    Crab cakes with roasted vegetables

I finally got the opportunity to eat at Pizzaiolo in Market Square for a business dinner. Pleasantly surprised. I didn't get standard Italian fare here, but crab cakes with remoulade sauce. Well cooked, soft melt-in-you-mouth texture. The green beans that came with it were well seasoned and crisp. And lots of appetizers went around (meatballs, calamari, bread) that I don't remember well enough to write about (there was red wine too), but everything was delicious. Our server was great too. I think we shared tiramisù cakes for dessert. But I really enjoyed this place and would come again on my own sometime.

Tried to get lunch at Pizzaiola Primo Market Square's bar on Friday afternoon. The bar had only one other patron and the bartenders were too busy talking to get me a drink. Walked out.

I sometimes feel that Downtown PGH is a bit spotty, and always come here with a purpose - generally to go to one of the theaters or the symphony. This is a spot that is worth putting on your list though. It is a small restaurant in Market Square that I have easily walked by on many occasions. The food is beautifully and deliciously served, and it is classy, even though it is next to a Starbucks and a Subway. :) Get a drink, an appetizer, and one of their spins on classic Italian and you and your belly will leave happily.

Saturday dinner reservations for 2 at 7:30pm. We were in between here and another place within the area and settled on Primo due to the motley options. However, that can also be a curse in decision making. Took an uber and got dropped off, checking in with the staff inside the front door. Small area for seating on the first floor with an open kitchen and a pizza oven visible. We were sat upstairs that has a large bar and traditional seating. Place reminds me of the Italian style shops that restaurants really lean on - tile floor, dark hardware and white light shades. We started with sharing fried mozzarella and a caprese salad. The cheese was pretty standard, hard to mess that up. The caprese was good and executed nicely. Would have liked to have more balsamic glaze or a side of it - but the flavor was very good. For my meal, I went with the chicken parm and subbed in rigatoni rather than spaghetti. The rigatoni was al dente and really good. Sauce is very smooth and thin, not much chunkiness to it which isn't a bad thing. The chicken was good - also coming out PIPING hot. Overall a solid meal. We skipped dessert and headed nearby for dessert elsewhere. Service was good and the staff taking care of us were attentive and took care of us quickly. Would recommend to try.

The Marketplace Square is undergoing a huge renovation, but luckily most of the restaurants are able to remain open during construction. We wanted some Italian and this was a good choice for that. Beautifully simple old world building with a bit of a modern day flair. We ordered the Burrata salad which was excellent, and the Stracciatella pizza, both to share between us. We enjoyed both of these dishes immensely. Service was good and the meal was sufficient without breaking the bank.

The food/wine here isn't terrible. But for the price, it is not worth it in my opinion. The pizzas were okay, the margarita and the calabrese without sausage, but they weren't that flavorful. The wine options were fine, but nothing unique for the price point. The tiramisu and cheesecake were the highlights of the entire meal. Don't think I'd come back, but I do like how many vegetarian options are available and how you are able to customize the dishes to suit your dietary needs. I would come back to try the pastas. The staff here were really nice though!

Greens and beans were incredible here. Chicken parm was good too! And server was attentive and really good with our large group. It was just so cold inside though. Our server said whenever it gets below a certain temperature the heating just can't keep up because it's an old building. If you're good to wear your jacket you'll be in for a nice meal.

Came here for lunch during the week and split a pizza with my coworker. Wedding soup was awesome. We sat at the bar & had great service! Was relatively fast. If you're a pizza and ranch kind of person, heads up they do not have any ranch.

This restaurant is clearly very popular and highly-rated. The ambiance is classy but modern. They seem to get lots of customers, so reservations may be recommended. Got the Burrata Salad and Wood-Fired Margherita Pizza, as well as the Spaghetti Pomodoro, which I forgot to take a photo of. The ingredients are very fresh and the dishes are well-executed. The Tiramisu (which doesn't have eggs) was delicious. Since the food is meant to be more fresh and natural tasting, the flavor is on the mild side. But they provide seasoning options on the side, if needed. The waiting staff is all very positive energy, accommodating about food preferences and alternatives, and good at what they do.

This place has been pretty consistent over the few years I've been eating at the restaurant. Service is pretty good, and food comes out quick even if they are busy. Their pasta is always cooked al dente (the way it should be) and their sauces are light and savory. Their stuffed pepper dish is superb, with lots of melted cheese on top. Every time I've been here, I've been sat outside, but the interior has two floors of seating with the bar on the second floor and is relatively small but relaxing.

