Outstanding food and service. We picked this place from a web search and it had pictures of perfectly plated food. The food was American with other super interesting flavors and textures. Please, steer clear of this place. I stopped by for happy hour with a few friends, and we had high hopes. We were seated immediately and greeted by a kind, attentive server who took our order of happy hour drinks and food. This is where the positive experience ended. A few minutes after getting our drinks, the server returned, apologetic, and said the manager denied our order because "happy hour is only for those seated at the bar and bar lounge"--totally cool if this was an oversight on our part, but this detail wasn't mentioned anywhere in the restaurant or online. We asked if we could be re-seated in the "bar lounge," and our server had to pass this through the manager before she could say yes. We picked up our drinks and were re-seated at a table in the front of the room, past what appeared to be the manager, who just looked at us. As it turned out, there was no separate "lounge" space--literally just the front of the same room we were in, at an identical table. Our food arrived, and it was pretty tasty. It didn't come out exactly how we'd ordered it, but griping about a sauce that didn't come on the side is splitting hairs, so really no complaints there. When it was time for the bill, we were asked to walk over to the server station with our cards because they couldn't print the check. When I looked at my bill, our $6 HH drinks were listed at $17. We were told, "Oh, those weren't happy hour drinks," despite ordering the drinks verbatim off of the HH menu (...and being relocated across the restaurant specifically to sit at a happy hour-qualifying table). We pointed this out and the manager offered to "look into it", so we walked back to our table with our cards and watching him struggle for about 10 more minutes to correct our bill on the screen, as if this issue hadn't ever happened before. He then came to our table, seeming a bit disgruntled, and asked for our credit cards. No "I'm sorry" or "thank you for your patience"...just took our cards and came back with printed receipts this time. The HH prices were finally correct on our bills, but for whatever reason, mine was the only bill in the group with an added "credit service charge" of $3.48 (we all used credit cards and had similarly priced bills). At this point, we decided to just cut our losses, pay, and leave. Our server was gone, and the manager (again) just stood there silently as we walked out. In summary-- We were made to feel like a nuisance for seeking clarity on the happy hour pricing and hidden restrictions. Management was clearly breathing down our server's neck, and the place seems geared toward guests who can afford not to question overcharges. For food, we got the tuna tartare 5/5 : their best dish Beef tartare 4.5/5 : really good Angnolotti : 4/5 good, but serving size is more for a toddler Fried chicken: 3/5 - fried chicken sitting in a soup of collard greens and fish sauce wasn't very appealing to me. It got soggy, and didn't really go well together. I think the fried chicken would've been better not taking a bath in the sauce to keep it crispy. It was very moist and tender though. Bread was good. Pillar was a fantastic dining experience! As a lover of their other restaurant, Mot Hai Ba, I had high expectations, and they did not disappoint! Every dish packed a ton of flavor. We were so excited to try out this new spot, we love Mot Hai Ba, so we knew Peja would not disappoint with this new place. The service was wonderful, great recommendations were made. First time there - my wife and I were impressed. They brought us a courtesy amuse-bouche and then followed it up with their house cocktail martinis, which came full to the brim and went down easy. Our waiter, a gentleman of epic sorts whose name was Peter, was both a delight and informative when it came to the foods ingredients and origins. The fried chicken was tender and unexpected in terms of flavors, a nice change from classic fried chicken. Sigh. Yet another fawned over Dallas restaurant that fails to live up to the hype and just demonstrates that the food scene here is, to use a Gen Z expression, "mid". My party ordered generously, and every single thing that we ordered - appetizers, salad/veggies, entrees, desserts - sounded better than it tasted. I think we just kept ordering more food because 1) we hoped things would get better and we'd be wowed, and 2) because the appetizers and salad/veggies were all miniscule portions. Everything was a mish mash, and in some case just plain wrong (Who thought to slather the slices of Hamachi in that dip like sauce? Or that dry Toffee cake with slices of dry Persimmon? Or drown the grilled leeks and poached crab in sharp vinaigrette?). Most dishes were over-sauced to hell. The first loaf of the brioche was delicious and had a soft crust. The next two loaves were clearly overbaked and were tough on the outside. The fried chicken was the largest portion of food, soft inside, crisp outside - but pretty one note. It didn't taste of much except the gravy on top, and the soupy thing at the bottom. The chocolate beet cake was ordinary, and I'm still wondering why all the hazelnuts on top were soggy-chewy instead of being crunchy? Everything was overpriced because the general thinking at Pillar (and broadly the new wave of similar restaurants) is form over function, style over substance. Let's serve tiny portions (order the fried oysters and see for yourself how ridiculous they are for $5 each), of overly complicated dishes that we have neither the vision nor skill to execute, and then charge $100+/diner for