We were staying in the area and tried this diner for breakfast. The staff were friendly and the service was fairly quick. We had 3 little ones in our group, and the staff were good with them. The omelette I had was good, but the home fries were a little bland. They brought us paper cups for water instead of glass or plastic, which I didn't love. Overall, this is a fine place to grab breakfast but I didn't think it was anything special. read more

Food is standard diner fare Staff was friendly but VERY busy the days we were there. Kinda hard for us to get there so not our go to place. However when in the area, we stop. They appear to get a lot of folks staying in the area. Skiing, water park etc. So may be busy on occasion. Would highly recommend read more

We were staying at nearby Kalahari resort, and I always prefer a local diner to any overpriced and overrated resort restaurant. Reviews pointed me here, and I'm glad they did. Pioneer was a great breakfast spot, serving breakfast all day. Our boys had the chocolate chip pancakes and blueberry pancakes, my husband had their #2 breakfast combo (eggs, bacon, pancakes, home fries), and I was craving an egg, cheese, Taylor ham sandwich with home fries (I'm originally a Jersey girl, just visiting from Virginia). Everything was tasty and plentiful, for reasonable prices. Coffee was delicious too. Service was friendly and fast, and it wasn't too crowded on a Friday morning at 10am. Highly recommend, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby resorts. read more

We wont ever be back or encourage anyone to. The manager was very attentive to my husband and even though I walked in first, she acknowledged him an asked him where we would like to sit. The food was ok, (forget the ants on our table) the service was ok not worth a repeat visit. As we left the manager again ignored the rest of the party but was again very attentive to my husband. Just Yikes we would have been just fine with politeness. Maybe try acknowledging all the (female) patrons too. read more

We are from out of town. Never been there before. Saw it driving by. After some research we decided to try it. The yelp reviews don't do it justice. We sat down at 9am before it got busy. My husband and kids had waffles and pancakes. I had the biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious and the service was great. We were in and out within an hour. Highly recommend. read more

Terrible Customer Service - Manager Needs to Go I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at Pioneer Diner was disappointing enough that I feel compelled to share. Upon arrival, the manager asked how many were in our party. I told her six, but before I could explain that only four of us were present, she curtly informed me that we couldn't be seated until everyone had arrived -- and then rudely walked away before I could suggest switching to a table for four. When she finally returned, we decided to sit at the counter since she refused to seat us otherwise. Later, when our other two friends showed up, I politely asked if we could move a utensil basket to make room for them. The manager flat-out refused, saying that was "her seat" and no one could sit there -- despite there being more than enough space. To make matters worse, I noticed that she replenished her utensil supply from under the counter, making the basket completely unnecessary in the first place. The servers were kind and attentive, but the manager's attitude was dismissive, unprofessional, and frankly, controlling. It's clear she has a power complex, and her behavior created an uncomfortable and unwelcoming atmosphere. I hope the owner reads this and seriously considers finding a new manager -- because this kind of treatment will drive customers away. I know I won't be back anytime soon. read more

I noticed all the diners in the area are super cheap and this was no exception. Excellent, friendly service, great portions and good food. For the price you really cannot complain and I honestly don't know why this place isn't rated higher. There was plenty of well lit seating even on a holiday week. We went to a different highly rated breakfast diner (Hickory valley) in the area and it was twice as expensive with much worse food. It's not the best diner food I have ever had but this place needs a boost in ratings because it's one of the better options and deserves more than a 3 star rating. read more

Based on the reviews, we weren't expecting much from the Pioneer Diner. When you need a good non-Kalahari priced breakfast though, you go where you can. Pioneer Diner is located on a divided highway, and you might have to go up the road and turn around to enter the parking lot. Parking lot isn't huge and is in semi-rough condition. Interior is what you would expect from a diner, nothing fancy. Seating could be an issue during busy times. Has an extensive breakfast menu, from which I ordered the Two Fresh County Eggs with Bacon. Our groups order arrived in a reasonable amount of time. Potatoes were sliced, not hash browns, and a nice surprise. Bacon was huge slices and perfect. Rest of the table also enjoyed what they ordered. Prices were what I would expect with diner food. Overall, Pioneer Diner was a pleasant surprise and I would return. read more

My family and I have been coming to this diner for almost 18 years. At least three times a month. But our last five visits have tainted the impression we've had of this place. Aside from the usual funny looks we get from the staff and other diners, its cleanliness has come downhill. The last 5 times we had the following issues Dirty utensils Spoiled half and half And last weekend, a coffee cup with lipstick on it. That was the last straw. Either this was an attempt to keep us from going back )after all, This is Trumps country) or they're just lost the quality they had in the past, the older ladies who were originally there kept things more decent. read more

