We sat on patio and enjoyed the view of the Fox River while enjoying lunch at this fantastic eatery! The only issue was the bees were out I. Full force and made it tough to enjoy the outing. We totally understand the current situation with restaurants and staffing HOWEVER... there is no excuse to be treated and spoken to as we were Saturday, September 18th Party of 5 sat at the outdoor bar while we waited for a table - there were two girls working the bar and maybe 6 other customers sitting around the bar. We were never acknowledged... not a smile, not a hello we will be right with you - nothing. So we sat - about 10 min went by and a couple sits down and the blonde bartender goes straight over and takes their drink order. A customer sitting next to me said, "What are you, chopped liver?" Exactly. We then spoke up and said could we please get some service? At this time Alex was in front of us and said nothing. We said, Hello, Alex, could we get some service? She then snaps at us, "I'll be with you in a minute" We could not believe the snarkiness and the attitude. We immediately got up and we left. It's a shame because our friends live right up the street and they will never be back and neither will we. Some advice - a smile and a "we will be right with you" goes a long way - we get it and we tip generously because we appreciate those who are working. Your loss, Alex. Barely edible dinners, the apps are decent. We had a really crappy waitress at first. I had to complain to the manager and we got a new waiter. If this place didn't let you dock your boat it wouldn't be worth the trip. Don't even get me started on the bartenders, by far the worst. Was ignored for ten minutes straight even after leaving a hefty tip. They were not short staffed, Just have a shi**y group of bartenders. This place has really gone down hill The place used to look really nice. Now, it looks like a complete dump. Waited 20 mins to get seated, yet there were so many open tables. We ordered pork, fish & chips and a burger. This took over an hour & a half to get! The fish only comes with 2 small pieces and 10 tiny french fries NOT worth the money!!!! The burger came out wrong! Ok, I know during these trouble times we all are facing things are tough and unpleasant. BUT, we want to make the best of things. By doing that we go out and support local businesses. So, stopped at Port Edward the other day. Have been there many times, however this time was very disappointed in both service and the quality of the food. Indoor seating is still not available, no big deal, was very nice to sit outside next to the Fox River. We were seated by the hostess, but our server never showed up. Plenty of other servers walked by our table and looked at us. Not even an acknowledgement. After we inquired about service, 25 minutes later, was informed that our server will be right over. Ordered a pound of peel and eat shrimp. Shrimp appeared to be funky, little rubbery and a few of them mushy. Our first time to come here all the way from Chicago. So here's my review. Location: 4 star Food: 3 star Drinks: 2 star Servers: 4 star Dessert: none they don't have. The only negative comment for now is you have a 1 1/2 hour limit to eat. They will not kick you out when you're still eating but unfortunately you cannot enjoy your food and ambiance at the same times since everyone is rushing. Due to COVID. They have limited seats. Well we went on Friday to sit by the river and enjoy a early dinner. Although tie service was great and the beer was cold the food was really bad and the price was vary outrageous for the quality. Maybe I'm wrong but a restaurant that specializes in sea food and charges $19.00 for a crab cake should serve more than a obviously frozen than deep fried in yesterdays oil needs to do a little better or charge accordingly. Went on a Saturday night, place was busy inside, patio was packed. The place is old and needs an update, but that is obvious. The server was stressed from the lack of organization in the kitchen. We ordered 2 orders of 2lbs of king crab, we should have asked for market price $115 an order. At least pre crack them for that insane price. We didn't ask the price, so that is on us. The two orders of fish and chips came out cold and fries half cooked. Servers blamed the kitchen, the manager came out and came they back correct. HEMMINGWAY'S TROUT I've been here twice, maybe three times with my wife. It's kind of the only dedicated seafood place we've found in the area, so that's a plus. And the seafood itself is generally pretty solid. I've gotten the trout and it's served well, tastes great, and really hits the spot. The problem is that the food itself