#51 and chicken wonton soup the best in town! Salad rolls with peanut sauce are exceptional.

On another episode of SoCal Viets Test Portland Viet Food, my parents and I try Pho Van! None of us, however, got the pho. We were all pleasantly surprised by our entrees! My dad got the catfish vermicelli, which was very well balanced with the portion of protein and veggies. It was healthy and delicious. My mom got the Mi Quang. Blasphemously, she said it was the best she ever had! My mom is a picky eater and thinks she is the best cook (to me she is), so she can be a credible source. I decided to play it safe and get the Wonton Noodles, and was not disappointed. Ask for less noodles if you prefer a smaller ratio of noodles:soup. Easy parking, great service, fair prices, and food came out fast. That makes for an easy 5/5. read more

As recommended for the best Vietnamese sweet desert - chè ba màu in the 82nd street area. We went back for dinner the next day. The restaurant has an onsite parking area, and it is clean and cozy. We had to order the famous grill fish ahead of time so they do have enough time to prepare. For dinner, we also had Banh Xeo, goi Cuon and goi Tom Thịt. The foods and services are very good. I really enjoy Pho Van But on my last visit I was quite disappointed with the level of consideration and service. While dining and taking a drink of my water, I noticed something in my water, it turned out to be a big black Ant. I didn't mention it to my wife and daughter while dining, as I didn't want to disgust them and ruin their meal. While paying for my meal, I let the host know that there was ant in my water, and her response was "do you want another water?". I just laughed and casually left in disappointment. Was truly disappointed at the level of concern and consideration, as we have been frequent diners at this location. I would hope they discuss this treatment so future diners and patrons are treated better. On this visit we ordered the spring rolls, salad rolls, won Ton egg noodle soup, beef pho, and combo plate. Customers deserve better treatment and consideration in these types of situations. read more

Ordered the number 51 Vermicelli Noodle Entree - Bun Thit Cha Gio. It was very delicious. Flavor was not over powering. But you can tell its less msg compared to back home (Vancouver BC). Also had the Thai milk tea. I was surprised they have this at a Viet place. It was not bad. But I had to say the Thai milk tea actually kind of kept me up all night. Too much caffeine. Other thing I tried was their shrimp vermicelli roll. Peanut sauce not bad. I can tell they made that in house. Over all good food. Decor is very interesting. Before walking in, I actually thought this was a Japanese restaurant. Or maybe it was once a Japanese restaurant. Inside is very clean. Near the bathroom there is a very interesting scooter. Place has high ceiling. So its very comfortable inside. Great for large groups as well. Highly recommend this place. Note on Ford Vehicle. I come here quite often. For some reason, the service today is really off. They forgot my order, waited at least 30 min for seafood noodle soup, and the seafood was mostly squid, a few pieces. Servers kept on telling me the order was coming, in reality they weren't even in ready. Very disappointed, won't be going again in the future. read more

This is the 1st Pho Restaurant I eat so many time because of good foods, clean, and all people services all nice, hopefully the owner keeps that going and never change. Even busy, they still keep the professional working hard and not rush like the other restaurants I've been. read more

First place I had pho many moons ago and they're still going strong, with excellent food and a pleasant atmosphere. Indoor dining with plenty of space. Very good service, someone checking in now and again. Had bun bo hue, spicy but not too hot broth, plenty of meats, & those wider noodles tricky when you haven't used chopsticks for over a year. I ordered from Pho Van through Uber Eats. Had the Honey Lemongrass Chicken and the Crispy Rolls. The chicken was thinly sliced with very good flavor. I would have preferred it a bit spicier, but it was so good I could not complain. Besides, the dish comes with a side of fish sauce, which I love, so that satisfied the entree. The rolls (4) were wider than the typical Vietnamese rolls, but that just made for more great eating. Plus more fish sauce for dipping. I have ordered from several Vietnamese places in Portland. So far this one has the best Crispy Rolls! I will order again on my next flight into town, Gotta try other items on their menu! read more

