Place is old school as hell, love it, doesnt look like it's changed a bit since the 60s. Waitresses are friendly and sweet. Po boys are not huge but neither is the price. Shrimp and hot roast beef were both less than $8. Bread was perfect soft and chewy just can't get that outside La. Roast beef was hot, messy and tasty. Shrimp were perfectly fried and topped with mayo shredded lettuce and tomato. I added pickles--I like that tang. Stopped here for a quick lunch on our way home to Austin. The reviews looked good but we're extremely disappointed when we left. I had to use the ladies room as soon as we walked in. The smell took the breath out of me. Mold, mildew and old urine. We should have left right then but we were already there and needed a quick bite to eat. We both ordered shrimp poorboys with a side of fries. They were awful and kind of tasted like cigarette smoke. Would not recommend going here. read more

Back 30 years ago, I ate at this little place for lunch. It was packed and the food was great! I remember thinking the roast beef poor boy was as good as anything I had eaten growing up in New Orleans. And I remember thinking I wanted to go back. It took me 30 years. Man, I wish I had gone back sooner! The place was as good if not better than I remembered! The same owner who sits at the register and makes you feel at home. In town for a graduation at LSU and stopped by for a bite to eat. Food was pretty good and server was polite. Entrees of fried catfish and sausage poor boy were basic, but tasty, but the included salad was basically plain iceberg lettuce with a tiny cup of dressing. We were there on a Friday night and the live music was a nice treat but the musicians mentioned needing tips so often that it became uncomfortable. read more

A great spot to grab lunch when you are in downtown Baton Rouge. The parking is tough, so be warned. Also, expect to wait in line for lunch. But, its worth it. Their red beans and rice with smoked sausage and french bread is pretty good, but my favorite is the open face roast beef with french fries. Put the bread on the plate opened up, put the roast beef on next, french fires after that, and smother the whole thing in brown gravy. DEEEE-lish!!! read more

Ok... so knowing my northern friends always talk about how "laid back" (read slow here) can be you would think I would be used to a lunch that's not just a rush and go. You would be right. You should also know I revel in that.... a three hour lunch at patois... sure..... 2 hours at herbsaint.... yes please..... 2 hours at the swizzle stick with 25 cent martinis..... of course. But this was a total other story. Billed by the valet at the hilton as a quick place, decently priced, and tasty we really just ended up hitting 1 of these. And that was cost. The food was eh.... not one of the three of us was raving about anything. The fries were obviously straight out of the freezer into the fryer. Same with the shrimp. The po boy bread was hard and a bit stale. The roast beef was so sopped in juices my friend dropped half of it on her dress when it slid out of her hand. She said it wasn't worth it. The beer was lukewarm..... That was just when we finally got our food. It took over half hour. During that half hour we saw at least 3 other tables that came in after us get their food. 2 sanwiches came out at the same time finally, but the third (a club) came out only after we pointed out to the waitress it was missing..... which is even more funny when you consider that when we went up to check if they had forgotten our order we saw it sitting on the kitchen window. When that fateful club was finally delivered to our humble table it wasn't fully the wheat bread that was ordered... 2 wheat slices and 1 white. This was pointed out to our waitress who after telling us we were wrong 3 times finally listened to what we were saying and then finally offered to take the sanwich back. Already half way through the lunch break we didn't want to risk it and it was eaten.... and apparently was sans bacon.... who makes a club without bacon?! My friend reported that the bathroom smelled like urine (female) and that the hand written signs promising the bathroom renovation was in progress looked months old. While the adorable jolly man at the check out counter did make the experience way better... and the tiny old woman at the order counter looked sweet... the having to repeat my order 3 times in the begining at the counter should have been a clue about the rest of my experience. Lesson learned. Stay away from the po boy joints in downtown red stick. read more

