This is the Large Bun Bo Hue at Pho Kien Giang for $9 and the Thai Tea for $2.50 in Pinellas Park, FL! Walking into this place felt like stepping into Dr. Who's Tardis (telephone booth time machine). It is in the middle of a run down, disheveled, sketchy plaza in the middle of a non-descript area of Pinellas. Step inside, and it is sparkling clean; adorned with pleasant decor, plenty of room, and the delicious smell of broth. When you are immediately noticed and kindly taken to your seat by the amazingly attentive host/busboy/janitor/sometimes-waiter, you'll be met with a massive intimidating menu full of names that a non-Asian person such as myself likely can not pronounce. Luckily, I have Yelp, and unlike most yelpers, I mainly use it to give me the tried and true food choices of an eatery. The overwhelming choice seemed to be the Bun Bo Hue and I am a sucker for Thai Tea, so the choice was obvious. The Bun Bo Hue is a rich spicy beef broth, and the flavor is as deep and complex as the color. Is it red? Is it brown? Was that green onion I just tasted, or was that fish sauce? Who knows? Who cares? It is immediately obvious that this broth has been simmering and releasing flavors from its ingredients for hours on end because it is impossible to get this kind of depth without that kind of patience and dedication. I could pick apart any flavors except "yum." Swimming inside, there were massive amounts of thin beef slices, a massive pork hock (foot), and perfectly cooked noodles (thicker than pho noodles). I elected not to get the blood cubes because I am a coward. They were more than glad to give me extra steak instead, which I found to be extremely accommodating. It was also incredible that for only about $1 more, you get a MASSIVE bowl of the stuff instead of an average human-sized bowl. Easily reheated take-away, anyone? Also notice the greens and sprouts in the back. You will never get crisper fresher greens than that. They must have been picked straight out of the farmers market that morning. It's incredibly hard to keep herbs like cilantro crisp and flavorful, but there it was, complimenting my dish the way only the freshest greens could. The sprouts added a fun crunch as well. The quality of greens wasn't a one-time thing either - I've been there for regular pho before and it was all just as fresh. The Thai tea was sweet. Very sweet. That's honestly how I like it, since it offsets the very savory soup, but some may not like how intensely sweet it is. Extremely creamy and rich. It was hard to pace myself, but for only $2.50, perhaps I could have afforded another glass. I may die from diabetic shock, but I'd die happy. I like my Thai tea, if you couldn't tell. The service was impeccable. I didn't catch his name, but the busboy/janitor/waiter literally RAN that floor. There wasn't anything he couldn't and wouldn't do for the diners. The cashier/manager also came by to greet us and inform us that bun bo hue has thicker noodles than the pho, and if we didn't like it, we could ask to substitute for the pho noodles instead next time. Again, incredibly and even unnecessarily accommodating. These guys made sure we knew that they wanted us happy every chance they got! After everything, my friend and I left fit to burst...and the total bill was only $23. Can you believe that? That wasn't a lunch special, that's just everyday reasonable pricing. I went up to the counter to pay, joked with the manager about the various ways I could mispronounce the first two words of the establishment's name, and went on my way a very happy man. All in all, I would give Pho Kien Giang an ecstatic 5 out of 5 quacks. Top notch Pho. Usually restaurants have either quality or quantity, but I spent $9 (not including tip and drink), and got both. I don't want to fixate on the price for too long, but I can never find restaurants that are good and cheap, really glad I tried this. I don't really know where to start with the pho, but the broth was so good. I got the number 10 (with no tripe). Everything went together perfectly, no taste was overpowering the rest. Needless to say, if you've had Pho, you'll like what they have here. Taste aside, their ingredients seem to be fairly high quality which we all can appreciate. The vegetables they give you on the side were super crunchy. I feel like a lot of places in this price range have to cut costs somewhere, I'm glad to see they didn't cut corners with ingredients. Tastes less homemade compared to other places I've visited. My first experience a couple months back was great. I had their egg rolls and then their Chicken Noodle Pho. I think my meal was no more than $10-$11. As for last night, I tried the Seafood Pho. Note to everyone - don't do it. I think I was eating all artificial seafood. (Yuck!) However the broth, noodles, and other veggies were fresh so I won't hold that against them. We went to this restaurant for late dinner and we were surprise because it was crowded at 8:35 (when we walked in). The waiter was very nice and did a great job. My wife who ordered the "mì xào giòn" and she said it was good but the noodle has a strong sense of veggie oil and that reduce significant flavor of the other stuffs on the dishe. I ordered the number 55, it was great, but the "thịt nướng" grill pork was over grill (burn) and has a bitter taste on it. Pho is one of my favorite foods, as I love soupy noodles, and I got a giant serving of it which could definitely feed multiple people or be two meals. There have been a couple of stir-fry dishes that I didn't love, but we keep coming back over and over again for our favorites. I was feeling sick, so my boyfriend took me to Pho Kien Giang because I asked for some hot soup. I'm really happy that he did because they have all my comfort Vietnamese foods, served in huge portions for reasonable prices. The staff was very friendly when we walked in. You can choose where you want to sit, and the host will follow you to your table. There are booths for small parties, and longer, family-style tables for large parties. The dining room is huge, so they can accommodate a lot of people at once. My boyfriend warned me that you usually have to wait a bit for food to come out, which was somewhat true, but I didn't think the wait was very long. We started with fresh wrapped shrimp spring rolls. They come with sweet chili sauce and sweet brown peanut sauce for dipping. I usually enjoy the brown sauce for the rolls, but theirs is slightly different from the usual; it's almost too sweet for me. It's not terrible, but it's different that expected. My boyfriend ordered a rice plate with marinated pork. It comes with seasoned rice, fresh cut veggies, and scallions. I usually like rice dishes with a fried egg, but it did come with a tofu square. He liked his food. I ordered the pho dac biet, without the bone. They serve the dac biet both ways, depending if you want the marrow. The regular size is more than enough for two people to share. The large size is HUGE. I almost wanted to order it for fun because it was only a marginal price to upgrade. The pho broth was very flavorful and they don't overpack the bowl with noodles. There was a nice and generous portion of meats to noodle, and lots of broth to drink. I loved my pho! I also ordered a traditional ice coffee, but they present it differently here. They serve the coffee drip with your cup, so you wait while it seeps. Then you pour the coffee into another cup with condensed milk and ice. You don't have a doubt of how fresh your coffee is because you mix it yourself. Really cool presentation. I loved the food at Pho Kien Giang.
