Visiting from Alaska, this was the first spot we hit from the airport. I got the chicken Katsu plate while my girlfriend got the Mahi mahi. Both were absolutely delicious, the mahi mahi was cooked perfectly, and the Katsu had a nice, crispy breading. 10/10 would eat again. read more

The ladies at Alamo suggested stopping here before heading north our final destination. We had the Mahi Mahi fish plate and the Korean Fried Chicken. It wasn't mind blowing food but it was a solid first stop on the island. The fish was good (read: not dry) and I like the lemon tartar that it came with. Heard great reviews but let down. Chicken Katsu not Panko breaded, but more of a chicken fried steak breading. Served w cocktail sauce instead of a tonkatsu. Noticed the fries sitting under the heat lamp after I had ordered them, needless to say, they came out less than fresh. My fault. Counter gal forgot my drink -shrug-, drank water. Pine Tree has the advantage of being right off the freeway and across from the Kona airport entrance. We'd just landed and were starving due to lack of decent food options on the plane ride over (and our snacks didn't satsify). It looks like a hole in the wall, but the locals were plentiful, so we were hopeful. Fried whatever is plentiful here, but also breakfasts, sandwiches, and rice bowls. I was pleasantly surprised that my fish and chips were made with fresh ono/wahoo, and the batter was light and not overused. My meal came with a side salad, so after eating a couple pieces of battered fish, I removed the batter from the rest and made myself a fish salad. Quite satisfying. Prices are reasonable, and the seating is decent. If you are in the area, it's definitely worth a try. read more

We should have known better after seeing everything served on plastic plates and with plastic utensils. The food seemed microwaved and greasy. It was like eating in a high school cafeteria. By far the best food we have had everything we have tried has been delicious. The Korean wings, spicy garlic chicken and fried poke were the best. Their macaroni salad is different and delicious because they add tuna. My friend had the loco mocoand said it's the best one he's had. read more

We stopped in for breakfast during out trip, on the recommendation of a friend, and were satisfied with our food. I had the friend rice omelet, and my husband had a fried rice bowl with a fried egg. The omelet was BIG and the eggs were what I like to call "paper eggs" where they are so thin, they're almost like paper. I personally think it's hard to pull off paper eggs without making them too dry, but Pine Tree Cafe did paper eggs well. Not bad, but not great. We drove a good distance based on previous reviews, but the food's not good enough to be a "special trip" kind of place. Yes, the menu is quite varied, that's a plus, and the Huli-Huli chicken was pretty good. The kalbi, however, fell far short of what other reviewers have said, greasy and flabby and tough, and very salty. Went to the Big Island this past weekend for a one day job and asked my driver, Mike, as we were pulling out of the Kona airport where I could get some authentic Kalua Pig. He turned right and drove a short distance to the Pine Tree Cafe. The food is in one word amazing. Great Kalua Pig. Great fried rice. So good in fact I got some Poke to go and had it later that night in my hotel room. Again amazing. I love to go where the locals go and there were plenty in the Pine Tree Cafe. Just took my second trip to Kona. Last time we were there two years ago we were starving coming out of the airport, so I yelped and this place came up as close and had good reviews. Glad I found it, because it was so good I remembered it and couldn't wait to stop by out of the airport on this trip. It's a very locals place, not near the touristy parts of town. I always get the spicy poke bowl with brown rice. For $5 it's a steal! Fills me up perfectly. The fish is always fresh, and the rice and seasonings done perfectly. My husband has gotten a few things from there over our visits, and has liked them all very much. He got the fried shrimp burger this time and he really loved it. read more

There is an unreal selection of all kinds of food. Multiple menu boards filled with anything you could ever be hungry for. The service was super quick, which is good because this place had tons of traffic going through for the entire duration of our lunch. Seems like this is a popular place for the locals in the area. I have never had a bad meal here! I recommend any of their fish dishes, especially if they have anything on special. The seared ahi with wasabi sauce is my go-to favorite with the fried munchong being my second favorite. The burgers aren't great, though, so I would stick with the other menu items. Atmosphere is super casual so be prepared for your typical Hawaiian styrofoam plate lunch kind of deal. The cashier Kelsee and kitchen worker Jelson are amazing! Excellent service and delicious food!!!! Katsu dip or fried poke plate are my go to! Unless their specials tell me otherwise ;) The Mac salad here is different on so many levels than any other Mac salad that you'll come across here in Kona. This place can get very busy! Great plate lunches and close to the airport. Very casual atmosphere, no beer or mixed drinks, but tasty and authentic.

Rental car lady told us to come here, and since it was quite packed, I had my hopes up. We got the Ahi Sandwich and some slam that came with kalua pork, cabbage & pork stir fry, some clear rice noodle dish, and rice. I shouuuuuld have waited and seen what everyone else got...which were burgers. The Ahi Sandwich was good, but I prefer my Ahi seared instead of fully cooked. The slam was eh...the pork was good but everything else was very ordinary. I didn't eat it. If I came back here, I'd get a burger and FRIES. The fries are realllllllllllly good. I'm really glad that I decided to give this place a try during our visit to the Big Island. The food are all good and cheaper than most places on the island.
