Ok I live in Chinatown...I love Pho...I've driven by Pho 87 everyday for years now. This was a lesson in NOT letting the outside appearance of a place scare me off. The building is not much to look at. THe door to Pho 87 makes me think of a jail...Not that I've ever been to jail. I expected dingy, grimmy, yuckies inside. THanks to reviews on Yelp I broke down & went for lunch one weekend. Thank You Yelpers!!!! The inside is clean and bright...not at all what I imagined. This is one of the better places for Pho...yummy yummy yummy!! The broth is so full of flavor with nice tender pieces of beef...crisp bean sprouts..The bowls come in 3 sizes and the portions are good. I ordered the small & still had some left over. The spring rolls are also really good...nice big pieces of shrimp and pork. If you like Pho I would def recommend you go try Pho 87!! read more

I have a theory that Vietnamese people must drink a lot, because they invented Pho....the world's greatest hangover food. 90% of my Pho 87 experience is after waking up on a Saturday or Sunday after having had one too many the night before. I've tried a half dozen other pho restaurants, but I always find myself back at Pho 87. The decor is mediocre, but the soup and imperial egg rolls are delicious. I prefer the pork and wonton or any of the various beef blends. Even though I am an infrequent guest, the manager always remembers me and is extremely friendly. The service is lightning fast....better to cure that hangover in a hurry. I've tried the rest, Pho 87 is consistently the best. My only complaint is that they close so early (8:45 PM,) forcing me to fulfill my late night pho urges elsewhere. But the next morning, they'll always be there for me..... read more

Being Vietnamese and raised in Orange County, I have had my fair share of Pho. If you are expecting this place to be like Little Saigon in Westminster, I think this place might be the closest you will get around Downtown Los Angeles. There seems to be two different types of Pho in LA. Places that are owned by Koreans or Vietnamese. Let me tell you, there IS a difference. Imma generalize, but Koreans prefer the pho a bit sweeter and broth seems not to be beefy. And something about dousing siracha on that separate plate of marinated onions baffles me. Vietnamese pho tends to taste more oniony and more beefy. After visiting several Pho places in K-Town and Chinatown, I think I finally found my spot.... to the point where I've created an account on yelp to write a review! Pho is good based off the broth. The broth here is a bit inconsistent like many has said, but it's good most of the time. The meat is plentiful (which is rare because most places pile on the noodles) and they have the Garlic Chili sauce I LOVE. It's what you use to dip bo vien (meatballs) with. Seriously no restaurant has had it except this place. The Bun Bo Hue is ALRIGHT. It was a bit watery for my liking and not spicy enough. The Com Thit Nguong is good. The meat, rice, and shredded pork was fine, better than most restaurants in LA. Don't get the cha though, that was nasty. Bi Cuon (shreaded pork spring roll) was a big flavorless. I felt like I couldn't taste the shredded pork at all. The fish sauce is a bit sweeter than I expected. The normal shrimp spring rolls was really good. It consisted of both grilled pork and shrimp, something I haven't ran into too often in LA. All in all... you want Vietnamese pho, this is the closest you'll get. Looking in k-town, Pho 36 is good. For the OC natives, I'd compare this place to Pho 79, but like it's little son who still learning. Cash only! read more

The family run restaurant has been doing this for nearly 30 years (I believe) and have successfully built a loyal customer base (myself included.) The reason for their success is that they've remained consistent doing what they do best- churning out great bowls of pho. I been here many times and never have problems with my orders. And because of their much "deserved success"- in recent years the business has increased their prices, for example a large combination bowl- will run you a whopping $9.95; a bit high considering facilities and location. Unfortunately, for this reason I don't go as often as I used to but this is still my "go to" place for pho. These people definitely know their pho. What I like about is the cleanliness and decor. They have a very cool indoor koi pond inside. I also like that you can order pho in 3 different sized bowls: small, medium, and large. It's great if you don't want that sloshy feel when you get up from the table after have guzzled down 3 cups worth of broth and noodles. It's also great because you have room for appetizers, which is why this place got the 5 stars. First of all, flavor is great, it's authentic, and if you want more veggies for your soup, they bring it right to you. Service is fast and friendly. Appetizers are fun, yes fun. I love food that you get to "interact" with. We ordered an appetizer that came with noodles, slices of beef, with egg rolls on a bed of lettuce garnished with herbs. We learned you have to stack it up on your lettuce like tabouli and roll it up like a taco--gotta love it--and sure enough it was. Can't decide which I liked better, the pho or the appetizer plate, so I just keep going back for both. There's a great mix of locals and regulars, so you're never alone and just about everyone there shares your appreciation for this comfort food, so it's easy to strike up a conversation with fellow diners. Everything about it is great except for parking. It's Chinatown, so what do you expect. It's also slightly off the strip so there's no touristy vibe, just you and the regulars. Gotta try it, but if it ever gets too crazy, there's also Pho Broadway a few blocks down with free parking in the strip mall (and there's always parking because it's the only business open after hours). Smaller place, larger bowl, and sweet staff. My friend and I go to both places. Just a matter of whichever is more convenient or which kind of ambiance we're looking for. Came here at 10AM on a Saturday morning after a night of bar hopping. Needless to say, we were all a little hungover. Small hole in the wall place on the edge of Chinatown. There's a small parking lot and it's a very no frills place. Servers aren't super attentive but your food comes out fast and portions are HUGE. Definitely get enough food for your monies. read more

