We were in the area and decided to drop in for early dinner based on yelp reviews - 4 stars. First impressions were that it was a casual dining restaurant, no air conditioning so it was pretty warm. There were floor fans which were positioned at some tables. Our server was patient and polite. He obliged us with a high chair and paper for our toddler to draw on. Small Vietnamese restaurant located right off of 101, and near my work. I almost always get their Pho, but this time I tried their Bo Luc Lac. The meat was a little dry and hard to chew, but the seasoning was decent. Lots of veggies and Java rice accompanied the meat. They are never shy on their servings. Even their Pho comes with plenty of bean sprouts and herbs as sides. It's also super creamy, as if they used heavy cream in addition to sweetened condensed. Tasty in a generic sort of way, but not worth the calories. - 3/5: The Pad Thai is not Pad Thai: it's chow mein, with noodles that happen to be in the shape of Pad Thai noodles. Service is pretty slow, we waited over 20 minutes for our food which is long by regular pho standards. One "odd" order we got was one of the guys wanted buffalo wings, not typically a Vietnamese place order. The wings that came came with the sauce on the side, so you can dip as much or as less as you want. The wings were surprising really good, lightly bread, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I branched out and got the #30 mi Quan. I enjoyed the meat and rice crackers in there. Decent food and good service but it's not a great location. Parking is difficult if they are at all busy (looks like just a few spots for the restaurant) and do not leave anything in your car, as the neighborhood is kinda dodgy. I don't think they have any air conditioning (or if they do, it was not working) so avoid if it's very hot. We had an order of spring rolls: Hot and not greasy, well prepared and tasty. Their Bo Kho broth is okay, but not nearly as flavorful compared to other Pho restaurants. Bo Kho is a dark soup but it did not give me that smack of flavor. I honestly don't know why this place has 4 stars??? If you're looking for good Vietnamese food in the area, please don't come here! How is this place still in business??? So for a full hour we were the only two customers. Uh, YIKES!? The restaurant is located in probably the worst place to have a restaurant at, the location is absolutely horrible. Off on this random road running along the 101 freeway, there's literally no other food businesses there. From what I see, it's mostly just commercial businesses and completely random barren sites. The restaurant has 5 parking spaces for itself, so I guess if you ever come when they're busy then you might have to park on the streets or elsewhere. But, as I said earlier, my friend and I were the only ones there so there was plenty of parking for our 2 cars lol. The service itself was SHITTY, capital on the SHIT. You know, considering how we were the only ones there, you'd assume we'd get at least decent service, but NO. Honestly the guy serving us looked and sounded completely miserable, like he was working there against his own will. Completely terrible. No enthusiasm, no smile whatsoever. We shared an order of their house pho and the mongolian beef which came with a side of white rice. The pho is not good. The broth was weak and not even that hot when it came out. Meat was decent though. The mongolian beef was alright, it wasn't bad but it wasn't good. I would take that over the pho. IDK, thinking back, I just kind of cringe at the thought of this place and my experience there. The food and place just felt so grimey. I don't know if it's because we were the only ones there or the location or the service, but this place did not settle in well with me and I will most definitely NOT be coming back. Pho Van is most notable for its industrial location nearby some of the tech companies of Santa Clara and for an extensive noodle soup offering including their Mi Quang. I stopped by due to the close proximity to the airport (~10 minutes) and found the out of the way location quiet but soon occupied by a variety of Friday night customers. Service is typical brusque and direct, but the food came out reasonable quickly and the storefront, despite the industrial location, is utilitarian but clean. Our order: Rare Beef Pho Noodle Soup - $8.50. Only one is available and its offered with rare steak on the side. Noodle and temperature are fine but the soup broth is forgettable and the cuts of beef aren't anything to write home about. Overall disappointing. Hu Tieu Nam Vang - $8.50. I don't order Mi Quang much so opted for their Hu Tieu noodles. It's served with clear noodles and offered dry with broth on the side. Presentation is decent but flavors were disappointing. The pork bone broth doesn't have a pork bone but instead some pork spareribs. Flavor is mild. The noodles were fine and the lean pork, garlic, and liver were all present but the dry version has an addictive nam vang soy based sauce that was completely absent. It just tasted like cooked, not seasoned, meats on top of noodles with a mild broth. Very disappointing. Won ton noodle soup - $7.00. I think we were accidentally charged $8.00 for this but I didn't notice until we left. A large bowl of broth, cut Bok choy and several won tons filled the bowl. The won rim meat was dark, hard, and definitely not freshly made, likely frozen. A few lean pork slices are included but this was a poor rendition. Reminded me of trying to get won ton noodle soup on the islands, but this is the Bay Area! Overall, while I was intrigued by Pho Van's location, I couldn't help but be disappointed by the execution. Pho Van opened some time last week in the space where PJ's Deli used to be. It's very close to work so I decided to give it a try. I was hoping to get some vermicelli with grilled pork and eggroll, but they did not have any vermicelli dishes on the menu. The menu seemed to be a mix of Vietnamese (pho, spring rolls, broken rice) and Chinese (chow mein, chow fun) and they also offer pad thai. I ended up getting the BBQ pork chow mein and an order of eggrolls. The eggrolls seemed to be Vietnamese style and were served with a light sweet-and-sour dipping sauce along with some pickled carrot, pickled radish, a couple of slices of cucumber, and a leaf of lettuce. They were fried crispy on the outside but there was something mushy which appeared to be undercooked dough on the inside. They were pretty tasty though. The chow mein was pretty good and had lots of sliced pork, although it did not look or taste like it had been barbecued, it seemed more like thin cut slices of roasted pork loin. They are still getting some kinks worked out since they opened so recently -- they do not yet accept credit cards for instance, they accept cash only until they get their credit card machine working. Also, there is no soy sauce on the tables, I requested some and the lady who I assume is the owner brought out a little dish with soy sauce in it. It looks pretty nice, they seem to have cleaned it up and repainted, appears to be cleaner than PJ's Deli used to be. Hopefully they re-did the kitchen as well as they did the dining area. They had both doors propped open (front of store and side door) and a couple of guys with leafblowers came by and were making a huge racket while I was eating lunch. It didn't seem to bother the owner because she didn't close the doors -- maybe she's used to it? They also have the steam table that was in PJ's Deli and when I went up to pay I noticed they had a sign for ordering from the steam table, but all I saw in it was some fried rice, some vegetable chow mein, and a tray of what looked like grilled chicken breasts.
