One week before dining at Plaza Café I was sent a video showing the first cut into the most beautiful eggs benedict I've seen in a long time. The egg in the video was cooked to benedict perfection. The yolk was flowing like lava. It brought tears to my benedict loving eyes. Fast forward one week, and I'm now personally sitting in the café where the magic happened. I look at their menu, trying to decide from the long list of benedicts, which one to choose. I kept it simple and went with the classic. Fifteen minutes later, what I'm sure is going to be the best eggs benedict of my life, appear before me. I cut into it; my eyes full of anticipation of the yolk river. The disappointment is instant. Instead of my beautiful gold river, I get a completely solid yolk. Not even a tad runny. It's like ordering a steak rare and they bring it to you burnt black. The hollandaise sauce suffers from the same issue I've seen more and more lately. It's not homemade, and you can tell. It tastes more like gravy than hollandaise. I over-exaggerate a little bit only because I absolutely love eggs benedict. It is my favorite breakfast dish ever, and I have high standards when it comes to making them. They don't serve O'Brian potatoes, so I ordered hash browns. I'm not much of a fan of hash browns anyway, and these didn't renew my taste for them. Crispy on the outside, mushy on the inside. The experience wasn't all bad. The coffee was actually really good. Even though the café was packed, we were seated right away. The service was also very nice and very fast. Because I know they can make better eggs benedict (I've seen the proof), I will be back. I'm not in any hurry however. read more

My husband and I were in Pleasant Hill and decided to look up a breakfast/brunch spot. Plaza Cafe came up on Yelp as fairly highly rated. Unfortunately we were very underwhelmed. We had to wait for a little bit to be seated, which we expected since this was a highly rated place. But sadly everything was just meh after that. Our server was very slow and we constantly had to flag other servers down to get her attention. All of the other servers seemed to be very on top of things, so it was unfortunate that we got the one server that really really wasn't (and I think the other servers knew)... We observed her serve the others in our area very slowly too, and she actually made some mistakes with their orders and blamed it on the cooks. Poor form. And then came the food, which was just okay. Considering the service, we were expecting the food to be really good to justify the Yelp rating, but that simply was not the case. The food was just... okay. Sadly, I think Denny's and iHop are better. Did we go on an off-day or something? Really don't understand how this place is highly rated... Maybe it's good for Pleasant Hill standards? read more

l would have only given 1 star but the place appears to be family owned/family run and the staff is always friendly and kind. Today I picked up a to go order and brought it home. The Chorizo scramble was tasty but watery from the tomatoes. I didn't get my toast with it, apparently they forgot to put it in the bag. I asked for crispy hash browns, I got soft and mushy hash browns. I asked tor crispy bacon, it was floppy and chewy. The other omelette meal we ordered didn't come with its toast either. They appeared to be very busy when I went in but that's no excuse, that's when restaurants show what they are made of!! ATTENTION TO DETAIL goes a long way. read more

Love this place! You could even call me a regular here and I have conflicting feelings about whether or not to tell people how good it is... It's simple, homemade food, that is consistently good. Their servings are very generous and the prices are inexpensive. You get your food promptly and the wait staff couldn't be any nicer. The decor and ambiance is very relaxed. It ain't fancy but it's comfortable, especially if you snag one of their booths. They excel at breakfast. My husband loves the bacon here. It's thick and they give you a generous portion. He raved about the chorizo scramble he had today. I'm more of a lunch person, and I can tell you their sandwiches and salads are really something! I particularly like the chicken salad salad and the shrimp/crab Loui. They have specials every day. Friday is crab melt day, one of my faves. Solid place to get breakfast on the weekends. It was a lazy Saturday morning, it was rainy, neither of us wanted to cook so here we are. Cash only, there is an ATM on site. This is a no frills kind of place, looks like a lot of locals frequent this place. My waffle and eggs with chicken apple sausage was good but man, when did something so simple cost $11? My honey's chicken fried steak had a delicious gravy over it and I couldn't stop mopping the sauce up with some toast. Service was fast and prompt. If you want a simple, good breakfast, this is definitely a good choice to pop in for the weekend. But is it just me, or is the cost of food just ridiculous nowadays. read more