We weren't greeted when we walked in and it took them about 10-15 minutes to seat us, despite there being open tables. The waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there and was just working for the job. She also lost one of our tickets and was very unorganized. The food was ok, but lacked flavor. It looks like it's been here since downtown was created or like one of those places that Chef Irvine would go to.. but I like the home town low ceiling kind of place. I go to Poor Boy Lloyd's every visit to Baton Rogue and have never been disappointed. I highly recommend the roast beef Po Boy. The pecan-smoked deer Po-boy is fabulous, the seafood gumbo is legit. The service is inviting and prompt. The entertainment is dated, but apropos and delightful...older gentleman with a soothing, soulful kind of voice, playing wonderfully on an old Casio keyboard with the old synthesizer music beds, all coming out of a tiny little speaker, somehow just felt so right for a place like this. So I was in Baton Rouge on business with colleagues who were dying to have a "Po'Boy". In hindsight I shoulda known better just based on the name. We stopped in Lloyd's which seems to be somewhat of a local institution... but so is Alcatraz Island for San Franciscan's. First off the place is a dirty dump. I don't think it's been cleaned since 1950. I've honestly had muffler's replaced in cleaner establishments. The real horror hit after I ordered my food and went to the 'restroom' to wash my hands... Their 'restroom' taught me where the name 'restroom' comes from. You see, you had better stop at the door, rest you heart rate, take a DEEEEEEEP breath and hold it before, during and after whatever you decide to do inside. I unfortunately didn't do that before hand and immediately did an about face as soon as the 120 degree stench filled my nostrils. Now I'm not talking about a misfortunate recent visitor that just left the atmosphere in a bad way, and it was just bad timing... I'm talking about a highway rest stop-esque vibe telling you, whatever you think is dirty now will only be worse after washing your hands in there... I returned to my table with tears in my eyes, and waited for the food.... Eegads! Dry tasteless softshell crab on a dry toasted loaf of bread with no sauce, no style and had it not been for the pickle, no flavor whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend this place to blind man with no tastebuds. It's welfare food at best. read more

Loved this local hole in the wall restaurant! Ordered the hot roast beef poboy, my husband ordered the shrimp poboy and the the two kids had the grown grilled cheese and a kid's grilled cheese respectively. The young one wished he ordered the grown one as it had 3 pieces of bread with cheese in between and the older kid exclaimed it was so good that it made the other one jealous (hahahaaaaa)! Both me and my husband really loved our poboys and I even had to give him most of half my sandwich because it was so good. He really liked the bread, as it was light and fluffy, perfect for these poboy sandwiches, especially mine because it was dressed with gravy. The other reviewer was right that it IS an 11-napkiner :). We also split a cup of their seafood gumbo special on the side. It was good, but watch out as it had some crawfish claws inside. Finger-lickin' good though! We also split a mud pie between the four of us. All we can say is BURP. Everything was delicious with good southern hospitality to boot. Thanks for a good meal! read more

Had a tasteless Po Boy :( I guess I'm not sure what to expect. This was my first one. Absolutely nothing to brag about...

2 stars based on wait time. Over an hour for 2 po-boys and a kids grilled cheese. That is unacceptable service. The woman taking orders completely ignored me when I went to check the status of the order. But there was a nice man, Joe, who helped get our food. After all that, the food was just ok. I've had better and I've had worse. But Definetely not worth an hour wait. I'll pass in the future. read more

One of my favorite local places to go in Baton Rouge. I have tried several different dishes ranging from the poboys which you really can't go wrong on depending on what flavor you choose to the chicken and dumplings special which is very heavy but good. You can't go here and not order a side order of the venison sausage or rabbit sausage, or even alligator if that is your fancy. To finish the mail they have wonderful apple and peach crisps which are to die for, or your chocolate icebox pie. If you're smart you'll eat well here and have us a small dinner later...because this place is worth splurging on for lunch. read more

Stopped in and ordered a bowl of gumbo and a po-boy. Soup and a sandwich. An HOUR later I'm still waiting. I asked the waitress several times what's the hold up. She was rude and when I gave up and asked for the check for my drinks, she became belligerent and rude. The owner came out and was the same way, paid for my drinks and left. Worst POS restaurant in Baton Rouge. Horrible service and a dirty grimy place. read more

I had the soft shell crab Po Boy and I was pleased as punch! It's was simple yet yummy. The bread is awesome, crispy on the outside and soft inside.