is actually super expensive. My guess is that it's hard to find quality seafood in the middle of the country, so that puts a premium on things. And the seafood is high quality. But the prices are really expensive, so if you are a budget restaurant patron, like I tend to be, this is actually not a good place for you, except maybe on a birthday or mother's day or something like that. That said, if money isn't really an issue for you, and you love seafood, then Port Edward is actually probably a really good spot for you. Oh and they have an indoor koi pond... Went tonight for my grandma's birthday and I could not be more impressed. Outstanding service and exceptional food. Grandma had the cold water lobster while my mother and I had the scallops and swordfish and each was cooked to perfection. Topped it off with a "sparkling" ice cream which really made for a great end to the night. An extra special shout out to Cynthia for making this a very memorable 87th birthday for my gram. Love the ambiance. Our waitress wasn't friendly but another named Tracy came by and talked with us and was very friendly and told us about some of the history of the restaurant..very cool. If we go back, I'd ask for her. The food was all good, except the coleslaw, which has too much mayo. The only real negative is the prices. $20 for fried cod and fries, especially when you only get two pieces is rather steep, $8 for a bowl of lobster bisque that had no lobster meat is also not what I'd expect. We have been coming here for years. Trying our best to support local business, we ordered oysters as part of a special dinner we were celebrating. We brought them home and plated. Ate a few... and then started finding mud blister worms crawling around our plates. We pulled the plates before anyone ate anymore. While they are harmless parasites, the reason we bought them was to be easily plated and eaten right away. I felt like someone should have been checking these as they were opened. When I called to speak to someone about it, she said they didn't wash them and brushed off the phone call all together. Longtime customers lost in that instant. read more

I'm thinking the best way to give my review here is to just walk you through with bullet points. - Walked in on a beautiful warm summer evening. I felt like I was walking back in time (to quote Brandon L. who nailed it: "a poor man's version of an '80's Red Lobster"). The indoor koi pond was interesting. We walked up to the head waitress and asked for a table for two outdoors. She gruffly told us that if we wanted to eat outside we should walk back out and it was "seat yourself." Hmmm okay... - Washed my hands in the bathroom. The first sink I tried was broken. - A waitress with the manners, personality and charm of someone you would expect to work at a bad, greasy diner stomped up and demanded our drink orders before showing us a drink menu. - We sat and enjoyed the view of the water. And the broken plastic white picket fence covered in spider webs... Hmmm... you'd think they would clean and fix that. Well, maybe it's because this is more of a casual seafood place. That could be cool. -There was a boom box (yep, a boom box!) blasting music from a classic rock radio station in the background. Am I about to eat seafood or am I in the free-weight room at a gym? - Our waitress returned with our drinks in plastic cups. Slightly tacky but not bad, after all we're sitting outside. It's casual seafood by the river on a beautiful evening. - She gave us menus. But these prices aren't casual at all! This place thinks they're really schmancy! Must be paying for the decor and highly trained wait staff. Okay, um, I'll order the walleye ($25.00 and then $2.00 extra if you want it crusted in pretzels? Really? Couldn't just throw in the pretzels?). It will be super good though, right? I'll skip the pretzel up-charge. My wife orders salad with strawberries and pine nut crusted shrimp. - When our dinner comes my walleye looks like the fish I got when my parents took me to a Sizzler circa 1976. Broiled, slightly steamed but drenched in butter. It was a little better than the Sizzler fish though. - Let's talk more about the fish. It would have been passable if it was $10 bucks cheaper or served in a decade when the average person hadn't experienced good seafood served creatively. This was a totally uninspired presentation and preparation, flopped and scooped onto the plate. It was served with plain steamed green beans and boiled potatoes, cut in half and then rolled onto a big plate, most likely with an oversized cafeteria ladle. Did the chef get all of his cooking experience at a prison or a homeless shelter? Come on. - My