I don't think it's fair to pass judgement on a restaurant during the first month they are open, let alone the first few days. Regardless of past experience in the business (or not)... there are always kinks and issues. Pho Viet & Cafe had a *LOT* of issues during their opening days. The food quality was not one of them. Service was terrible and glacially slow. But I'm happy to report that all of those issues appear to be resolved. Today I returned for another bowl of pho. My order was taken promptly after I was seated and the food was delivered sooner than I expected. I was with a large group and they handled our separate checks easily. I don't think there was a single mistake with anyone's order. HUGE bowl of steaming hot pho. Large plate of toppings. Sriachi (sp??) and chili oil on the table. No basil this time (I guess it's out of season). It was as good as I remembered the first time, with a rich & savory broth. Lots of noodles, cooked well and not gummy or too soft. The beef was sliced thin and melts in your mouth. I'm not ashamed to say I ordered a large... and I ate the WHOLE bowl. I'll be back to Pho Viet & Cafe for lunch again... especially during the cold winter months. read more

Yes, yes, yes! My friend and I were in Bend for a quick trip. We hiked all that day and we're hiking the next day so we didn't want anything heavy but, we wanted something that was hearty and filling. We both decided we wanted pho, so look no further than Yelp to help us find the perfect pho place. It was a 5 minute drive from our hotel so we were in. As soon as we walked in the door we were warmly greeted by not one, not two, but three gentlemen! We decided that we wanted to do a takeout order because we were exhausted. They sat us at a table and gave us menus to look over. They brought us ice water for while we waited. I ordered the p7 and my friend ordered the p3, he wanted to try tendon. I also ordered a Thai iced tea (my friend didn't order a drink but they gave him a nice cup of hot tea). The order was ready to go in under ten minutes. The gentleman handed me the bag. It was well packed but boy was it heavy. We got a warm greeting goodbye. Back at our hotel room we unwrapped our pho. Holy smokes this was a ginormous portion. Lots of noodles, meat, sprouts, Thai basil, etc. The broth was super flavorful and delicious. So a+ for the pho because boy was it good. Also A+ for the Thai iced tea, I sucked it down and wished I had another whole glass of it. All in all, I now wish I was in bend more because I would go here at least once a week. The food was really good. I had never been here before as I just moved to Bend. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I ordered Pad Thai. It was served super quickly, hot and with fresh vegetables. Nice sized portion too. Seems many locals frequent this spot as the staff greeted them by name. A generous and kind random local bought me a iced pour-over coffee drink too which was super awesome. Thanks kind stranger! It was a chilly night and we were exhausted from a long day hiking. This was a short walk from our hotel and I'm so glad we picked pho. PROS: Service was prompt and friendly. Food was awesome and super hot and delicious. Had 2 mixed pho and steamed spring rolls - sauce was to die for. Atmosphere is fun and inviting. CONS: a little noisy so don't expect a quiet date night. The Family! My lady and I love the family, this place is one of our favorite in bend everyone in there treats you like family, and there is always smiles. The food is perfect and always makes my day! Pho is amazing whether it's chicken or beef or shrimp I've had them all! And Tsing Tao beer always hits the spot with a V1 platter. I always suggest this place to friends I love it! Vegan pho makes for a happy belly. Visiting Bend we were with a meat eating friend who isn't exactly flexible with eating veggie stuff. Luckily we both enjoy pho and I was able to find a place (the only place I think) in Bend that has vegan pho. The restaurant was nice and clean. Not really a huge fan of sitting by a wall of photographed meals which are all meat, but expected in an Asian restaurant. The pho was good. I think they did a good job with the veggie broth and it had a ton of veggies in it. Granted, I aways like my pho spicy so my broth stipulations are slightly lower than some. Our friend got some tradition pho and enjoyed his meal as well. If we find ourselves in Bend craving pho again, I'll know where to go. read more

