We found pine state at about noon on a Saturday and the line wrapped around the corner and halfway down the street. Part of me didn't want to deal with the with wait- but on the other hand if everyone is willing to stand in line it must be worth it. We made it in to the counter (you won't have a server, instead you order at the counter and food is brought out to you) in 20/30 min. I usually eat on the obnoxious side of healthy, but when on vacation... you can't ignore a bomb biscuit place, and Pine State did not disappoint. The food was so insane I barely had time to stress about the calorie count. I had the Isley and my hubs had the reggie. I'd recommend both in a heartbeat. The biscuits were very hearty and the fried chicken was a very healthy portion. This place is too good to be true! While visiting Portland, my friend realized that I was here via social media and he recommended Pine State Biscuits. I'm so glad he did because it was my favorite brunch spot I ate at while I was in town. We started off with a Latte and a Bloody Mary, which were both equally delicious in their own way. I'm still on a Bloody Mary kick and this one knocked it out of the ballpark in my opinion. After that we shared a few item including The Reggie Deluxe, Shrimp-N-Grits, Hash Ups amd a slice of Pecan Pie! First off, The Reggie Deluxe. I feel like this is what they're known for and the deluxe version is adding an egg. Super tasty, biscuit was buttery, flaky and the fried chicken was cooked perfectly to a golden brown color. It's a must if you come here. Next up is the Shrimp-N-Grits. Another southern classic that they killed. Sautéed mushrooms, bacon, green onions and a killer sauce over the grits and a generous amount of shrimp. I was literally overwhelmed by every bite because I knew that I couldn't finish it all, but I didn't know what to keep eating before I got full. Onto the Hash Ups. These are your classic hash browns fried to golden perfection (possibly some of the best hash browns I've even enjoyed in my life tbh), topped with all of my favorite things- grilled onions and mushrooms, and cheese! SO GOOD! Everyone in my travel group couldn't get over their meals here. Several of my friends recommended this place when they heard I was going to Portland. We showed up around 11am on a Friday. It wasn't even the weekend and there was a line out the door. You have to wait in that line, place and pay for your order, find a table and then they bring your food to you. There is a nice covered patio with a lot of communal picnic benches. You bus your own tables unless you're inconsiderate, in which case you suck. We tried the reggie (biscuit sandwich with fried chicken, bacon, cheese and gravy) and the bbq biscuit (biscuit sandwich with pulled pork and slaw). Both were out of this world! I'm mad at myself for not taking a pic of the Reggie. I must've been too excited to eat it. For sides, we went with grits and cajun fries. I had read that this place had one of the best brunches in town, so we decided to come here on our last day in Portland. There were 3 locations listed on Yelp, so we chose the one that had the most reviews, which happened to be located in the Alberta district. When you walk in, you order at the front cash register and then find yourself a seat. They call your name when the food is ready to be picked up at the front. They have both indoor seating and a covered outdoor seating with heated lamps, although it still seemed too cold to be sitting outside, so we grabbed one of the few tables inside. They also have a bar table area that looks into the kitchen, in case you come by yourself or can't find a table. Now on to the food! I got the "Reggie Deluxe", which is fried chicken, bacon, cheese, sausage gravy, biscuit and egg on top. It was decadent and delicious. The gravy had a little kick to it. My husband got the same thing, but with shiitake mushroom gravy instead, and he liked it a lot. All of the flavors came together well. It's quite a big dish, so be sure to come hungry! My husband got the orange juice and mentioned that it was excellent, too. When you're finished, you bus your own table. One other side note to mention is that street parking can be difficult to find since it's in a popular district with other restaurants nearby. Visited this morning. I waited in line for about 30-40 minutes because I was able to order. They were busy so no big deal. I ordered inside (Reggie, hashbrowns, cocktail). I received my cocktail promptly and asked for my food to go since it was very crowded and I was alone. I waited 45 minutes to an hour for my food. The guy I placed my order with saw me standing at pickup window and shockingly asked if there was an issue with my order and I told him that I hadn't received it yet. Je proceeded to try to find my order while manning his station. 