My husband and I ate here two days in a row on stayvacation. The food was amazing and the service was great too. The first day I had the crab avocado toast and it is so worth the 25 minute wait. The fresh fruit was amazing I've never seen a fruit bowl that offers bananas and cherries so unique. My husband had eggs and ham and he said the ham was so delicious. Wow great breakfast find! This hole in the wall place offers plenty of parking since it located inside a shopping center. This place is busy! But was seated immediately. I ordered the sausage patty Eggs Benedict. I'm usually an omelet type of guy but wanted to try something different. Wow! Now I'm hooked on their Eggs Benedict. The presentation was nice. The eggs were fluffy and was done correctly. The sausage was moist and flavorful. The gravy was poured all over this bad boy and was really creamy and thick. Overall every bite was enjoyable! I also ordered a side of bacon which was 5 pieces of thick cut bacon. Bacon was crispy and good. The portions are just right. I also tried their French toast. The dream has toast was soft and fluffy and was not too sweet. It was perfect. The food was amazing and deserves 5 stars how ever it did take 35-40 minutes to get the food so hat was a wait. Stopped by for a late breakfast on a weekday. Friendly staff upon walking in..."Seat yourself" she said with friendly voice and a smile. Extensive menu selection, but I opted for my standard - pancakes, eggs, and sausage (skipped the bacon this time as I had a craving for sausage). Food came out quickly, probably cuz it was late on a weekday. Nothing spectacular about my food...it's just a standard breakfast. Maybe if I got out of my comfort zone and tried something new I'd have something good to say about it!‍‍ My favorite part? The cream for the coffee comes in a little server. I'm sad to say after the third visit, we won't be coming anymore. The first time we went I had the crab avocado toast and it was delicious. Second time, I had the crab Benedict and it was incredibly soggy and the hash browns were just sliced potatoes no "hash" about them or flavor. We figured we'd give another try and I'm so sad to say it was disappointing again. Got a veggie scramble and I received an undone omelet completely undercooked and again we received slice flavorless potatoes called "hash browns". On the upside, the orange juice was good. This place has been my mom's and my favorite breakfast joint in PH. Yes, it's a bit small, and the seating is a little cramped, but the family that owns the restaurant as well the servers and cooks that staff it are very friendly and give great service! It's a neighborhood joint, so you see a lot of the same faces coming back for the great food they serve here. I think they even keep people's special mugs for when they come in, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, I recommend getting the fresh fruit of you like to substitute hash browns for something on the healthier side. My mom always gets it and it always has every fruit you can think of, sometime including dragon fruit! It's delicious. I usually get the breakfast burrito or breakfast sandwich on an English muffin with Canadian bacon. Hits the spot every time. Pros: This simple diner has some seriously good brunch/lunch food! It is located in an unassuming corner of a safeway plaza but that means the parking is plentiful! The waitress was really cheery and attentive to our table. The eggs benedict here is seriously the real deal. They serve their eggs benedict with seafood combinations... I got the avocado and shrimp while my wife got the avocado and dungeness crab. Verdict? DELICIOUS. The portions are huge so when you add the hashbrowns or whatever side you choose, you will definitely be full! Cons: If you haven't read yet, this is a cash only place... boo. This place is horrible! I spent over 50 bucks on a variety of items and it was all disgusting. The eggs Benedict was the most blan thing I have ever had. The hash browns were undercooked and also very blan. The bacon! Seriously how do you mess up bacon?! Tasted like it came right out of the microwave. The waffle was incredibly dry and tasteless. Always looking for a good dive breakfast place. This one was right on point. Got seated right away, which I'm sure is not normal being that it's is very small. Very friendly staff with only one waitress and she does an amazing job. I got the regular eggs Benedict despite the million of reviews saying to try the California Benedict. I'm a rebel what can I say. It was really good! At $9 I was very impressed. Served with a heaping side of hash browns. I however am not super impressed with the hash browns. Pops got the ham and cheese omelette which was the size of the plate came with hash browns and toast. He said it was all good. My ice tea was really good. Not watered down. Love this place! Went with my husband and ordered the classic eggs benny, the CA eggs benny, and the brioche French toast. All the eggs on the Benny's were cooked perfect! Hollandase sauce was flavorful but not too heavy. The French toast was amazing. Parking is plenty, however most of the ones near the restaurant are 30 minute spots, so be aware of the green spots! We walked in and were warmly greeted by a well-staffed, small restaurant. There were several antique sepia toned photos on the walls. There were three booths, and several round and square tables, for us to seat ourselves at. I also noted some dusty high chairs, booster seats stacked.. and did I mention some outdoor seating facing Bed Bath and Beyond? Our waitress was Norma. She took our drink orders, food orders and got our food out within 15 minutes! I ordered the Florentine Benedict with Hash Browns and a Hot Chocolate, while the bf ordered the Country Fried Steak with White Toast and Hashed Browns. Serving sizes were well-portioned. The Florentine Benedict eggs were perfect, sauce was generously poured, canadian bacon/ham came in four slices staggered on the toasted english muffins. Hashed browns were okay, not too dry or flaky. The bf said his Country Friend Steak was bland.. the gravy, though generously poured, needed more flavor.. but the Chicken, eggs and hashed browns were to his liking. Oh! And they are a CASH ONLY restaurant, though they do have an ATM within the restaurant. Our total came out to a couple dollars short of $30. OVERALL, I'd give Plaza Cafe 3.5ish stars. I LOVE HOLLANDAISE SAUCE! I would eat a bowl of it a la carte if I didn't look so silly doing it. However, I don't usually order eggs benedict at restaurants for fear of being disappointed (and it's typically pricey for small portions). When the food arrived, I knew I was not going to be disappointed. My eggs benedict was SMOTHERED in yellow sauce, almost overflowing. I took two delicious bites and looked up at my boyfriend, who had already inhaled half of his omelet. Even with so much sauce, it didn't overpower the crab or avocado. Every bite was excellent, saucy goodness. I was getting full after finishing the first half, but I forced myself to finish it all, since it was SO good and I figured it wouldn't keep. (Note to self: Don't do force feed yourself again, no matter how tasty the food) I didn't eat the hash. I don't know how you make hash browns taste watery, but that's how they tasted. Went in for breakfast about 9:00 am. The cafe was about 1/3 full. Sat myself. I'll make this easy. I had coffee, eggs over medium, hamburger patty, hash browns and sour dough toast. Everything was prepared to perfection. I am personally a well experienced home cook, so I know when things are done right and I rarely can say everything was perfect, but on this day, everything was, including the service. $16 and change + tip, Total $20 bucks. read more

