Great place for lunch on weekdays, fast service, good comfort food, and clean. Ordered the standard small #1 which has a variety of beef and parts, with fresh noodles. Broth was on the lighter side (not too strong) which was easy to drink by itself, I drank all mine. Don't understand why my friends didn't drink theirs, why order soup just to leave it behind. The meats were plentiful and tender, conveniently bite size. Fresh noodles were thicker/fatter and so much better than the traditional noodles. I like the simple light wood furniture that has the look and feel of a clean modern cafe. Cash or Credit accepted. read more

Excellent short rib bone soup and the avocado smoothie is always a hit as well. The pho is good, but we come here for the rib bone soup exclusively. My family and I'll usually order one rib bone soup each and I'll order a side of noodles with the soup to make my own pho. I find that the soup with another entree of pho is too much food for me. They offer outside and inside dining as well and the service is average/good. read more

Like any good pho place in San Jose, not that clean, they don't let you have time to look at menu before they take your order. Lol Pho : the broth is a little sweeter for me then other places but still good. I like that they still have a small option with lots of meat and fresh fat noodles. I ordered the Dac Biet number 1 small with fresh noodles. Good portion and added a beef rib which was just perfect. Ice tea Togo and your ready for the day! They also have desserts if you want to order and like any pho place it's in and out in 15 min. read more

The pho was okay in my perspective, broth was standard - not bad but not amazing. The che (coconut milk with jelly) was outstanding and I'd come back for this alone. The beef rib I got was chewier than what I prefer. You can get flat rice noodles instead of regular pho noodles here. I do like the outdoor seating and relaxed vibe. A heads up that they close at 7 pm read more

Arrived on a Friday around 6:30pm and was immediately seated. The waiter took our order promptly and food came out quick too. I got the well-done brisket and the broth had a nice meaty flavor, but not too rich or salty. I normally don't finish all the broth at other pho places, but this one was delicious and my bowl was empty! read more

We use to go to pho #1 quite often, this is the first visit pho papa. I like the overall remodel but using bench instead of chair suggested they want faster turn over since it's uncomfortable to sit or relax. Pho was fine but I suspected the broth was not brew from the ground up with raw bones, taste kind of like from concentrate or extract. There ere some level of MSG thirst 15 min after eating but not to great extent, so not a big deal. Will be back. read more

Ate here on New Year's Day morning. There was no wait to dine in. They had a table full of take out orders ready to go. My group of 4 ordered 2 large pho dac biet, a small pho tai chin, a side order of beef rib, a side order of oxtails, 4 cups of teas and a pennywort with mung bean drink. Total after tips came out to $23/pp. Service was quick. The broth was very good, but a tiny bit salty for me. The meat to noodle ratio was very generous. The beef rib had a good amount of beef and it was tender with a bit of a chew. It also came in with some broth, not sure if it is the same as the pho broth or not. I think it's different, my friends say it's the same. The side of oxtail had about 3 decent size pieces, also cooked till tender. The beef rib is not usually offered at other pho restaurants which is why it would get me to come back to Pho Papa. read more

Pho papa used to be the best spot to get a bowl bowl in San Jose. But like most Vietnamese restaurants, once they get popular they start half-assing a lot of things. I've always been an advocate and telling people to go here but my last several experiences here have been very lackluster and disappointing. One of the biggest things I've noticed is the inconsistency of the broth. It's no longer as beefy and flavorful. Not sure if it's due to how it's being made or the second call out I have which definitely would affect the taste of the broth. Second thing is I've noticed my noodles have been very starchy. It's basically that taste you get when noodles are boiled and not rinsed an additional time to get rid of the starch. This leaks into the broth and ruins The taste. Lastly, the amount of protein they give you is laughable at this point. I typically will only order fatty brisket and tendons. I always had enough protein to finish my entire bowl with noodles. Now even if I were to bite my my fatty brisket in two, I still don't have enough protein for the rest of my noodles. Absolutely skimping on the protein. Are there days where these things don't happen ? Sure. Do. I want to spend $20 on a bowl of foil for inconsistency. No thanks. There are plenty of other spots that execute on the daily. read more