This is a Vietnamese restaurant though get discriminated by your own people. Called in an hour earlier to order ahead for Ca Nuong which is their well-known dish. Informed the guy in front desk with the reservation. We got seated and 30 mins later, no one greeted us so we decided to ask. We got completely ignored though all the races than Vietnamese are welcomed right away. The server kept throwing the dishes loudly on the table and walked away without saying anything. We had kids so we didn't want to leave to go to another restaurant during busy hours. The type of service here is so wrong on many levels. I've been eating at Pho Van for 30 years and have always had excellent food and service. Still my favorite pho place in town.

The food is delicious and service is quick. They are CLOSED on WEDNESDAY (NOT TUESDAY like website says). We had wonton soup and lemongrass chicken with a couple changes. I say no rice but double chicken. Peanut sauce instead of fish sauce. See photo. Nice oriental decorations and they have booths and tables. Very clean. We go tere at least once a month and highly recommend you go there. read more

Came here two times now and had two very different experiences... I'll explain: The first time, I tried the pho and Cho Tôm (sugarcane shrimp & chicken) wraps. Pho here is on point! love the broth. The wraps were ok. The presentation was artsy with the chicken and shrimp wrapped around the sugarcane and grilled, surrounded by a sea of veggies to make wraps. The nuoc mam sauce was light and tasty. Very Friendly service. Second time we came, we decided to try more of the menu so ate family style between 3. With that being said, can't say the portions were substantial. The Gi Bò (beef salad) was on a small plate so would have appreciated a more generous serving, but still very refreshing and delicious. The order of chicken wings comes with about 6 and they're on the smaller side, but again very flavorful. Ordered the wonton egg noodle soup, which came with charsiu, and minced beef. The broth in this soup was deeelish. They really know soups here. Last but not least we ordered a medium, whole catfish. Impressive dish for catfish, I must say. The fish was perfectly cooked and was served with generous portions of veggies and rice paper to make wraps (as it should for $50). This took over 30 minutes to make. My only one complaint is the sauce that went with the fish; it looked like peanut sauce but was fishy and had lemon grass which was too overpowering. Overall I really like this restaurant. TLDR: try the famous Che Van. It's a bit loud. Great place for "healthy" food. Waitresses very attentive and have good memory. Loud and spacious atmosphere, need to speak up across the table. Waitresses have impressive memory and memorize your order. Menu is pretty straightforward. Mango ice tea: not sweet if that's what you're expecting. It's just tea with a hint of mango. Lemongrass chicken bun: very flavorful chicken and veggies are fresh and crispy. Sweet and sour sauce for mixing is not as flavorful as some other places. Famous Che Van: SO GOOD. It's a must try for sure. Coconut milk is creamy and the contents have different textures. A nice treat to satisfy a sweet tooth. Ginger creme brûlée: creamy creme brûlée and the sugar on the top is just the right amount of sweetness. There's a slight hint of ginger. Turmeric noodle: very flavorful and comes with a side of greens to add to your soup. read more

