I was expecting this place to be a restaurant, but i walked into a bakery/butcher/local market and restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised. The meat in the butcher case was so fresh and looked like perfect cuts of meat. They sell local harvested and fresh made treats. There is also plenty of seating, and even a small wine and spirits counter for your alcohol needs. Ordering food was simple and easy. Staff were so helpful with answering any questions i had. I picked up some lunch for my coworker and opted to pick me up a sweet treat from the bakery. I ordered a brownie. Man oh man, the brownie was so rich, chocolatey and oh so rich. It had crunchy chocolate morsels inside and a smooth rich chocolate icing. It was a little on the sweeter side, but not overly sweet that i couldn't enjoy it. The food was nice however everything else horrible! They have no idea how to take care of customers ...a woman ringing the register could barely figure out what buttons to push! We took our number and went outside because it was a beautiful day, the waitress or we thought she was a waitress brought our food out and we asked for silverware she said "this is a self service restaurant". That's nice. Tell us after! Did I mention they asked for tips when you are being rung out ...between the two giant refrigerators? One person ringing out about 12 customers... we had to wait. After that, we came back in to get some dessert... We bought three macaroons they were like rocks! The restaurant is divided very poorly, there's no instruction, you don't know where to get anything, you don't know where to put your plate when you're done, when you first walk in, there's a bar then on the other side there's a counter then there's a bakery area then there's a meat refrigerator then there's a fresh food refrigerator. Just go in and experience for yourself. Oh yes, the funniest thing is this is an old kosher butcher and restaurant.... The man sitting in the inside area, literally had a pork tenderloin sandwich, the size of a record! Ridiculous portion... he asked if we would like to eat some. He had plenty. We've driven by for a couple months and finally decided to stop in for lunch. The inside has changed a little since it's years as Kohns, but it's mostly the same. Same coolers, same deli counter, same tables. The familiarity was nice. We placed our orders at the counter, reminiscent of the past. A pastrami sandwich for me and a cheeseburger for my friend. Because the sandwiches were a little pricy ($14 each) we both skipped sides. My pastrami was excellent. It's still Lennys famous recipe, which is all you really need to say about that. The burger was really just a burger (with lettuce, tomato, and pickle). You could tell from the texture that the quality of the meat was higher than you normally get, which my friend appreciated it, but he said it wasn't worth the price. After an early flight, we tried this place for breakfast. We were also low-key celebrating a birthday and because of previous reviews, we were looking forward to amazing food. The staff was very friendly and willing to make things right (within the things they could control) but ultimately, the food did not taste fresh. My husband prefers biscuits and gravy and he reported the biscuits were hard and dry. I tried the eggs with vegetables and potatoes but the ingredients were not well incorporated, so the meal was less enjoyable than expected. I read up on Pierce Creek in a couple of different articles, about the cattle ranch and the food truck and such so we decided to try it on a Friday night before Christmas. It is back off old Olive at the prior location of a deli, off the beaten path a bit. Walking in we were greeted at the front desk area by a woman who asked if we'd been in before. We hadn't so she explained what to do. Go to the far cold case were there was a menu and a register tucked in the corner next to a small hot case with a few food items in metal pans. She also indicated there was a wine tasting, we weren't drinking that night, so we passed on that. There were customers ahead of us, so we reviewed the menu and some of the signs that had specials on them but generated questions, so we waited our turn. The woman behind the counter was friendly and helpful, answering all of our questions. I had wanted a non-meat option and there weren't any that appealed to me, so I ordered a salad and the soup of the day which was a tomato stew is what I think she called it. Husband ordered the burnt end and macaroni out of the hot case. There is a bar in the middle of the space with tables on the other side from the cold cases so we found a seat there. Some people were being waited on by the bartender and I think they were there for the happy hour. It was over when we got there so that would explain service differences, being waited on vs. ordering at the counter. Our food came out pretty quickly, my husband's burnt ends and macaroni was deemed ok. My salad was quite large so I split it in half to take the rest home. It was spring mix with onions, peppers, croutons, and tomatoes. The tomato soup/stew came with cornbread that was quite good. The soup itself I did not care for, it had a gelatinous texture and had carrots and potatoes? I'm not quite sure. All the staff was quite friendly and nice and I liked the local aspect of the products they offered for sale. The space layout was odd to me and felt empty. I will try a burger next time since they are cattle ranch owners. I just didn't want red meat that night. read more

