I am a huge fan and picky Pho eater. As an Asian-American, I love seeing food places stay authentic while appealing to a broader audience. They have more authentic options for fanatics and milder options (more Americanized) for people who aren't used to the food. The customer services great! She is super nice and tries hard to reply with her best English. The only problem is the area, but I live in the area. It's not the best but this place is a nice break from it all. Easily a contender for the best pho in Albuquerque. When you walk in you're greeted by one of the family members telling you to take a seat where ever you like while the TV plays Vietnamese reality TV. The menu is large and you might need some guidance. I personally like the "48 like a 38" as was suggested by the owner. It's 38 is spicy broth while replacing it with the meats from a 48 - rare brisket and well done flank. The spring rolls are really good and the peanut sauce that comes with has a great consistency, just thick enough to coat the roll. You pho comes with the normal side plate of sprouts, limes, and jalapeños but a nice touch that's different than other places is that it also includes thai basil (instead of cilantro) which has a subtle sweet black licorice taste and pairs great with the spice of the pho. read more

My daughter and I really enjoyed this food. I ordered a brisket and flank steak pho and my daughter ordered crispy whole catfish with ginger sauce. The food was delicious and the catfish was crispy and tender. Let me begin by saying I've eaten a lot of pho in my life and by far this place has some of the best broth so rich and tasteful.

Not THE #1 pho I've ever had. But I have nothing bad to say about it. Just glad we found it in a small city in the middle of the desert. While in the Albuquerque area as a stop for the night of our road trip on Labor day 2017, we were looking for Vietnamese food. We 1st went to the one down the road. Phok every other pho place. I've tried maybe 5-6 other places in ABQ, and I keep coming here. I love it. What else can I say? Extremely family friendly. I got to watch my friend breast feed her baby and navigate chopsticks at the same time. I laughed. The family that runs it has lots of kids that do homework here and like to watch cartoon network sometimes (for those of you who get tired of all Vietnamese all the time programming)... I don't even have a family, I usually hate kids in restaurants being loud so much, but here, it works. From what I can tell firefighters, cops, and other people from base love it too, since I see them all the time at lunch. Everyone loves pho. It's make it yourself soup I mean whats not to love? What to get... what to get....... The pho ga (chicken) is delicious, for appetizers I've just become boring and predictable and always get spring rolls, they're so good. The iced Vietnamese coffee is a good alternative for all the Thai iced tea lovers. Pho bo (beef) soups? I recommend #47. Bun is especially delicious. I hear the Chinese side of the menu is ok, but I'm more than happy staying in Vietnam! If I had to find a fault, it would be the noodles, they're under-cooked (sometimes), just enough to notice, but it doesn't bug me too much. Let them cook for a min more in your hot soup. This is some of the best Vietnamese I've had. They have a 7 course beef menu which I have never had, but heard rave reviews about. Their grilled pork and shrimp bowls are excellent. They also bring fresh jalapenos, sprouts, cucumbers, cilantro, mint, and thinly sliced apples to your table along with fresh noodles. I would have given this place 5 stars if not for the ambiance, the lack of it. But I suppose the whole in the wall type places serve the best food. read more

My husband and I have a vacation home in Cochiti Lake, NM. Yesterday I decided to Yelp Albuquerque restaurants and was excited to see a Pho restaurant! Who knew? We live in Portland, Oregon which is known for their Pho and I have to admit, this is better. I ordered the Pho Ga my husband tried the jasmine rice with lemongrass chicken. Both were amazing. We kept eating off each other's plates because the flavors were so intense. In fact, those two dishes really compliment each other. The thing that impressed me the most? We went there on a Monday at around 3:30. Clearly the slowest time. The owner greeted us. The kids were in there and were so sweet and pitched in to help. We felt like part of the family rather than an intrusion. Wonderful experience. We will be back! read more

I hail from San Francisco but occasionally I drop into ABQ for a few days and desperately try to find really good food. Green Chile doesn't count ABQ, sorry; it's a condiment not a food although you all try to push it as food or sometimes as meal So I yelped (is that a verb now) and lo and behold you wonderful diners gave me a path to tummy enlightenment. All i can say is.De-Lic-ous. I had #38 Lemongrass Pho and my friends all Vermicelli and Pork oh my goodness, fall to me knees and thank the lord for good food. Good food at decent prices. I grew up near San Jose, CA and lived in Los Angeles, CA where amazing/authentic Vietnamese restaurants are plentiful. After living in ABQ for a few months, the two Vietnamese places I've been to are Pho Saigon and Pho #1. Between the two, I choose Pho #1. The broth is spot-on, the noodles are good (although I do agree with some of the other reviews in that they could be cooked a tad bit longer). I usually get the tai pho (rare steak) and it always comes with a good amount of meat. A large bowl of tai pho will run a little under $7! The lady that works there has always been super nice every time we've eaten there. All-in-all: Great food. Great prices. Great customer service. Will be coming back for more! read more

