The best way I can describe this place is if you mix a KFC rooster with an El Pollo Loco hen, the chick is Pollo Campero. It has hybrid vigor too - its better than its two 'parents' combined. I haven't eaten in a Guatemalan restaurant yet, but I know I love Pollo Campero . This restaurant chain started back in the very early 70's in Guatemala. It became so popular there that its one of the few countries were KFC is not able to dominate like it has so many other countries outside the USA. They are even challenging KFC's dominance in Asia and have opened their first location in Indonesia, the fried chicken capital of the world. One of their newest locations opened Hollywood a few years ago at Sunset and St. Andrews. Its a very urban part of town, but when you step inside the fast food restaurant, you feel like you have entered a Central American fiesta. Its very brightly lit, and the orange and yellow colors make you think of a balmy tropical place. I was looking out to see if there were any hanging pinatas. There wasn't a long line when I arrived around 7 PM. I ordered the 3 piece meal ($5.49) which includes 2 sides and your choice of tortillas, biscuit or dinner roll. The dinner roll looked pathetic, and I can't imagine eating fried chicken with a tortilla, so I ordered the biscuit. They were out of biscuits and cooking more, so it took about 5 minutes before my biscuit arrived. I prefer dark meat when it comes to chicken, so they served me 2 thighs and a wing. they asked me if i wanted another thigh instead of the wing, but I settled for a wing. The 3 piece meal was supposed to consist of 2 legs and a thigh, but I guess they were out of legs that night. For my 2 sides I ordered Spanish rice and sweet plantains. The plantains cost 0.90 cents extra. The chicken was delicious. The skin was fried in a light batter and it wasn't oily or had a greasy aftertaste. The texture was definitely crispy - just the way I like my fired chicken. I liked it much better than KFC. The Spanish rice took me by surprise. I was expecting something non memorable like what El Pollo Loco serves, but this Spanish rice was really good. Almost like a cross between paella and Spanish rice. The fried plantains were also done right. Not oily and the texture was just perfect. They were sweet and delicious. The biscuits finally came and I was not disappointed. They weren't the best biscuits I have tasted, but better than the ones they serve at McDonald's or KFC. It was delicious with the honey packets. The service at this restaurant was very good, and what impressed me further was that they would later come to your table and offer you those packet moist towelettes to clean your hands with, as well as some condiment items. They will also clean up after your table. So its like a hybrid between fast food and sit down. The total cost for my meal including a medium drink was $8.64, so pretty good and filling for a meal under 10 bucks. I'm definitely a convert and look forward to the day when they open a location in West LA. Update: I ate there again last weekend. The chicken and the rice was as good before, but the plantains were overcooked and not freshly cooked. The biscuit also was also on the hard side. read more

I regret not eating the Peruvian. I don't usually eat fried food, but these chicken nuggety things were very tasty, crunchy outside, and soft inside. Maybe too much crunchy breading. My favorite food is plantains, & these were so good! I should have ordered more! Maybe the Peruvian flavor next trip. The service was good enough for a fast food place... There are reviews for the same restaurant in a similar address, so I don't know if it's the same place, but I have no complaints about our service here. I had an issue with a delivery recently. I'm not sure if it was the restaurant's or the driver's mistake, but this location was extremely fast to respond and made sure I was taken care of. Everyone that works here is really nice and helpful. I come in a lot. It's probably the best fast food you're going to get around here and they take EBT. I usually get the grilled chicken burrito and a Peruvian verde empanada and it's pretty decent. The horchata is overpriced, but it's actually really good. It actually tastes like Central American horchata rather than Mexican horchata. Again, this place is fast food; I feel like people are expecting a little too much from the other reviews. If you're comparing it to sit down restaurants or family owned restaurants, then that's not really fair. But it's definitely better than El Pollo Loco and KFC . I've been here about 5 times now this year. Non-GMO/ 100% hormone free chicken cheaper than Chipotle. Better yet, Peruvian & MAN can they make it. Never had a rude employee wait on me. The taste of the food here is great, especially the "Camero Beans" recipe beans... unfortunately the top 4th of the container is usually empty when I get home with it (the Large size)... In other words, the employees there are lazy about filling the entire container and only fill it about 3/4 full, which is an expensive loss of food, as Pollo Campero is a bit pricey in the first place. Pollo Campero is great, I'm definitely a fan. It's my last stop before work on Wednesdays when you can get the yummy 2-piece chicken meal deal for 3.29. The grilled chicken is probably my favorite, but the fried chicken is not bad. I definitely enjoy it more than KFC. The staff is friendly, you'll always hear a chorus of "welcome to pollo campero!" when you walk in. The staff is ok, they're a little... slow. Lovely ladies, but