As a vietnamese customer myself everytime I come in here to pick up my food I feel very unwelcome. The 2 old men server/cashier are never happy. Their pho has gone down hill. The only reason why I keep coming back is they have the thick flat noodles for their pho while not alot of places have them. This is THE place to go in San Diego for Pho. They have a great combination of items to choose from but now, i just show up and order the A2/P2 Large. The water served there is with cucumer and basil i believe and is super refreshing to drink while eating the pho. The broth of the pho, is so well done and you can tell it was done for long time. This used to be my go to pho shop in San Diego. I usually order to go and pick up in store after my day's over, but I was super disappointed by their customer service today. They usually have orders that are ready on a table close to the cash register. Today when I went, I saw my order on my table (my name was on it), and I approached an employee to confirm the order (instead of just taking it and leaving). I had my phone in my hand, with the order details on the screen, and I showed it to the worker. I asked if I could take the food and leave. Instead of checking the details, he straight on started yelling at me, saying that if people just started taking orders before confirming, then there would be thieves! I'm not trying to start a debate with anyone here, just trying to pick up what I ordered. I approached him out of courtesy to let him know the order was mine before even touching it. And the fact that he was so loud to the point where all of the customers eating there turned their heads to see what the commotion was about was baffling. Good food but poor service. First off as we walked in there was no greeting as other received when they walked in. The interaction was stale to say the least. What do you want to eat was all he said. My Chicken Pho tasted literally like dish water. Made me wonder if there was soap in the broth or I the plastic Ketchup looking clear bottles that the hoisin or the sarachi was in because neither were in the manufacturer bottle. Or perhaps they added something to these sauces to stretch them. Nevertheless given the location and the price point I had a much higher expectation. I will never go back to this place and will be surprised if they were open 6 months from now. Everything about this experience was the worst. A nice little spot for a hot steaming bowl of Pho! The place was quiet on a tuesday night, and that suited us perfectly because there was no wait, we could chose our table and got good service. The meaty pho that my companion got was really filling, with generous amounts of meat and the right flavors. I'm such a creature of habit once I find a place I like. When I take my kids out on Mission Bay fishing or tubing they always ask if we can go to Pho Kitchen. Came here with friends and my kids always get the Chicken Pho. My oldest sons added veggies which are usually bok choy and broccoli and other similar veggies but this last visit they used peppers and veggies that you don't often see in Pho. My son said it wasn't as good as the other veggies. They are accommodating as we asked for spring rolls with chicken instead of pork and they said no problem. Those were delicious as is their peanut sauce. I tried the BBQ shrimp Vermicelli noodle dish with fish sauce. The noodles were cold, I guess that's how they serve it but it was a little strange but the flavor of the mint salad on the bottom combined with the fish sauce, noodles and shrimp was really good. There were about 6 nicely bbq flavored shrimp. I felt quite full after that meal. The menu is somewhat limited and the place is small. We were a party of 7 and had to split up into 2 tables since they don't really have any tables for large parties. They have one area in the restaurant where they can push 2 or 3 tables together but there were people sitting at those tables so the only way we could be seated without waiting a while was to sit at different tables. It worked out since we put all the kids at one table and the adults were able to have a peaceful meal. read more

As for the food, the most important aspect to any restaurant, I'd say it's pretty solid. I don't really order Pho anymore (Ramen is greater than Pho afterall ;)), but you have the option to get regular round noodle, or flat noodle! Offers a different, more slippery texture! They also have Com tam dishes here along with bun/ vermicelli noodle. Ordering is simple - choose your protein, carb (noodle or rice), then the combo. I always eye the special (RS) which comes with 5 items! But, R1-R3 are a little more friendly and under $10 each. Combo's always include your choice of protein (1-3) along with your carb and fresh veggies (cabbage, bean sprouts, cilantro, etc). Both noodle and rice dishes I've had always hit the spot, but they are on the pricier side in comparison to more traditional, less hip places like Mien Trung (my favorite place for bun). read more