What a fun surprise! If I could rate this place as a 6/5 I would. I'd been following Pierce Creek on social media for awhile, and knew I needed to try their beef soon, but didn't realize their retail space was so inviting and amazing. It's a deli, it's a bar, it's a meat market (but the good kind!) and a bottle shop all in one. Pierce Creek is an extension of a ranch near Lonedell, MO; the MOObile food truck (featuring smash burgers and tallow fries) is also theirs. The brick-and-mortar is in the former Kohn's Deli, and has a huge parking lot. It's an easy walk from the Creve Coeur AMC, should you want a bite and a pint before a show! We checked out the wall of spirits--all local, and most not found in grocery stores and large shops--then ordered food at the deli counter. We opted for the Local Cheese and Cured Meat Platter, and were pleasantly surprised when invited to pick any three Volpi meats and three cheeses from the case. The menu also includes their smash burgers and tallow fries, deli standards (including Kohn's Classic Reuben), and a range of substantial hot food--including pork tenderloin, whiskey-glazed salmon, hot vegetables, and more. They'll even grill a steak at "case price". We sat at the bar and ordered drinks from the seasonal cocktail menu, which features lots of local spirits and interesting flavors. Our food was soon ready, and that $15 charcuterie platter was more than worth it! It included generous portions of 3 meats and 3 cheeses, plus jam, olives, pickles, and "tallow-fried bagel chips". The chips were too greasy for me, but my partner enjoyed them. Everything was exceptional. I kept hearing about Pierce Creek and decided we needed to check it out! My husband and I were in the mood for a casual dinner on a Saturday night and ended up here. It's a store/butcher shop/carry out/eat in/bar! I think I covered everything. The menu is on the wall and food orders are placed at a counter. The gal who took our order was very friendly and answered the questions we had about the menu. We placed our order and then went and chose a table. The bar is over where the seating is and my husband went and got a beer. There were two older gentlemen playing music and singing. One of them came over and talked to us while they were on a break. It would have been fine, but we had our food and it was hot and we didn't want to chat and have our food cool off! Apparently they will be there every Saturday. We didn't enjoy their music so we'll be back on another night in the future. When we ordered our food, we were given a number to put on our table and someone would deliver our food when it was ready. Two people were running food - often together - to bring out all the food at once for a table. They literally walked around and didn't appear to be looking at the numbers on the table. They tried to drop off food at the wrong table numerous times. It's not a big place and there weren't that many tables taken. A number of people seemed to have ordered chili (including me) and every single one of us had to ask for a spoon. I asked for some butter for my cornbread and they were confused by that. I can't be the only one that likes a little butter with cornbread! They said they would go check into it. I didn't get butter and they never came back. But the food was good! We live just around the corner and wanted to try this place out. It is relatively new and took over an old deli. They have a little meat/deli market that you could pick up a wide variety of treats as well as serve food from their kitchen. When we were there it was not too busy, they had local musicians there to play some music for everyone while they ate. You order at the counter and then they bring the food out to you. I got the beef birria sandwich and my wife got the Steak hoagie. We got the large tallow fries to share (definitely enough fries for a table of people!) All the food was delicious, you could tell it was fresh. I was jealous of her hoagie, it was so incredible soft! We got a couple of desserts to take home from the counter before we left. I already had a burger from this place's food truck once before, at a free outdoor music festival on the riverfront, so I knew how good it was. It might be the best thing I ever had from a food truck, for what it's worth. It might even be the best burger I ever had. I figured a burger made in the back of a weird