You know you're doing something right if you only sell Pho at your restaurant (no rice dishes here). I ordered the Pho Bo Vien (pho with meatballs) and hubby ordered the Pho Tai (steak). We ordered a side of pickled onions which was highly talked about on Yelp. I dunked a lot of those onions in my pho which added a nice crunch. Overall, the food was delightful. Service was a little off with our female server. However, the men in the back were supper happy. The restaurant itself is super spacious and clean. There is amply parking as it is located near Target. read more

So according to the pho connoisseurs, the top 3 pho restaurants in San Jose are: Pho Y #1 Noodle House, Pho Papa, and Pho 54. Pho 54 gives a huge portion size for those that are looking to fill up their stomachs. I find that the beef pho from Pho Papa is more flavorful. Make sure you get all the sides, hanh dam costs extra but they'll taste good. I have not tried Pho Y #1 which is right across on the other side of the street. So far, Pho Papa is my favorite. Pho Bel-Air I find to be also consistent as well as Pho 21 which is great if you want a late night dinner since Pho Papa closes earlier. read more

Lot of my homies have been raving about this place so it was time to try. I ordered the beef and meatball pho. The broth was average, it didn't slap. After adding in the hoisin, sriracha, and lime, the broth tasted a bit better but flavor was still pretty average. The beef was soft and not chewy like some places, and the meat ball...was meat ball, lol. Overall, the flavor was okay. Che ba mau: Three colored bean dessert. It was more like 2 colors, and it tasted full of red bean. The coconut milk ended up turning pink from the red bean...so yeah a lot of red beans. There was also an item in there that looked and tasted like crystal boba, which is definitely not in the actual recipe. That was an add on by the restaurant. Bottom line: Average pho. Classic che dessert done wrong. Not worth the rave. I've had worse and I've had better. It's a no for me. read more

Hands down the best Beef Pho Ive had in SJ. the beef bone is really good as well and its only 7.50! Service could be better, got only little cups for water. This place gets busy but was able to get seated right away. Will return, left very full and satisfied! read more

It's really unfortunate to be leaving this review but i believe it's only fair. San Jose has one to many pho places for this place to have such horrible customer service and mediocre quality of food for the price. The restaurant is just dirty - from the floors to the utensils they use, and when you ask them for a clean set they speak poorly of you or flat out ignore you.. The broth is bland and the amount of star anis they use over powers the whole experience. We ordered the famous "beef rib" (i was super excited for this one) as everyone raves about it... The beef rib was literally cartilage and bone. Boiled in the broth - no meat, no flavor, nothing Pic was how the beef rib came out If i has to guess (cartilage and all) maybe 3oz of meat at best. When i asked them if i could get a rib with some actual meat on it, the guy got upset and said: "This is it, this is how it come - inside outside that's what you get" I won't be returning... Save your money and go literally anywhere else in the Bay Area, this place ain't worth it. read more

Pho Papa is hands down my favorite pho place in the Bay Area. The store is decently sized and even though there usually is a line, it goes really quickly. I also love how homey it feels. You can't go wrong with any pho on the menu--it just depends what type of meat you want. I recommend getting the the fresh/thick noodles, but they always run out early. The broth is delicious and the meat to noodle ratio is always perfect. I always recommend Pho Papa to all my friends. read more

Usually go get pho with my dad and this is his favorite spot which is now my favorite go to pho spot! Honestly the bánh tươi (fresh noodles) here is one of the best! The broth is great as well, reminds me of the broth back in VN. I got the pho tái bò viên and the bò viên (meat balls) here are huge and delicious. They have the little tendon bits inside which is an added plus. The đặc biệt includes everything except tripe. They also have the giant beef rib bone on the side that you can order. Never disappoint whenever I swing by and I feel like they should have more stars. A small is now $14 and a large is $15. The service is very quick as usual and they bring out the food with 5-10 mins. One thing for me is the table is a lil small, I'm not that tall or anything but had to slouch down to eat, not a big deal but just for anyone 6ft it'll be a lil low LOL. read more

