I rarely leave reviews except when I'm thoroughly impressed or offended & I NEVER want to hurt someone's business, but in this case I feel health codes are consistently violated. I was excited to take my wife here for banh mi because that's her favorite & the Window decals said sandwiches & seafood in large letters so I was looking forward to that. Upon entering the 100% empty restaurant, the young man greeted us & we went straight to the restrooms to wash our hands & immediately I felt like I was in the restroom at a dive bar metal venue. The toilet has large lumps of drying feces stuck to it that WASN'T FRESH. The wall was covered in tiny dead fruit flies. Several hundred easily. The grimy, crusty garbage can was overflowing & couldn't shut properly. The hot water didn't work & the soap dispenser was empty. I haven't seen a restroom that bad in a long time. When we sat at our table I was looking at the window right next to us & noticing how covered it dripping grime. If the kitchens sanitation & sterilization practices are anything like the rest of the place then you should Definitely be fearful of Food borne illness. I regret not taking pictures. Ehh, one word to describe this place: Interesting. My sister and I are very alike and we both said "Interesting". From all the pho we ever had.. this one was definitely.. different i'd say. I don't know what it was but the aroma/scent was stronger? and more mintier? I had the Pho Tai (steak) and my sister had the Vegetable one. We also had two spring rolls:) The spring rolls were definitely great! Overall, it tasted alright:) Not bad at all. It was so cute because there was a little boy who served the water, took our order, and brought out our food! You don't get to see that everyday! I absolute love Pho Gia. All the food I've tried, from vermicelli to salad rolls, has been great, but the pho is truly exceptional and quite possibly my favorite in the city. Like many have said, the broth has an excellent depth of flavor and utilizes a variety of spices to give each bowl complexity. The lemongrass add-on for the veggie pho is definitely worth it. You get a strong burst of lemongrass flavor that adds even another layer to an amazing bowl of soup. The owner is lovely and has been running this inner SE business for a long time. Prices are super reasonable and the portions are good. If you haven't tried this Portland staple yet, you really need to do so! read more

Soup was good but I was charged more than posted price on menu of $12.00. I was charged $14.46 instead. The young kid working the register said it was a fee for using a card but this doesn't make sense as this is a 20% up charge. This was not posted on menu or signage either. The restaurant is a little far from downtown, but I got a car and my friend wanted to try Pho for the first time. She kind of like it, but I really liked it. I even ordered a second plate again. I gave them 2 stars based on the service and the food I ordered. Today, I came to the Pho Gia and ordered the Sauté Diced Beef (Togo) for $13.50, so I gave them $14 and plan to tip $2 more after I receive my food but the cashier just took a look of my money then put them in the cash drawer without say anything (I said "Hi" to her in Vietnamese when I came in). I said to myself "you just saved me $1.50" then sat down at the table next to the door. 5 minutes later they brought the food out to me and said "thank you" with the straight face, I took the food and left. Got home, opened up the Togo box and realized that I just got ripped off (with just a little of meat, the rest is just fat). I am OK if the food taste good, but it's opposite: the beef is dry and hard, the ingredients is so wrong, not for Sauté Diced Beef. Will not come back! read more

Phosalm 23:4 Yep, Pho has become my go-to food when I'm feeling crappy (whether self-inflicted or as a casualty of co-workers competing over who can go the longest without using a sick-day). You'd think this would've operant conditioned me to feel like crap at the thought of Pho, NOT SO. I am no Phocking expert, but my roommate purports to be and he says this is the best Pho he's ever had. My exposure to pho is pretty much this place and Pho Hung and I think they're both great. I mainly come here because it's pretty close to me. The number of ways they have managed to mix-and-match beef here is incredible. Beef tripe? Beef Brisket? Beef Tendon? Ribeye Beef? I like that. Oh, and the prices are CHEAP. $6.50 for a filling lunch? Heck yes. Great place to eat in this winter we're about to enter, or if you're feeling ill, or if you think you *are* the Pho King. read more