dinner came with a little a plastic cup of some sort of tartar sauce. Note to Port Edward: if you want to be shmancy and thus justify your bloated prices, the words "plastic cup" and "tartar sauce" should not be a part of the dining experience. - My wife's salad is good but the shrimp looked like the Gorton's fisherman shook them out of a yellow box and baked them according to the directions. - The restaurant closes at 10. At 9:30 another waiter shot around snapping down umbrellas at empty tables. I guess he wanted to get out of there. - Noted the menu shows items that people ordered when they were filming the WTTW Check Please show. They reviewed boiled crab legs? How the can you mess up boiled crab legs - that's not a test of a restaurant. (I've mentioned this before in a previous very positive review for another seafood restaurant called Two Tails in Woodstock, IL.) And why are they $60.00 bucks at Port Edward? You can get all-you-can-eat crab legs anywhere these days. - Walked back out through the swarming mayflies and tried to get into the car quickly without letting too many inside. - Yet another example of a restaurant where the owners view it as a cash cow and don't want to invest a freaking dime in fixing anything. read more

I really wanted to like this place but it was a serious disappointment. I really don't like giving negative reviews but the only way I would come back is for the bloody Mary's. Ordered a filet mignon and had to send it back. First of all it came on a super small plate that looked like a side plate. Over cooked, they didn't have the veggies I ordered and I payed extra for a sweet potato and when they brought it out again they did not give one to me. Decided to get mushrooms and had to send it back because it was so salty it was really unbearable. I felt bad I kept sending things back so I had everyone at the table try it and they all agreed. Terrible service, gave drink order twice and still nothing. Bartender unable to multi task and had the looks of nervous breakdown. Many of the reviews I read on Yelp before starting my review were about the service. My wife and I went to Port Edward this week and the service was good. The food itself leaves something to be desired. The bread was the best part of the meal - tasty, warm, a bit chewy, but definitely worth eating. It went downhill from there. The escargot was bland, with very little butter or garlic. The ones you can buy frozen from the local grocery store are much better in all respects. The crab cakes appear to be made with bread run through a food processor, and are bland and greasy, with very little crab in them. The seafood stuffed mushroom caps appear to be made with Stove Top stuffing (you can see pieces of bread croutons in the stuffing), with some small strands of shrimp or fish mixed in. They were bland at best. The New England Clam Chowder was good, and acceptable, but just acceptable. Everything in general lacked flavor and was under seasoned. For the money, I'd rather eat at Red Lobster. read more

The crab dip alone is worth 5 stars. It had my whole family satisfied! (I'm talking about the free crab dip they give you when you first sit down). Yes you read that right... FREE! It has me drooling just thinking about that crab dip. That dip alone is worth going for, LOL! They also brought me out a gluten free bun and my own crab dip serving so it wouldn't get cross contamination. Oh, and they gave us multiple refills of the crab dip. We were so happy about that! My family went to Port Ed's to sit in the new patio area and have appetizers and drinks. The new patio area along the river with the lights is gorgeous and we loved just sitting out there, chatting, and being by the water. The crab dip alone filled us up, but we ordered more food (of course) to try and we enjoyed everything. The drinks were good, too. I totally recommend trying out Port Ed's! Okay, went in tonight for a Birthday Dinner for my daughter. Not to mention it was our first visit as well. We were seated early ( had reservation for 6pm seated at 5:36. That was 1 star). No one greeted us at our table for over 15 minutes, no water , no bread , nothing. A kinda rude waitress came over and never really greeted us! Just said what would you like to drink... I said well may we have a drink menu / wine list, she rushed around dropped one back and left. Finally 30 mins in we received water & bread! It had some sort of spread along with butter not sure what it was. We ordered New England Clam Chowder, well let me tell you it was canned potatoes & milk soup.. I had no clams in it & it had no taste whats so ever! I ate the crackers it came with. Finally received the mixed