We were there for our anniversary dinner and had a great time. Shelby, our server was fantastic. The food was incredible. We had the tuna crisp, manchego soufflé, peach soup, and I don't remember what else but each dish was incredible. We didn't much care for the soup - tasted a little like melted ice cream - but it was still really good. Great texture for all the foods and great mix of spicy, fruit and savory. Went to Potager last night. Service was good. Food was terrible. Meal was pretty mediocre for the price and was honestly really bad in terms of quality and execution. Too much salt and overcooked meals seems to be the general complaints for many patrons here. We ordered all the small plates. 3/5 things were super salty, only one that was really good was the watermelon salad. Eggplant was overcooked, everything else had coarse grains of salt that made it overly salty. We ordered 4 main dishes and half of them were overcooked and overly salted. It was as if two different people cooked the meals. Chicken was ok, the one that was not overcooked and dry. But for $31 per half chicken, it left more to be desired. Meatballs (the ones which were not over salted) were Meh at best. Overall, for this price level you expect a lot more in terms of quality, which is sorely lacking here. Definitely would not recommend. You guys can do better. read more

I walk past this area all the time and never stopped to notice Potager tucked into the neighborhood. Now I will never pass by and think of anything else. Potager wowed us with their service, their wine, and their delicious food. Our strategy was to order the table multiple plates and share to try it all! Definitely the way to go. What we loved: - Spring Greens Salad with Green Goddess Dressing (we ordered another after eating the first) - Flatbread with arugula pesto, tarragon ricotta, pickled beets, carrot agrodulce - Wood oven root vegetables - the most unexpectedly delicious dish. I've been to Potager multiple times and it's wonderful each time I go. With a rotating menu, this place is perfect to visit every couple months because it's always new. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous but the indoor seating is also nice. The food here is always well-presented and tastes delicious. Absolutely incredible meal from beginning to end. They have a new seasonal menu and each dish is bursting with flavor and beautiful textures. The koginut squash with brown miso butter was a standout. The Gruyère biscuit that accompanied the coq au vin was flaky and crumbly and light as air. The peanut butter semifreddo was as if a PBJ sandwich had achieved nirvana in the form of smooth creamy gelato smothered in chocolate and perfectly toasted salted peanuts. Service was impeccable. They graciously accommodated our vegan diner and brought out a gargoulliou -- a plate of assorted veg dishes that I will dream about forever (as it was being described we immediately asked they bring one out for the rest of us too). Chef Paul brought them out himself to describe each dish, including the farms that provided the veg. Beautiful space, happy diners, with food that is both sophisticated and down to earth -- especially when reminded of the earth where it came from. This is now my favorite Denver restaurant. It's been around since the early 80s but I just discovered this gem in Cap Hill. Potager's menu is unique and full of fascinating dishes you must try. My favorite of the night was the Twice Baked Cheddar Cheese Souffle. OMG, I've died and went to heaven with this dish. It was light and airy. The sharp cheddar flavor did not overpower the eggs. I almost placed a second order because it was so good. The Meyer lemon gave it enough sweetness and tang to even out the dish. We also tried the cornmeal crusted oysters with cabbage-radish slaw. Another hit with us. The perfectly fried oyster delivered a crunch of enjoyment. The slaw was a great accompanying side with the dish. The nice sourness from the slaw and malt vinegar truly made this a memorable dish. The Beef Tartare with a molasses cured egg yoke was okay. It was overly salty. I was hoping the vadouvan aioli would help cut the saltiness, but unfortunately it just didn't help. I am guessing the preparer just failed to taste the dish the night we visited. I will give it another shot when we visit again. Overall it was an enjoyable experience and service was top notch. The server perfectly paired a bottle of wine with the dishes we chose. read more

It's not us, Potager, it's you. Our last visit to Potager will be our last ever, as they have heavily rested on their laurels and past reviews. This restaurant's service has gone off a cliff. We sat at the bar for an early dinner and some wine. The bartender/server was rather unkempt and entirely unprofessional. He told us that he was busy when we tried to explain what type of wines we prefer. He then proceeded to suggest, as someone with alleged sommelier training, the worst bottle of wine I have ever ordered in my 50+ years of life. The bottle was corked-period-but two people there stated that it needed 30 minutes to an hour to open. Then one server rudely stated, "maybe you just don't like it." The cork was rotted through, and there was an excuse for everything. We southerners have an expression: Don't pee on my boots and tell me it's rain. After 45 minutes, the wine was slightly better, but we should not have paid over $100 for that bottle! The food was fine, but not up to snuff with previous meals. We received no courtesies for the inconveniences of ordering a wine we could not drink, and the manager was aware of the issue and never even stopped over. Our bill was close to $350 for two people, so no, we will not dine there again. read more

