4 stars they average, my arse. Ok maybe that is a bit harsh and maybe I caught them at the wrong time(Final week of Mardi Gras) but going based on experience 1 star seems more than fair. I sat down and quickly ordered their steak and eggs a homemade biscuit and a beer. From then on I waited an hour, not one person came to me to see if I needed something else or to give me an ETA on food. When I finally asked a random waitress if she can check on it before I leave my food was served. Waste of time, the steak was terrible, the eggs were bland and the homemade biscuit had to be days old. I could have used it as a weapon. I do not recommend, half a star. read more

Great, classic diner. They do a hearty breakfast at a fair price, and the servers are charming too. Glad I decided to stop in. I ordered the vegetable omelette with added jalapeno, side of hash browns, and toast. Everything was done fine. The omelette was extra spicy, just the way I like it, and the potatoes were well seasoned. Portions were so generous that I boxed some to bring home. I was never left without water and the check was brought before I was finished. Can't complain. They also deliver, which is something I'll remember when I relocate to Nola. read more

Now, I have eaten a restaurants all over the world. Truly, some of the worst looking had the best food. I have spoken to quite a few chefs, had many kitchen tours, collected a few secret recipes. Gene is on a quest for authentic Cajun food. After the kitchen tour I WAS SPEECHLESS. The ladies room is in the 12 by 10 kitchen. Need I say more. Oh, yes. Now the food was good. I had a simple grilled shrimp salad. I did have to pick a few shell bits off the eggs and shrimp. I could not bring myself to use the salad dressing. Gene had red beans and rice with sausage and said it was tasty. Would I recommend this place. Oh no, no, no, no, just no. At least 50 health violations and I'm blind. Why did we eat here. Greeks own diners. NOLA loves a big breakfast. This old school joint was the perfect marriage of both! I went basic - 2 eggs over easy, sausage, hash browns and a biscuit. Eggs were perfectly cooked Sausage excellent mix of meat, spice and fat! Hash brown crispy goodness Biscuit - dense, flakey, butter as a biscuit should be! Things I had to pass on but looked amazing Grits - buttery cheesy and creamy Gyro - omelette They're only open for breakfast and lunch. Coffee not espresso. I really enjoyed the homey vibes of this place. Thus small restaurant on St.Charles was built in 1946 and it's still dishing up some good food. I ordered the catfish and eggs with a side of gnash browns and my boyfriend ordered the chicken and waffles. His dish stole the show but my fish was fried to perfection. I enjoyed the seat your self rule and the hospitality was spot on. FYI the bar stool seats are horrible on the buttocks. read more

After a lovely stay at a local hotel nearby, my girlfriend and I headed to this well-reviewed diner before heading back home. Having spent the last week seeing how troubled the city was due to Covid, I was eager to eat the breakfast here and kept my mind open. What we experienced STILL blew our minds. The diner had a quaint and homely feel, easy to like with kind staff, who welcomed us upon entry and invited us to choose our own table. We chose a comfy booth. That's where the experience took a turn. We ordered our food, some basic breakfast items available anywhere and threw in some drinks. Shortly after, the food started arriving... in four separate deliveries several minutes apart. First was my basic breakfast of two scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, which showed up before the grape juice that was ordered at the same time. Eggs are my favorite food and one that is nearly impossible to fail in cooking for any breakfast diner. The eggs looked nice but lacked ANY flavor and had already cooled to room temperature. They were so bland, that not even whatever they were cooked in could be tasted. Completely bland. I could only eat one of the small eggs given. The hash browns were breakfast potato chunks served with lots of onions. I love both, so that's not much of an issue to me, but these also lacked flavor much more than the overpowering onions. Then, out came the side of biscuits and gravy. They promote their biscuits as homemade, so that excited me. I wish they weren't. They were dry and the gravy was completely lacking in flavor, thin and in heavy need of sausage thrown in to fix the whole dish. We also got an extra biscuit delivered for no known reason and it came on a small plate that had a refried bean, chunky residue on the plate (seen in picture). I managed to eat less than one biscuit with gravy. The rye bread showed up next. It was so small, that I could only compare it to a smashed loaf of bread. It was pre-buttered, but so hard that I had use my canines just to bite it off. Molars were needed to chew it. Had half of a slice and allowed my girlfriend the honor of showing her teething abilities with this rocky bread. She managed one bite but obviously it was to prove her toughness. Oh, and after all that, the grape juice arrived. At first, I said to her that it was the best thing on the table, with a fruity front. But the back... it was dry. Grape juice. It gave me dry mouth. How?!?! The girlfriend got hot cakes, which were standard, but... you guessed it... were dry. We both had to drink liquid after every bite. Not an exaggeration. Her bacon was wet and fused together, much like the mounds you would experience at a Vegas buffet. Her chocolate milk had a rough consistency, as if they mixed in some chocolate powder and didn't stir it all the way. I don't write many reviews, but do use Yelp to figure out where and where not to eat. This place needs serious attention to their basic American breakfast dishes and some cooks who understand basic seasoning, because the food is nowhere near the kindness of the staff and the nice diner atmosphere. read more