It was 11:30pm on Saturday 7/15/17 - lunch time and I needed to stuff my belly. I decided to drop by Pho Kitchen since I was in the area and because of the rating (4.5 stars). The waiter greeted me and was cordial. I placed an order for to go - the R3, com tam suon nuong, bi, cha (broken rice with pork chop, pork rind and meat loaf), plus a taro smoothie and a passion fruit iced tea. Service was quick. I was in and out within ten minutes. When I came home and opened the container, my jaw dropped. I took the plastic fork that was provided with my order, stabbed the pork chop and yelled, what the hell! It was the most questionable, tiny piece of pork chop that I have ever received. Four bites and I would have been done. I've had better portions from a hole in the wall joint in the hood than this refined eatery. For $9.75 I expected a full piece of pork chop, not half. Granted the menu discloses "1 per order", but if you look at my picture, you would agree that the quality control here is not up to par with the high reviews. They should have made up for the disproportionate serving or prepared another pork chop. Sadly, I couldn't distinguish if this was a leftover piece of something greater or if it's the intent of the cook to save money and get rid of this small, thin piece of pork attached to a bone so I did not touch it. The whole entree was tossed in the trash can. I didn't bother to try the side items. We finished our drinks and it was on the sweeter side, but I guess that was needed to make up for the bad taste in my mouth. read more

Brought the fam in this afternoon as I remembered their Oceanside location being really good. This location was mediocre. The service was very good, the food came out quick, all of the utensils were provided, and the server was nice. The issue was the food. While the egg rolls were outstanding, the pho was not. Neither was the BBQ chicken plate my daughter ordered. The pho was bland and the noodles were mush. It was flavorless unlike their sister store in Oceanside. The BBQ chicken wasn't piping hot when it arrived to our table, it leads me to believe it was pre-cooked and sitting in a warmer for quite some time. The portions sizes were good, however. Another issue was the iced coffee. I don't understand why places choose to add hazelnut to an authentic cafe sua da. I say bring back the rich, sweet, and bold flavors of the real thing rather than add some "hazelnut" American adaptation to what they think will attract more sales. This is why I'm wary of ordering cafe sua da here but not so much in concentrated areas of high Vietnamese population. I don't think I will be coming back to this location which is a good thing because I live closer to Oceanside anyways. read more

Let me show you how to order right on the menu: Pho: Get filet mignon with added meat balls (or tenders yummmmmy). Ask for a sauce plate and add some hoisin sauce + sriracha to dip your meat in there. If you like your noodle soft, go with flat noodle, this is the type of noodle we actually have in the real pho in Vietnam. If you like onions, ask for sliced onion with vinegar (or pickled sliced onions), add some sriracha on top and eat it with your pho. This makes eating pho alot more fun! If you ever want to try chicken pho, do yourself a favor and ask for the ginger fish sauce. If you can handle fish sauce, this will make your chicken pho 10 times better. And don't worry, they dilute the fish sauce so it's not extremely strong like the pure one. Trust me, it's good, goddamn it just get it! Vermicelli: Get the filet one with added shrimps; I usually get 3 shrimps and the whole thing fills me up pretty well. Their filet is sooooo soft and flavorful. This is my favorite dish when I want something else besides pho. You don't even need a knife to cut the meat you can rip them apart with your utensils. Egg rolls: These always come out fresh and crispy. Wrap them with the lettuce and add some mint leaves inside. Dip them in the fish sauce and slowly and carefully take a small bite cause they are very hot inside. Don't burn your tongue, just enjoy the food :) Drinks: Get the Soda Chanh (club soda with lemon/lime juice). It's super refreshing. Every time my bf feels sleepy I just let him have a sip and it feels like he just got slapped tf out of him. It's concentrated but it's not strong. Idk, it's just different from all the soda chanh i've had before. Get taro milk tea with whipped cream. Surprisingly it can be as good (or even better) than alot of boba places in SD. Service: Always good. I don't know what else to say. Give them hard workers good tips :) read more