This is a great little mom and pop Vietnamese restaurant. Between a friend and I we ordered a BBQ Pork Bun, a Lemongrass Tofu Bun, and vegetarian spring rolls which were all yummy. The lettuce and veggies in the BBQ Pork Bun were verry fresh and crisp, not wilted like I've experienced at other places in town. I don't know if I would classify their Pho is either authentic or good? Growing up eating Pho, I think their Pho is just simply not good. It's just not right, my maw tried it and she said she would not come back again. This is a default dinner place for several of my friends. We all love it. The menu, like all the Vietnamese restaurants I've been to, is expansive and I've only scratched the surface. However the four or five dishes I usually get are very good. I enjoy their bbq pork and pho ga. The owner is the waitress/hostess. She might be the most gracious and sweet business proprietor in the whole city, we all find her charming. It's not a fancy place, just a pho house. The owners family children are often there watching Vietnamese TV, it's all very homey. Sunday's they are often packed, but most evenings only a few tables are full. read more

Pho #1 has the best lemongrass chicken you will ever have any where!! I have researched extensively in multiple countries.....Seriously....Now, don't go here and get something else, not because it isn't good, but because nothing can compare with the Lemongrass Chicken! Also, the Pho here is not "#1" as the name would have you believe. It actually isn't even in the top 10 in Albuquerque. It is bland. Get the lemongrass chicken!! I usually get the plate with Vermicelli, but it is also awesome in the bowl! Seriously, don't get distracted by the extensive menu....get the lemongrass chicken!!!! I feel weird giving such a good restaurant 3 stars, but competition is pretty fierce around here and there's some damn good pho 'round these parts. I think Pho #1 is indeed A-OK. This place might have been a little too authentic for me. I just felt like I couldn't communicate very effectively in english because I couldn't really tell if they understood what I wanted and then I smiled and paid and waited and took my order home to find out that no, they didn't get a word I was saying. This is partially my fault, I was trying to get the combo pho but with pork instead of tripe and was off-menu. I had a combo pho. Which was full of all kinds of beefy goodness. Including a few surprises. The broth was great, needed little condiment. Came with the standard veggies on top. I had a tofu stir fry. I didn't like the flavor so much. A little elevated on the garlic and fish sauce. I thought the veggies had a bit of a stale tannic taste. Not bad, not the best. I did enjoy the food, I usually don't seek out tripe, but "when in Viet Nam...". Unfortunately by the time it came out my friends had to go back to work so I wound up with three meals all to myself and I was charged for four meals. That's what happens when you don't communicate well. That's alright, I'm not upset at all because the owners were really nice. Albuquerque, ABQ, Abba cadabra! Whatevers! Q: How do you find somewhere to eat in a foreign city??? A: Go to Yelp! Pho #1 had a number of well deserved reviews. I really think it is because of the mama-san there. She is a lovely hostess. The young sons all pitched in, Friday night and Saturday night. Dad is the cook, and mama-san is so grateful to everyone who comes in. She makes sure that the water glasses are filled. There is never an argument with the customers. She knows how to handle any situation with class. The decor is so-so, the portions are pretty big, and the flavors are not the best I've ever had, but this place is still up near the top. More like Pho #2 The place was a little stinky, sort of a sweet stench mildly drifting with the flies through the air. The waitress picked a few crumbs off the table with her fingernail and we were sat. After ordering number #82 and #117 we awaited our Soda Chan and Vietnamese Coffee. The Soda Chan came and it was WAY TOO SWEET, my partner had to use his water to cut the sweetness. My Vietnamese coffee wasn't brought in the make your own from scratch with a little press and side of condensed milk tradition that we all love-it was pre-made and again WAY TOO SWEET. We were brought a plate of fried spring rolls by a 10 year old boy, I assume he was part of the family business. He just plunked them down, and walked away. I thought perhaps they were complementary and sunk my chopstick into the sauce. My partner said "I don't think those are for us, stop touching them." We flagged down the boy and told them we didn't order them, and he took the rolls and brought them to another table. Oops. When our food arrived it was not very fresh tasting. The pork was greasy, and the veggies had obviously come out of a freezer bag. The flavors just weren't that good. I have to say that the food at Cafe De Lat down the road on Central tastes ten times fresher than the ingredients here at Pho #1. Granted we didn't try the Pho because it was 90 degrees outside, so maybe that's this establishments saving grace. I felt sort of duped by other's reviews of this spot, and felt compelled to write this..as there is a red sticker on the door of Pho #1 that states "People on YELP love us!" This food has healing power. If you've never had Vietnamese food, start with the #37 (Pho Dac Biet) or the #38 (Pho Sate Dac Biet). The former is mild, the latter's a little bit spicy, with ground peanuts thrown in for good measure. Both are otherwise, basically, an identical noodle soup in beef broth, with more kinds of beef than you can shake a stick at. If you're leery of tendon or tripe, just ask Lili (the lady who runs the front of the house) for "no tendon, no tripe". She won't be offended, and you won't be disappointed. Everything else on the menu I've tried is excellent -- but believe me -- you'll keep coming back for the Pho, if only for the broth. Chiang (sp?), the chef, simmers 60 pounds of bones and 40 pounds of meat for 24 hours to make each day's broth, which is the base for the Pho. Most other Vietnamese restaurants try to get by on fast-boiling the broth for as few as four hours. Eat around a bit and you can *definitely* tell the difference. Pho #1's broth is second to none. The sheer depth of flavour in the broth alone makes it worth coming back for. And even though their broth-less dishes are quite fine, you *will* be craving for the Pho after a few days, if not sooner. Speaking of broth-less offerings, the Vermicelli bowls are all superb. And -- I never *dreamed* that fried rice could be so delicious and fulfilling in and of itself. But it can be a meal, just by itself, here. And if you want something with broth, but don't want beef, you might just try one of the restaurant's seafood offerings. Fair warning: the sole cost-cutting measure at this restaurant appears to be the use of imitation crabmeat in these. If that disturbs your sensibilities, by all means order your seafood soup without it -- it won't suffer. The base in which the seafood soups are served is a garlic-rich chicken broth which could likely cure serious viral infections. The Seven Courses of Beef is a dining experience best enjoyed with someone else. For the first course, you're brought out a delicately scented bowl of almost-boiling water with pineapple and onions in it. In this, you cook the paper-thin slices of raw beef which you'll go on to incorporate into your own spring rolls. Subsequent courses involve a grill that you coat with fresh butter prior to cooking those courses of beef. But -- for the money -- the Pho *can't* be beat. For dessert, I strongly recommend the avocado shake. Yes, avocado. Everyone I take to this restaurant for the first time is afraid of the idea, but I haven't yet failed to convert anyone to the glory of the avocado shake. It's utterly divine. The other shakes I've tried are good, as well, but again -- I *always* go back to the avocado. Fair warning -- this is a *family* restaurant. What that means, in this case, is that if you visit in the late afternoon or evening, the kids of the family who run the place will be there. The older ones help out with keeping water glasses filled and such, but if you're totally averse to one kid in the "terrible twos", you might be well advised to either visit during lunch hours on a weekday, or else learn to entertain the youngster just a bit. Finally -- Lili never hesitates or balks at splitting a bill between diners, whether that means splitting it down the middle or separating individual items. The service here can be a *little* on the slow side when it's busy, just 'cause it's mostly her, up front. But she absolutely *loves* your business, and it shows in every fibre of her being. read more