I know it can be hard to choose Pho Papa when Pho Y #1 is RIGHT there across the street, but you should definitely give this place a try, ESPECIALLY if you're a bit hungrier than usual. They have a much better outdoor seating area, their prices are pretty comparable, but probably most important of all, their pho is GOOD. Quick disclaimer though: their broth is a *little bit* different from traditional broths, in that it is chock-full of STRONG beef flavor instead of a "cleaner" broth, but it's still very tasty! This totally makes sense given that, unlike most pho places, you can order a huge beef bone on the side to dip/add to your pho/gnaw on like the big Pho Papa that you are (sorry, I had to!) I wasn't super hungry so I did not opt for this fun option, but it seems very appetizing now that the weather is getting colder and we're all entering hibernation mode. Other than that, everything about them is just the same as your everyday pho place. They have all of the same add ons (I recommend the pickled onions, just to balance the extra-beefy broth!) and the same super quick service you'd expect from a pho place in East San Jose. if you're looking for a hot bowl of pho full of flavor, check Pho Papa out! --- sweet: unique, extra-beefy broth bitter: the unique, extra beefy broth haha. Food: It's my go-to pho place! Not only it's close to my place, it's the best tasting broth ever! They only have pho though nothing else! No rolls, rice plates etc. not even diet sodas but good enough for me! It's 5/5 for the flavor and legit pho taste! Service: it's a small spot so, staff will see you if you need anything. I came here today after not eating here since they first opened, I'm not sure if they stopped closing mid day and cleaning up the kitchen before opening for dinner. I am honestly disappointed, the broth is kinda bland and I wish I would've gone to Pho Y instead but I was so excited to come back and eat at pho papa. We ordered 3 Small Pho Dac Biets and 2 Togo, the first pho we got to the table had a clearly seen piece of hair at the top of the bowl on the fat. My BF didn't wanna complain so I just took it out for him, didn't think about it and started eating. I get to finishing half my bowl and I pick up the piece of fat and there's 2 pieces of hair on it, I was so disgusted and still didn't complain. When we had first come in and I pulled the utensils out to clean, I grabbed 3 spoons and there was just a long piece of hair connected to all the spoons which was already so nasty. I asked for a cup of water so that I could clean the utensils before we ate, our water didn't come til the end because they literally place the order of water through the iPad. This place used to be very clean years back, I don't know what happened. All around, the hairs that looked like literal pubes really threw us off and makes me lose my appetite. For all I know is 2/3 bowls we had hair that we know of and don't know if the togos had hair either, they were on a roll with the hair seasoning today. The bland broth is whatever since you can just drench it in sauce, overall I will stick with other places like Pho Y across the street or Pho Ha Noi. read more

Went here today after months of not coming. I use to go here once a week because it's by work but today I went back to see if it has changed from the last time I had it. It has gone down hill a lot for me. This was my go to spot because I loved the beef bone as many places didn't have it. Now things have changed and it's served at a lot of other pho spots. The thing that kept me coming back the the rich and flavorful broth but even that has changed. It feels like since the price of goods have gone up, they either changed vendors or went with a different quality of beef. If that's not the case something has changed. read more

This is one of my favorite pho locations in the area. Food- The food here is tasty! I've never had a bad experience eating here. The pho broth always tastes great every time I've come here. The pho here bring me back to life especially after nights of fun excursions. The only change I would make is switching out the type of Tai meat they use. It seems more like bulgogi rather than thin cut beef slices. But that's a personal preference! Would definitely revisit! read more

Have not been back since the pandemic (4years ago). They still rein as my top 3 pho place. Pho papa Pho Hanoi Tayho Santa Clara (not San Jose). Maybe I will re-rate after I try Pho Y again. Solid 4. Overall good experience via post mates would order again. + they use a lot of spices in their broth, more than most pho places. Heavy on the star anise. You could tell they put "love" in their broth. - ordered pho for 2 people. The bean sprouts and toppings seem to only be for one person. 1 lime wedge to split between to people? 1 set of utensils, etc. I was happy we eat a lot of Asian food and have pho bowls, spoons, chopsticks and had limes on hand but if we didn't, that would have sucked. -my pho meat seemed disproportionate. I like brisket and tendon the best. There was one small piece of tendon = size of a quarter coin. But massive amounts of flank and brisket. This is a solid choice for pho in San Jose. The broth is pretty flavorful and savory and they are generous with the meat. I like to get their wide noodles here, they have the right texture and don't come out absolutely mushy like some places. Only complaint I have is that the soup didn't come out as hot as I would've liked. They also don't put cilantro in their pho which is good for those who can't eat cilantro, although I do like having it in the soup. Service is pretty quick and attentive, although they keep interactions minimal. During busy hours this place can definitely get packed as the interior is not the largest, though outdoor seating is available as well. read more