hybrid grocery store couldn't be any worse than a burger made on a roach coach. It might even be safer to eat. I saw on the app that this place carries a ginormous pork tenderloin sandwich. Part of me wanted to try it out, if only for the value proposition it presented, but also because I love pork, despite the best efforts of the Honorable Minister. But I never reviewed the food truck, and I want to be able to compare this place to other burgers I might try one of these days. Also, this is St. Louis, not Iowa. This is more of a grocery store, at least in terms of its setup, and they only serve food during lunch hours. Will they sell you groceries during the evening? I wasn't there to buy groceries anyway, and it's not clear to me that anyone ever has. Remember the bodega from the movie Half Baked? You walk through an automatic front door like you're walking into a Schnucks (God forbid). Near the front, there's a cashier who doubles as a Walmart-style greeter, but younger and less adept at security. You order your food at the deli counter. There's an electronic menu that's useless to anyone other than Navy fighter pilots, and there's a stack of paper menus with the exact same information. The clientele skews old to the point where I felt like I was on the set of the movie Cocoon, so I can't be the only one who had that problem. The guy working the counter said that his favorite thing was the Birria Sandwich (cultural appropriation much?), that he also likes the Pimento Burger and that the most popular thing was some Mushroom Burger. I figured I might just go with a regular double cheeseburger (they're double cheeseburgers by default, like at Five Guys), but I figured what the hell. I like a good pimento loaf. I also went with the small Tallow Fries and a Fountain Drink. There were no desserts or milkshakes, as far as I could tell. Huge missed opportunity. On my way to my seat, the cute young waitress girl almost knocked me over, despite my being roughly the same size as the Chief in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. I joked about it, and she seemed to find it amusing. It's possible that I could have talked her into leaving there with me. Alas. Fairly quickly, she brought my burger out, but without the fries. She said she wanted to bring it out while it was hot and fresh and that the fries would be another three minutes. Was she concerned that the Pimento cheese might congeal? Because that wouldn't have been an issue for me. I'm a true cheese eater, not some online poser. I didn't time the fries, but I was just about done with the burger when they came out. I eat my food as quickly as the unhoused, despite the fact that I don't really do anything, other than this marathon I'm training for. She brought me a huge serving of fries, as an apology, and maybe also, I'd like to think, out of a desire to be with me. I didn't need to eat that many fries, but of course I ate every single one of them. Tallow's not bad for you, is it? They give you less Pimento than I would have preferred, maybe because they don't want it to overshadow the meat (ayo!). I could hardly taste it, but the burger was overall still very good. I put the provided LTOP on it, but I opted out of the generous selection of condiments they had on offer. Sometimes it pays to be located in a grocery store. The fries were as good as I remember from the food truck, meaning excellent. You could really taste the extra three minutes they spent preparing them, though it's not clear what difference, if any, the tallow made. If I hadn't been told they were fried in beef tallow, would I have noticed? That's irrelevant, because obviously this place's thing is to serve food made with the highest quality ingredients, which I guess they sell (or would sell) in the grocery store. Everything tasted top notch and was expertly prepared. If you told me that Yo-Yo Ma played a song for the cow before they shot that bolt into its head, I might believe you. Certainly, I don't have a problem believing they use beef tallow. McDonald's used to use it, fer chrissakes. Hopefully, they only got rid of it because of the price. read more

This place drops the bar beneath the floor on drinks. $16 old fashioned and the glass isn't even half full. I've had old fashions all over Saint Louis and this is easily the cheapest pour I have seen at any restaurant. Ordered the charcuterie board and it looked like the staff ate 3/4 the board before it arrived. I will say it was good but not good enough to cover the teeny tiny portions. Don't get me started on the steaks, I come from small town McGregor, IA where meat markets are popular and reasonably priced. Steak here is obnoxiously over priced. 