I stumbled upon this place when I moved to LA about 15 years ago when chinatown was an abandoned & desolate dystopian wasteland. It was my first experience with pho and vietnamese cuisine & I'm pleased to say it is still one of the best and most reasonable pho experiences that you can find in the LA area. It's also a very low-profile place where you can enjoy a casual, quiet, no-frills, delicious, & satisfying hot meal. This is not lukewarm 'hipster-pho'. On our drive back to San Jose, my daughter reminded us that she was hungry again, so we decided to just get off on the next exit and Yelp a pho place nearby. Pho 87 came up and we headed over. The restaurant's exterior & surroundings really isn't anything to talk about and I would call it more of a hole-in-the-wall joint, but oh mah gawd...the pho was probably the best I have ever tasted! Like another review said, this is the gold standard for pho. I love me a good bowl of pho any day and this is the only place I crave. No other place has the consistently good broth. But the thing you have to try is the shrimp spring rolls. Sure, it's not heavy on the shrimp but that dipping sauce is the best I've ever had. I've tried spring roll dipping sauces elsewhere and none come close to this place. Sure, the crunchy fried rolls are good too but their spring rolls stand out. MMMM bomb.com pho!! Brother took the boyfie and I here on Sunday after an intense night of drinking. Although it was a less than 10 min drive from his place, I barely made it alive. Aging + alcohol is not a good combo... Anyway, it was PACKED at 11am, but we were able to get seats quickly. Our order came out within 10 mins which was GREAT because I was half alive at that point. The chicken pho was FAB! Super clean and not oily like half the pho joints out there. The spring rolls were super yummy and the peanut sauce it came with was so different from all the other places I've tried. Love how you have the choice of three sizes: Small, Medium, or Large. This place is located a little above (on my map, although I am directionally challenged...) Chinatown in LA. A little off the "well beaten" path but many people go there. I have eaten here many times. This is also where I discovered that delicious sliced onions with limes/lemons on it taste wonderful with PHO. Nice managment, I believe it is family owned, pretty attentive with water/hot tea re-fills. But there is something wrong with my large special bowl with every part of a cow in it. The soup always leaves a funky tang taste in my mouth. I've eaten pho my whole life (I remember my first time with my dad after he picked me up from kindergarden in a pepto bismol pink walled pho shop... awwwww) and never had that. I endured it because it was close to home and my BF frequents the place. But now we don't go there because theres a place on Spring St that is very small but has no funky taste. Oh, and their parking is iffy at best especially for a young asian girl... I'm so scared of hitting someone else. There is also an slightly abandoned sewing factory.... or what looks like one.... I came here for lunch yesterday with my friend yesterday and all could think was "why didn't I know about this place sooner??" I spent all of my college years getting pho in K-town because I thought that was the best I could do in downtown. Why didn't I explore more? It is located in the north part of Chinatown and it is pretty easy to miss the entrance to the parking so keep an eye out for the gate. I ordered a small #11 for $6.95 (thin rare meat, tendon, and tripe) and it totally hit the spot. I wasn't terribly hungry and the food still tasted delicious. The broth tasted a lot more authentic than the k-town versions and I had tons of meat, tendon, and tripe. They were also very nice about giving me extra cilantro and green onions :D Something I greatly appreciate. The noodles were a good consistency too for all you Pho addicts. We went at pretty peak lunch time and found a spot pretty easily in the back lot. Also, and there was no wait for a table and service was really fast. When my friend couldn't finish her coke, they even gave her a to-go cup to take with her. I really enjoyed my experience and I anticipate coming back often in the future. *note* They are cash only but it is totally worth the trip to the atm read more

Short of going to Westminster or Garden Grove, this place is about as good as it gets for pho. Honestly, it's not spectacular, but it's pretty solid in all respects down to the grease on the tables and the proper spring rolls with proper amounts of vegetables to wrap them in. And the pho is definitely tasty in a solid, fresh (well, fresh enough!), delicious way. Plus it's priced right. Sure it's in the ghetto backside of Chinatown, but if that's what it takes, I'm good with that! read more

3.5 My second bowl of pho post a month in Vietnam. Vietnamese food has carved itself a soft spot in my heart with the balance of flavors and fresh herbs. I think it's what Filipino food could be with a little less frying and a lot more fresh greens and cilantro. It wasn't the best bowl of Pho I've had in So. Cal but for being much horter drive than Wesminster, Pho 87 you make me very happy. The Pho: Good broth without too much of the MSG headache. Go for the raw meats and the pho is piping hot My favourite: Bun Cha, actually the Vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, eggroll or the one with pork and shrimp. Served with lettuce (in the bowl) and a light sweet-salty fish sauce melee, you will be pleasantly pleasantly surprised Bun Cha in LA can taste this good. -1 Star because the restaurant atmosphere gave me a gloomy, creepy feeling while dining because of the lighting was really dim during the daytime around 4 pm -1 Star for the cleanliness. A couple of the tables were left dirty when the previous customer has already long left, and no waitress cleaning it up in a timely manner. -1 Star for the quality of the food, as it was crap. I ordered the item #15 and one of the meat was so chewy that I couldn't swallow it, the meat portion is skimped out as well as the mint veggies. I even ordered a large size which cost a whooping $10. Also the sam Bo long herbal drink is crappy, small portion of the herbs and the herb quality was awful, dry and bland. -1 star for no front desk staff to greet you and seat you down. I had to walk to the cashier to find a guy, who came out from the kitchen to seat me down. I guess I was unlucky on this visit. But definitely I won't come back for all these reasons. First impressions are utmost important and every restaurant needs to maintain good customer service from the beginning of the day till the end of the business day. when they decided to give a raise of price in food, their service quality will need to meet high expectation.