Once upon a time, 2 children rang me up. Yes, you read that correctly. Three things about that: 1) I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Is it like working monkeys? They don't know any better? 2) It's definitely not legal. 3) Still, they were badass, and are certainly future math champs. Their pho is very good. I'm a huge appetizer person, but as far as entrees go I've also had their lemongrass chicken and pad thai with shrimp and tofu. All are good. The only thing I've questioned is how long it takes for pho sometimes. It's a prime lunch spot for me, especially during fall/winter. But I feel like pho should take less than 30 minutes to order, receive, eat, and pay for. Amirite? I don't like pho with chewy meat, and all of their meats have been tender. I'm not going to argue about the "authenticity" of this place like a lot of other people do. If I wanted authenticity, I would fly to Vietnam and eat there. I am, however, going to write about good food. Pho Gia is good. Damn good. When you first walk into this restaurant, it appears to be very different from the typical Vietnamese restaurant here in town. It's VERY clean, the plates are nice, and they play classical music. Most of the good Pho places are dirty, have mismatched tableware, and usually play some sort of southeast asian music that sounds like it comes from the days when synthesizers first became popular. With a restaurant this nice looking, you'd expect the prices to be moderately pricy, but that is definitely not the case. A bowl of pho will set you back about $6-7, and the portions are very generous. Furthermore, the ingredients are much fresher than any other pho joint I've been to, and the broth is quite spectacular. I've had several dishes here, but some do stand out more than others. My most frequented dish is surprisingly the vegetarian bowl of pho. Vegetarian pho may sound like an oxymoron, and it may not be "authentic", but I don't care because it's effing delicious. The broth is sweeter than normal, but is flavored with some combination of delicious, savory spices and it has a generous amount of mushrooms, green beans, bell peppers, onions and tofu. I also really enjoy the spring rolls here more than other places. They aren't the typical "everything but the kitchen sink" style, but they only have 3 quality, flavorful ingredients and the sauce is the perfect combination of peanut and hoisin. SUPERB. I really want to give this place 5 stars because it is one of my favorites in town, but I had to dock it a star because of the service. This is pretty typical of a lot of Vietnamese joints, but they really need to start checking back to each table periodically. Went to Pho Gia strictly on the basis of strong positive Yelp* trending over the last few months and was pleasantly surprised. I love pho and have been trying to find the Portland equivalent to Phoung Trang's (in San Diego, CA) pho ga since I moved here from Southern California in 2005. I am happy to report I have found that place in Pho Gia for four solid reasons. First the owner, Peter, is a gentleman and an outstanding chef recently relocated from Saigon to PDX. I felt comfortable upon entering the restaurant and engaged in easy and lively conversation with he and others there. The place is nicely appointed and a features a decent sound system that plays the European "light classics" (similar to Comcast's "Light Classical" channel) adding to a wonderful and non-pretentious ambience great for solo dining, family dining, and even dating. Pho Gia earns major points for ambiance, the absence of "attitude", and kindness and is very much the "anti-Pearl" restaurant which earns even more points! Finally, he told me that he cooks his food from the heart and I'm all for more love in this world....I actually tasted that love and care in this wonderful meal. Second, my standard order is pho ga with a vegetarian spring roll as an appetizer. The Pho Gia version might be the very best spring roll I've ever eaten! A single strip of lightly braised tofu is wrapped in a thin but sturdy rice paper stuffed with sprouts and other vegetables. The braising the roll mad it slightly crispy and the peanut sauce supplied for dipping was flavorful and mild. They cut the rolls into quarters which are of decent size. Easy to savor and a wonderful way to begin. Third, the presentation and aroma!!!!! Normally, I'm not a presentation kind-of-a-guy....but this was outstanding! Here is how the presentation experience started, about two bites into my third piece of spring roll, the soup was brought to my table and I could smell it 5 ft away as the server approached! A sweet scent that was a blend of the mint leaves, the broth and the noodles. Amazingly, I could not recall if the excellent Phoung Tran pho ga, which was heretofore the alpha and omega for me, carryied this wonderful aroma. Also, it looked great in the bowl with thin slices of chicken breast floating on the top with yellow and green onions and sparse sprinklings of pepper. Fourth, the broth!!!!! Absolutely amazing and as flavorful and tasty as it was aromatic. Unlike many of the other Vietnamese pho places in town, this one wasn't too salty and wasn't dominated by chili peppers and spices. It was a titillating experience for the taste buds that featured a balanced collage of flavors with just enough salt, the perfect amount of black pepper, and perfectly sliced succulent pieces of chicken breast on top of fresh and tender noodles. Yes, its healthy! They bring a plate full of very fresh condiments including cilantro, bean sprouts, mint leaves and lime....all of these drive the overall taste value of this marvelous broth to a full 10 out of 10. Fifth it is not expensive and is conveniently located along the Tri-Met #12 Sandy/Barbour bus line. I got away with a great meal and a generous tip for only $14!!! It is located across from EverdayMusic (EM) on Sandy and just after the Burnside-Sandy intersection. Given its proximity to EM it would be a great place to stop by after hunting in the bargain bins for your favorite obscure artist's work! Kudos to Peter and his crew!! They are to be complimented and I will return to this Pho Gia many times in the next few years! Hope that Yelpers make this part of their regular foodie rounds! read more

