We visited the pike place and didn't do any research on what to eat. Overheard other visitors and decided to stop by and try. It's in the pike alley and the line was long, but move quickly. They have several workers helped directing the line. The clam chowder was delicious, full of flavor, very fresh. It's not thick in texture, but very creamy. Surprisingly, it was a huge hit for my kids who don't usually eat seafood. We also tried the lobster roll, which is a cold sandiwsh (for some reason I thought it would be warm). The lobster roll was expensive, and nothing really stick out except being fresh. If you stay in line, then you can eat at their table. No saving table before you get your food. On our recent trip to Seattle, it was a must to stop here for a taste of their New England Clam Chowder. I have heard rave reviews avout this place while others say it is overhyped. Well, we did what most tourists do when they visit Pike Place Market. We tried food from most of the popular spots. We arrived on a weekday, and the line wasn't too bad. Our group was able to order at the counter after a 15-minute wait. The line actually moves fast because they are very efficient in pushing out the orders. The interior is quite small, with a limited number of tables and bar seating. We were able to find a table outside to enjoy the chowder. After the first scoop of the chowder, I can say that it did live up to the hype. The chowder was flavorful and creamy with generous amounts of clams. It was tastier with a dash of Tabasco sauce. It was so delicious we came back the next day for round 2 before heading to lunch. There are many other menu items - lobster rolls, seafood bisque, and various chowders - crab and oyster, Manhattan, "Market", seared scallop, smoked salmon, lime and coconut. For a first-timer, I would recommend their "award winning chowder" - New England style!! If you can't decide, order the sampler, which comes with 3 selections. Rather than suffer the long line in their location in the alley near Pikes Market, I like their shop in Pacific Place Center in downtown Seattle. The restaurant is on the top floor of Pacific Place Shopping Center, at the top of the escalators. You order inside and then there are tables outside that are reserved for restaurant patrons, My go to order is just a large bowl of clam chowder. I Am What I Clam Pike Place Chowder is one of the most iconic eateries in the PNW--and quite possibly the US--with their award-winning chowder being named "the most popular dish in America" by Yelp in 2018. This is but one of many accolades, awards, and proclamations stating their chowder is the king of kings. We had wanted to go to the original location at Pike Place, but the parking situation was a nightmare at the time we went, and we opted for plan "B," which was this second location here at Pacific Place Mall. The Good: *Easy parking *100% sustainable seafood *Ordered the chowder sampler, and the Seafood Bisque was the clear winner. *The Crab Roll and Lobster Roll were decent enough but not when factoring in the price tag. The Meh: *Other than the seafood bisque, none of the other chowders stood out--including their New England. I found it mediocre and run-of-the-mill flavor. Now, this could be a case of high expectations, but I kind of doubt it. *Sourdough bread that came with the chowders was clearly old and stale. *Fries too were cold and had been sitting around. *Staff barely said two words to us and just mumbled their way through the ordering and pickup process. *You'll have to pay to park at the mall. Not their fault, but it needs to be said. The Ugly: *As stated above, the pricing here is quite absurd. +$40 for maybe 4oz of lobster and crab is ridiculous. At least make sure the fries are fried up to order and not premade. TLDR: Overhyped expectations usually lead to disappointment, and Pike Place Chowder fell right into that trap. So I finally tried it. The chowda was good, but was it worth the wait and the price? Definitely NO. Honestly, the chowder from soup plantation (before they shut down :-( ) was just as good, and it was unlimited refills for a very affordable price without long lines! Oh so sad. Anyway, if you are so curious like I was, try it, but consider yourself warned. I was warned by a relative who used to live near Pike Place but I had to try it to settle my curiosity. Caveat: this location is in the mall at Pacific Place Shopping Center on the uppermost floor so vibes are very different.