Ordered bread pudding for desert and it was incredible. I will be back just for it! The portion was big, so I even had leftovers.

I loved this spot!! We already can't wait to come back Great food! I took my dad here for dinner because he was spending 1 night in Pittsburgh during a bike ride from Pittsburgh to Maryland. He loves italian food and places with outdoor dining The ambience is nice, the outside seating is nice, with fake greenery blocking some of the downtown view. You truly don't feel like you're downtown. The inside is nice as well, it's not a huge spot so it can get crowded The food was great! My dad loved the ravioli. I loved the pizza. It's definitely authentic and Italian style, very very thin, but I prefer that. My fiancé had the Cacio e Pepe and had chicken added to it (you can pick a protein for $ extra) he also really enjoyed it and practically licked the plate clean! We didn't get any drinks because it was so hot outside, nobody wanted alcohol. But they do have a pretty extensive drink menu, as well as a $25 corkage fee - steep- (but still probably cheaper than buying 3-4 glasses of wine in a restaurant!)

Came here for lunch on Mother's Day and absolutely loved it. Our server was amazing and had the best bubbly personality. Love the seating and layout of this place. My son absolutely loved his pizza, I grabbed a small bite and indeed it was good. I like that there's a separate private seating area upstairs that you can rent out for special occasions. Location was great at the Market square.

Ask the Community - Pizzaiolo Primo Market Square

Are they open again? They closed in June but was wondering if they have reopened yet.

Not that I'm aware of. I posted a similar question a few weeks ago. I walk through Market Square everyday and have seen no signs of life. Too bad.

Does anyone know if Pizzaiolo is going to re-open? They tried for a few days when we went to green, but have been closed since.

They're open! They get super busy though, so I'd recommend making a reservation online for a place to sit.

Should we dress fancy to go here, or are jeans and a nicer sweater okay?

Jean would be alright. Casual but clean casual. The first floor is casual but that would probably be alright upstairs too. Not jeans with holes and no hats inside please!… Read more

We stopped by while walking around the Strip District looking for a quick lunch. During lunch service, you order at the kiosk, find a seat, and clean up after yourself, which makes for a casual and easy experience. Food: The tomato sauce here is probably some of the best red sauce I've had in a long time. We ordered the Caprese Panzanella, meatballs, crispy potatoes, and spaghetti with red sauce. Everything was delicious, but the salad completely stole the show for me. It was packed with fresh ingredients, bright flavors, and so many different textures that worked perfectly together. Every dish tasted fresh, simple, and executed well. Service: For lunch, you're mostly taking care of yourself, but the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming whenever we interacted with them. This is one of those places that doesn't need a long review because you really just need to try it for yourself. I'd absolutely recommend stopping by if you're visiting Pittsburgh for either lunch or dinner. Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and a fun atmosphere. It is a very cozy Italian restaurant that's serving homemade Italian food like your Nonna would make for you. We showed up on a Tuesday night and it was packed. It was around six or 6:30 in the evening and when we first got there, we were told it would be about a 20 minute wait before a two top was available. But the host came back and asked if we didn't mind sitting by the kitchen they could see us right away. We chose to sit by the kitchen, which honestly was probably the best option because it was actually a little bit quieter because there was a very large party that was celebrating a birthday and they had live music going on so it was hard to hear when you were in the main dining space but back by the kitchen it's a little bit quieter and we could actually hear ourselves talk. My husband got the penne with meatballs and the penny was nicely cooked with a beautiful tomato Bass sauce and the meatballs or some of the best Italian meatball he's ever had. His only complaint was that there were only two in the order and he wished there would've been three. I got the spinach and ricotta, stuffed ravioli, and by far one of the best raviolis I've ever had. The ravioli are large so there's only about five in a dish but they're packed fully and the flavoring and seasoning is absolutely spectacular. It's got a beautiful sauce like accompanies it and the chew you can definitely tell it is handmade pasta/ravioli. Our server, Emma was absolutely spectacular and was so kind. We truly enjoyed our experience here and would highly recommend anybody to check it out if you're in the area. But we also do recommend make your reservations ahead of time. The waitresses are friendly and have great recommendations. I got to try their linguine rustica (essentially the clam pasta dish), a cappuccino, some cherry soda, and soup of the day, as well as complimentary bread. They got that bread out very quickly! Very soft, and served with quite high quality olive oil. The bottle has both olive oil and balsamic! The soup of the day was quite good as well. It was some sort of beef broth, I think may a beef and bean soup. Chickpeas in there as well. Next time, I might try the salad. The salad they have as a side is so good, an amazing portion and seems so fresh and tasty. The mains were excellent. Very good pasta with clam sauce. Lots of clam meat and a flavorful oil based sauce. My friend had some red penne with chicken and enjoyed that as well. Great portions, pretty fair prices. Finally, great drinks as well. Very memorable cherry cola that I believe the company is owned by the owner's son. Real cane sugar, very good. The cappuccino was great as well. Definitely come here!