10-15 minutes later, I receive my food that had obviously been sitting somewhere inside for nearly an hour. Next favorite was the McIsley biscuit sandwich. If you love pickles, mustard, and vinegary flavors in general, this is the sandwich for you! The mustard was so fresh! The gravy was good, I got both the meat and mushroom gravy (mushroom was slightly better). I was much more blown away by the McIsley. Let's just start off by saying... by the end of my meal, i basically licked the plate clean. First, we got the Moneyball with Mixed Gravy (half sasuage gravy, half mushroom gravy) and let me tell you about those biscuits!!!! They're fresh and hot, incredibly flaky and buttery with a rich and creamy gravy. Forget ketchup, forget the hot sauce, that gravy can turn anything into gold. My boyfriend and I both prefer the mushroom gravy, though both are sooo delicious. We also got a small side of Hashbrown which is a good sharing size for 2! It's crispy golden brown and just the perfect side for a meal. The Andouille Corn Dog is perfectly crispy on the outside as well. Since I love cornbread, i would've preferred a thicker batter on the corn dog. It comes with stone ground mustard and honey which i'm personally not a fan of but my boyfriend loves it! Although we had to wait for quite some time before we got our food, the wait is completely worth it. We ordered their Reggie deluxe with both types of gravy (sausage and shiitake) and a side hash browns. Next time, we'd get their normal Reggie biscuit since the extra egg isn't necessary for us. Their biscuit and gravy is amazing. Just slice that thing into small pieces, slather the gravy all over it, and *chef's kiss*. I have heard SO much about this place from friends and fellow Yelpers that I pretty much decided to go to Portland to try it out. My overall impression is that it was good, but maybe because my expectations were so high, it wasn't quite as good as I thought it would be. I actually liked another breakfast biscuit spot I went to in Salt Lake City called Sweet Biscuits and Limeade more. My friend and I got in line around 11:10 on a Saturday morning. The line was dauntingly long and we debated whether to try coming back earlier the next day, but we decided to stick it out. I'm glad we did, since the line moves fairly quickly. We were already at the door to the restaurant within 30 minutes and placed our order at the counter after 40 minutes. The way it works here is you order first and then find your own spot. I was super paranoid they would run out of seating, but I noticed people were eating quickly and also leaving quickly, so the seats turn over at a fairly fast rate. There's some seating inside, but they also have a nice covered patio outside with heat lamps with plenty of benches. I love that you can either pick one of their specialty biscuit sandwiches or build your own. In addition to biscuit sandwiches, they also offer other random items such as shrimp and grits, chicken pot pie, and corndogs, if not everyone is your group is feeling the biscuit sandwiches. I went with the Reggie Deluxe ($10.50), which is a biscuit sandwich with fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and an egg topped with your choice of either sausage or shiitake mushroom gravy. I ordered an extra side of mushroom gravy since I read on Yelp that they don't give you enough gravy. We also shared hash ups ($7), i.e. hash browns topped with grilled onions and mushrooms (I asked for no cheese). The food comes out extremely quickly after you order. We didn't even have to wait 10 minutes. I loved my Reggie Deluxe and thought all the flavors went well together except for the fact that 1) I did indeed run out of sausage gravy about 2/3 of the way through, and 2) the fried chicken was indistinguishable in every bite. It was a little bland and the breading wasn't crispy at all, so overall I had a hard time tasting it in my biscuit sandwich. When I ran out of sausage gravy, I switched over to my side of shiitake mushroom gravy, but didn't like it that much as it was way too buttery for my tastes. The sausage gravy is definitely the way to go. The hash ups were nice and crispy, but I was so full from my Reggie Deluxe that I couldn't eat more than a couple bites of it. I can definitely understand the hype around this place, but for me Sweet Biscuits in SLC will always have a special place in my heart for having the best fried chicken + bacon + fried egg + gravy biscuit sandwich. They also serve beer and cocktails if you're looking to get your drink on! Parking in the area was pretty easy. My friend was able to find a spot right across the street, and we passed by plenty of empty spots within 2-3 blocks away. read more
