I stumbled in to Pietro's thinking it was the extended sandwich shop from Roma Deli next door. Well, it is not but I am sure happy that I decided to stay. I'm a sucker for a good Italian meats sammie. I went for the simple Salami and Cheese and kept it dressed as is (mayo, vinaigrette, tomatoes, lettuce). The bread was wonderful. Fresh, soft and with the right amount of tooth when you bite down. The salami was sliced on the thicker side which to my surprise, i enjoyed. But most important this sammie was dressed to perfection with the right amount of fixins. Just the right amount of mayo to coat the bread so the meat and cheese stayed in place. Just the right amount of vinaigrette to flavor up the lettuce and tomato. All in all for $5.95 (small size) this was a truly spectacular simple Italian sammie. Next up was a Calzone filled with pepperoni. Can we say perfection? I'm thinking yes. The crust was divine! I would have ate it on it's own even if it wasn't stuffed with a delicious marinara sauce, ooey gooey cheese and mounds of pepperoni. A $7.95 pocket of heaven this calzone was. I wanted a little more love from the grouchy Italian grandpa that took my order but once I started to chow down I wasn't going to let that get in the way. My husband was persistently telling me that this was an expansion to Roma's. I wasn't sold but took his word for it. I knew he was wrong once I saw the sandwich wrapped in white paper. We ordered a large Pietro's Hoagie to share between the two of us since we like all that meat. It ran us about $9. I was bit surprised by how much bread came with it. There's a middle slice which I think is a bit unnecessary and throws the ratio of the sandwich out of balance. The sandwich was alright and not something I would write home about. It was lacking something perhaps some balsamic, peppers, pickles onions or some fancy garlic spread would really spruce it up. They do gots some fancy chips to pair with it though. Busy parking lot shared with a few other businesses. Overall, it's alright. I wouldn't mind going back to try something else but probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

The pizza that I picked up was VERY delicious. A SMALL is enough for 2 people actually. But I had ordered a PESTO pizza with ARTICHOKE as (extra) that was IT! For some reason when my gf brought me the pizza and opened I up the box, it had ALSO GREEN PEPPERS and ONIONS on it. My husband and I moved to Pasadena 11 years ago and never did find a pizza place that we were crazy about, until now. We stumbled upon Pietro's and ordered a medium Special Combo Pizza with extra meat and added garlic. Hands down best pizza in Pasadena and our official go to Pizza spot. I walked into Pietro's one day after visiting the deli next door and decided to give it a try; Pietro's always seems to have a few customers ordering out or eating in, and it was tempting since i hadn't eaten anything into the afternoon that day. I knew what I wanted as soon as I saw it on the hot sandwiches section of the menu: Pepperoni Calzone. I ordered one and about 15 minutes later, it was delivered to me at one of the eat-in tables. it was so hot; it seemed they'd made it to order, rather than popping a frozen one into the oven. The Calzone Crust: crisp on the outermost edges, and chewy when you get to the middle; I was impressed - the crust was a good pocket for all the items inside; it did not get soggy, did not spring a leak, and was good even when I had the other half of my calzone @ meal #2. Inside: at first stab (with a knife), the calzone just oozed out cheese and sauce and pepperoni goodness. Sauce: a meat sauce - likely the same they use for pasta; so good! so hearty, so delicious. Cheese: hot, melty, stringy mozzerella; retained meltiness all through my dining. It was ideal. Pepperoni: in abundance! lots and lots inside! Service: mostly good, but sometimes the guy behind the counter seems preoccupied chatting with friends; oh well; *walk away* End note: I can't say it's a cheap calzone at $7.50, but you get what you pay for :) read more

I've been coming here for as long as I've been alive. Lol well ok for as long as I could remember. And I must admit I'm that person that gets the same thing EVERY TIME I come. My family has menu items that they swear by also. I recommend the Pietro's Hoagie. I get mine with extra dressing because I like my sandwiches to be wet! That's my favorite. My family likes their antipasto and pizza. Be warned, this is not a fancy restaurant so don't expect the bells and whistles. They have a good staff, friendly and accommodating. BUT the parking here is hit or miss. It's a tiny strip mall with about 15 parking spaces. On average, there's about 2 free spots when I go. To sum it up: Get the hoagie & parking may be crowded. read more