No frill hole in the wall mom & pops kinda place. They have been open for a long time and never remodeled. The restroom is located through the kitchen and it's pretty filthy but the food was comforting and our server was a doll! Please - U is an old school diner. I love old school diners. I have driven down St. Charles Avenue an untold number of times in my life. On several occasions I noticed this place, but immediately discounted it because of the funny name and outward appearance. As the years passed and I finally learned about not judging a book by its cover, I reconsidered my initial impression. I lucked out and found a parking spot directly in front, but I would not count on that being available. If you come, use caution parking in the Walgreen's lot on the corner as they advertise towing non-customers. I was in a breakfast mood so I ordered the western omelet and hash browns. Their version of the western omelet was pretty good. The eggs formed a thin shell and were filled with a good amount of ham, cheese and vegetables. They definitely did not skimp on fillings. Oftentimes when the eggs form a thin shell you can end up with the perfect ratio of egg to stuffing and that maximizes tastiness. There is a mathematical formula if you're some sort of math nerd, but I just know it when I see it. Their version had the thin shell of eggs, but the ratio was slightly off. It was a very good omelet, but my quest for the perfect ratio will continue. I really enjoyed my trip to Please-U. My Chihuahua service dog Panchita and I like this restaurant very much. Nick and Helen do a tremendous job with this place. It has wonderful old New Orleans memorabilia and all the charm of an old-fashioned diner. Before we ever set foot in this diner, people told me that the less impressive a restaurant is in this town, the better the food will be. The first time we walked by the store - which looks like a little hole in the wall - a couple of locals told me that it is the best place to get breakfast and lunch. And that has proved to be true. The three times we had breakfast there, the food has been some of the best breakfast food I have had anywhere. The hashbrowns are fabulous, with the potato skins still in there. Everything we have eaten there has been scrumptious. Stephanie served us about a month ago and was a top-flight server. On that visit, Helen told me the story of her working in the kitchen - and then her husband Nick and her buying the shop from his brother. Today Helen told me that the store was opened in 1946 - the year of my birth. I feel I have some real karma with this fabulous little diner that looks like the diners of my youth. When we ate there this morning, Saint Charles Avenue was absolutely electric as we swing into the two big weekends of Mardi Gras. The diner was absolutely slammed for breakfast and all the servers were working their little tails off. Jamie has been our server in our last two visits to the restaurant. She is both extremely competent and amazingly charming. When we had been there about a half hour, the breakfast rush was starting to ease and she took some moments to chat with me at my table. Found this restaurant while riding the trolley through New Orleans, and fell in love instantly! My husband, a NOLA native, had returned after leaving there as a child. He had fond memories of the foods he got to enjoy while growing up there as a child in gradeschool, and was eager to come refresh his palate. Much to his disappointment, the foods we had tasted to so far on this short trip, did not quite meet his expectations. However, we were fortunate enough to encounter this tiny little diner, looking to possibly get an authentic meal. While he did not see his beloved original po'boy, we settled on a muffaletta, a meal he did not quite remember at all, but POOF, one bite and it all came flooding back in! We haven't gotten our food yet, but we are already loving it here. The service is great and they have the cleanest bathroom we've seen so far. They went out of their way to move tables for a party of 8 an hour before closing. One employee came and gave us advice on New Orleans and how to stay safe. Great place. Great prices. Second time eating here. Service is awful. Only guests in the restaurant and the waitress had to be shaken off her phone to greet us. Service felt rushed. But all that can be excused at a diner if the food is decent. Any place that can massacre breakfast like this belongs on Kitchen nightmares. First time in we had a lunch special of crab crakes and mac and cheese. What we received was a dripping grease pile of microwaved mac and half-cooked half-pound balls of crab mush. I figured we had made the mistake of ordering lunch at a breakfast joint. So we came back for breakfast and it was somehow worse. Just mushy piles of slop. The hash browns were oily wet, the grits were flavorless, the eggs rubbery, but the gravy water was actually terrifying. The Chicken fried steak was frozen and contained no meat to speak of and was somehow the best part of the meal. The cherry on top was arguing over the bill on the way out because their tap water was weird. Do yourself a favor and go to waffle house, at least they have standards. read more

