What a super cute place with friendly service and heavenly pies. The ladies who own this bakery are adorable and so very funny. We learned about Pie Heaven from their amusing self made videos on Facebook and finally took the drive out to Mayport to buy some pies. We wanted every single one on the pie status list, they all look so tempting. But we just two of us, we had to make choices. We settled on one full savory, chicken pot pie, one full sweet, salted caramel apple, and slices of chocolate and margarita key lime. Sadly they had just sold out of the salted caramel apple, but we were happy to take a regular apple pie. OH MY... they were all so amazing. We started with our slices because we could just not wait. The chocolate on a pastry crust was so rich and creamy and the key lime with a graham cracker crust had just the right amount of tang and actually tasted like a good margarita. So yummy. We heated up the chicken pot pie for dinner and it was beautiful. We wouldn't have minded a little more gravy but at the same time appreciated it being packed full of good chicken and vegetables with fresh herbs. The apple pie tasted like fresh picked apples cooked up perfectly and not too sweet. The pastry crust is so perfect, light and delicate but sturdy enough to stand up to the hearty filling and flavor. These homemade pies cost more than your regular grocery store pies, but they are absolutely worth the price and the drive out to Mayport to get them. Made a special trip with my daughter for a look at the selection of pies for the day. While we had fun perusing the menu, we settled on the two we came to try: Country Chocolate Pie Chicken Pot Pie Now, these are not inexpensive so if you are not sure of your selection, you can buy individual slices and try them before buying a full pie. We splurged, bought whole pies and were really glad we did. The Country Chocolate was decadent rich and delightfully sweet without overdoing the chocolate or the sweetness. A little goes a long way because it is so rich. The Chicken Pot Pie was exactly the opposite. While it was delicious, savory with a hint of sweetness, I could have done with a double portion. Of course, I probably needed more than one pie to satisfy my two teens, but unlike the chocolate pie, I could have had more. Either way, a lot of good choices. If you're an "old-timer" like me, you may recall Sisters restaurant in Orange Park years ago. When visiting the Jacksonville area @ 1988, before I moved here, my best friend from college took me to all the places she thought I'd enjoy. First on the list was the Palace Saloon in Fernandina. I still love that Pirates Punch! Second on the list was Sisters. My first visit spurred many more trips to this quaint ladies who lunch spot. Sisters was the kind of place where gray haired grannies took their daughters and granddaughters for a bite on Saturdays. It was a girly, frilly sort of place with brunch fare and yummy desserts. Pie Heaven reminds me so much of Sisters! My boyfriend had dropped by to pick up whole pies for the holidays a couple of times...they were huge and very tasty. One recent Saturday we decided that I needed to check out Pie Heaven myself. And so we headed over to Mayport Road to grab a "Date Box". We were looking at Pie Heaven's FaceBook page and discovered this Valentine's month special consisting of your choice of 2 savory entree personal size pies and 2 dessert pie slices for $20. Not a bad deal! The FaceBook page has some colorful and charming videos of the ladies working and having fun at Pie Heaven. We found the atmosphere in person to be much the same! Pie Heaven is located in a small blue building fairly close to the Mayport Navy base. Inside you'll find several tables for eating in, but apparently the to-go and catering business is really what makes Pie Heaven tick. We chose the Southwest Quiche and Chicken Pot Pie, along with a slice each of Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie and Coconut Custard Pie. We arrived about 30 minutes before closing, so a few options had already sold out. We took our Date Box goodies home to heat and eat. The quiche was not bad, but nothing to write home about either. I could be wrong, but the mushrooms appeared to have been sliced and added raw to the egg mixture. I've baked quiche myself many times and I discovered that what happens with raw mushrooms is the water content tends to leech out, making the quiche a little mushy. My Chicken Pot Pie had crust on the bottom, sides and top, which is a big plus in my book! The crust itself was very flakey and flavorful. I would eat an old shoe baked in this crust lol You would never eat a frozen pot pie again after feasting on this homemade goodness! Okay now the sweets! We thought the Pecan Pie was tasty, but the texture of the filling was a little runny. The Coconut Custard unfortunately was not a hit with me :( It had a hint of what seemed to be lemon extract instead of vanilla...although I love lemon, I didn't like it in coconut pie. I'm looking forward to sampling more Pie Heaven treats and I do recommend the whole pies for special events (or any day, really, because you deserve it!). I broke containment during this pandemic on Wednesday to pick up one large and three small chicken pot pies, one Southwest Quiche, one Coconut Custard and one Country Chocolate dessert pies. If you call ahead, they will bring the pies out to your car. I chose to venture inside to add a few more pies add to the call-in order. They have floor markings to help keep patrons the proper social distance apart. Every pie was delicious and they tasted like the best homemade pies I've ever eaten. We've had all of the sweet pies, nothing savory, but our favorites are the triple berry, caramel apple and strawberry rhubarb. The ingredients that they use in these pies are top notch, it doesn't get any better. Somehow I feel better about myself when I get that organic cherry slice. I feel like it wasn't as crisp, mainly because the pies were pre made in lager batches. It was still very very good! I took another pot pie for take out. The key lime pie was phenomenal. I have been stalking Pie Heaven for a while. I was playing hooky from work and chose to go to the beach and ended up at Hannah Park. Stopped by Pie Heaven after my beach day, late in the afternoon,and decided to try the Chicken Pot Pies and a dessert slice of pie. They sent us home with some warming directions for the pot pies and we selected a chocolate custard and lemon merengue. The pot pies were amazing! And the perfect thing after the long drive home and removing all the sand. Lots of chicken and veggies with an amazing crust! Dessert had to wait a bit since the pot pies were so filling. We sampled the chocolate custard and lemon merengue as a bed time snack and they did not disappoint. Would love to rate this 5 stars but just can't. It's not that the pies aren't tasty but our first, and most likely last, visit is mostly due to the cost for the quantity. $14 for a piece of pie and a teeny tiny tart just seems a tad expensive. The berry tart was good but I would say the crust to fruit ratio was 80/20 with 80% being crust. I love pie crust, don't get me wrong, but I also want to be able to taste the fruit as well. Also the fact that they won't cut a slice of pie on some of them made no sense. I could get half a pie or a quarter, but not a slice? Friends wanted two slices of pie and ended up spending $22 as no individual slices could be had and they had to buy a quarter of a pie and an entire 6" pie. We may sound cheap, and maybe that's the case, but just think the pricing is a deterrent. Lovely spot and very friendly staff. read more