it. The service was also pretty meh, with wait times being long, water remaining unfilled, dishes being pulled from the table mid-bite, The ambience was fine, but the booths and layout were uncomfortable. Overall, Pillar was a misadventure. We enjoyed our meal at Mot Hai Ba but never felt the inclination to return (what is it about Dallas restaurants that fails to lure you back in with deliciousness, warmth, consistency, and value?). Went to Pillar with my husband for my 30th bday dinner. Super cute restaurant in the Bishop Arts and sister restaurants with Mot Hai Ba (which we still haven't tried). The food and drinks were flavorful and unique with a southern flair but hints of Asian influence. We went to the restaurant on weekday and it was pretty much empty. We had a 6:45 pm reservation. We ordered the grilled leeks, fried chicken sandwich and agnolotti. The leek dish was super interesting and a very cool flavor profile - a little hard to cut through though even with a steak knife. The fried chicken sandwich was the star of the show - super crunchy and the hot honey really topped it off. The Agnolotti was delicious and different. Short rib was very tender and a great addition to the plate. For my bday dessert, we ordered an off menu special - apple pecan tart topped with a vanilla custard. Very very delicious!! A little upset that they charged us for the dessert on my birthday. Most Dallas restaurants comp a birthday dessert so was pretty surprised they didn't. It was a cool and different culinary experience but a little up in the air if I'd return or not. I would recommend trying though. Our server, Henry, was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. We dined at Pillar last evening for our first time. Our waitress was a trainee- she was being closely shadowed by the manager. Both checked on us often. We ordered 2 apps an entree and one side for dinner. The apps were a "tuna tower" of raw ahi tuna and a serving of mussels in a wine butter sauce. The tuna was good but not very plentiful....the mussels were outstanding- meaty with excellent flavor. The wine butter sauce was delicious. Two good size pieces of toasted french baguette were provided to soak up that deliciousness. The entree was charred Texas Redfish. It was grilled to perfection and served with its skin on over a fennel and leek salad. It was also quite delicious. The side was a most interesting combination of skillet sautéed pecans, pumpkin seeds, chopped dates and sunflower seeds in a light butter sauce. The combination of flavors was wonderful. Overall our meal was delicious and enjoyable. The decor has changed slightly from preceder Boulevardier. We would recommend Pillar and will be back. read more

Dishes full of flavor, instead of plates full of huge quantities of food hidden under too much sauce and salt. Tonight my 5 friends and I had a table in the back of the restaurant right near the kitchen. At first it was a pleasant experience - some awkwardness with wait staff (could easily be perceived as standoffish?) but it was quickly smoothed over by someone who seemed to be floor manager and was warm, gracious and accommodating. The food was delicious - memorable and unique fried chicken and cornbread brioche and agnolotti. But we had an experience at the end of dinner that was pretty upsetting on several fronts and soured our perspective on this place. As we were paying our bill I heard rageful yelling from the kitchen. It was hard to ignore because the kitchen is so close to the back tables and brightly lit, and other tables were looking over and wondering what was going on. I stood up and peaked in and saw the head chef Peja Krstic running around the corner to reach his line cook (who had apparently dropped an arincini) and yell right in his face. [*side note - a quick Google search of this man will reveal several accounts of abuse and harassment and racism*] He violently grabbed the cook's arm and pulled him towards him to yell more directly into his ear. At this point I stepped inside and told him everyone could hear and see him and he should lay off because it was "pretty f@$king awkward." He didn't look me in the eye (he was seeing red) and dismissed me with a "whatever." Shortly afterwards the young floor manager came over to apologize. The disconcerting (and slightly condescending) thing about her speech was that she didn't just say sorry that you saw that, it shouldn't have happened - she immediately tried to minimize his toxicity and compare his behavior to a "father saying he's disappointed in you," and that this whole place is his baby and it's just "part of the culture" and he's just really passionate about what he makes. This apologist attitude towards an arrogant, angry, and ego-driven white man in a position of power that he wields over his employees with violence is hugely concerning, and indicative of a larger problem within this industry (and so many others) of the normalization of toxic masculinity and abuse. This head chef couldn't even calm down enough to come over to us and apologize, his 25-year-old female employee had to run over to make excuses on his behalf - probably out of fear for her own position within this workplace. Men like this are a scourge on society. Their self-importance and false authority as a brilliant auteur and irreplaceable commander-in-chief perpetuates horrifically damaging systems of patriarchy and white supremacy and leaves the collaborators in this specific environment (other cooks and staff) mistreated and erased. Final words - the food is good at first but the vaguely unnerving atmosphere that thinly veils the toxic environment of an angry, egomaniacal white man peddling defensive narratives of "passion" and "tortured genius" is disturbing enough to make it all taste horrible. read more