Anyone looking at this from a Kalahari hotel room definitely come here instead of getting ripped off on the 2nd floor lol. This place is phenomenal. We came here for breakfast instead of spending $30 per person for buffet breakfast at Kalahari! Best decision we made so far on the weekend trip. Service was excellent, quick and polite. The food was perfect!!! Idk why but the eggs, bacon and pancakes were so much better here than the typical diners we hit on Long Island. Small town feel inside as it probably is considered "small town" . Couldn't be better in my opinion. read more

Our usual breakfast spot when we stay at the Kalahari resort in the Poconos. This most recent visit however wasn't great. The food wasn't great - I asked for blueberry pancakes, one of the pancakes had no blueberries, the other two had maybe 3 blueberries in them. The omelettes my husband and kid's ordered they said were gross - tasted like pepperoni instead of sausage in their omelettes. I'm just hoping the issues was due to being busy and they will be back to their usual good quality when we return in a couple of months. read more

Too bad I didn't read the other reviews before going because apparently the owner (?) is frequently horribly rude. When we arrived with our two young children, the neon sign said "open" and a sign posted that they weren't seating past 12:45. Happily, it was 12:44 - just under the wire! Nope. They refused to seat us and when we questioned them, became incredibly nasty to us. Save your time and go somewhere else because apparently the food is no good anyway. read more

Service was ok, my food was not. Nice staff and food came out quickly. Regular eggs and toast were good, according to my kids. I had the Pioneer Omelet, which was Ok. The home fries (or maybe they were called hash browns) were the worst I have ever had. It looked like overcooked vermicelli and my teeth still remember how hard most pieces were. Also no flavor. Probably sitting on the grill for hours. Oh and I tried a bite of sausage link and it tasted like a sponge. Won't be back. read more

Closing my duplicate account so I am reposting this because this diner was worth transferring the review for. 05-19-2019 - I have no idea what these bad reviews are about. My boyfriend and I came here today (we are from NYC staying close by for activities). I got a cheeseburger and fries and my boyfriend got a grilled chicken cheesesteak (DELICIOUS shredded and then grilled chicken omg so good). My burger was perfect in taste and DID NOT FALL APART WHILE I ATE IT like most burgers do. My french fries were crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. So many selling points here. Our appetizer came out VERY quickly as did our food. Also, our server was SUPER attentive, quick, and friendly. I think the majority of these reviews come from high maintenance New Yorkers. 100% recommend Update: we took the lemon crumble pie to go and just ate it today ...... best pie I have ever had. read more

Looks like a little hole in the wall but we were pleasantly surprised with the decor and setup once inside. There was no wait and best of all the food was affordable! The service was ok. Our waitress was pleasant enough but was forgetful on some items requested. The quality of the food was good. The waffle was one of the best I've had! The pancakes were also great. Everything else was good but nothing to write home about just your standard eggs, bacon and home fries. I'd definitely recommend if you are in the area! read more

But if you're a respected chophouse, you can't get a steak wrong three times in a row. Frogtown offers a signature mixed grill experience that has a 16 ounce strip, a lobster tail, a crab cake, a few sides (whipped potatoes, long strips of carrots and delicious garlicky mushrooms). It's over $100, but really a pretty good value with all you get. My wife and I decided to split this. I ordered the steak medium rare, which is important to the review. The lobster tail was very good. The crab cake was meaty and good. The carrots were a highlight. The whipped potatoes were good. As was the creamed spinach the table shared. The calamari app (which was a bit heavy on the batter) and burrata app (needed more tomatoes) were both decent. The strip steak was the issue. As our server delivered the plate, she said "when you get a chance, could you cut the steak open and make sure it's done to your liking." I've never had a server in a nice steak restaurant ask me to do this before. It's not a good look. They should already know. I assumed she was concerned it was undercooked. I pressed my knife against the steak. Because I grill steaks, I knew that it was medium well or well done. I said "well, I can tell it's not underdone." I cut the steak down the middle. And it was medium well or well done. I very, very rarely send food back. But at a respected chop house, and at that price, I sent it back. And frankly, it wasn't a big deal at that stage because we had plenty of other food. A manager came out with a new steak. She apologized. Again, I was asked to cut it open. I pressed my knife against the new steak. I knew even before I cut it, because the steak squished as I pressed it. This time -- it wasn't even rare yet. So I had to send it back again. The steak came back. I cut it down the middle of one of the halves. It was a little more done, but it was on the borderline of being rare and undercooked still. I wasn't going to send the steak back a third time. So I ate the parts closest to the ends and sides. The steak was too chewy and underseasoned. I don't know what was going on. Maybe a regular chef was out and an inexperienced person had to step up. In any event, if you're famous for your steaks, you can't have those kinds of misses. Also, the plating of this experience could use a fresh look. Everything was put on the same plate and it was really crowded. 3 Stars

They made a Mickey Mouse pancake for my youngest, eggs and a bagel for the other and a large waffle for my wife. The eggs were on the small side, but delicious, hash browns were crispy, greasy and good. I can't complain it was a comforting meal. The kids were happy and my wife's waffle was enough for a second meal the next morning. The coffee was a tasty typical roasted diner coffee. We had a good family experience here and would return. And even now that we know, it can be annoying trying to get a spot. I wish they could do something about that. There double breakfast (anytime during the day) is to die for - we always take much of it home, since there is so much.