drinks we ordered , my daughter had a Pina colada ( laughing ) it tasted like frozen Water slush. I ordered sex with the captain, ( eye roll ) apparently they forgot to add the captain because it tasted like orange & pineapple juice only! Made our entree orders by this time we were totally disappointed my daughter just ordered a salad , I had the Lobster roll! People come on if you advertise a lobster roll on the menu please put lobster in it! It was a sad sad attempt at a lobster roll, it was actually seafood salad you buy at a deli with a lil celery added! My husband went with the fried shrimp platter. He ate it but agreed he will not be going back. We did tell our waitress how disappointed we were with the whole experience and food quality, she really didn't seem to care! What was once the restaurant of all restaurants in the area has become a parody of itself. The entrees are outdated but still tasty. Service is extraordinarily friendly but not very quick. We sat on the outside patio this visit. Great view. Subpar service this visit. We tried a number of items- Crab cakes, ceviche, tuna, Caesar salad, Soup trio. The food is run from deep inside the building. If you want a great setting either inside or out it is this place. It would be great for a photo session or a movie background. Unfortunately as a restaurant it is just ok. We've been there for the sunday brunch too and it's better than ok. Here's the issue- they are trying to be everything to everyone. Huge extensive menu, buffets, entertainment and all on multiple levels. They try to simplify it all by using Institutional grade food products purchased from others. I love the building and setting. I think it makes me feel productive yet social ;) I like the basic breakfast stops, but sometimes your looking for something a little extra special, a BRUNCH! Coffee? Yes! Fresh squeezed OJ? Please! Omelette station? Even better!! Mimosas, crab legs, prime rib and dessert bar? Um, hell yeah! Yes it's a little pricey, about $35 per person, but this is a beautifully set up brunch and worth the price. We went for my birthday celebration. We got there right when they opened at 9:30am because we didn't have a reservation. Our party of 5 was sat immediately in the main room. We all loved different parts of the brunch... Waffles with fresh fruit whipped cream and pudding was my favorite. I had some fun at the omelette station and seafood bar. I shot crab leg water in my mans face when I snapped a leg open! Whoopsie! They continuously filled our champagne glasses, which I generously deposited into my fresh OJ, for mimosas! After several return trips for more chocolate covered strawberries, we explored the restaurant, which has a pond with sailboat (inside), wine cellar, gift shop and huge outdoor patio that overlooks the Fox River. (I'll be hittin that patio for dinner & drinks soon!) After dinner we took a walk in the park along the river, because it was gorgeous, but mainly to stretch our bloated bellies! Don't judge! I don't eat like this every Sunday, it was my B-Day! I was a guest here for a birthday celebration. I was a little wary when reading some of the reviews before going there. But we had a pleasant time. And we sat in the boat. Yes, the boat floating in the koi pond. Actually it was a little annoying because to get to it you had to pass through a servers area where you had to maneuver past the servers. I was there on a Friday night which is seafood buffet night. So here is the latest recap: Crab, crab, crab. - 5 stars. Any Louisiana related dish (jambalaya, dirty rice, etc) on the buffet - 1 star. Fish items on the hot buffet (except for the above-mentioned Louisiana stuff) - 4 stars. Sushi, acceptable when its fresh and first put out but not after - 2 stars. Mens bathroom, they have fixed the sink that Yelpers have mentioned - 3 stars. Lack of desert table at said buffet - 1 star. Experiencing the cheesy "boat" table - 5 stars. Grilled vegetable dish - 5 stars. Service - 5 stars. Prime rib at carving station - 4 stars. Decor (needs renovation) - 2 stars. Acceptable place to celebrate a group special event such as a birthday. Its hard to find seafood buffets. The price for the Friday buffet is $35. The restaurant closes at 10:00. Overall, this place is disgusting: from the bad service to the horrible seafood. Several people have got food poisoning here (myself included) from the Ahi Tuna and other dishes. (Apparently, the owner has had those reviews removed.) The only reason place eat here is because it's on the river. If it wasn't for that ambiance, no one would come here. If you want quality seafood, go anywhere but here. It's not worth the money. read more
