to see it it stacked up with some of my go-to favorite pizzas. It has supposedly been in business since 1960 so I figured it's gotta be pretty good. I ordered over the phone and the cashier was very pleasant and helpful. My order was ready within 30 min and I picked it up. I believe it is cash only, just a heads up. I had a sausage pizza with extra sauce. I frequently order extra sauce because I find that most pizzerias don't put enough on. It was a good move here too. The pizza was very good. It reminded me a little bit of Beggar's, but tasted better. The cheese was pretty thick and the sausage was mostly underneath the cheese. I think that I would have preferred it on top, as well as a little less thick pie, but the flavors came together nicely. A very good spot for pizza! read more

I eat pizza on the North side, all of the time. The other day a South sider asked me where I like to go on the South side for Za'. I mentioned a name only because I knew the folklore of it but other then that I was clueless. When in the area, I might hit up usual chains like Connie's but I decided then I needed a more wider range of pizza culture. So, this was my first south side stop, of many to come. Phil's is a no frills type of joint. Not the typical family style restaurant with a waiter. There's a counter to order at, there are tables and chairs and then there is a restroom. You order your pie, you order a couple sodas and then sit and wait. Now, say you entered with a group of four or more and wanted drinks all around; you wonder could you purchase a 2 liter? They have them sitting in plain sight. This is a not an option. 2 Liter sodas are only available for delivery. All diners in, must purchase an individual soda. Yeah, I didn't quite get it either but then again, they don't offer much in the arena of condiments and flatware. They don't have cups either but they do have plenty of seating and free parking up and down the street. Booze is not sold but if you want to indulge, you'll have to bring all components in order to enjoy. It's food fast done correctly. Chicago style thin crust pizza is what is being ordered often. The door is always swinging open despite it being dead inside, this is about any time. The kitchen is filled with people constantly preparing and loading pizzas into their ovens. During the cold season which is when my visit occurred, the only heat in the place was that which was emanating from the kitchen, so dress appropriately. The lady working the counter had as much nicety as an employee working the booths at any CTA train stop. Although the latter may be sweeter. However, she was nicer with those that seemed to be repeat customers or locals. Their menu is bare. It's thin crust, choosing from a small selection of sandwiches or pastas and that's it but it works for them. I've loaded a few photos of a large two topping I shared. The pie had those large pieces of sausage commonly found in deep dish pies, it was overwhelming for me since meat was in every single slice but that's more of a personal difference than negative. Sausage, garlic and a dusting of crushed red pepper. Taste and texture were good. Served piping hot right out of the oven. First let me say right off the bat that I love Phil's but I deducted one star (and was considering another deduction but felt it would be too harsh) because the people that work there are severely challenged. 1) They get orders wrong and are sometimes just rude... 2) They don't take credit cards or Visa debit cards (in this age of not carrying around as much pocket monies or just impulse hunger pangs influencing an order urge, this is a minus for them). For all the times that I have now ordered, their dumbfounded voices when I ask for a thicker crust is just wearing thin. I have ordered many pizzas from them and have talked to the same women a few times and she's just clueless and borderline rude. I have stopped ordering from places on that basis alone... so Phil's get with it! The same woman screwed up my orders a couple of times but for the most part, she shows glimmer of hope. I'm sure she's been there for years (I'm guessing) but she really should get with it. It's a turn-off. The Pizza.. .it really deserves five stars. I could not understand the one negative review I saw from the woman stating that the sauce was bland and that it was greasy. I tend to find most pizza is usually greasy in this arena. So, yes, there is a little but not like Connie's. The pizza is flavorful and they are very good with the toppings. I am always satisfied with my pizza (even the one time when the delivery guy apparently must have dropped it as slices were pushed to the side)... it was still damn good. This pizza beats Connies and even Ricobene's pan crust treat. Since they moved to 35th street (a plus regardless of any other reviews you have read). Honestly, I can't think of ordering from anywhere else. Now, if Phil's were outside of Bridgeport, I would still order. Jen N., is way off. This pizza is fantastic! I stumbled upon Phil's Pizza when I was Yelping for Bridgeport pizzerias. I decided to give it a try after seeing so many 5-star ratings but it didn't quite live up to the hype. Phil's jumbo sausage and mushroom pizza is $24.80. It is cheaper than most Bridgeport pizzerias and has a good serving size for six people. (Jumbo is 17 inches, by the way.) The pizza was loaded with large chunks of sausages and mushrooms and topped with a thick layer of mozzarella. But the crust was lacking in texture and it barely had a crunch. The sauce was thick but not well-spread. The center of the pizza almost seemed sauce-barren. I also didn't like how the take-out pizza wasn't stored in a box. P.S. We received a complimentary 2-liter Sierra Mist for our order and they DO NOT accept credit cards. read more

Unfortunately I was disappointed. Was expecting to like it more since they do so much business. I ordered a small thin crust, spinach, EASY cheese WELL done. The spinach and sauce was good, but there was a LOT of cheese and the pizza was not well done - if the slices are floppy, that is not well done, sorry. I will give them another try sometime, but make sure they make it weel done! I did order a side of meatballs, those were EXCELLENT! Quality ingredients - no grizzle, much like mine with ground round veal and a bit of pork. Phil's pizza is honestly a great place to get pizza. It is inexpensive and for the largest pizza, you get a liter of soda. I've had their sausage pizza and pepperoni pizza and they are one of the best! When you get pepperoni or sausage pizza from other places, you can't really taste the meat. You know it's there and you're chewing on it but you can't taste it--it's bland. Phil's is complete opposite. The meat has great flavor. The size of it is generous. They're just really good with their toppings. You have to order pizza from here for parties or for a night in or when you got the munchies. It's a no gimmicks no frills kinda place. read more

1st time experience & they dropped the ball. I ordered a small sausage/mushrooms extra sauce & well done. Simple right? HA!!! I get there and they give me a sausage pizza no xtra sauce & no mushrooms. I tell the cashier she says she didn't charge me for the mushrooms. So I ask why is my pizza $15.50? So this is one of the best "around the way" pizza joints in Chicago, and when I say that, I know what I'm saying - I LOVE pizza. Staff is always friendly but not phony friendly, and the pizza is CONSISTENTLY on-spot & filling. I don't know where they get the flavor, but it's dead on Chi-town pizza style. And the rest of the menu is no different. I LOVE their Italian beef combo, sheesh, it's oven baked to perfection! So if you're looking for something not corporatized & tastes like a franchise meal, you really need to hit this spot. Phil's is on my way home and I stop here WAY too often for pizza. I can't quite put my finger on it but this place is just so good! I usually get a jumbo (17") sausage pizza for $28 and it comes with a 2 liter! I usually like cheese or pepperoni but the pepperoni is kinda light and doesn't add much. The sausage has a ton of flavor and is always cooked really well. The wait is usually ~35 minutes and they're usually spot on with the timing. I did recently come on a Friday and it was PACKED with a solid 20 people waiting for pizzas and most of the tables crowded so it took a bit longer for the pizza. But this was an isolated incident and it's Friday night, so I expected it to be super crowded. I'm sure I'll keep coming back here!! read more
