TLDR: Pretty disappointing experience at Philz compared to other locations. Lack of a physical menu board and cold service were my biggest disappointments. Prime location right next to the Ferry Building and BART Drinks: We got the Mint Mojito (less sweet, normal cream) and the Philtered Soul (normal sweet, normal cream). I think this location tastes pretty similar to what we've experienced in other Philz. The mint and hazelnut flavors were very present but I do wish there was a greater coffee flavor specifically in the Mint Mojito Service/Ambiance: As someone who doesn't drink Philz often (I don't live in CA), I don't know the menu off the top of my head. This location didn't have any menus available until you got to the register. I stood around a bit looking through the online menu trying to figure out what I wanted. Once I got to the register and was trying to order the barista seemed cold and a little unfriendly. Attending an event around the corner in a restaurant on a Sunday, I learned that hot coffee was not available there. My uncle requested this so I figured that, being in the Embarcadero Center 4, it wouldn't be difficult to find but it was Sunday. Seeing a young gentleman as we crossed paths on the crosswalk, I asked him where he got the coffee in his hand and how far it is. He told me that it's a good walk and thought there might be a competitor closer. A light bulb lit above my head and I Yelped it in finding this is the closest option. When I reached one of two entrances, I was glad they were open with five or six customers enjoying their beverages or waiting for their orders. I have enjoyed Philz from various locations, such as Walnut Creek and Cupertino, so I know I was expecting a good drink. Iced Mint Mojito: One of my go to drinks. Been going to their og 24th location and many others and one that that stands out is the consistency in quality and service. Finally tried Philz after half a year of living in SF and it didn't disappoint! I tried the Luca's Unplugged Decaf with oat milk and light honey, and it was really nicely creamy with a light touch of sweetness. The coffee isn't too bitter either and tastes high quality. So comforting on a cold day! I really like how foamy their drinks are. Wish they had more decaf options though!! My friend got their famous mint mojito and I tried a bit -- it was really good!! I'm a regular at Philz. I usually use the app to order but Today I ordered in person at the Embarcadero location. The person at cashier very nice. The girl barista however had a major attitude for no reason. It was decently busy my drink was made faster than expected. I'm sitting across from her with active listening headphones (for my tism btw bc I feel the need to have to share this) so I can hear as if I'm not wearing them... She soft spoken said my one syllable name. I double check and ask what the name was she said? So she repeats it. Then proceeds to talk to the guy coworker loudly about how she had to repeat the name and if I wasn't wearing the headphones I could hear. How they hate customers like that and talk more about other past customers that get on their nerves... Are you serious???? Philz employees people like this?? This spot was right by the hotel I stayed in and makes a pretty good cup of coffee. I was a bit surprised that it took a while for a cup of black coffee, but overall I liked it here. It looks a bit old school, like a spot you'd find in New York. If you walk in, know you're competing against a host of online orders that'll back up any good coffee shop during the morning rush. I can't say for certain, but I think they make each batch of coffee on a smaller scale, because I didn't see the traditional large coffee pots. That probably makes it a quality over quantity strategy, which is you allow for time is a good thing. This isn't Philz specific, moreso a comment on late stage capitalism, but it's a bit of a sticker shock to pay $6-$7 for a simple cup of coffee. Alas, these are the times. But when I returned to verify that it was non-fat milk they used, the guy, dark hair parted down the middle, was very aggravated. When I asked him, are you sure this was nonfat? He said with a very snotty voice, yet non-fat. At this price a customer is allowed to demand goldstar service even for a simple cup of coffee. I tend to visit this location frequently out of convenience and mostly get the chai tea and something light to eat. When I'm feeling adventurous, I'll have one of their sweet coffee drinks, which are pleasant enough. The chai tea isn't what you would typically find at most cafes and is far from authentic, but it's a nice drink in its own way. The baked goods are always tasty and I find that they have some of the best almond croissants. Though I usually go for the quiche or avocado toast to get me through the morning. Before the pandemic, for many years, Philz was my go-to choice for a coffee chat with a co-worker. Because the long process was conducive to catching up. However, with about a 2 year gap from when I last went here, seems like they've gotten much more efficient. One dedicated person to answer questions and take orders while multiple baristas are working through the orders. Still not Starbucks fast, but definitely faster than old times. Though if use the mobile ordering app, it's literally in and out, so do that if you're seeking ultra efficiency and no human interactions. Tantalizing Turkish: Usually my go-to at Philz. Love the dark roast against medium sugar and medium cream. And that mint, what a nice fresh burst against the strong coffee. Fresh herbs in coffee should really be normalized. Such a fun pick me up during a day at the office. Iced Coffee Rosé: Something a little different, which I've never seen at any of the big chains. An iced coffee with a nice floral rose flavoring. Kinda like those yummy Middle Eastern desserts, but in your morning brew. It wouldn't be my regular, but it's nice from time to time. Asiago Bagel w/ Cream Cheese: A rather puny bagel and not much asiago cheese on top. And the cream cheese comes in a packet, like you'd get in a airline economy class breakfast. With so much effort put in their coffee, it's a shame it feels they're slacking on their bagels. Philz Plant-Powered Sandwich: But I am impressed with this breakfast choice, way better than their bagels. This one par with a Sausage, Egg and Cheese McMuffin. I can't believe everything in this is fake animal product. I mean the folded egg at McDonald's doesn't exactly taste like a real egg, so that's the most believable fake out. The sausage has the same pork texture and taste as real pork, so I'm impressed. And the cheese is like a melted American slice, which is also impressive since usually fake cheese is nasty. So when you're faced with a barista who has no patience and talks to me like I'm wasting her time, it could get pretty annoying.