Really solid farm to table restaurant that even highlights on their menu where all of their produce comes from! Their menu changes frequently, but everything is always super fresh and delicious. The only drawback is that it can be a bit loud inside and they only serve beer and wine, no cocktails, but overall the vibes are great! Their cleanliness and distancing procedures make you feel very safe while you take in the earthy aesthetic of Potager. I did the women's wine guild tastings through Potager, and as a result, I tried some of their delicious food! The tastings came with snacks, and one was their green soup, which I don't see on the menu anymore but it was SO good. I could eat that everyday. I also got their lamb meatballs dish to go. It was super good. The spinach hummus was awesome and made me fee like it was healthy. :) Definitely loved being introduced to this gem and can't wait to try more of their food. read more

Agnolotti - a small filled pasta: This was not small. It was basically like a manicotti, server lukewarm over olive oil and a bland cheese sauce, with cold beets on top. Gremolota had way too much garlic. Sadly disappointed. Nice presentation though just extremely poorly done. Also found the weird request in the bill to extra tip the kitchen staff extremely off-putting.... are they not getting paid enough or tipped out enough by the restaurant? ...I've never seen this before. read more

This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Colorado. My husband and I live down the street and its our number one choice for a nice date night. We're vegan at home and vegetarian when we go out to eat and they always have incredible vegetarian dishes. The service is amazing and the vibes are wonderful. We also love how seasonal the dishes are. Every time we dine here we delight in experiencing what time of year it is through the food. Conflicted if this should be 2 stars or 3, really should be 2.5. My girlfriend and I went to Potager last night for Valentines. I had been looking for a place for a while and decided upon Potager based off reviews I've seen online. The consistent theme seemed to be great service. Well, we had anything but unfortunately. We only saw our server one time in the first 20 minutes we were sat and that was for her to tell us she'll give us a couple more minutes. The tables next to us was visited 3 or 4 times in that 20 minutes at that. Once we finally ordered they were out of the ribeye my girlfriend wanted, so the serve put in the small plates and came back a few minutes later and we told her we would just share the crab cake. The crab cake took what felt like forever to arrive after we had finished the apps. Order desert when we got the crab cake. After dessert we were waiting around for another 10 minutes or so for our server to come by but she was talking to the wine lady. So we ended up having to ask another server for our check. Honestly we should have just left after not being attended to for 20 minutes. Food was decent, the Comte soufflé was good but hard to eat and the duck croquettes were gross in my opinion. Filling was too wet, was more mushy than creamy. The crab cake was good. But it's hard to get over being seemingly ignored. I don't even usually write reviews. This is literally the first one I've written because of how awful the service experience was. read more

My mom had been talking about this place all year. She read about it in 5280 and thought it was a new restaurant, so she put it on her must-go list. I recognize all that left me with high expectations when we finally went, but I still think it was only so-so. Turns out it isn't new at all and, in fact, is an original restaurant to the area from back in the day. The tastefully tattered space in an old building is really cool. I love how open it is, with a specific bar/cafe area and dining area. The exposed brick and piping, and the various decor is neat. Our server was super nice and was extremely patient with us as we took our time socializing and deciding what we wanted (it was a slow weekday evening). She described all the dishes, gave her recommendations and let us taste a couple wines. Because the ingredients are all sourced locally, they depend heavily on what's available and, thus, the season. As such, the menu changes regularly, which is neat. We got to small plates to share for starters. One was a beat salad that was only so-so. To be honest, I can't remember the second one, but it was actually our favorite item out of all the food ordered. For the main course, I ended up going with a chicken dish, which did not look very good when it came out. It looked like a mangled piece of chicken on my plate, so they might want to work on the presentation. Additionally, it was super salty. I didn't end up eating much and gave the leftovers to my mom. My mom got the ribs. They pulled easily off the bone the way the server described, but otherwise the meat was incredibly sinewy and gristly. Considering the cut of meat, she expected some fat, but it was very loaded. It also lacked much flavor. After all that, the bill was extremely expensive. Yes, we ordered a lot of food and a bottle of wine, but it's just a pricey place in general. Unfortunately for such high prices, I would have expected the food to be better. Again, the space and service were stellar, so we agreed that the only reason we'd go back is if it was in a different season where the menu items were completely different. read more