30-40% mark up form market, You could get a cheaper ribeye at Bristol's. But then they served the entrees and I have to be honest, they are fantastic. That's the only reason it's getting 3 stars. Best pork tenderloin I've had in Saint Louis. That is the only reason this place gets 3 stars. Located east on Olive in the old Kohn's place, this place has a little bit of everything. I was floored upon walking in, not only from the size but how it has everything you need! I was first drawn to the bakery on the left which featured bagels, cookies, brownies, cannolis, and other misc items. From there, I made my way to the market which had vegetables and frozen meats/produce. While making my way to the back, I noticed the middle shelves were lined with Tshirts and chips. The back is where the restaurant is and it features a plethora of sandwiches and fries to whet your appetite. It has ample seating, so space won't be an issue. I wish I had more time to have ordered something but I can't wait to come back and officially try it out! read more

Stopped in for lunch (first visit). The positives. The two sandwiches ordered - smash burger and tenderloin - were very good, as was the single order of fries. I also ordered 1 soft drink. The negatives. After following the sign to order at the deli counter I found two ladies talking to each other. I asked if this is where I was supposed to place my order. One pointed to the end of the counter. Not a solid example of customer service. The other woman went to that area, got behind a computer and took my order. When done, the screen asked for the amount I wanted to tip. Sorry, I'm old school. I tip based on service delivered. Nonetheless, I did select the max amount. I was then handed a small plastic glass and told to get my drink at the self service soft drink dispenser (like you find at gas stations) across the room. After I got the drink (no straws anywhere) I joined my wife at a table. She said it was the third table she tried because the first two were too wobbly. When I sat down I noticed the only condiment on the table was a bottle of hot sauce. I got up and took some mustard and ketchup from one of the unstable tables. After a while a gentleman came to our table and presented our food. He noted we did not have any silverware and brought us some. Those actions and my encounter with the two ladies was the full extent of our customer service. The bill for the two sandwiches, one small order of fries and small soft drink was $45 and some change. If the cost was half as much I would have rated this place 3 stars. P.S. - I did receive a kind response from one of the owners. I did neglect to state that when requested, she did provide a box for leftovers and refilled a drink. I will also repeat - the food was very good. My low rating was based on the fact the prices charged are comparable to sandwiches served at high end/full service restaurants (such as Annie Gunn's, Bristol's or Brio Italian). Major allergy alert! Cross contamination is a huge issue. We had a person with a peanut allergy and no one knew what ingredients were in a dish that was ordered. Was given the excuse that their vendors and computer program are not talking to be able to figure it out. Also was told by server she is gf and had been at the hospital for that the previous week... someone else had to tell us that his father had a nut allergy but neither one seemed overly concerned about the person in our party that was having a reaction. Bakery area had all cookies including peanut butter on 1 tray. When asked about what was in the "trash" cookies and what was in it neither person behind the counter had a clue what was in them and did not offer to find out. No one in our party of 4 will go back and highly suggest people with allergies to be extremely careful! Hope they can figure this out before someone gets really sick! read more

To the left is a deli while to the right is a dining area and bar. You need to go to the deli area. This is where you place your order then head over to the dining room. You will place your drink (alcoholic, soft drinks, or water) order when the bartender comes by your table. This also where you settle all cost of food and drinks after your meal. Now, for the food review. I ordered the pastrami. Because I had so high expectations I was a little let down. Not to say it wasn't good because it was; I simply had an unreasonably high hopes. Other folks had the burger and they enjoyed it. As for now, I will score it a solid three out of five. My first visit. This was an interesting place. A combination butcher counter/deli/restaurant/bar. They have a menu. But you can walk around looking into all the refrigerated cases to decide what you want to eat. Then order same at the counter. They will bring your food to where you are sitting. I ordered one of their New York strip steaks along with tallow cooked French fries and home made cucumber-mix salad. Ate it all. My companion ordered the salmon. Both were charcoal grilled and delicious. We sat at the bar. The owner came by to check on us. You don't often see real charcoal grilling at restaurants any more. They do here. Now I have to go back and try the meatloaf I saw in the counter. LOL read more
