Great pho place in N Austin. We each ordered spring rolls: shrimp for me, grilled pork for BF. Shrimp was on par with other spring rolls I've tried (cucumber was a nice touch). The pork sausage was flavor packed and included crunch from fried egg roll wrapper rolled and tucked into the spring roll providing a nice crunch to each bite. I ordered the combo pho (Large). Warning: Large means extra broth, noodles, and meat. Our waitress did warn me but I had missed lunch and was hungry and up for a challenge. Tried my best but didn't make the clean bowl club. The flavor of the broth is amazing; we could taste the cinnamon and lemongrass. BF loved his meatballs and voted it best pho in Austin. I recently tried this pho spot twice, once to go and in person. Both times I felt the broth was pretty salty which overpowered the overall taste. After adding a couple limes, basil leaves and jalapeño slices, it was good. I don't know if I personally would consider this place the best pho restaurant in Austin considering how highly rated it is since I have no plans in returning any time soon. read more

This place has been moving in the wrong direction. Customer service and quality have taken a huge slip. Now that they're settled in, the guy behind the counter (maybe owner) is openly picking his nose in public and corners are being cut in more ways than one. How disgusting! Pho Phong Luu was very good at N Lamar. The pho flavor not the same on new location. The famous combo fried rice not on menu at this location. Very disappointed so my favorite pho is Pho Ha Noi. Wow!! Probably my favorite place to get Vietnamese food in Austin. Pho Phong Luu us a small restaurant but they have their service down to a science! We came on a Sunday around 11:00am and It was packed. We were seated 15 minutes after putting our name down and received our meal in about 10-15 minutes. Banh Mi: Baguette is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The sandwich is stuffed with all kinds of pickled veggies, pate, and loaded with meat! Highly recommend ordering 2 or 3 of these! P04: Broth isn't super salty, or oily. Light in flavor and very fillings. The noodles were very soft and meat cooked to medium. A regular size is pretty big, but if you're really hungry, definitely get the large. Overall, Pho Phong Luu is a hidden gem and I can't wait to come back. read more

If you love pho, this is the place to go. Plenty of my fellow Yelpers have already raved about how great the pho is, so I'm not going to add another pho photo or review, but I will fill in a few things they have overlooked. When you pull into the strip center on Dessau Rd, you'll find that there is ample parking. As you enter into the establishment, you immediately notice how new, clean and organized it is. There's a total of 18 tables, 4&6 tops, but no out door tables. The chairs and benches are quite comfortable as well. We got here at 5 o'clock on a Friday, and the place was almost empty, but by six it fills up. Service is prompt, and as soon as they seat you, you get a complimentary warm bottle of water. They do have some other drink choices, but no alcohol. I went to wash my hands in the men's room and noticed that it is a small, but very clean bathroom with no urinal. It's at this point I would have extolled all the virtues of everything that was served, but my fellow yelpers have already done that for me. We got pho from here . Good Vegetarian pho is hard to come by. Most places have very bland broth when it comes to vegetarian pho. However, I was surprised to find that the broth at this location for the vegetarian pho was actually super tasty. I didn't have to add any extra seasonings or anything to it because it tasted great how it came. I also really like that they did not skimp on the veggies and all the veggies were super fresh and crisp. Mine came with some veggies that were not typically seen in pho like peas and carrots. It also had broccoli in there and it came with a lot of bean sprouts and Thai basil for garnishing. I did really like the pho here and would definitely recommend this place to another vegetarian that wants good veggie pho! Such good quality pho!! Always consistent and good portions. The pho always comes out hot which I always am looking for when I order pho or soup. Their fried rice and egg rolls are always on point too! I wish they gave a bit more shrimp in the combination fried rice which we ordered but they are big pieces. With the new place they opened a few months ago, it's a lot bigger and very clean. It does get busy, but service is pretty fast! I saw the 5 stars from fellow yelpers plus my quest to find great pho, so I made the trek to south Pflugerville to try out Pho Phong Luu. As others have mentioned, it's a little tricky to find but Google Maps took me into the parking lot of a convenience store and the restaurant was at the end of the adjacent little strip center. I went just before noon and the place was packed with locals and nearby Samsung and Dell employees. The space was not large but nicely decorated with every inch used efficiently for seating. I waited about 5 minutes before being seated by a friendly server. I ordered my pho with eye of round and brisket and received it within a few minutes. Wow, the drive was absolutely worth it! The broth was silky and full of flavor and the noodles, onions and meat were plentiful and tender. Very generous portions they were and oh so delicious on a cold day. The service was great as well. I savored my pho slowly and a couple next to me struck up a conversation. The gent slapped me on the back and said "you use chopsticks better than me!" An over all great dining experience that I hope to repeat soon. Definitely worth trying out, you won't be disappointed. read more