every single time I go there, they manage to get something wrong with my order, and these aren't difficult orders. I'd never been here before, so I decided I would give them a try. The prices aren't bad. I got their 2 piece white meat chicken combo with black beans and rice, tortillas and a fountain drink. I also got a side of fried plantains. First, the chicken was just OK. It wasn't real dry, but I can tell it had been sitting for a while. The flavor was better than El Pollo Loco. The black beans and rice is where the meal shined. They were fantasticly flavored, sort of like cuban frijoles negros. Me gusta! The plantains were pretty decent also for a fast food joint. The salsa bar sucked. The salsas didnt had much flavor and they were both pretty hot. The pico de gallo didn't look fresh. I really haven't decided yet if they are worth a second trip. Once I got my order I asked the cashier, if she had included the bread and both sides and she assured me she had( I ask since last time I stopped by one side was missing). I was about to visit a panda that is next door; however, I decided to stop by Campero and try out their chicken. The place was clean and the workers welcome the customers. I was undecided what to order. Jessica, who was the server was super friendly and had the patience to explain more about the options of their menu. I did ask her what she would recommend me. I was very impressed with the quality of the chicken. It was very tender and had a delicious taste. Jessica had recommended me their mashed potatoes and her recommendation was 5 stars! This is a place I've been meaning to check out since I moved to LA. I remember when the first US outpost of this Latin American chicken chain opened up on Wilshire about a decade ago and all the long lines they had. People raving about the fried chicken. C'mon. I lived down south at the time. Chicken couldn't be that good, could it? Turns out, it's not. Albeit it depends on what you buy. The lines are long gone. There weren't even any when I stepped into the Hollywood branch on Sunset one afternoon. I decided to try both the fried and grilled chicken. Good call, because the fried was very poor.. The breading was lame and flavorless with some of the breading coming off the breast. Reminded me of having Weaver's frozen fried chicken as a kid in Philly way, way back. And that's not good to say at all. Also, they mixed up my order as I ordered the 3 piece. Which should have been, breast, wing and thigh. Well, they got the white meat right but they placed a leg in for the thigh. Big difference. Talk about a bait and switch. The grilled was much, much better. Comparing these two styles were like night and day. The grilled was very juicy with tremendous amounts of flavor coming from the spices. Better than El Pollo Loco's recent efforts. I would come back for this albeit not much else. Sides-wise, the Black Beans and Rice are exactly what you would expect. The plantains were great (why doesn't EPL offer this?) and worth the extra amount for the 'premium' side. Fries? Well, just like EPL and Del Taco, the fries were pretty bad. Actually, they tasted like dehydrated strips of potato. Basically, if you're at a Mexican/Hispanic establishment, steer clear of their idea of french fries. Maybe the Yuca Fries are better. Didn't order those. Salsa bar is small with just two choices. Fortunately, they're both pretty good. Especially the verde although there's definitely a little spicy kick that comes in shortly after ingesting. Too bad the tortillas are bad and the chips are an extra buck. You don't get them as an option with platters. Place itself is your typical sunny look of a fast food place. Only this one has ads. You know you're at a Hispanic place with the free check cashing for ordering a family pack of chicken. You wouldn't see that at KFC. But ads for insurance? Now that's just tacky. Overall, pretty much a hit or miss place that I doubt I;ll be hitting again any time soon. read more

They literally inject the chicken with mucho sabor, then fry it to crispy-skinned perfection. As a result, the chicken doesn't have those creepy fatty blobs under the skin like KFC sometimes does. I've been driving by this restaurant for years and have always wondered what makes this one different. My boyfriend and I happened to be next door at Game Stop, so why not? So we had our Lyft driver drop us off at this Sunset Boulevard location of this Guatemalan chain that one of my friends raved about right after our Hollywood sign hike. We were starving and needed to use their facilities as well. That day they were out of a few items but we got a bunch of chicken pieces, Yuca fries and a bunch of empanadas - three different flavors: latin buffalo, peruvian verde, and guava bbq. Their chicken is very tasty and empanadas were pretty good too. Place wasn't too crowded and employees there were very patient as we decided what to get while asking a million questions. I wanted to like it. I've always wanted to like Pollo Campero but I'm disappointed every time. The chicken is actually quite tasty but everything else sucks. The mashed potatoes I got were disgusting. The black beans with rice had no flavor. The dinner rolls tasted cold and stale. When we asked the guy to heat the dinner rolls, he said "one second" and took more than 10 minutes. He also tried to convince us that all of the dinner rolls were hard and cold. I'm sure they are, but that's not the point. I feel bad saying negative things about Pollo Campero because I understand how special it is to many Central Americans.