Perhaps this review is biased, because I am totally addicted to the crab benedict here. Heaps of dungeness crab, fresh avocado, and a perfectly poached egg! The hashbrowns are also always delicious. I love, love , love it, and it's amazingness was recently proven to me when I tried a crab benedict at another place. It was fake crab(!!), tiny slivers of avocado, and burnt little bits of potato. I'm sorry, Plaza Cafe, I won't stray again. I'll be back asap for the best benedict ever. I can't speak to any of the other dishes, since I order the same thing every time here! Not sure what happened to Plaza cafe. I guess new owners? If you come here for your lunch break, like today, got to the place at 12:15, it 12:45 and we followed up on our orders. The server who showed no sense of urgency said that there were 2 more tables ahead of us and they havent started our order yet but we saw a table where they got their food first and we areived before they did!! We said we'll pay for the drinks, and we paid $6.25. The server said, "you came at a bad time." And that was it. We just walked out. This happened the last time and we thought it was a one time thing but nope. Seems to happen pretty consistently. They need more cooks. There's 2 people cooking and chopping and doing everything. 2 servers and 1 of them being really useless. By the way, our orders were french toast and eggs benedict. So this is my 3rd 5-star rating, but I'm new to Yelp and I decided to kick-off my reviews with the places I frequent. Plaza Cafe is my Saturday late morning/early afternoon tradition. Every Saturday after training at the gym (Combat Fitness off Bancroft for Muay Thai and MMA) my boyfriend and friends from the gym head over to Plaza Cafe. (Sort of counter-productive you might say, but after a couple hours of hitting the bag or rolling around you deserve a nice sized meal!) The breakfast menu is extensive and includes not-so-common items like pecan waffles and buckwheat pancakes. Their portions are huge, the service is homey, the atmosphere is casual, and their prices are affordable. There's something on the menu for every palette! (There isn't a kid's menu, but one entree is enough to share.) Located in the Safeway shopping center off Contra Costa Boulevard and next to Matsu Sushi, this is a great place to bring the family. It can get a little crowded and sometimes hot - but the service and food are consistent. I can always count on Plaza Cafe to have a home-style ambiance!! read more

The English muffin was dry and kind of stale. Good value for the price, but I wish I had gotten the breakfast sandwich on croissant. Mmmm mmm, so yummy!!! I'm happy I chose to eat here for breakfast. I was feeling something light and healthy and chose their Mixed Berry and chicken salad, seriously no regrets! It tasted just as good as it looked. (They should rename it BERRY Good Chicken Salad, get it? ) I also got a side of fruit, and it tasted so fresh and refreshing! The awesomeness of this cafe doesn't stop at the food, the service was so exceptional! Our server was real nice and courteous. Only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because our server was great. However I feel this place is only 1 star worthy because it is very cramped. The food however was pretty mediocre. I ordered the chicken fried steak and honestly I could barely enjoy it. The bits of bacon in the gravy just completely ruined the flavor. Made it taste sweet and just not a really enjoy meal. The eggs and hash browns were good and serving portions fair. The price wasn't too bad. $30 for two people is a fairly decent price but as I said the food just tasted off. read more