After moving to Austin, I really wanted to find a great spot for pho. This place has popped up on a few different lists as some of the best pho in Austin, so my expectations were honestly pretty high. The location is a bit on the edge of the city but there is plenty of parking and easy to get to. I tried the chicken pho, special beef pho, and the classic banh mi. Unfortunately, my favorite item was the banh mi and did not love the pho too much. Compared to some other pho restaurants I've been to for pho, it is a good option but the broth was too sweet for my liking and didn't have enough of the deep, meat flavor I look for when I eat pho. The banh mi was amazing, though. It was definitely the best banh mi I've had since moving to Austin and would come back just for that alone! My boyfriend and I live in south Austin, so we rarely make it to the north side of town. However, we found ourselves in the area and decided to check out Pho Phong Luu after reading some good things. This place really is a gem of a restaurant. The service was fast and the employees friendly. The food is truly where this place shines, though. We split the Grilled Sausage Spring Rolls, Special Bahn Mi, and an extra large bowl of Pho with Meatballs, Brisket, and Steak. The spring rolls were a good size and tasted great. They put some kind of crunchy thing inside of the spring roll which is a fun texture to bite in to. The pho broth was amazing. It had just the right amount of spices and seasonings and was clear and light just like you'd expect from a good bowl of pho. The meatballs were some of the most tender we've had as well. Last but absolutely not least, the Special Bahn Mi. It may not look like much in the pictures, but I think they call it special because that's exactly what it is. This bahn mi is made in the traditional format with head cheese, Vietnamese ham, and pâté. The bread was perfect: warm and soft on the inside, crunchy and flaky on the outside. We agreed it is the best bahn mi we've had to date. It really is a bummer this place is so far from where we live or we would easily be regulars there. Go try this place. My friend recommended this place, and it's honestly been my favorite pho restaurant in all of Austin. I personally think it's better than Tan My and Pho Saigon. Their broth is incredibly flavorful and light. I've noticed there are a few other Austin restaurants that have pretty oily or light broth, but both Pho Phong Luu's broth and noodles are delicious. I also love that they have a "You Pick Three" pho option because I really only like brisket and tripe and sometimes have a hard time explaining that to waiters at other pho restaurants. Since pho in Vietnam doesn't always have good quality meat, I can definitely say that overall, the pho in this restaurant is better than the pho in Vietnam. My Vietnamese friends all agree with me. The banh mi was great too. I really liked its bread--it is crunchy on the outside but moist on the inside. There are many Vietnamese customers at the restaurant, which shows that it is authentic. It is the go-to pho place for my Vietnamese friends, as well as for my husband and me (we are Korean). Service: Their business hours are tricky, so you should check whether it is open before you go there. They are closed every Wednesday and Thursday, and on the weekend, they are open only for lunchtime. The restaurant was very clean, and the food was served pretty fast. One thing I check to judge if they take care of sanitation is how clean their kitchen and restroom area are. Both were clean. The servers were nice and friendly. I was psyched to finally find a viet place at 5 stars. And in Austin, too! COVID Tip: They ARE open. You can order by calling via phone, but expect the sweet man on the phone to speak a little bit of English. Rest assured, he knows what you're ordering :) Happened to pass through on my way back from exploring the north end of Austin with my dog. I called ahead and ordered a tofu banh mi and a pho order for my friend as well. The order was ready within 15 minutes. The store was only seating one family, and the man himself was wearing one of those face shields. They also have hand sanitizer in multiple places, and it looked like they were taking a lot of takeout orders. The banh mi bread was not my favorite. It's not the crunchy French bread :( the bread they use is soft, almost like regular country rolls type of soft. The tofu was marinated beautifully though, and the flavor was good. Make sure you ask for no pate if you don't eat meat! My friend said his pho wasn't worth getting again, but that's because he's Viet and I guess nothing compares to Mom's pho. I would also agree though--wouldn't come back for the banh mi. Go elsewhere. In all though, Austin is devoid...I repeat, DEVOID of good pho spots. Coming from Phoenix, AZ, I'm deprived of real good quality pho. There's definitely enough of a community and demand for it for plenty of restaurants to open and stay in business but nothing has wowed me. Credentials: 100% viet blooded, been eating home cooked pho since birth. Multiple trips back to the motherland as well. Was excited to try this place as I've heard from various sources that this was the place that Viets in Austin say is their favorite. It's rare you see so many 5 star reviews for a pho restaurant so I was intrigued. They brand themselves as no MSG in their products so that says a lot about their preparation. The essence of pho is the broth that is usually simmered for many hours. Nail that down and you will have a great product. That being said, the broth here is just that. I didn't need to add any hoisin or sriracha sauce in my pho and it was still good! The only thing I noticed is the meat wasn't as fresh as I would've prefer. They had some yellowish coloring on some pieces, probably fat? I usually prefer thick, fresh pho noodles so it would've be a win if they had this option to pair with their great broth. Pho Phong Luu is small and family run restaurant in a strip mall in the North Lamar neighborhood just off of (you guessed it) North Lamar Blvd. Food: PHO! With meatball, eye round steak, flank steak, whatever your choice, you will not be disappointed. A bowl of rice noodles sit in a delicious hot broth, topped with onions and green onions. Soups come with bean spouts, sliced jalapeños, basil leaves, with lime wedges. Do try the hand rolls - both the shrimp and my fave, the pork, filled with a slice of grilled pork, rice noodle, cucumber and carrot, and a fried piece of rolled spring roll dough. Divine. Service: Friendly and efficient, particularly during off peak hours and days (I.e. after lunch rush, mid-week). Cost: A bowl of pho will run you about $11.50, plus $2 more for a large (worth it if you're hungry.) Rolls run around $4.50. Two phos, two rolls, and two drinks usually run us about $48-$50 before tipping. Overall: Worth the jaunt out there. Good food, clean, friendly service. Lots of parking in the strip mall most days.