When one is presented with an unusually cold day, one thinks of ways to warm up. A comfy blanket, some coffee/tea or hot chocolate or a nice warm bowl of soup. I was thinking about the last one and a can of Chunky soup wasn't really what I was in the mood for this day. A nice steaming bowl of pho with lots of veggies and meat seemed to be the ideal choice. Any pho place I have ever been to, all you need is the small bowl because they give you a lot of food for a little money. Pho Gia is no different. I've walked past the place on many occasion but never went in. I have had a great deal of incredible food in my short time in Portland and a pho place was my first meal and my most current. I went after the lunch rush and before the dinner crowd started showing up so there were very few people in the place and I was able to get served quickly. I'm really not sure if they have a busy time but I know that more people should make their way here. I started off with the spring rolls with bbq pork and shrimp. They were filled with lots of crunchy goodness with cilantro, basil and many bean sprouts wrapped up in rice paper with a nice side of peanut sauce or I had the option of fish sauce. In the picture I posted they look quite small on that plate, but they were actually enough for an app. The pho showed up rather fast. I got #33 which was beef flank and brisket. The broth was tasty and even though it was good, I still had to add my sriracha. I'm addicted. There were lots of crunchy bean sprouts and jalapenos and plenty of meat getting nice and soft within that broth. So good, I might have been able to pull off a larger bowl. I want Pho Gia to be good, I really do. I live so close that it would be my go-to Pho place if the Pho was even average. Sadly, it's not. I'll start with the Pho. The broth may not be the best out there, but it's fine. The issue I take with the Pho was the lack of meat included. My bowl basically noodles in broth with a few chunks of meat. The flavor of everything is fine, but for the money, I'd like to see more substance. Other than the lacking Pho, the other food at Pho Gia is just fine. Pho Gia is so near our apartment, that I think we declared this restaurant our designated pho place. I came here twice already; once during a really cold winter night and once for a quick lunch. The first time i came here i ordered the bowl of Pho. I was really disappointed at the small bowl of pho. It had 4 pieces of sliced beef and it was submerged in the soup, and not freshly sliced raw pieces of beef. My bf and I are not big eaters but there wasn't a time where we weren't full after our bowl of pho; so sadly; right afterwards we had to order another entree to share because it just wasn't enough. The big bowl was not as big as we thought it would. Mind you, we also ordered two summer rolls before our pho too! The second time we came was for a quick lunch. Pho Gia has been around for a few years now. Why do they still have a grand opening sign out on the side of the building? Must be a long grand opening. Finally found some time to get over to get some to go food. There were a few people here on a Friday night. Actually more than I usually see inside when I'm walking or bussing by. I'm happy for them as the people working here (it seemed like a family and therefore probably the owners) were very friendly. It is the closest Pho to where I live and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get over here for the first time. First off the food that was coming out of the kitchen looked good. The menu here is pretty big, but since it says Pho right in the name of the restaurant Pho is what I ordered. Before that I had an order of Cha Gio (Crispy Rolls, $4 for 2) which had ground pork, shrimp, shredded taro, onions and carrots inside of them and were served with a sweet chili sauce. These were really good, but I wish there had been more than 2. For my main dish I had a large portion of the Pho Chin ($8) which consisted of broth along with beef brisket and meatballs. All Pho also comes with fresh bean sprouts, basil leaves and a lime wedge. When you take this to go they keep the broth separated. I took all this food home with me and dished it out. There definitely could have been a bit more meat. The meat that was there was good. The broth had a lot of flavor and they didn't skimp on the bean sprouts, basil or noodles. Where's the beef? It was there, but I'm thinking there could have been a bit more. It seems other reviewers agree with me. I like that this place is a short walk from my apartment and I would love to try some of their other specialties, but now I know where to get a pretty good bowl of broth for those rainy and cold spring days that we seem to be currently in the middle of. read more

Worst pad Thai I've ever had! Couldn't have more than a few bites because the flavor was so off, almost fishy. Shrimp salad rolls were okay.

