So I've been driving by for almost a month wondering what all the hub-bub was about. This place is so packed all the time. FINALLY, I found a day to snag a parking spot and an outdoor seat - Steak Night [we were there early though]. The waitresses were awesome. The bar staff was great! SO nice. Such a great time I went back 3 days later for crawfish ... mmmmmm crawfish. Again, arrived early on a Saturday afternoon [1ish], snagged a table outdoors and enjoyed the beeeeeautiful weather, big mudbugs and cold Shiner. Perfect Saturday. You just gotta get their early. It gets 4 stars because while it's so super friendly, don't'expect to get out in under an hour or see your waitress too often. If it is a pretty afternoon, I love to grab my dog and sit on the patio with a few friends and a couple pitchers. The inside is just the kind of atmosphere I really like. I was going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. If I have to think about it, then it is usually the lower score. A large patio out front with the signature porch swing. Inside is dark and all wood bar and tables. A laid back vibe that is enjoyable. Lots of beers on tap. Some locals like Karback and Saint Arnold. All fine and good. The service is slow and a bit lax. I don't mind it that much, but I have never seen much effort on the bartenders part for anything. They always make it seem like a chore to get something. Anyway, I don't like the food at all. The burger was pretty bad IMO, salsa is weak, the rest is generic pub grub. They do crawfish, and I had to throw more out than I eat. Way to many strait tails. Ahh Porch Swing, you always hit the spot, so long as the spot is a desire to drink from a fine selection of beers that is. Since the weather has taken a turn for the better, seriously mother nature, Houston doesn't need anymore snow and ice, I moved here to get away from that. On the flipside though, we're having a cool spring and that means, wait for it...you can actually enjoy drinking on a patio! On this night, that is exactly what we set out to Porch Swing to do. They have a huge patio and if you play your cards right you can snag the coveted porch swing too. If you'd rather be inside and avoid the cherry on top of the sundae of awesomeness that is Porch Swing's patio than I've got nothing for you. Ok, well actually I do. The inside is typical sports bar, they've got a pool table, darts, Golden Tee, a few tvs etc. So just get your beer and go back outdoors. Beer selection is great, I mean we're not talking Flying Saucer or anything, but they have plenty of lights, darks, domestics, foreigns, IPAs, etc. They've got Chimay too, which I'm always happy about. But on this particular night we were drinking Shock Top, much better outdoor beer. We were here on a Tuesday and they had $3 domestic 22oz drafts. And only $4 for St Arnolds, check and double check. We went for the first time on 25 cent wing night to watch monday night football (not the Texans so it wasn't packed). Still -- wrong choice. We waited over an hour for wings, and ended up putting an order in with the bar (after which we waited an hour for wings). Don't go here hungry. We sat outside on the picnic tables and had seen a lot of people coming out carrying wings. Turns out half of those were waitstaff, just not dressed in uniform. Anyway, when we ordered wings at the bar our outside waitress (who hadn't come by since our drink order -- and turned out to be the manager!!) was super angry. She said she was coming to take our order. So we didn't get good service the rest of the night. I went in to talk to the bartender and ask if we could speak to the manager and get another waiter, that's when I found out the one we had was the manager. The bartender was really nice and understanding, he offered to wait our table instead, but we decided to leave soon after. The beer was cold and good, that was nice, and good price (a draft pitcher of zigenbock for 10$ I think). And the TVs were bright and clear. There was trivia going on that blocked the sound of the game periodically but that was nice ambiance and people were pretty into the trivia. The wings were bad, in general, small and dryish, not too tasty sauce but it was hot -- that's a plus. My wife and I were out and about on Saturday with our dogs. We had heard that there were some dog friendly restaurants/bars in the Heights. We stumbled across Porch Swing Pub using our trustworthy Yelp app :) This was my first time really hanging out in the Heights during the day and we were quite pleased with the atmosphere during lunch. The bacon cheeseburger was AWESOME!! Our waitress could use a hearing aid or it may have just been "Opposite Day" and no one told me. Everything I asked, she did the complete opposite. Gotta love college football on sunny Saturday afternoons! There is no way we were staying indoors on this day & my friend suggested this pub for our football watching needs. It was right up the road, so why not? Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded at all when we arrived. There was plenty of room on the spacious patio as well indoors near the bar. It was a bit warm outside, so we grabbed a spot inside instead. I like the chunky wood benches & tables - definitely helped it feel more like a pub. The TV clarity & set up was great. There were multiple games being shown, so you could bounce back & forth during commercials or half time shows. We ordered a round of beers & looked over the menu. Sure, we were hungry, but not starved. We decided to order a few appetizers for the table to get things started. But our waitress was no where to be found. Hmmm, the beer should have been fairly easy to round up... Once she returned, we ordered quickly, just in case. I stuck with the spinach & artichoke dip, which was decent, with quite a bit of spice to it. The chips were ok, but once you slathered on the dip, who cares? I tried to order a pumpkin beer, but was informed it was officially out of season *tear* The pumpkin beer coasters were a mere tease! At the suggestion of our waitress, I tried the Christmas Ale instead. Won't make that mistake again - way too bitter for my liking. Fortunately, someone at my table liked it & took it off my hands. This place had good drink specials, so our bill wasn't outrageous despite sitting thru a few football games. Service was adequate, though given that it wasn't crowded, I think they could have moved a tad faster. Getting our check took a while, but thankfully, we weren't in a hurry. My friend and I decided to go on an adventure and ended up in Houston for the weekend. We really had no agenda so we relied on Google maps and Yelp for things to do do. =) I read a couple reviews on this place and they were mixed reviews. It was getting late and we just wanted to grab a few beers and a snack. We were exhausted from the drive and we both worked that morning. From what I was reading it sounded like a laid back enough place to hang out. When we drove up the parking lot was full so it was a good sign. We walked in and found 2 seats at the bar. Service was quick and prompt. We ordered an appetizer sampler which was your mix of morsels of little fried goodness. There was jalapeno poppers, cheese sticks, chicken tenders, fried pickles and mini corn dogs served with marinara sauce and ranch dressing. My favorites were the fried pickles and mini corn dogs. Everything was tasty. There's a full bar and a decent beer selection. We were surprised to see Imperial beer from Costa Rica in the beer cooler. We first originally had it at ACL so we were excited to order it and reminisce about our ACL experience. Overall everything was great. It's a cool place to go if you want to go and hang out with a friend or groups of friends. Definitely would be an awesome place to go and watch sports. They have a great outdoor area with lots of TVs which would be an ideal place when the weather is nice. If I'm in Houston again and in that area I would keep this place in mind. read more

I am really starting to enjoy Houston's Steak Night promotion. I came here last week and it happened to be steak night. My girlfriend and I split a ribeye (10oz I believe) which came with a baked potato (or salad for healthy kids). The steak was very well cooked (I always get medium rare), but in comparison to other steak night venture I had (Under the Volcano - review for it later), it didn't match up too well. The steak was juicy, but it was thinner than Volcano's for relatively the same price. Still good overall. The best part of the meal was the baked potato, where they give you ALL the fixings on the table, so you can fully load your spud and reload again and again. I think I ate half the butter that night... The beer selection is decent, but I've seen other pubs with more and better selections. I've also had their philly cheeseteaks before, which I liked a lot, but I still think Texadelphia is better. It's at a great location on the Heights area to hang out and watch the game. Good variety of food, so you can always munch on something. Great prices, plenty of games to play (darts, pool, arcade, etc.) and plenty of TVs. read more