The pho here is, without a doubt in my mind, the best thing you can eat in Bend. The meat is tender, the broth delicious, the condiments wonderful, it's n addictive experience, served promptly and affordably. The rest of their menu is generally good, but outside of their soups, often skimpy on the portions. The finally arrived banh mi is the only real disappointment, the pate there is just not up to snuff, and on the whole I make better banh mi myself at home. Service was great. The waiter was nice and funny. He made small conversation and gave us advice on things to do in the area. Space was small but still able to seat our party of 10. For starters, we got the shrimp and pork salad rolls and the baked mussels. Both were really good. The mussels had a little kick to it and you could taste the coconut, ginger, and nuts. Pho was delicious. Didn't need to add much to my broth. Thai iced tea was good too. They also serve alcoholic beverages. Warning, they only accept cash but they have an ATM inside the restaurant. We've eaten here at least 6 times, and it is consistent. I really enjoy any of their phos, especially the chicken pho. They use all breast meat and the broth is savory and not too salty, which I appreciate. It's so comforting in the winter. Their spring rolls are wonderfully fresh and have just the right amount of herbs. The imperial rolls are OK. I think the filling is a bit bland and mushy, but the outside is perfectly crispy. My main complaint would be the price, it's almost $6 for two rolls. My husband loves the banh mi sandwiches, which he calls the "bomby" sandwiches. I tried the one with the pate and various meats; it was tasty and definitely has a strong liver flavor. The chicken and pork sandwiches are a nice alternative with a honey lemongrass marinade, and the price is amazing! With the fresh veggies and crusty fluffy french baguette, they're totally worth it, and you can call it in and they'll have it ready in like 10 minutes. Cheaper than fast food and way healthier, too! I recently had a dish I didn't enjoy, and they gave me some free spring rolls to compensate, which was much appreciated since I was pretty hungry later that night. This is the best place for pho. I am picky with my pho and this place is the best. The broth is not over powered with flavor and tastes like a natural broth. There is nothing like a warm bowl of this stuff, it is filling and sort of a comfort food. The service is also great. 2.5 - 3 stars I feel like some of the Yelp reviewers are being generous with their stars when it comes to restaurants in Bend. It's either that, or they haven't tasted anything better, or I'm going on an off day. It was a cold night so moms dragged me here. The service was nice with one guy but the other wouldn't look you in the eyes. I saw the owner come out but just to say hello to a table he knew. There were a few tables occupied and also a few to go orders. The fresh spring rolls and fried spring rolls were good. I've had better peanut sauce elsewhere but nothing a little rooster sauce can't fix. The chicken noodle pho was really bland; nothing special. The pate and cured fatty bacon bahn mi was disgusting. The bread was not fresh, the taste in the bacon and the texture was off putting, it tasted stale and dry. Maybe I just ordered the wrong sandwich. The crispy noodle seafood was okay, I enjoyed the crispy noodles, the seafood was chewy. Maybe I should just come for the beef pho next time as most of the reviews are pretty positive. Since winter is near, it sounds appealing but this meal wasn't the greatest, not memorable and if I return it's because they're practically the only Vietnamese restaurant in town. UPDATE**: Got dragged back by the Moms. Ordered the roasted red pork banh mi and it was better than the first. The bread was fresher. But I can still get better banh mi elsewhere. Ordered the fried rice for Itty Bitty - never tasted fried rice like this before. It had ginger in it. Moms ordered a new dish with thin yellow egg noodles and minced tofu because even though she asked for minced pork the server insisted on minced tofu. Bend finally has a Vietnamese restaurant! I was so excited to give it a try. I absolutely love H Tiu Thp Cm (rice noodle with shrimp, pork, fish balls and chicken leg) but I didn't see it on the menu. I thereby ordered one with only beef (sorry I didn't get the name..i'll edit soon), Pho Gà (chicken noodle soup) for my 5yr old son, and an order of spring rolls. [Oops, I guess Asian text isn't supported.] I was surprised when the rolls were brought out that they were deep fried .. perhaps I didn't read the menu thoroughly. Noodles were brought out in a timely fashion - they were busy (most tables had patrons), too. Another surprise, cilantro instead of basil ... a good substitution but not the same. Our server (an older man) had misunderstood me, however, and brought an extra bowl and spoon, gesturing to my son. I tried to go with the flow and encouraged my little guy to share with me but he loves his own so I motioned for the server and ordered it again. It was brought out quite quickly and the server (a young woman) explained how hot it was and expressed her concern that he might spill. I appreciated her concern. The broth, noodles, veggies and the accompanying rolls were all good but not the best I've had. We will definitely be back. They are newly open and perhaps some bugs just need to be worked out. I am delighted to have Pho in Bend and will definitely support them in hopes they stick around. I wouldn't order the rolls again, however. This place is an amazing world of flavors and freshness. It stands alone in its niche, as nothing comes close to this type and quality of food around here. The menu can be overwelming upon your first visit. If you are not familiar with this sort of cuisine, study all the pictures they provide all over the walls and take your time in ordering. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There soups are incredible...best wonton soup I have ever had (what a rich and delicious broth) and what a gigantic bowl full, it's enough for 2 or 3. They also have deilicious fruit drinks that are a must try. I love the Vermicelli dishes and all the different fresh egg noodle and crunchy noodle dishes. We have now eaten here three times. The first time the food was amazing and the service was horrible. Since then the food has been amazing and the service better and better. We have tried different Pho bowls, but our favorite two have been the seafood and stew/brisket #12. They have been fantastic and make any slow service totally worth dealing with. The apps are yummy too, especially the rice paper spring rolls. Our last time visiting was tonight. The owner was talking to us about him hiring more staff and has been looking on Yelp and taking the reviews serious. After mixed reviews from friends we finally went for dinner here to check things out. After having fantastic Pho in Seattle recently, we were sadly disappointed that things are still in disarray at Bend's first Pho house. First we had to wait, no big deal usually. The polite owner said it would be 10 minutes. After 25 minutes of standing there we decided to order to go. People seated when we got there were still waiting for their food. The owner said 15 minutes for to go to be ready. 35 minutes later we finally left with our food. Thats a total of 60 minutes. Holy sh.... I ordered Pho w/ eye of round, and what I got after driving home was the combo Pho w/ meatballs and tendons( disgusting!! ). The eye of round was half fat. A smile and courtesy doesn't make up for poor service and food. Are our locals so starved for a new ethnic restaurant that they are willing to put up with this??? Really? These owners need to rethink their business practice, and get things turned around soon. Make the trip to Portland or Seattle for the real deal. The owner makes anybody who walks through the door feel like they are his best friend and the staff is quick to make sure you are taken care of. Pretty rare finding a Vietnamese restaurant way out in Bend, but they seem to do it well. Walking up it looks like a diner or a family style restaurant, but the food is quite good. We had a large party and were seated immediately. Surprised that the only restaurant serving Vietnamese food was relatively empty, but for the love of the food right? Although I don't usually like to review the service, I felt overwhelmed by the owner of the restaurant. He knew we were from out of town, he knew we had Vietnamese speakers in the group and he knew we were staying at a nearby resort, therefore he believed that pushing drinks and expensive menu items was acceptable? The food on the contrary was delicious. Maybe due to the multiple shots taken prior, but the pork chop rice plate was tender and well marinated. The addition of the two eggs sunny side up eggs was a nice touch. But then again, what isn't good when smothered in a runny egg? I ordered the Pho Tai Chin, which is a pretty generic pho. I thought it was pretty flavorful and the portion was fair. The tai (steak) and the chin (brisket) seemed of decent quality, but the soup was a little bland. Nothing a little sriracha and oyster sauce can't take care of though. I'm not sure how many Vietnamese restaurants are in the area, but we followed our yelp instincts to Pho Viet. For better or worse we got some much needed sustenance after a long day of golf and drinking. Will most likely try something new if I'm ever back in the area. read more