My friends and I were in need of a hangover cure, so we searched 'viet food' and yelp mistakenly took us to Pok Pok. After walking in and looking at the menu, we quickly walked out in search of real vietnamese cuisine. We were so glad to find Pho Gia! The lady working there was a real delight. We got large combinations and made sure to spray plenty of sriracha and hoisin sauce and added some sliced chili in there. It was amazing. We're from the Bay so this place really felt like I was at home. My best friend got a matcha green tea smoothie and mentioned he could taste the matcha. I got a coconut juice and to my surprise our waitress came out with a real coconut with the top off. I'd love to come here again next time I'm in Portland. Bottom LIne - The pho here is okay. My wish list would include a more flavourful broth, and more fresh noodles. Friends and I came because we were craving pho in the Portland area and so we used Yelp to find this place. We arrived and there weren't that many people inside (just 2 other tables), so our food came pretty quickly. There were 4 of us, and we each ordered our own pho. I had pretty much everything in mine. I thought the tendons could have been a bit softer. The noodles might have been a little old because they were not soft (they were more hard and crumbly). This usually only happens to rice noodles if it's a day or so old. We also ordered the salt pepper fried calamari. The taste was good; however, I think it was deep fried and then stir-fried with veggies... the stri frying with veggies made the calamari way too oily and no longer crispy. If I order this again, I'd ask for it not to be stir-fried after deep frying. Next time, I'll try to find a better pho restaurant... perhaps one that ONLY serves pho. read more

Don't be discouraged by their none-Vietnamese offerings (burgers, pad Thai, Hot Dogs) and don't make the mistake of ordering them either, you'll be disappointed because they're pretty bad. But do order their pho, salad rolls, smoothies & bubble teas etc. they're terrific especially for the price. I've been coming here regularly for a few years, and their food seems to get better every year the more they focus on Vietnamese food. read more

This is probably the biggest let down of a pho meal I've ever had. My friend and I both ordered the #31 and added veggies. There were two slices of meat which was a let down and the broth was sub-par. The noodles were in a ball and the basil was wilted. It didn't help that the Titanic theme song and a Shania Twain song were both played 4/5 times each in our 25 minute visit. I always have to pass when my friends want to go have Pho because it's unlikely there's a veg option, other than a salad - and really, if everyone is having soup I want soup! The order wasn't completely correct, but it's the quality of the beef that killed it for me. The salad rolls were good and fresh, though! Service was friendly and quick. I love pho Gia. I live a few blocks away and order from them as often as I can. Pickup is very straight forward and a fast process. Everytime I show up for pickup I never have to wait. The workers are always very welcoming and happy to see you. Their pho broth, OMG best in town 100%. Their pho is definitely their specialty and they always have the best of the best meats. I have never had a bad experience with them and I hope more people will try their food. If I could pay their rent and cover whatever costs are needed to run a restaurant I would. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! There were tiny black flies in both my friend's and my soup. I have no idea how many we ate because they were quite small flies that looked like black seasoning bits. When my friend finished, she looked and pulled out the black bit and discovered it was a fly. Then she immediately looked in my bowl and we saw another floating in mine!!! We confronted the waiter, who barely said a word. He just took the spoon with the flies on it and walked away. He then came back with another spoon and set it on the table without saying anything and turned to walk away. I told him there was no way we were eating more because of the flies. He denied it all, even though we just showed him, saying there is no flies in our kitchen. We have never seen a single one. I told him we were not paying for this food, and he said something inaudible back. My friend then told him that this is not ok and that you cannot be serving food with flies in it. He said annoyed that we are not paying for it. To which, my friend responded and emphasized that is not the point, that this is unacceptable to be giving out this food to everyone with bugs in it. He tried to make it seem like we were making this up, despite showing him the spoon with the flies in it. We were blamed for this. He then walked away on us still talking to him. He never came back to our table. We never received a single apology. He nor the owner cared. They were still serving the soups to customers as we left. When we walked out of the restaurant, the owner and waiter gave us the nastiest look. They continued to look at us like this until we were past the restaurant windows. The owner waited until we were past the restaurant to coming running out of it to the sidewalk to start screaming and waving his hands crazily around. "Never come back to our restaurant again!!! We continued walking and did not hear the rest. My friend, being the person she is, was still going to pay if they actually acknowledged and apologized when we first showed the waiter the flies in our food. Later on, my friend became sick and vomited the whole thing up. I do not know how this restaurant is even allowed to be open, serving food with bugs in it. So, Pho Gia first meal in Portland and I waddled away full and content. We let the hostess know that we would be sitting outside and the server arrived soon after. Never did we feel neglected because we were out there. Our server was always attentive and the glasses stayed full. I ordered the #12, the bun com thit. I've felt a bit cheated at Vietnamese places in the past, but not here. For the price it was a surprising portion. I had so much noodle, bbq pork, shrimp, and veggies in the bowl that I had to tap out 3/4 of the way. If I live there, I'd definitely be a repeat visitor. read more