She asked for bacon instead and for homefries with the peppers and onions. The order she got was a western omlette with ham and a hash brown. She called 3 times before someone picked up at this point it's now 2:35pm. She explained to the woman what occurred. The woman then told her yeah we ran out of bacon this weekend so we gave you ham. My sister said I understand you ran out of bacon but I was given an order that I didn't ask for. My sister does not eat ham, and cannot eat this meal she was given. The employee then tells her "well like I said we ran out of bacon so there's nothing I can do for you" with attitude. So my sister told her "the order should've never been given to me to begin with. If there was an issue with missing ingredients then I should've been informed." A restaurant does not have the right to create what ever meal seems fit and then charge the client. If you're paid for a service, your job is to fulfill that service, not wing it and make executive decisions at someone's expense. The employee should have told person picking up the meal that there was no bacon and then they could decide whether they wanted the meal with ham, wanted to order something else, or cancel. Being that the order was placed over the phone the duty of the restaurant was to call my sister back and give notice of the situation, with solutions or different options. My sister then told the woman this was paid with a card and she would like a refund being that this was their error and no one ia going to eat the meal. The employee had the audacity to say no. They're closed. How are you closed and picking up the phone at the restaurant? Actually, how are you closed at 2:37 when your hours are to 3pm. If you can answer calls, take people's money, then you can process a refund. My sister then asked if she could at least have her name written down so management can either have the meal remade tomorrow the way it was requested or refunded. My sister was doing the job of the rude employee and was trying to look for reasonable solutions. The employee said " I mean I don't even know if they'll have bacon tomorrow like I said we ran out". My sister told her she doesn't care if there's no bacon, just a refund. My sister didn't receive the western omlette with bacon nor did she receive the home fries. She was given an entirely different order. The employee once again with an attitude said " I don't know, come tomorrow and maybe someone can help you." My sister then told her "no there's no maybe's, you can't just decide to give a customer whatever you want because you ran out of ingredients and say yeah I cant help you, or maybe someone will." The female employee then hung up the phone on my sister. This is very poor customer service and I'm highly disappointed with how they handled the matter. Management needs to train their staff on professionalism and accountability. Order accuracy is a BASIC STANDARD. Refusal to fix the mistake shows a LACK of respect for the customer's time and money and hanging up is RUDE. A business that cannot handle situations with honesty and integrity doesn't deserve to have a business or customer loyalty.

Once seated, we were greeted promptly with water and our server took our initial drink, appetizer, and dinner orders without issue. The appetizers arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but after that, the service began to decline. We had to ask twice just to order a second round of drinks. When the entrees arrived, everyone at the table received their meal except me. The server asked if everyone had their food, and I told her that I was still waiting for my Steak Frites special. She checked her order book, said something, and walked away. Unfortunately, no one returned to update us. After waiting another 10 minutes, I encouraged the rest of my family and friends to begin eating so their meals wouldn't get cold. When there was still no update, I flagged down another server, who said they would check with the kitchen. A few minutes later, they returned and said they weren't sure what had happened but that my meal was being prepared. After another 10 minutes passed, I asked to speak with a manager. I was told there wasn't a manager available and that they understood my frustration. By this point, it was nearly 9:30 p.m., my entire table had nearly finished eating, and I still hadn't received my dinner. When my steak finally arrived, it wasn't what I had ordered. I had ordered the NY Strip Steak Frites special but instead received a 10-ounce sirloin. Again, the explanation was simply that they weren't sure what had happened--perhaps another guest had received my order or there had been a mistake in the kitchen. To the restaurant's credit, they removed my steak from the bill. However, what disappointed me most wasn't the mistake itself--it was the lack of communication and customer service. Throughout the entire situation, no one came back to provide updates, apologize directly, or offer a meaningful resolution. In fact, my server never spoke to me directly about the issue after realizing there had been a problem; I learned my meal had been removed from the bill through another member of our party. Mistakes happen in every restaurant, especially on a busy night. What leaves a lasting impression is how those mistakes are handled. Unfortunately, while the food we did receive was good, the customer service fell well short of what I expected.