We stop in here weekly for Pho for lunch (probably 5 times since moving to Bend recently). It is usually packed, and the service is always fast and friendly. The owner has been there every time we've gone, and we have had the same nice waiter every time. I mentioned I liked cilantro, and he brought out extra promptly. I wish I could comment on the rest of their food, but the Pho is so yummy we have not tried anything else. We have also been to Sweet Saigon downtown, and it is identical (in fact, the same owner from Pho Viet was there the day we went). I believe you pay $1 more though for Pho, due to the high dollar rent downtown. Same exact soup, and this place is closer to our house. read more

We recently moved from Austin, TX back to Bend and were despairing of finding some good Vietnamese noodles. Thankfully we found Pho Viet & Cafe serving from a stand at one of the festivals downtown and have since been to the restaurant quite a few times. I like it for all of the reasons that the other reviewers have stated. *Really* like it. But.... I have to knock it one (tempted to knock it two stars) for the price. Bowls of Pho are what, $7.95? and a bowl of Bun is $11.95 I believe (please correct if I'm wrong, going on memory here). I realize they probably go to Portland for supplies and we are a captive audience here in Bend, but wow... with a drink you can easily be looking at a $15 lunch, with a wife and a kid you're over $30... for Vietnamese fast food. I realize that I won't see $6 Pho and $7 Bun like in Austin but this is definitely past my pain threshold for lunch and limits the number of times I'll be back. Like I said... I love these guys and we'll be back. But more like (1x) a month rather than (1x) a week and I'm bummed about that :) read more

Coming back to Bend, after a decade of traveling all over the world, a lot of that time in South East Asia, this place is hands down the best Vietnamese and I'd go as far to say the best food in town. When you walk in, the atmosphere screams authenticity and family. The owner, Tam, has custom tailored his restaurant's menu to not only keep me interested (I've been over 15 times at this point in time) but also keep me constantly impressed. Every dish has been amazing! The service is quick but not lack luster and the drink menu is also on par. The owner is doing something absolutely incredible and I hope that he never changes his establishment's "formula". Keep it up Tam, you are doing great things. My wife and I have been to Bend twice and both times we have eaten here. Their Pho is delicious and the service is very friendly. There is a dinner rush at 6:30-7pm but almost all the orders are for take out, so you won't have to wait too long anyway. Highly recommended! read more