I actually came here by mistake. I wanted to go to Roma's for a sandwich. When I pulled up to the parking lot, I saw the sign for Rom's and Pietro's was just right next door. I didnt' realize that the deli for Roma's was actually inside the store that's behind the cashier in the far right corner. There are no signs to let newbies know where to go for sandwiches. Anyways, I ordered a Pietro's hoagie next door and didn't have to wait too long. I think it came out to about $8.50 for a large. FYI: They also have lunch combos for about $10 that comes with chips and a soda. Didn't realize how huge the sandwich was until I got home. It puts the foot long sub at Subway to shame. Unwrapped the sandwich and was disappointed with the amount of meat on this thing. There was 3 different types of meat with only 1 layer of each. So it looks like they cut the sesame bread into 3 layers with lettuce, mayo, tomatoes & vinegar. I have to say that the bread was very fresh and it taste very good. The vinegar wasn't too much to the point where it made the bread soggy. I think the whole sandwich was not overpowered by anything specific. I would recommend this place if you want a good Italian sandwich. They also have pastas & pizzas. Maybe I will give that a try next time. The first time I heard the word Hoagie outside of Philly was at Pietro's. And thank god, because I was really getting tired of looking for a good Italian sub shop near my work. Its lunch time... So I usually call head and go pick it up. In the time it takes me to leave the office and get over there (under 10 min) its done and waiting for me. The lunch special these guys run is pretty good, so I usually stick with it. I got myself a 12" Hoagie this time around. Next time its a toss up between the Beef Dip, or the Chicken Parm. You can see in my picture that the bread:meat ratio isnt too favorable, but all in all i gotta say its a pretty fantastic tasting Hoagie and the bread is pretty delicious with all the Italian dressing sprinkled on it. My first Pietro's experience: I ordered on-line, a linguine dish and the "Gisella Special Turkey Sub. Served with roasted red peppers". Every dish was wrong. I phoned the store and, it turns out, the on-line menu is all wrong. They never have linguine. They don't know anything about roasted red peppers. No apology. They also didn't read the "notes" for special request ... like no mayonnaise. The food that did come home with me wasn't tasty enough to give them a second try. read more

This place just lost our business! Three times over the course of 5 months I've received a pizza from here with very inconsistent cheese and pepperoni distribution. I'm referring to up to 5 slices of a large pizza that looked like they forgot to put cheese and pepperoni on them. This is a Cardinal sin of pizza production. Just downright SLOPPY pizza construction and quality control! Customer service is very important to me. If I'm going to respectfully and politely inform a restaurant about an issue I have with their food I expect to be heard and believed! This is not a time to debate with me or act like I'm making things up. I also expect the employee, manager or owner to extend some type of apology and to assure me that it won't happen again. Not the case at Pietro's. We decided to give them another try. I instructed my wife to tell them of our previous experiences before placing our phone order. My wife said the lady on the phone was rude and angry and basically told my wife she was lying. I picked up the pizza and I received the same arrogant attitude from the same woman to which my wife spoke to over the phone. Again 2 slices of pizza only had cheese covering half of the slice. I don't get it. What's so hard about making sure a pizza is covered with cheese everywhere there is supposed to be cheese! Had my wife not called I'm sure there would have been more cheese missing! This place has always been tight with condiments, but now cheese?! And get this. We bought a large pizza so I asked loudly for 7 or 8 packs of parmigiana cheese. I was given only 3 packages! They will GOUGE you for ranch dressing as well when every other place only charges if you ask for more than one side. The attitude I experienced was the last straw and enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth forever! Pietro's is obviously not in it to win it! They must also be oblivious to the very large number of 4 star and 4.5 star pizza places within a one mile radius of there 3.5 star establishment. I do know that the original owner is no longer. "Skimping on the bread and using cheaper meats are 2 of the Mortal Sandwich Sins" Respectfully, other reviewers seem to love Pietro's, but I suppose that if you've never been to the "old" Pietro's, then you wouldn't know how much better they used to be. Frankly, Pietro's was amazing back in the day before it was sold to the new owner. Why? Because the bread was fresh baked and sourced through the infamous Roma's Italian Deli next door. What's the connection? Pietro's used to be owned and run by the nephew of this Italian Deli owner. Back then, Pietro's had the heart of a good Italian; someone who knows that it's