I really never write reviews but feel compelled. The chef at this restaurant is visibly and audibly abusive toward his staff. I get that's a widespread problem in the restaurant industry, but it doesn't make it acceptable, and it also doesn't make for a nice experience for literally anyone involved. The food is pretty good, but certainly not special enough for some man to think he can act like whatever he's doing is more important than basic human decency. It's both skeevy and embarrassing. Celebrated our 39th anniversary last night at Pillar, and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. The hosts were very welcoming and seated us promptly even though we were a little early. Our server, Andrew, was kind, efficient, and very gracious. We ordered the tuna carpaccio, roasted leeks, rosemary fries, fried chicken, branzino, and lemon tart. Each dish had great presentation--simple and elegant. The tuna was super fresh and had amazing umami. The roasted leeks were tender, sweet, and flavorful. Fries were quite yummy, just enough rosemary. The chicken paired very nicely on a bed of collard greens, which were cooked perfectly with a touch of acidity and not too salty. Loved that I didn't need to fight the bones on the chicken. Great crunch and a savory sauce on the chicken, which was very juicy. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the branzino, which he had never had. The skin had a nice char, and the filet had soooo much flavor. I wanted to steal the delicious panzanella salad served with the fish, but he gobbled it up. We saved enough room in our tummies for the lemon tarte. It was beautiful, a bit tart and not too sweet. Enjoyed it with a cuppa Americano that was brewed to perfection. Several different people brought out our food, and each person was delightful, proud of what they served, and was so happy to be there. It was refreshing to have such great service from beginning to end. Can't wait to return--maybe to try brunch, which they just started. I highly recommend Pillar! read more

The restaurant is really nice, great location but this isn't worth it, disappointing. Service was mediocre, drinks took 20mins, food took 45 mins. They say it's family style but the portions are so meager it's laughable. Our waiter never checked on us, the only competent person working there was the lovely busgirl that always made sure our water glass was as full. Almost $200 later, we left hungry and ended eating leftover pizza and ice cream at home. Save your money, go elsewhere. read more

The food was tasty however a little bummed and underwhelmed. Would not go out of the way but would try again if I was in the area. White wine was not cold, asked for descriptions of the wines by the glass and had multiple different FOH say they weren't familiar with "that one" and there was only a few. Let me begin by saying my experience began from the time I as seated. The service was great and my server, Jose was gracious and knowledgeable about the drinks and food. The food was absolutely delicious from the appetizers to dessert. We started the meal with the Beef Tartare (I could eat this all day), Hamachi And Apple (light plate cleanser), Grilled Leeks (OMG delicious), and Duck, Leek, And Bacon Pie (upscale pot pie, best I have ever had). FANTASTIC meal and service, from start to finish. The aesthetic of the restaurant is beautiful, polished. They were so accommodating to our party; we had two people join us late and unexpectedly. Our first visit to Pillar but definitely not the last. Located in the old Boulevardier space in Bishop Arts this is an incredible addition to the Dallas restaurant scene. All aspects were top notch. Our server (Peter) was more a guide giving us insightful suggestions as to his favorites on the menu. Innovative craft cocktails (I opted for the Irish Whiskey, spiced brandy and fig (Lofty Idea). We shared the onion rings battered with curry vanilla batter and perfectly fried. Next was Nashville corn meal hot fried oysters. Served with a hot honey. Just one each but perfect and left me wanting more. Moved on the an order of agnolotti. Perfect little pasta pillows filled with house made ricotta and caramelized onions with a thickened broth of browned butter and tender braised short rib meat. (It was sooo good!) Finally the pork rib cassoulet. Full of melt in your mouth delicious pork short ribs served over leaks, beans with a a grilled apple chutney that was the perfect addition to this dish.... I hesitated to write this review as this won't stay a secret for very long. The restaurant and the amazing food alone would have been enough to rave about this quaint place, in an amazing neighborhood, with an amazing focus on detail... however, none of those things were our favorite part of our first visit to Pillar. Jose Luis, our server, was amazing. The way he made us feel like family was incredible. How do you sit in a trendy, busy restaurant and feel like the only table there...? I don't know... but we did. We were very excited to try Mot Hai Ba's sister restaurant. Everything was great at first, but the plates were progressively coming out late. Last plates came out 45 min after the previous. Owner or manager (unsure who he was) apologized and said he would come back to make sure everything was good, but kept on looking at us and never came back. My dirty martini tasted like it had pickle juice in it, not olive juice. Overall the food was great (although too salty) but the service was just not there. Maybe because we were a table of 2, but everyone deserves the same experience. Will probably not come back here, but will definitely be going back to Mot Hai Ba. read more
