The food is not bad, but pretty mediocre. Not great, though for a grand opening. The portions were poor for the vegetable spring roll for it to be so costly imo. 3.25 may not seem like much to many but when you've been to many Vietnamese restaurants as I have, there's no way that my vegetable spring roll should be so sparse and the width of 2.5 pinkies and the length of a small egg roll. Nah. My tofu pho was ok, but again, the portions were so small. The tables were very cheap looking, and I'm just gonna assume that they're still trying to get into the groove of things. Overall speaking, I'm not that impressed by this place. My boyfriend and I would like to find somewhere for an instant pho fixed yesterday, and we asked Yelp to pick one for us. And here we were. Beef pho is pretty decent, I like their soup (not too salty compared with other places I have tried). Thai tea, however, is a disaster. You can tell it's made by mixed powder at the first taste. To make it worse, the kitchen added too much water so it tasted bland. Seriously, I couldn't distinguish it from water if I drink it with eyes closed. Service was quick, environment was OK (old but clean), and waiter was nice (though forgot our orders for drink). I might come back again for their pho, but that's it. Not recommend others. read more

Upon entering pho zen I noticed the atmosphere was very welcoming; the lighting and aroma were delightful. The menu was large and very readable. The shrimp pho was very delicious and so were the spring rolls. The peanut sauce was nice and warm. We had chocolate pie for desert. It was dark chocolate with a very thick whipped cream. I work close by here and so this was always my go-to place to order from when I don't bring lunch (which is very regularly ). The noodle soups are decent for this area but I did order beef pho togo one time and got chicken pho when I open it! They egg rolls have changed since I first had them and I preferred the ones back then. The spring rolls are ok but too pricey for the size. I typically order a rice vermicelli with grilled pork or shrimps since I think they taste the best out of everything. 2nd would be the rice with grilled stuff. The reason I gave them 3 stars besides messing up on my order, is the fact that, one time I went over to order just a side of their fish sauce. I even said I will pay for it and don't mind how much the charge, the waiter ran in back and after they "discuss" a bit, he said he can't sell it for bc ita reserved for orders. I actually had the liberty of dining in on 07/23/2015 during lunch hour, I was a little skeptical at first based on a couple of negative reviews I've read, however I ended up going with the noodle bowl with brisket prepared well done, is was very good and I was thoroughly pleased with my selection the only issue you may have is if you choose to dine during lunch time keep in mind that parking is very congested, and you may wait a bit to order extra water or a an extra serving, I feel like a few more employees should be added during lunch hour, other than the minor issues stated the food is great!!! read more

Actually, this restaurant is not even worth 1 star. Bad and slow service. They got rid of the small size Pho, and increased the price of regular and large size, but less noodle and meat than before. They even served bad quality beef balls. I'll never come back to this place again. read more

We visited this place on Sunday and the service was very slow... however the food was DELICIOUS!. The sandwiches were perfect and the pho very tasty. What to say about this place.. it used to be so good but now it is so bad. The shrimp in the spring rolls are usually bad and smell like ammonia(which means dont eat unless u want to be sick. The peanut sauce for the spring rolls is also not very good, its watered down, i can only assume its because the owner is trying to save some pennies. The prices have gone WAY up since the beginning, this place has been only opened a couple of years but the prices have gone up at least 4 times, the price for a bowl of sup par pho here is NUTS. You can go to bellaire and get a better bowl of pho pretty much anywhere. It really is a shame as this place used to be my go to place to eat in this area, but now i will never go back nor recommend it to anyone. The cleanliness has also gone way down, i have seen the chef not wearing gloves, no hair net, nothing to protect the food from their dirtiness. the waiters are rude and unhelpful, they have no desire to make your experience a good one. Okay first at all, there's a discrimination here! As i see, I'm the only Vietnamese customer in a restaurant at that time, the staffs looked around and checked every table how customers feel and the taste of food, but nobody asked me anything (even it was not busy at all) ! Secondly, I ordered small size of Pho and side of an egg in small bowl which is simply normal and popular in Vietnam and even all Pho restaurant in Bellaire will understand how it could be, however, a lady who took me order didn't understand (i speak vietnamese to her and she's vietnamese too!), i tried to explain but look like she still has no clue so i said "that's fine, nevermind", but she said "it's ok, we can make it"! I was like OK! I saw her walked to cashier counter and asked something to 2 other staffs about my order and they started laughing (absolutely i knew they talk about my order, come on, i know Vietnamese, guys!) That made me feel unrespected! Calming down and waiting for my brunch! O-M-G! An egg is as small as a quailegg, honestly, it's even smaller than a meatball cut in half (because I order rare beef and meatball), the broth was bland, the meat was only 4 slices, and they just gave little of vegetable (basil, beansprouts, and NO ngo gai!)Lastly, when I checked out at the counter, a lady glanced at me like a weirdo due to weird order (for them!!!), when she recognized me uncomfortable she smiled and said "thank you" (sorry, it's too late!!) the bottom line is this's my first time also my last time to come here!!! read more

Nope! I had the lemongrass beef vermicelli and the wonton soup. The peanuts that came with the vermicelli were roasted or something, but they were dark brown and tasted burned. The noodles were pre-cut (I hope, cause they looked pre-chewed except for a few big chunks of stuck-together noodles which had obviously been cut), but the beef was in one big piece! It was too stringy to pull apart, so I had to cut it up. There were also big slices of sautéed onions which were still crunchy. I ended up picking those out. The fish sauce was so-so. I hate wasting food but was pretty turned off by the noodles, so I was glad that I'd also ordered the soup. But the broth was salty chicken broth and heavy on the cilantro. I hate to post a bad review, but this restaurant really needs to step up its game. Either learn how to make a decent banh mi or remove it from the menu. This was the worst sandwich I have ever had. I ordered the grilled pork banh mi to go. A very basic order. First strange thing was that it was served in a styrofoam box. When I opened the box, I understood why. The bread was sopping wet and dripping, and I could tell it was soft bread even before it had gotten wet. Banh mi bread must be crusty, and there is no reason for the fillings to be dripping juices. I still tried to give it a shot, soaking up the juices with some napkins and and taking a bite. The grilled pork was overly sweet, the vegetables were limp, and there was no overcoming the sad state of the bread and inexplicable moisture of its contents. For a newly opened 'vietnamese soup' cafe, their ingredients of their pho recipe is of extremely "high quality" when it comes to temperature and taste. Broth is seasoned very well, bean sprouts were rather fresh, and the proportions are priced reasonably well for small, regular, large. I would strongly recommend Pho Zen as the place to go if one is a first timer trying this cuisine and I will definitely be a return customer, as a matter of fact.