Worlds worst service, but the food was pretty decent (at least the dish that was warm on arrival). Took over 1 hour from seating to get food ordered and delivered. Once food came I had to search around the place for a server (took a while) and GET A SPOON to eat my Pho with. It appeared several other tables were dealing with the same issues. Meh. My family used to always go to Pho Van since they opened their first location a couple miles north on 82nd Ave. 25+ years ago. It's been a while since we've visited because of COVID and such; however, it's just not the same. Our table was grimy, we had to use our napkins to wipe water off our appetizer plates like their dishwasher isn't on "heat dry", and the hot water for our rice paper came in a pho bowl? Our fish sauce wings looked like they came from an anorexic bird! We all had digestion issues that evening (we went for lunch), which was miserable. Came on a weeknight and there was no wait and we got seated right away. They're open for indoor dining which is awesome and they have a cool plant vibe inside. We ordered the chicken wings for our starters and they were really good! A little skimpy on the portions since some of the wings were super tiny but the flavor was the perfect balance of sweet with garlic and a dash of vinegar. LOVED them overall! For our entrees I got the Pho Ga (Chicken noodle soup) which was absolutely delcious and I added the hot sauce and tamarind sauce which gave the broth a nice spicy and sweet flavor. Perfect comfort food for the rainy cold weather. My husband got the lemongrass chicken which was cooked to perfection and also had amazing bursts of flavor. Pho Van has expanded to the busy 82nd Ave and thrives well in this location. The service is friendly, the new diggs provide for a good "California" like ambiance, the prices are decent, and most of all the food is very good. Their Pho Dac Biet is perfect, the broth was not too overbearing and the meat was cut just right. The pork chop is serious piece of meat, both succulent and juicy. This newer location has its own private parking that is guarded by gates, very segregating indeed. Beware, the place is not that easy to notice but worth a visit anytime during the week. read more

Came here for the banh xeo and its probably the crispiest banh xeo I've ever had which is a plus!! Service was incredibly slow though and makes me not even want to return because we had to ask for things multiple times which was annoying. Also the banh xeo is super oily which is another reason why I docked down a star. Good portion for the price though! read more

Growing up Vietnamese I've had my fair share of pho and while I do think the food here is pretty good and the environment is pretty the overall price for what I'm paying for it is a bit too much for me. Overall I would consider this place authentic and if you are new to Asian cuisine (Vietnamese cuisine to be moe specific) I would definitely give this place a try as it's great for beginners who want to try a new world of flavor! read more

Stopped by this beautiful restaurant on our road trip. The restaurant was decorated so aesthetically and super clean . We ordered pho special, mi quang and bun bo hue. My pho bowl was kind of okay, the broth was watered down. However, their mi quang was to die for and the bun bo hue was super good too. A little disappointing thing is when ordering the coffee, I don't expect to be served the instant coffee especially at the Vietnamese restaurant. read more

My family has been going to Pho Van ever since I can remember. While it has changed a lot since they first opened, the food is still delish! I remember eating here when used to have a colorful dragon mounted on the wall. Now, however, the color scheme has changed to more neutral, earthy tones. It gives off a very serene ambiance. I don't have any picture of my food, but I always get spring rolls, caramelized chicken wings, lean brisket pho, and an avocado smoothie. And I am never disappointed! I give this establishment a 4 because I frequently crave their food, but they're portions have gotten smaller and their prices have gone up. This is the first time I encountered this kind of food and service in Portland and this is really disappointing me. I ordered a grilled catfish togo, which costs 54$. However, when it arrived at my house, it looked burned and tasted burned as well, as you can see in the photo. Besides, when we cut it, the meat inside is dry (I assume because they kept it in the fridge for too long) and cold (since it is not heated enough). I don't mind having a smaller size than the amount I paid, but having under standard quality is unacceptable for me. I did contact the restaurant to try to have it replaced however they asked me to return the catfish in full size. How can I do it when we had to cut it open to know how bad it was? They tried to explain how well the food was cooked, now 2 out of 4 people eating encounter stomachache and diarrhea right after eating the food. (Given the fact that we only had that food for dinner only, we did not have any side dishes at all). This is terrible restaurant with terrible food and service. I would definitely never come back for my own health safety. read more

Portland is do lucky to have huge Vietnamese culture. Its really trendy or hip in Portland to eat Pho. First if you want real authentic pho go to Pho Hung few blocks down 82nd blvd. They have true authentic Pho. The broth is what makes it so special. Get the real pho. Its #1 superbowl. Everything in it. This place used to be the place to eat Pho but most customers now are hipsters from Portland. If you don't see Asian people eating at the restaurant you are not doing justice.