For my entrée I enjoyed their amazing Spinach Tagliatelle which came perfectly presented and tasted amazing! Spoiler: it's not the name. Clean, clear, smells like any other bourbon until that first sip reveals just how perfectly blended it is. The kind of drink you savor while watching the sun set on the horizon. Crème Brûlée Espresso Martini - As my heart rate settled from the first drink I needed something to kick it back up. One sip and I could've read the dictionary cover to cover without blinking. Close your eyes and the aroma takes you straight to that first cup of coffee fresh out of the pot. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Martini - Beautiful presentation but flatter in flavor than the previous two. However for a final cocktail that was exactly the point -- the perfect calm down after a rich and spicy meal. - Food: 4.25 / 5 Bread, Oil & Dip: A great palate cleanser that quickly taught me the chef loves his spices. The dip was described as "Italian Hummus" and if this is the standard I completely understand the hype. Appetizer - Ceviche Peruviano: Think of that forgotten appetizer thrown together last minute for a dinner party, a hodgepodge of raw fish and vegetables. But every bite delivers an explosion of complementary flavors, and that sneaky hint of spice hiding in the raw fish bites will wake you up immediately. Pre-pasta - Tuscan Kale Salad: Needed something to cleanse my palate after the spicy ceviche and frankly I am tired of Caesar salad. Not a kale fan normally because it tastes like dirt, but the lemon vinaigrette adds just enough flavor to make that dirt genuinely enjoyable. Pasta - Cacio E Pepe: Easily the highlight. My buddy describes it perfectly as fancy fettuccine. I have never liked fettuccine until now. My server, who prepared it himself, recommended adding house chili oil for a slight kick. I went one click past recommended and even then it was still divine. I would order it again without hesitation. Entrée - Veal Chop, Lobster Tail & Vegetables (Chef's preference): After riding Cloud 9 all evening I felt like Icarus flying too close to the sun. One word: bland. The veal was overcooked with all the flavor locked into the fat, and the lobster tail tasted like a convenience store impulse buy. The best use of those bones would be soup stock. I had no desire to finish it. Dessert - Tuxedo Crème Brûlée: As much as I wanted the house raspberry tiramisu I left the choice to my server after some back and forth. He recommended this for its balance of sweetness and berry bitterness and he was right. The perfect final note to tap out on. Service: 10 / 5 Even now, I still don't think I tipped my server enough. Dining alone, he made the evening feel like I had a companion at the table. Great conversation, personalized attention, and a level of service that few will ever experience. It was a pleasure to talk to someone who knows and appreciates food as much as I do. If you want an exceptional dining experience, request AJ as your server. I promise you won't be disappointed. Vibe: 5 / 5 Presentation, presentation, presentation. That is the theme every dish and the environment itself conveys the moment you walk through the doors at Alla Famiglia. This is a place for those who want to feel bourgeois for the night. Overall 4.25 / 5: My goal in life is to become a regular somewhere. There is something special about finding a place you love so much that every visit still feels like a new experience. Alla Famiglia is exactly that type of place. During my visit I was introduced to new items and dishes not listed on the menu, which only adds to that sense of discovery. It may be a while before I return since this place isn't cheap and my restaurant bucket list is long, but I will be back. Hopefully AJ is still there when I do, because that is exactly the kind of server you want in your corner as a regular. Recommend? Absolutely

I also wish they were crunchier. We saw a man order the Stromboli and it was ginormous but looked delicious. He was a big guy and only ate about 25% of it. Got my mom a corned beef sandwich and she said it one of the best she had ever had. We're Irish and she loves them. There are lots of great things on the menu and will be back to try other things.