So ..the appetizer! Fried pickles. They. Are. Legit. For dinner, my boyfriend had the Waffle House. And I had the burger version of the same thing. (I can't remember what it's called.) To me, the Waffle House was dry. Well, the chicken breast was dry. (I just think I'm not a fan of chicken breast.) My burger tho!! So freaking good! Moist meat ..plus bacon and syrup ..on waffles! 2017 - Tried to give this place another chance and they failed miserably. We came with our intelligent group of history teachers and ended up winning at trivia. The waitress told us there was some regulars that win every week and they yelled at us for winning as we were leaving. Needless to say it did not end well. One of their minions jumped my husband from behind. They were all thrown out and we left never to return to such a SHIT HOLE. This place is not safe. No reason to come here unless you want to get sick off the food or get in a fight with the regulars for being smarter than them. 2016 - One word. Terrible. Don't watch football here. No respect for Texans fans. They should put a sign in the door to turn away true Houstonians. Honestly, I love porch swing. It's the best place in the neighborhood to drink beer and eat good bar food and not put a huge hole in your wallet like every other place in this area would do. I have lived off Washington for 4 years now and this place has always been a favorite. The people who give it such negative reviews have their expectations set way too high and should go elsewhere. It is just a solid, easy-going, chill neighborhood bar that has a great patio and plenty of TVs. As far as food goes we love the sampler appetizer as well as the fried pickles. Their buffalo chicken tenders are always delicious as well as the sandwiches and burgers. We have pretty much tried everything on the menu including the pizza and it was awesome too and a pretty large portion. We went on a Saturday for a friends birthday which also happened to be crawfish day so it was redolent of those little red suckers. People were also doing some kind of washers tourney? Something having to do with paper numbers on your shirt so needless to say it was pretty bizzzy. We did manage to get a seat though and a cold beer. They kept em comin and we obliged them by continuing to drink heavily. A large porch with decent service and a good selection of fried snacks. This is my favorite bar on Washington, and quite possibly, all of Houston. It is walking distance from my apartment, which means I can get drunk and don't have to worry about driving. A big plus for me. It has a crowd but its never hard to get a place to sit or get a drink. Friendly, attentive staff and reasonable prices for the Washington Strip. I love sitting outside on a nice spring or autumn evening. Its not loud, you can talk to people, and the weather is great. I have only eaten here a couple of times and its pub gub - not spectacular but I wasn't expecting spectacular so it did its job well. Since I walk here I can't comment on parking. So I've tried this place out twice, neither time have I been impressed. Most recently, I went with my boyfriend for an easy happy hour to celebrate and enjoy the patio weather. We ordered our first round at the bar and decided to catch a baseball game on one of the televisions outside. A waitress asked us later about more drinks and we asked for a food menu to get some snackage. The inner flyer indicated that Tuesdays were $2 Biggie Texas Beer nights. Score! My boyfriend and I both ordered Shiner and some spinach artichoke dip. The waitress brought out our drinks in pint glasses at a chare of $3.25 each. Ummm... Unless I'm mistaken, Shiner is a Texas beer. We asked and she said that $2 Texas Beer only applies to Ziegenbock. Talk about a slap in the face to the remaining Texas beers. I get that may be their policy so I had no problem paying the extra $1.25 - I just felt duped. They should just state $2 Ziegenbocks instead of TEXAS beers. We ate our food and drank our beers. The artichoke dip was good. I wouldn't write it off, but I wouldn't write home about it either. There wasn't much of an improvement from the first time I came to the establishment. And while the bar is dog friendly (bonus points for that), people seem to have no problem letting their dogs extend their leashes and harassing other tables (not cool people - control your pets! Yes you love them, but that doesn't mean I have to love their slobber and drool while you're too busy trying to enjoy your beer, forgetting there's a living animal attached to your wrist). read more

This is a really chilled out spot. This is one of those flip flop, shorts, tank top kinda joints. They've got all kinds of things on tap...like a full wall of options which is pretty cool. I asked the server to tell me about the 4 local Ales that they have so I know what's the difference, his response was, "I don't know, I don't drink beer." I really like the outdoor patio with the wooden benches. I like that it's so casual for Wash Ave. It's great to just sit outside on a weekdaynight. Also cool tunes. I remember hearing a lot of Death Cab the last time I was there. The frozen BlueMoon's are good, just kinda pricey. Service is friendly, just not the most attentive.