Pho Papa is one of the better pho spots in the South Bay. The wait has dramatically died down over the years making it a lot more accessible on weekend hungover mornings. The large pho dac biet with added beef rib is the go-to move. I alternate between fresh and regular noodles but haven't been disappointed with either. The broth is clean and beefy, they give just enough accouterments, and the noodle-to-broth ratio is perfect (albeit deceiving at first glance). Sure, it's one of the pricier options. The broth can be stronger, but it's an easy choice when stack-ranking against other places around the area and a hell of a lot easier than preparing a big ol pot of our own pho at home. 4/5 overall, would frequent back more in the future. read more

My go to to pho! Location is relatively small rectangular shape with the kitchen right in the middle. Service is quick and efficient. My favorite order is the oxtail pho with extra oxtail. The oxtail is super tender and fall off the bone. They will give you a small piece of paper with you table # which you would bring to the cashier once you are done eating and are ready to pay. Quality is always consistent. On the weekends be prepared for a wait. read more

My parents and I ate here for lunch a few hours ago. Since it was during the lunch hours, this place was packed. We had to wait for a table especially due to the pandemic. It's worth the wait. The waiters and waitresses are all friendly. They care about you and making the place clean. The food here is pretty good and the food comes within a few minutes after you have ordered. I was shocked and surprised. Perhaps it is because the place is very busy, especially during the lunch hour. I also ordered one of their desserts. I just had to order Suong Sa Hot Luu as I have not had it in a while. Also because there aren't a lot of places that have it on the back of the menu. I would definitely return to this restaurant, if I were in the area. P.S. They are open everyday from 8 AM to 7 PM during the pandemic. read more

I've been here for years so idk why it's taken me this long to make a review for it lol so the food here are bomb. I'm really sensitive to MSG and I can guarantee you that they don't have that here. Service is speedy! The waiters are on it! They clean tables and serve food quick so there's no complaints here. The ambiance is normal. There's indoor and outdoor seating and they're always busy here during lunch / dinner so depending on the day, you may be waiting for some time but it's worth it. I usually get #1 or #14 but whichever phở bowl you get, you won't be disappointed! Highly recommend. read more

Alright, this is now my go-to pho place whenever I'm in San Jose. *Food* Pho dac biet - the broth is the perfect balance of meaty umami and fragrant lightness (nice and clear, too!). The noodles have a great texture, and the meat is super tender. A+ will finish to the bottom of the bowl again Suong sa hat luu - omg this is the best one I've had outside of Vietnam. All of the tapioca and jelly is the right size for straw slurping, and the slightly crunchy tapioca is addictive. Definitely not overly sweet, though I might ask for mine to be a bit less sweet next time. The ambiance is clean and sleek which is a pleasant surprise considering most pho places are low key kind of ratchet. Pho papa is my go to pho spot in San Jose. The broth is uncredited unique in taste and is light and flavorful. I usually get the pho tai with meatballs and a side of the beef rib. One of the highest quality of meats I've had in a pho location. Another one of my favorites would be the ox tail, definitely a must try. Considering that I'm Vietnamese and my mom always make amazing home made pho, I'm very picky. There are only 2 pho restaurants in the whole Santa Clara County that I'll ever eat at - Pho Papa is one of them. Their broth makes me feel like I'm eating at home. It's not water down at all. Unfortunately, the order was poorly packed--containers were thrown into the bag sideways, causing them to leak, and the fresh noodles were carelessly placed in a flimsy bag.