Well I'm sure it's all been said, this is just a great old time place, I'm pretty sure the floor, seats, ceiling, bar and all the rest are original - and by that I mean, very dang old. But the food is great, reasonably priced - it's more of a locals place after all. We had eggs, biscuits n gravy, chicken fried steak and left full and happy. Sweet server too, just friendly and nice. I don't see grilled fish on the menu too often in NOLA, so when I saw it on the menu I was giddy. I had perfectly cooked fresh catfish filet with potato salad. Delightful food. My husband had the shrimp omelette with creamy and amazing grits. The shrimp were sooo goood. I had the red beans and rice with half peas, half spinach. The spinach was not like the tenderly sautéed spinach in Los Angeles. It was cooked to death (in a delicious way!!!) like my Grandmother from down here used to cook it. The peas were interesting- they tasted canned but also a bit lemony and had bits of raw onion in them. It was odd at first but as my palate acclimated I decided I liked them. The red beans and rice were really yummy! The sausage was crispy and delicious. I made 3 meals out of it and my husband made 2 meals out of his. Great value for the money. Will definitely order again before we leave. Also we had the food delivered and an elderly gentleman walked several blocks over to us with it! What service!!! The name of this place was a deterrent for me, but I am super glad I got over myself. It's in a cute part of town, the service is very homey and attentive. It's been there for awhile and has some fun history. The owner works there and is a harsh sounding man, but they are all actually very nice. Food was good and quick, sweet tea was top notch. Stopped in during a recent visit even after , two ladies heard us discussing going and warned us not to , on our way there. We figured , to each it's own and decided to give it a try. It was a small quaint place, and the chef came out a couple times to greet us and introduced himself. After giving our order and waiting for our food the people sitting in the booth next to us, called the waitress over and asked to move tables, because there was a roach walking the wall, and the waitress proceeded to attempt to kill it with a rag. This review was written with the fact that I only went here once and that was during Mardi Gras. My friends and I went to grab some lunch during the Thoth parade in Mew Orleans. This place caught my eye since I was on Yelp and saw that the reviews were pretty good. I told my friends about it, and they were unopposed to giving it a shot. The service was really friendly. They treated us kindly, sat us down, and gave us the menus and drinks almost immediately. The waitress allowed us some time to look at the menu to order. She came back with a smile and answered our questions about the menu and the food there. She left us and came back with our food with a smile. We did have to wait a bit for our food orders; however, it was Mardi Gras and a lot of customers were present. This also led to the one bathroom being occupied for a long time which was unpleasant. The bathroom's location was also unpleasant as it was in the middle of the kitchen. The food was amazing. I had the red beans and rice with sausage, and I was blown away. I would eat that any day. The red beans and rice were reminiscent of regular ole red beans and rice like from fast food restaurants. It was creamy and provided a lot of flavor. However, the sausages were definitely the star of the show. It was extremely flavorful and not too overbearing either. It tasted amazing by itself, but with the red beans, it was a masterpiece. I savored every bit of that meal. We also got a salad that came with the dish. I got a thousand island salad which tasted basically like salad with the store bought hidden valley thousand island dressing. It was not bad; however, the thousand island dressing was overpowering. The Italian dressing is the way to go for the salads. My friend got it, and I almost just drank the dressing. I thought it was quick good with the mixture of the oil and ingredients in it. This diner is located on the St. Charles street car line. Meals are served fast and the menu is expansive. It has a dark feel to it so good for those hangover days. I saw some interesting items on the menu and they have club sandwiches which always draw me in. Will grab one to go next time! We had breakfast there and it was filling and delish. read more

I used to live across the street. No really, I did. Miz Elena and her husband have always been there. This xmas, we got to meet little Elena (she helped on the cash register) - so I suspect Please-U will be around for at least another generation. I order one thing: shrimp po'boy dressed. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll get a side order of onion rings or French fries. I order this at 7 AM. I order this every time I'm in town. Every time. For 20+ years, I've ordered shrimp po'boys from Please-U (there is ONE TIME someone in the back didn't want to make me a shrimp po'boy at 7 AM. I don't think they work there anymore). When I lived in Mid-City, KJeans was the only other place I would get shrimp from - they are closed now. My sister, she likes the chicken fried steak for breakfast with eggs - gravy on the side. The man, he got a cheese omelette the other day (it had cheese slices!) with hashbrowns/homefries. Big Ken ordered a half sandwich and soup (split pea) - he seemed to like the soup as well as the shrimp sandwich. Bebe got one egg over easy and grits. They have a great menu. Shrimp po'boy dressed.