I have had the pho many times and the broth, sprouts and basil leaves are always fresh, pure goodness to warm your tummy on cold day. I love the lemon grass beef and lemon grass chicken! We also have had the bun which is very fresh and delicious. The spring rolls are inexpensive and fresh. Pho here is authentic solid 4 stars. I didn't think going into a Vietnamese establishment in ABQ, New Mexico would be anything better than mediocre but I have mistaken. Food was great and soup base was up to par to my pho standards. Cha Gio needs work. look more like Chinese egg rolls in size and texture. Filling needs revisions as well as the prized viet fish sauce that usually accommodates the Cha Gio. Can't say anything about the rest of the menu like rice vermicelli and BBQ pork chops as I didn't order it but overall cleanliness of the restaurant and presentation was a solid 4 star as well. I ended up in this place when I discovered that Lindo Mexico (next door - see my review) is not open for dinner. I'm a foodie, so what is most important to me is the food. This place has good quality meals at ridiculously low prices. I got completely stuffed on beef Pho for the huge price of $6.50. The taste was fresh and hearty and the quality excellent. It was alright. The quantity was decent but the price was a little expensive for the quality of the food. My family and I went on a Saturday night during prime dinner hour (6-7PM) and there was no customers at all. The hostess/owner was attentive because we were the only customers there. On yelp, we had read the pho was delicious so my family and I ordered the chicken seafood combo noodle and beef pho (#37 and #38). They were pretty decent but I have had better pho in other places.
