What a gem in San Diego! We were greeted and asked kindly to wait "7 minutes" for our server. We asked for a booth as we were tired from our day and was accommodated. We enjoyed the pho tai and the special canh cua (sour soup) with ca kho to (braised catfish) with a bowl of rice. It was a delicious meal that I was shocked to see on the menu in SD. Most Vietnamese restaurants get the stamp of approval for comfort food by default, but Pho Leo stands out in two ways. The first is the ginormous portion that they serve for the Pho Dac Biet. I've never left a bowl of pho unfinished, but I neared that mark during my visit. My favorite topping is a tie between the brisket for its flavor and the tendon for its chewiness. The second is how spacious the inside feels. Each table sits pretty far apart from each other, and there's a ton of natural light passing through the windows. It's the perfect establishment for a large group. I visited on a Saturday afternoon with a total of 6 and the staff accommodated us immediately. Although I only opted for the pho this time, it surprised me how well-equipped this Vietnamese restaurant looks for grilled dishes. Errr, right out of the gate, the way they served the fruit tea pissed me off. First, there's no way for me to eat the jelly because they gave me a regular size straw. The fruit jelly isn't just decoration; if you're offering fruit tea with jelly in it and give me a straw, you have to have the thicker straws with the diagonal cut at the bottom. Giving me a straw where the jelly doesn't fit through it is insulting. Not only can I not get the jelly itself, but the jelly will then get stuck on the bottom of the straw, interrupting me as I'm trying to drink the tea. Second, they gave me a glass, but the glass holds way less than the bottle. Same problem again, the jelly sinks to the bottom of the bottle, so when I pour into the glass, none of the jelly makes it into the first glass. Aside from that, the fruit tea was actually a pretty good consistency and flavor. But did they just buy this? If they made this, why have this kind of setup? It's like they reinvented the wheel to turn it into a square. In my not humble, entitled opinion, no self respecting boba enjoyer should require a glass. They should be content with the large to-go cup. Anyways.....the pho is pretty good. Not the best broth I've had in the last month, but it's fine I guess. The rib is also meaty and tender. All the other meat was good as well. If I have to nitpick something else, I do see a lemon instead of a lime again. Not a huge deal, as I also think lemon is valid. But every time a joint does it, I assume they're trying to cut costs. Also, imo, the lemon works better the stronger the umami of the broth is. On the other hand, I think the portion of bean sprouts and basil is generous enough. Finally, I didn't see a house chili or hot sauce, only sriracha. read more

Pho Leo and Grill in the Point Loma area of San Diego opened earlier this year. Located in a renovated building with free parking in the lot was convenient. The restaurant is bigger, better and newer than the average pho restaurants in SD. Upon entry, I chose to sit by the big bay window. Overall, the restaurant appeared clean with clean menus. My order was taken quickly. But when a larger group of diners who arrived way after Me received their order first, I wasn't happy and was about to walk out. Good thing, I didn't leave, since my order was presented shortly after. The pho with brisket, two beef rib bones, and grilled prawns all looked good. As usual I was only interested in the broth, which tasted wonderful even without chili oil or any spices. I only added the fresh cut herbs on top to settle in a little and release its aromatic scents to the broth. I had sipped about half the bowl of broth and had the server package the rest TOGO. I should eat all that meat, as I'm deficient in Iron, maybe have a little later. My pup Fendi loves the beef brisket and beef rib bone which I will cut into small pieces and add a few to her meal, for later. Service by the young male staffers was professional, attentive and nice. They were fascinated that I'm from Beverly Hills in LA. They asked if I visited during the grand opening, to which I replied No, because it seemed like it would be too crowded with lots free loading people, he laughed in agreement. I came here for dinner the other night since I was in the area and saw that it was new. As I entered, I was greeted by one of the wait staff and was surprised at how large the restaurant was. It had an open layout, lots of seating and an open kitchen (in my experience, you don't see much of this at pho restaurants). The restaurant was very clean and I saw multiple people cleaning tables very promptly. All of the staff there were very attentive and friendly and our table was never dirty and our water glasses always full. On to the food - the menu has a good amount of options and they have some happy hour specials as well. I stuck to some of my favorites, including the fresh spring rolls which definitely were fresh and filled with shrimp and pork. Of course I have to get pho and chose the 'build your own' option with brisket and rare beef and the house noodles which were a little different than the classic, but still good. The broth was rich and the portion was pretty large. The second entree was the vermicelli with egg roll and chicken. Also a large portion, however would've like another egg roll. The pho broth was a bit on the bland for me where it was missing the spice depth that I was looking for, but still a very comforting pho dish. They offer choice of regular noodles or fresh. I opted for the fresh and found that it got bloated quicker so I would recommend the regular noodles. The beef ribs were huge and fall off the bone tender. It was bit on the gristlier side. Not only did they get my order wrong multiple times, they didn't make any attempt at good customer service. A long vacant Chinese buffet in the Midway District is now the home of a new Vietnamese restaurant. Pho Leo & Grill debuted in the middle of last month with a 50% discount offered during its soft opening weekends. The staff severely underestimated the initial customer demand as we tried to visit for a Saturday lunch and was told the wait for a table would be at least an hour. We decided to leave because one of our friends who was already seated with her party had waited over an hour and a half to get their correct food order!! When I returned on a weekday evening a few weeks ago, the place was less than 1/4 full. Parking was ample in the lot to the east of the building because the fast food joint in that section was closed for business. The dining capacity was huge and had to be over 100 because it used to seat that many for an AYCE buffet. Along the back of the room was a long window to the kitchen preparation area in which you could observe the cooks grilling various proteins. The menu was split between two laminated pages. One sheet listed the pho and broken rice. There were seven choices for the former and five choices for the latter. Appetizers, noodles, and vermicelli made up the other sheet. There were six, three, and one selection for each of these categories. I don't know if there are plans to expand the offerings because it seemed limited compared to other local pho eateries. For my meal, I started with the Spring Rolls which came as a pair. Each roll was stuffed with pork, shrimp, rice vermicelli, lettuce, bean sprouts, and mint inside a rice paper wrap. The size of the rolls and the peanut sauce for dipping were comparable to elsewhere. A bowl of the Vermicelli with Grilled Pork was my entree. Cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, bean sprouts, and pickled vegetables accompanied the rice noodles and pork inside the bowl. A cup of fish sauce was provided on the side to pour into the vessel. I found the quantity of meat to be ample, but I wanted more noodles for the base. The speed of service and accuracy of making my order were on point which was a welcome sight given the operational difficulties they experienced during their early days. The average rating of my two trips to Pho Leo & Grill was at a three star level. read more