a cardinal sin to scrimp on ingredients. But that's the irony of the current Pietro's. They're next door to the best deli in Pasadena, yet they don't use them. Admittedly, I'm a sucker for struggling hole in the wall places. I'm far from perfect, and I recognize the difficulty in running a small eaterie with picky people like me as customers. After all, their pizza isn't bad, their hot sandwiches are good, and the owner is probably a nice guy... All I'm saying is that things could be even better if the bread and meats were sourced from next door. I suppose that I keep returning in hope that the ghosts of Pietro's heart will come back in the form of a foot long hoagie. OMG! This place is so good. We ordered the Pietro's hoagie and gobbled it down in probably less than 5 minutes! It was so perfectly yummy! I have to have a parent teacher conference with my daughter's teacher nearby later today which makes me excited because I could come in and get a hot salami sandwich then! Service was perfect! I ordered a sandwich from someone who graciously took my order! Perhaps the reviewers who think there's bad service have some insane idea and expectation of how they "deserve" to be served. My two cents on the issue is that I am happy that there is a place that I can get an authentic Italian sub or pizza in Altadena. Pietro's is very similar to the character Fredo from the movie - The Godfather. As Michael Corleone reasonably expected integrity from his dumb but sweet older brother, I expected integrity from my neighborhood hole-in-the-wall Italian pizza/sub shop. For a while - my gastronomical Pie-San came through.... until tonight when something went terribly wrong. After ordering a large sausage pizza from the Altadena locale favorite - I picked up a pie that was literally missing 40% of the cheese on the pizza. Calling Pietro's - the cook stated he wanted to "fix the pie." Since, a pizza is cooked all at once - "fixing" a pie by adding on more cheese - then putting it back into the pizza oven is just plain folly. Crisped dough dries out and becomes burnt. Tomato sauce burns off. Sausage gets buried. Hanging up - I called Pietro's Burbank location - where the manager asked, "why are you calling me?" I explained that their wasn't a manager at Pietro's in Altadena. Pietro's Burbank Manager stated that he didn't see how there was a problem as Pietro's was "highly rated on Yelp." I had to laugh. If earning a consistent 3 Stars for 18 Reviews is considered a high Yelp rating - then Robert Rizzo wasn't stealing money when he earned 1.5 Million dollars as corrupt City Manager for Bell, California. At this point Pietro's Burbank manager relented stating he would call Altadena and approve a brand new replacement pizza. Bringing back the poorly made pie to Pietro's Altadena - the cook actually looked me straight in the eyes and stated unflinchingly, "the bare spots on a pizza are caused by bubbles popping. That's how pizza's cook." In speaking to Pietro's Altadena cook - I realized that like Michael Corleone, I was quickly reaching the point where I was no longer willing to put with Pietro's/Fredo's screw-ups and lies. Before pulling the trigger however, and never going back to Pietro's - I only hope the current owners actually start reading these Yelp Ratings. Cause Pietro's quality is slipping quickly. ---- One last bad Godfather analogy ---- "I know it was you Fredo, I know it was you, and it breaks my heart," intoned Michael Corleone in his last encounter with his disloyal brother before he orders him killed. I admit that I've only had one thing from Pietro's, but it's my sole reason for going back. Yeah, sure, I can try something else--there are other vegetarian things here, like pizza--but why? Pietro's hot eggplant parmesan sandwich is all I need. Order it with extra cheese and extra sauce (which have an additional charge, like $ .50 each), and it's ready in 10 minutes. On a bad day, they'll forget (or skimp on) the extra sauce and cheese, but I think my success rate has been pretty good. For the meat-eaters, the linguini in (white) clam sauce is a big hit with my pescatarian friend, and it comes with a little salad. I've also gotten the Caesar salad on occasion, which does not have anchovies and is therefore LOV-friendly, but it's pretty blah, and my friend says the dressing smells "goat-y." Of course, once she said that, I couldn't eat it anymore. But back to my LOVely eggplant parm: It's the perfect dinner to pick up on my way home. If I were writing this last Friday, I would say nothing other than GET the pesto pizza! It's sooooo good!! It's vegetarian, I think, with tomatoes, green peppers and ricotta cheese; I get mine without the tomatoes (I HAVE no prostate, so I'm not going to worry about a lack of lycopene!) and with meatballs. Yum! And it's also good for you!! I went again on Friday with a friend from out of town, and we ordered about half the menu (two boys over 6'3" and little ol' me). Hawaian pizza = awesomeness.