Lots of new restaurants have been opening in Denver these days, but few deserve or will keep their initial 5-star ratings. So it's interesting to see a long-time survivor in the Denver food biz--and one of the truly first "farm-to-table" spots in the region--kick up their game from what has been a 4-star rating to what I think now should be viewed as a 4.5-5 star restaurant: Potager. Potager is perfectly named. The word means "vegetable garden" in French and fresh veggies and herbs are what the place is all about. Now maybe it's because my honey took me out on a date; and maybe it's because the first part of the date was her taking me to her nail place and us getting joint manicures/pedicures (wow, was the weird and fun). Or maybe it was because it wasn't me shelling out the Franklin and a half I'm sure the bill came to, but . . . god was it great, and did we have wonderful service laid out in a romantic but cozy neighborhood storefront setting. Started with a glass of prosecco and some of the best sourdough bread and butter I can remember. Then we shared the warm carrot and squash salad with saffron-vanilla vinaigrette dressing followed by the twice baked manchego soufflé. (Whatever you order when you go there always order their seasonal soufflé. You'll love it and it's really unusual). Tastes so clean and like right-out-of-the-ground fresh. The entrée was a wood-oven roasted chicken with wild mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and rosemary jus and it was excellent. But we'd saved enough room by splitting dishes to have their chocolate tart for dessert and that my friend was a very wise decision. Throw in a couple/three glasses of pinot noir and an Italian red I don't remember the name of and we had one of the more memorable meals we've had in town this whole year. The two entrees (duck and a meatball special) were just "meh," which isn't acceptable to me at $24 a plate. The dessert, billed as "big sexy beignets," were actually 4 donut holes :(. When a spectacular farm-to-table meal starts with a BEET appetizer that I can't get enough of - and gets me using my finger to scoop the last of it out of the bowl - I couldn't wait for what came next. But first, the beets. Accompanied by a crisp and thin house-baked gourmet sesame cracker, the beet appetizer was made with cream and thyme and served cold like a firm mousse. We added a chicken liver pate that was delicate and flavorful and could have been the star of our meal pregame if not for....the....beets! We went seafood for the mains. a seafood bouillabaisse for my girlfriend and mussels with pomme frites for me. Hers: halibut, lobster, mussels, and scallop in a rich and smoky tomato cream sauce with onions, garlic, thyme and probably saffron and fennel. Each seafood item was cooked perfectly and the halibut and mussels were tops. Mine: So glad I ordered mussels as well - they arrived topped with crispy seasoned pomme frites in a white wine cream sauce that I wanted to eat like a soup after devouring the mussels and fries. The mussels? Plump and tender, each bite bursting with rich flavor and better than the last. No cocktails here but they offer a strong wine selection including champagne/bubbles and a few good beers. Service is a team approach and the eclectics staff was on point and seemed to actually enjoy their work in this busy spot. Reservations are a good idea but the bar is cool if you want to wait for a spot to open up, first come first served. read more

I love Portager. The food is delicious, their business practices are amazing and the ambiance of the restaurant and service are phenomenal. My absolute favorite dish is the cheese soufflé. It is so light and cheesy and melts in your mouth. This is a must try dish. This item is always on their menu. Most of their other menu items change frequently with the season as they use all local and seasonal ingredients. The seasonal dishes I had were also all amazing. They had an amazing arugula salad and I also had the ravioli, which was so tasty and flavorful. They also give you warm bread with your meal and it was delicious dipped in the sauce from the ravioli. My husband had the steak and had praises for it. I also cannot say enough about the staff and environment of the restaurant. The moment you walk in you are welcomed promptly and the servers take care of you and are super knowledgeable of the menu items and the business practices of the restaurant. One thing to note is that they don't take reservations. We showed up right when the place opened on a Wednesday night to ensure we wouldn't have to wait and we were seated right away. But the time we left, around 7 pm, the place was starting to fill up! I would love to go back and try new items on the mid-late spring menu!! read more

One of the most creative menu items I have seen, with unusual combinations that complement each other exceptionally. A casual atmosphere with a bistro feel to it. Drilled concrete walls makes the acoustics lively. The phrase that comes to mind is country French bomb shelter, but not off-putting. Service is at time inattentive, but perfunctory when you have it. Striking a balance between efficiency and cordiality is an art form requiring a life of work.
